RARBG shutting down left a huge hole for me and I can’t figure out what’s a good alternative for it other than 1337. Any suggestions?

Arr guys,

Recently, I came across an app called GameVault on r/selfhosted and wanted to share it here. It's like a customized Steam-like platform for games stored on your seedbox or fileserver you can run yourself on your server.

You and your family can then use the Windows app to download them, track your playtime and so on. The idea is pretty neat and like Jellyfin/Kodi but for videogames.

The developers cannot officially promote piracy, so they have a scary disclaimer on their page, but the app works perfectly fine and everything is formulated "tounge in cheek"-ish.

Personally, I have about 25 "alternatively obtained" games on my seedbox-server by now, and it's working fine for me and my kids.

If you have basic Linux-server knowledge, setting it up is not difficult. For complete beginners, there's a guide on their website: https://gamevau.lt/docs/intro

Side note: I'm definitely not the dev, and my username is just an anagram for that by coincidence.

I want to download entire collections of authors for my mother, so she always has something to read.

For example, she likes nora Roberts. That's over 200 books. Can I automate this?

I would really appreciate it if someone would double check me. Sorry for the screenshot. Either the Lemmy code button isn't great or I'm just dum at formatting.

This has local *arr servers available and traceroute shows me going through the VPN.

The largest blue blotch is the ip address of a mullvad vpn server.

Rpi4, Raspberry Pi OS lite.

Mullvad VPN. IPv6 has been nuked. Using Wireguard through wg-quick.

wg2 originates from a .conf file from Mullvad with IPv6 stripped.

Do these UFW settings look right?

(As part of the Reddit migration, any time I'm only able to find info on Reddit, I'm reposting it to kbin/Lemmy.)

TL;DR - To get the page's OCR text from Newspapers.com, replace /image/ with /newspage/ in the url with the thumbnail.

EDIT: @godless Pointed out that some libraries have access to Newspapers.com through a Library Edition portal. My local library has several newspaper archives, and I figured the first couple would be the most complete. Nope, but there was Newspapers.com Library Edition access buried under the fold. That worked!

Bonus tip - Also search for current info of close family members. The spokeo hit was due to searching his mother's name, and spokeo is too dumb to understand that deceased people don't move with their families to future homes. It treated his records like he was living ("Current" address, phone numbers, etc were listed, even though they were for his sister, who's still alive).

And here's my rant/vent/story...

I was looking for an obituary in that nebulous early 90's time period where only some info is digitized. Hi s family's having a memorial for him next week and I was hoping to bring a pic of the newspaper from his birthday and deathday, along with the obit. I had a general idea of the date of death, knew the city and funeral home, and his name minus middle initial. Sites like legacy.com refused to return a match. Even the state and county records sites were useless.

After a couple hours, I had only 2 partial hits. Bing Chat (yeah, I was surprised, too) said it found the obit, but it was locked behind a paywall. The newspaper that had it (which I checked earlier) said nothing was there. It appears that the obits are available going back to 2004. Dates before that were supposedly available in the paper's archive. The archive was 404. Or, rather, the entire domain was 404.

The second hit was on spokeo - one of those obnoxious sites that gives partial info and then wants you to subscribe to 3 different levels of services. But, from there I got his middle initial and the exact birthday and death date. That info helped.

I eventually made it to Newspapers.com, which threw up a paywall, but indicated it had the info. I did the usual checking the source and css, reader mode, incognito, etc. It was clear that the image was probably there, judging by the css. Nope. The only info I could find on getting through that barrier was on Reddit. It doesn't lead to the paper image, but the OCR text. Just replace /image/ with /newspage/ in the url with the thumbnail.

Good. It existed and was exactly where I was expecting through the whole search. Now to get the paper image that the text was extracted from... nope. Gotta sign up.

One last thing to try again, since Newspapers.com gave me the exact PAGE NUMBER.

I tried looking into the archives of the paper available in the library's database. It appears most obits (non-newsworthy ones) were excluded. My hypothesis is that the paper sold the archives to a site that stipulated that they must be excluded from other sources. It's the only explanation.

So, looks like I'll be visiting the library Monday to see if they have microfiche of the paper. WTF is going on that I can't find a major metropolitan newspaper's obit section in 2023? I can find 15 million pictures of influencers' breakfasts, but a 2x2 inch shred of paper is completely inaccessible. Not even a torrent out there of this stuff because who the fuck would make it hard to find an old newspaper?

(Forgot to mention that I used Google, Bing, DDG, and SearXNG. Bing was the most helpful, Google the least helpful.)

This shit right here is why I pirate - "great" business models. If there was a torrent of the entire decade's worth of that newspaper, it would have been easier to download that, compared to jumping through all these hoops.

I heard that LearnFlakes is the best place for this stuff but damn near impossible to get into without an invite. Does anyone know of other public trackers which are good for this stuff?

Thanks

Just curious if anyone knows of any font torrents, especially where the contained fonts are listed. I am looking for ITC Founder’s Caslon in particular (https://www.myfonts.com/collections/founders-caslon-font-itc), but any of the Fell Types in general (in addition to these, which I have already snagged: https://iginomarini.com/fell/the-revival-fonts/).

looks like rendering adblockers extensions obsolete with manifest-v3 was not enough so now they try to implement DRM into the browser giving the ability to any website to refuse traffic to you if you don't run a complaint browser ( cough...firefox )

here is an article in hacker news since i'm sure they can explain this to you better than i.

and also some github docs

Hi there, sorry if this information has already been shared, I had a look in the megathread and wiki and could not find something specific to children programmes. Is there a good tracker for them? Preferably a public one. I'm particularly interested in any kind of star wars content (like Lego) but I'm not finding much. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I am looking to buy a VPN subscription, and im interested in getting one that allows port forwarding. Found a few that still allows this, including pure VPN and air VPN which seem to offer good value for money, at least on the the long term plans. Any feedback on these two?

I used to have nordvpn, and used it for 3 years, and once that subscription ran out, have been using mullvad so far. Performance wise mullvad hasnt disappointed me or anything, but now im looking to find one that allows port forwarding.

I also have a doubt regarding the whole port forwarding thing, does the VPN having this feature enable to do it even if my ISP doesnt allow port forwarding? From the videos and articles I read, VPN port forwarding is just something you do inside their native apps and such, so if the ISP hasnt enabled port forwarding for me (which I know it hasnt, because tried to get jellyfin working the other day, and couldnt get the ports to open even after setting everything up in my router), will I still be able to do it? I tried searching around with this query, but didnt really find anything.

I haven't used IPT in about 4 months and went to log back into it today only to find my account has been deactivated. I went onto the IRC and was told that inactive accounts can't be recovered, which is annoying as the account was years old with a good ratio.

However, onwards an upwards. I am wondering where the best place to get an invite for IPT is? Can anyone point me in the right direction, or throw an invite my way (I can provide ratio screenshots)

Sorry if this felt like a noobie question, as im new to the world of private trackers.

What's the best way to access private tracker invites? Is it considered really okay or safe to purchase account invites from websites like (invitez) and (torrentinvites)?

Recently I attended a lecture series. Those lectures were shared on Microsoft 365 sharepoint. There was no way to download those videos for offline viewing. Then after lot of searching got this. So I am sharing this here as my first post on this instance.

Best Debrid service? (lemmy.sdf.org)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by refurbishedrefurbisher@lemmy.sdf.org to c/piracy@lemmy.dbzer0.com

I've been using Real Debrid for about a year now, but there're a couple of things making me want to switch.

I like to share my account with a couple of friends. Real Debrid gave me a warning about banning my account if I use it concurrently with someone else.

Real Debrid no longer accepts emails from AnonAddy or Tutanota. I would much rather not have to give out any real contact info.

Looking for a comparable service that caches torrents from anyome who downloads it and provides a link premiumizing service. I would also like to be able to give out direct links for the purposes of using Syncplay.

Whatever I use must be compatible with Torrentio inside of Stremio.

Just like the title says; I'm interested in being able to sleep to YouTube without ads, but I don't fuck with their business practices and they don't deserve my money. Unfortunately, I'm also a very inexperienced pirate and I'm unsure where to look.

Edit: for clarity I'm using a OnePlus 7 Pro with earbuds

I have some stuff on Audible but don't want to pay for OpenAudible to De-DRM them. What would be the best place to get those audiobooks? Audiobookbay has nothing I'm looking for.

If you obtain a book on the High Seas, is it safe to use Kindle as the Epub reader? Would it phone home to Amazon that you have an "otherwise obtained" book?

Indonesian moving to Australia soon, I'm just concerned my laptop/phone will be checked for pirated content.

The general rule of thumb I've seen around the internet is "encrypt your drive", which is easy enough. But the other approach typically says "bring a burner phone / laptop" which of course isn't viable in my case.

Can anyone confirm on the legitimacy of these claims? I know I pirate light (""light"" compared to the vets here), but I'm just so paranoid that I could be held up and sent back home, because this might be my only shot.
