You are in an empty room, standing near a wall facing the opposite wall. You roll a ball and measure the time it takes the ball to hit the opposite and reach back to you.

You repeat this again - but now in the middle of the way there is a time traveling portal, and in the other side is the same middle of the room but in 1969. The ball maintained its speed vector in the transition.

How long does it take the ball to reach you?

Dating apps and irl just isn't doing it. Escorts are pricey after awhile and not as satisfying and meaningful. Plus I don't wanna have to pay women for play every one time hookup. Any suggestions?

Briar is hard to regulate because of it having no server, hence I was wondering: are they an alternative to whatever the EU is doing with general messaging apps?

AI's become so invasively popular and I've seen more evidence of its ineffectiveness than otherwise, but what I dislike most about it is that many run on datasets of stolen data for the sake of profitability à la OpenAI and Deepseek

https://mashable.com/article/openai-chatgpt-class-action-lawsuit https://petapixel.com/2025/01/30/openai-claims-deepseek-took-all-of-its-data-without-consent/

Are there any AI services that run on ethically obtained datasets, like stuff people explicitly consented to submitting (not as some side clause of a T&C), data bought by properly compensating the data's original owners, or datasets contributed by the service providers themselves?

Banks will often have dye packs that can be mixed in with bills that are given to bank robbers. They're explosively rigged, so that when triggered, they will contaminate an entire large container full of bills. So the robber is just left with a bunch of weirdly dyed bills that scream "robbery money."

So, just for entertainment purposes, would it be possible to purchase just the dye used in those cartridges, or a similar dye?

And then imagine you took your own completely legal and taxed currency. You withdraw money right from your account at the ATM. So no actual theft is involved. You withdraw however much you want to dye, dye it, and now you have a large collection of purple money that screams "robbery money!" And then you just spend it as normal, casually handing what appears to be criminal evidence to random services, restaurants, and stores.

Would this be legal? Is there anything preventing you from dying currency, if there is no intention or act of counterfeiting? Can I just dye legal cash purple if I want?

If one actually did this, the obvious risk would be having the cops raid your house thinking you're a bank robber. But if you were willing to take that risk, maybe didn't have any weapons or anything illegal in your home? Maybe not so great a concern for some.

But in terms of actual criminal liability, would this be legal? Is there anything legally stopping you from making your town think you're a gangster who robbed a bank and somehow got away with it?

As a disclaimer, I'm not actually anti-AI, but tons of slop is made with it. It's the same as those TTS Reddit reading videos from back in the day or any other shitty trend from the last 10 years.

I'm old enough to know to dismiss internet noise as vastly out of touch with the actual silent majority of internet users, so this moral panic over slop to me was just zoomers who grew up on reaction videos thinking that wasn't slop to the folks who came before, but I was on a train, looking around, I saw like 4/5 people I could see were on their phones, watching clearly AI-generated content, on TikTok or something similar based on the UI elements, one of them even had it on speaker for some reason.

All of them seemed around my age in the mid-20s.

Thing is, I don't really understand it, what's the appeal? I'm not asking about being on your phone, but specifically short-form videos about nothing specific.

When I looked it up, lots of talk about addiction and dopamine loops, but I can't relate to that, I assume this maybe has something to do with me having ADHD and the theory that my dopamine system doesn't really work "normally".

I tried watching TikTok before, but it definitely wasn't stimulating for me, I got bored pretty quick. If I was on a train and really bored looking out the window listening to music, I'd whip out a Wikipedia page or read the comments on Lemmy or look up a random question on my mind.

Why? Well in my experience - text is a lot easier to consume you can consume more information faster, hence to me - it's more stimulating. Works both ways too - It's just easier to express yourself quickly and clearly in text than by speaking. Even typing on my phone feels a helluva lot less taxing and more stimulating than speaking/listening.

It's not like I don't watch videos, I do have videos on in the background sometimes when I'm tidying up or whatever, where I prefer long-form stuff so it just fades into the background and stays consistent and non-distracting. If I watch a movie it's often something I kinda need to mentally work myself up for. I definitely wouldn't be able to pay attention to a video playing on my phone.

So my question is - what's so stimulating about this type of stuff in particular?

I want to hear about your experience so I can understand it better.

I'd like to understand it, because otherwise it feels like most people are weird aliens, driven by forces beyond my comprehension, and it's not nice :(

I'm definitely not talking about putting aluminium foil inside the microwave because that's stupid and dangerous.

I'm wondering if you cover the microwave in aluminium to lessen interfere or block interference by blocking the interfering signal with aluminium foil.

I can't move my microwave because I already moved it from a spot before that made the door inconvenient to open and hard to grab food from and I live in a rental house so can't move the jack

They keep playing that clip of his caddy dropping a ball, and making fun of how he tried to do it slyly but it was obvious.

I just saw it again on Colbert, and I legitimately think the caddy is only trying to fool trump.

trump is 100% the guy to blame caddies if he fucks up, so the only caddies he likes are ones that can trick him into thinking he's great. No one he's playing with would ever call it out.

The only person they need to fool out there, is trump...

He legitimately might think he's really a generational golfer. For the same reason every billionaire legit thinks they're a genius.

What were they made from, like mercury lead arsenide or something?

Ive seen some youtube videos about people who start with very little money and do stuff to double it. Im wondering what a everyday joe would do with 1 dollar and 24 hours to earn more? Would you resell water bottles to people, get a job, gamble? or something else? what is your game plan?

Maybe we have a future with no charging cords and just being at home and your phone is automatically charging from your "Wireless Charging Router".

Sorry if this sounds stupid lol. I like to imagine weird ways we can use technology.

10k? 100k? A million?

I am not talking about calculating with numbers, but rather the point where numbers stop being comprehensible, or "no longer mean anything".

Try visualizing exactly 10000 apples in your mind.

I love gospel music. I don't mean the overproduced crap they play at megachurches, I'm talking about a piano, bass, and a stomp/clap choir in a black southern community church led one or more strong, usually female, singers.

I've never heard this music that wasn't about God and that kind of puts me off so I'm wondering...is there gospel MUSIC without the gospel LYRICS?

[Edit]I'm talking Blues Brother church scene music - thanks shittydwarf for the link

Like for example: a drug raid, or they're accusing you of illegal hacking, or some sort of TheSilkRoad type of stuff.

Assuming the original investigation find no evidence and leads to no charges, could they use the pirated content that you have as a last ditch effort to get you in prison? Not distributing, just personal use.

Not limited to any specific jurisdiction, just want to know what happens in general.

Hi all. Hope this is allowed here. I've been toying with the idea of getting a cat for the past several months now. I've actually never really interacted with cats, though. I don't even know if I'm allergic to them. I visited my coworker a couple of times and one of her cats rubs up against my leg to either greet or mark me and then goes elsewhere.

Some info on me:

  • Early 30s, lives alone, works ~40 hours a week in a NON wfh job (so I will not be home for significant portions of the week)
  • I do not have much of a social life, so most of my time outside of work is spent at home
  • I am very comfortable financially to own a pet. I frequently pay vet bills for my mom's dog who has ailing health.
  • I own my own place, ~1200 sq ft (111 sq m), and do not plan to leave any time soon
  • I do not plan to move, have a partner, or have children
  • It is impossible for me to ever wfh with my career and I do not want to change my career
  • I am familiar with taking care of dogs, and took care of my mom's dog on my own temporarily for 1 year without issue
  • I am only interested in owning a single pet, not two (I know people frequently get 2 cats to keep each other company)
  • I am interested in an adult cat, not a kitten
  • I don't do lengthy traveling, however I frequently visit my mom (and vice versa) for a couple of days at a time

One big important thing to note is that my mother and I take turns visiting each other every couple of weeks. It involves us traveling a couple of hours by car and then one of us staying with the other (either my place or my mom's place) for 2 days. My mom has a dog who is quite old and has ailing health, so I'm not sure how much longer she will live. Her dog is a small dog ~15 lbs, but is not necessarily great with other animals. She is ok with other dogs if they do not antagonize her, but I don't know if she would fight with a cat or not as she has never met one. Her dog also has bad separation anxiety. I have enough rooms in my house that I could separate the cat and dog when my mom visits, but idk if that is a ok or not. It also means that I might leave a cat home alone for a couple of days when I visit my mom. I have read that people can do this with cats, but I don't know if it is a good idea. I would plan to purchase pet cams, auto feeders, etc.

I still haven't had the balls to go down to the local Human Society and ask them about cats and cat adoption, but I don't know. I am thinking about going there tomorrow. Is my situation too complicated for me to have a cat? I feel like mentally it would be nice to have a companion to come home to every day. One of the reasons why I've never bothered to look into getting a pet is because I live alone and don't work from home and because my mom and I visit each other. Although I have experience with dogs, it seems like a cat might be more doable for my life situation.

Would this be too poor of a life for a cat?

Thanks for your time, all.

Mostly the chaos of the Trump and Bibi administrations mean I don't really want to live in either Israel or the US atm, was wondering if Canada is a good place to go to? I'm a rather left-liberal woman and I have a bacholers degree in education, so I have the means to move to another country but wondering if its worth it
