  1. Links to news stories from...

  4. ...would make people who see the headline think, “That has got to be a story from The Onion, America’s Finest News Source.”

Please also avoid duplicates.

Comments and post content must abide by the server rules for Lemmy.world and generally abstain from trollish, bigoted, or otherwise disruptive behavior that makes this community less fun for everyone.

Look, I get it. The gargantuan shit-show that is U.S. politics and the American descent into fascism is on everyone's minds. It's certainly on mine.

But the point of this community is to highlight weird news stories that make you go, "By golly, I thought I was reading a headline from The Onion. You know, America's finest news source." A lot of stories being posted lately don't even remotely fit that.

That doesn't mean political stories aren't allowed here, but they must have headlines that would make people pause and wonder if it's a story from The Onion. Straight up regular, non Onion-y headlines don't fit.

Trump said on his Truth Social platform on Friday that he had told his team to fire Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, who was nominated by Joe Biden in 2023 and began her role in January 2024.

“I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,” the president wrote.

“She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes,” Trump said, claiming without evidence that McEntarfer had massaged figures to help the former president.

The renderings are complete, the architects and contractors have been hired. After at least 15 years of talking about it, President Trump is building a ballroom at the White House. According to the White House, the work will begin this September, with a price tag of $200 million.

"President Trump is a builder at heart and has an extraordinary eye for detail," said White House chief of staff Susie Wiles in a statement on Thursday. "The President and the Trump White House are fully committed to working with the appropriate organizations to preserving the special history of the White House while building a beautiful ballroom that can be enjoyed by future Administrations and generations of Americans to come."

The buggy wasn't driven by Trump, but is thought to be his "getaway vehicle" should anyone open fire on the course. The black, obviously armored vehicle followed Trump around as he played golf, with many experts noting that it bore similarities to "The Beast" — Trump's protective vehicle stateside.
