In short: Neighbours say they have been denied proper consultation around the plan to convert Fraser Suites in East Perth into 236 social and affordable housing units.

They want the state government to hold Q+A forums so residents' concerns can be heard.

What's next: A reference group will include members of the community to enable ongoing consultation.

In short: Internal documents from the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Attractions show more than 100 trees were felled in a prescribed burn on WA's south coast last year.

The fire burned 99 per cent of the prescribed area and damaged close to 100 rare red tingle trees that do not grow anywhere else on the planet.

What's next? The Leeuwin group, a consortium of WA's top environmental scientists, has urged the government to amend its burn program to avoid another mass felling.

In short: The City of Nedlands opposed plans to build a parkland on an A-class reserve near the new $34 million children's hospice in Swanbourne, which is due to open later this year.

The Lands Minister John Carey has moved to take Allen Park out of the hands of the council, saying it has not maintained the space in "any meaningful way".

What's next?
The move to excise control of the land will be put to state parliament in the middle of this month.

WA Annual Waste and Recycling Data (www.wasteauthority.wa.gov.au)

Image: Recycling report shows varying results in Perth's east - Cindy Cartojano

51 per cent of all waste generated came from the construction and demolition (C&D) stream, 29 per cent from the commercial and industrial (C&I) stream and 19 per cent from the municipal solid waste (MSW) stream.

...

The best performing kerbside system for material recovery was the three‑bin FOGO system. Three‑bin FOGO systems had an average recovery rate of 58 per cent, compared with only 14 per cent for two‑bin systems.

...

Trends Overall

waste generation and generation per capita has increased 18 and five per cent respectively since 2014-15.

In contrast, MSW generation per capita has declined from 625 kg in 2014-15 to 481 kg in 2023-24. This is likely driven by the move towards digital media consumption and lighter weight products and packaging.

Tonnes of waste recovered has increased 81 per cent from 2.7 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 4.8 million in 2023-24. This is driven by increases in C&D recycling.
