Columbia’s capitulation has turned a university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti university, a gated security zone with electronic entry controls, a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say, under penalty of severe sanctions. Disgracefully, all of this is being done to cover up one of the greatest crimes of this century, the ongoing genocide in Gaza, a crime in which Columbia’s leadership is now fully complicit.

The U.N. agency tasked with distributing aid in Gaza, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, or UNRWA, has maintained for months that it has received no specific evidence that Hamas or other armed groups were diverting its humanitarian aid in Gaza.

“These claims are used as a pretext to justify the aid distribution system supported by the Israeli authorities and the United States of America (so called GHF), which falls far from abiding to the humanitarian principles and international humanitarian law,” an UNRWA spokesperson told The Intercept in a statement.

Over the past week, Tel Aviv-Jaffa saw a myriad of protests, each with its own message. But the movements must now truly join forces – Gaza's children and Israel's hostages can't wait for us to build the perfect coalition

from Haaretz Today via email Israel News, Thursday, 31.07.2025 Linda Dayan

[an Israeli liberal perspective on various protests going on in Israel right now]

Each of these demonstrations carries its own message. At one, saying "starvation isn't a Jewish value" would be considered provocative; at another, signs declare "end the genocide." Some rail against the government for allowing Haredi youth to dodge the military draft, while others call for wholesale refusal to serve in the military at all.

They also emphasize that at this point, women and children in Gaza are in need of not just food but also specialized medical care to reverse severe malnutrition.

“The proposal is ludicrous,” said Dr. John Kahler, a pediatrician who co-founded a nonprofit group MedGlobal that supports re-feeding centers for children in Gaza. “Nothing new needs to get done. It’s a simple but not easy solution: Stop the bombing, open up the gates, and let the people who know how to do it, do it.”

No ceasefire will erase the smell of blood that clings to our memories. No ceasefire can bring back those we have lost. No one can compensate the orphans or widows. No one can delete the massacres, the death traps disguised as aid centers. No one can erase the images of bodies in pieces, of blood soaked into the floor, of children crushed beneath rubble, of injured and amputated people, of infants and fetuses killed in their mothers’ wombs, of starved people suffering from malnutrition. No one can make us forget the taste of nothing during starvation and the feeling of helplessness in front of seeing our futures destroyed.

As a #Palestinian doctor living and working in #Israel, in the midst of a longstanding conflict, I learned during my studies and work that injustice has been done to many populations living here. The occupation and coercion that Israel exercises over the Palestinian population in the occupied territories and the policy of discrimination against the Palestinian minority living within Israel cause serious harm to the right to health of these populations. Control over territories, expulsion, dispossession, violence, restriction of movement, establishment of settlements and apartheid cause great suffering to the population, prevent access to medical care and directly affect their health.

A court in Israel has released to house arrest an Israeli settler accused of fatally shooting a Palestinian activist in the occupied West Bank.

The suspect, identified as Yinon Levi, was placed under house arrest on Tuesday after a Magistrate Court in Jerusalem declined to keep him in custody.

Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Levi faced charges of manslaughter and unlawful firearm use in connection with the killing of 31-year-old Palestinian activist and English teacher Awdah Hathaleen, who was shot dead on Monday night in the village of Umm al-Kheir, south of Hebron.

Hathaleen was well known for his activism, including helping the creators of the Oscar-winning film No Other Land, which documents Israeli settler and soldier attacks on the Palestinian community of Masafer Yatta.

Mile after mile of grey rubble - the view from a plane dropping aid to Gaza (Sally Lockwood | Sky News, 2025-07-28)

>> Sky News goes on board a Royal Jordanian Air Force plane for one of the first aid drop flights since Israel announced they could resume.

>> As land approaches, I look down. The ground is modern and built up - we're still over southern Israel.

>> Then a few short minutes later, it's clear we've crossed Gaza's border.

>> The ground turns grey, the shapes of buildings disappear, there are no cars, no people.

>> You can see the outline of communities and villages that are now flattened…

>> And Monday's flight came with strict media conditions.

>> We were told the Israeli side had warned that any shots of Gaza filmed from the air could result in these aid flights being cancelled.

>> But Israel's tight grip has not stopped the images from Gaza getting out …

Activist Who Helped Film “No Other Land” Shot and Killed by Israeli Settler

“Israeli settlers have murdered our beloved hero, Awdah Hathaleen, from the Um Al-Khair community in Masafer Yatta,” Amro wrote on social media. “Awdah stood with dignity and courage against oppression. His loss is a deep wound to our hearts and our struggle for justice. May he rest in peace. We will never forget him.”
