I can't explain it, something about the freedom of acquisition takes the pressure off and lets me just launch it and try it out.

Maybe it's easier to pay some money and hit "install", than it is to find a torrent, download it and go through the install process, so there's a selection bias there.

Maybe it's the fact I downloaded it exactly when I decided to and not when a sale happened or it was in a bundle.

But even then, when I decide I want something right now and I pay full-price, something about that just puts a psychological barrier in between me and enjoying the game. Like now I have to validate the purchase, and if I want a refund it has to happen within 2 weeks, and within 2 hours of play (for steam). It's just an unpleasant feeling.

Even worse is the subscription model. I absolutely hate the pressure of having to try all the games I put on my list before the end of the month so I don't have to renew to keep trying them, that just feels like wasted money. But then about a week into the month I'll lose my energy for trying new games and I'll let the sub lapse and never try a bunch of the games I wanted to. It's the worst way to pay for games, even if on paper it's the cheapest for trying a bunch of them legally.

Very occasionally a game will come along that I know I want and will happily pay for immediately, and usually that means I'll give it a decent try.

The best experience for me is pirating a game and loving it so much I then buy it, that guarantees I'm going to play it a lot. The latest game that happened to me with was A Dance of Fire and Ice. I bought it like 5 times, once each for me and my two kids, and twice on phone, and I was completely happy to. I even built a custom rhythm controller for it.

Funny story though - the pirated version of ADOFAI puts savegames in user folders, but the steam version puts them in the game folder, so it merges the progress between users. So for that reason, the pirated version is better. I can't explain the discrepancy.

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/a64ef85085e7db98244dd2128b2674f02e7fd0dff3ba393525edeedcb5ad6044/detection

I downloaded it from androeed.ru, which is in the megathread. However, it has 16 detections, and it's labled trojan, and I never used androeed.ru before, so idk how trustable it is.

Still I'm tempted to install it since sandbox found no Network comms. But I'm new to piracy so I think I should ask here first.

Thanks for replying! Edit to provide a bit more info:

  1. This is a mod apk file for a paid game called sproggiwood, so I thought it would be normal to drop files like /libandroeedru.so, you know, to unlock game or something.

  2. The site androeed.ru is in the 2nd place in "Android Cracked/Modded App Markets & Repos" list, right after mobilism, so I thought it was a famous piracy site as well. (I'm new to piracy, so idk. Is it famous?)

  3. This file was uploaded to androeed at 2020, which means if it is indeed malicious, the site is unsafe since 2020, so it should be removed from megathread long time ago. Is the megathread that outdated?

  4. Trojan means it steals info via internet. And virustotal said it only contacted 5 domains: 1: clientservices.googleapis.com 2: connectivitycheck.gstatic.com 3: gmscompliance-pa.googleapis.com 4: gstatic.com 5: infinitedata-pa.googleapis.com Does this mean the detections are false positives or am I missing something?

I'm at a loss. Please help! Thank you very much.

I was shocked that Rockstar was caught using cracks in off-releases (!!!), then they tried to "crack" themselves, ran into their own anti-piracy measures and left it like that! The game is unplayable.

It's funny that the pirates didn't face any of these measures and cracked the game correctly.

After a recent data loss, I'm reconsidering various CODECs before re-encoding my re-pirated "loot". I'm looking to maintain a good balance between quality and file size as my previous files were HUGE. I've read about x264, h264, h265 & vp9 for video and it's between AAC or AC-3 for audio. I'm looking for long-term and broad device compatibility. Also, I'll be using FFBatch front-end for ffmpeg for re-encoding. So, fellow pirates, what are your libraries coded in? Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated.

I am struggling to get my proxy setup to work, as described here https://support.nordvpn.com/Connectivity/Proxy/1047410732/Proxy-setup-on-uTorrent.htm

I successfully got the nordvpn login and password, added it to the connection GUI of qbittorrent on my Debian gnu Linux machine, and applied the settings. I use the nl.socks.nordhold.net proxy server, and port 1080. But the final test with the magnet link from ipleak.net fails, and I never see the data from the magnet URL.

Does such a setup work for anyone else out there? How can I debug the setup?

So... During covid lockdowns I pretty much didn't leave my house. I did contract work that required zero human interaction, my groceries were contactless pickup, and none of my hobbies required other people. I recently started a new job and my social skills are downright awful. What are you supposed to do with your hands when you talk? What facial expressions should you make? How is your voice supposed to sound?

I did some internet research and found out I'm not the only one who lost their social skills after being isolated for 3 years. But anything I can find for advice is either generic/unhelpful, leads down the alt right rabbit hole, or is ungodly expensive. I'm hoping to find some basic introductory acting courses - voice training, method acting, improv, etc - that could help me stay flexible in conversations without freezing up. Is that possible? Are there any acting courses available to torrent?

I downloaded the installer from cmacked.com, and cleanmymac almost immediately recognized it as malware.

Basically the title, really. From what I can find so far these are either dead torrents or downloads from very questionable sources. There's the Russian DVD ISO rips on Internet Archive, but I can't get it to install on my PC for whatever reason.

I'm aware of the FitGirl repacks, but I want to install GTA IV the er, classic way (ISO files of course) and then apply some cracks + xliveless on top of the original installation, patched to 1.0.7.0. Thanks.

EDIT: For anyone trying to do the same, rutracker has a few GTA IV and EFLC ISO rips around and complete with serial generator for installation. I also did more searching and Internet Archive actually has at least one English DVD rips for GTA IV too (search GTA IV DVD), though you might still need the serial generator to complete installation.

Are there any groups on lemmy or discord that discusses movies releases in the pirated community? For example, the Barbie movie just dropped but it has Korean subs, got me thinking about looking for places to chat about the releases

So, I have used spotify premium for a long time and want to switch to using MP3 files. Is there a way I can find all of the songs I downloaded using SF Premium and copy them to a drive? TIA Comrades

Arrrr my fellow pirates, I wanted to install Starfield, but I seriously don't know how. I already downloaded a .rar file, but I don't know what else to do with it. I run Arch Linux.

Is that one ip address or one device?

I apologize in advance because I'm sure these probably feel like some stupid and duplicate questions. However, my attempts to find answers to these online have been met with answers that are sparse, oftentimes old (8+ years), and conflicting. I am looking into getting a seedbox. I decided to go with Whatbox because they seem to consistently have the best reputation. But I have some questions regarding the safety of doing this.

  • Whatbox (and a few other seedbox companies) offer seedboxes in the US. How can they do that without being immediately shut down? Do they have some kind of restrictions that could cause problems with using a US-hosted seedbox? I've read that there is much faster torrent connection with EU-hosted boxes, but is that worth the tradeoff for direct download speeds? (According to Whatbox's network test, I'd be at 20 MB/s for USA and 10 MB/s for Netherlands.)

  • How safe is paying via your real payment details? Pretty much every seedbox seems to take crypto, which sounds a lot safer but tacks on processing fees and inconvenience. (Also I am morally opposed to crypto so I would prefer not to use it.) This is the question that really seemed to have conflicting answers when I looked.

  • How safe is connecting via your real IP, or should you still connect to the seedbox via VPN? I know that you won't get dinged by your ISP, I mean in case of something like the host being taken down and their records being looked through.

Relatively new to this but, I finally got my media server up and working! I want to improve the success of the search function though. Is there a way to know if content is on usenet but my indexer is not good enough? I would rather steer clear of torrenting for now. How do I go about finding good indexer?

Hi. Following on from my previous giveaway last month, I now have FOUR TorrentLeech invites that I'm just giving away. No bullshit, just say you want it and it might be yours.

My IRL friends wouldn't have a clue what to do with these so I'm just giving them away again.

I'll probably leave this up for 24hrs or so and then, as before, choose four people at random. Good luck :)

EDIT: I closed this early due to the crazy amount of responses. I took the number of responses (160!) and ran it through an RNG 4 times to make this fair. Congratulations to @whereBeWaldo@lemmy.dbzer0.com @SoaringDE@feddit.de @notdeadyet@lemmy.dbzer0.com and @myersguy@lemmy.simpl.website

For those interested in public torrent usage. No surprise, after RARBG closed it's traffic has been mostly transfered to Torrent Galaxy.

A few weeks into the Premiere League season, anyone have a go-to streaming site now?

Just making sure I'm not missing something obvious:

Self-hosted Linux VM with protonVPN and QBitorrent installed on it.

QBittorrent networking bound only to ProtonVPN's virtual interface with killswitch and secure core enabled.

Auto updates enabled and a scripted alert system if ProtonVPN dies. Obviously everything with very secure unique passwords.

Is this a safe setup to run 24/7 to torrent and seed with?

Are there any significant risks I'm missing? Thanks, fellow sea salts!

Hello, I would like some info about VPN usage at private trackers. I know it is a per-tracker policy but I notice many being a bit hostile toward em.

Example: A user would like to join a tracker, put a seedbox to help em seeding et al, but even while they allow VPN usage, they don't allow signup with the VPN on (and that absolutely defeats the reason of not having the user's real IP/time logged to a server that may be somehow attacked or forced to give theirs users details for some reason, even if that never happened before in such server). In that case the user would be de-"pseudonimizing" all their future use of the site via VPN since if their users details ever leak that could bind the future use of the site trough a VPN to the initial non-vpn IP address. This example affects every PHD sister sites, I believe.

So, I have some questions on that issue, if someone could help:

    1. What is the ideal way to proceed in such situation? Are socks5 or other methods better accepted to unbind the use of the tracker site to the user IP address? (I'm talking about the trackers not even being able to handle such information in case something goes wrong. Not about an ISP or whoever else. Legality is not the concern here, but the very existence of the info itself).
    1. Is there any place where we can find this info about trackers policies on VPNs? I did search but never found anything unified.
    1. What trackers you know that simply don't care about the use of VPN? Which ones "don't care" but asks you to tell them (configure) your vpn details? Which ones absolutely don't allow them?

Thanks to anyone who can shed a light on these questions!

Other people are having the same issue, anyone knows if there's any solution out yet or if this is gonna be patched?

Specifically torrentbytes on Linux. On Linux mint I can download from other sites no problem but if I click a torrentbytes link, it sits there with no seeders forever. I installed arch and a client as a test and it downloaded no problem. Does anyone know why.? What's the difference between Linux mint and arch that seems to block torrent downloads?
