Hello Everyone!

The release of Frontiers has been an intense and exciting time for the team. Populated civilisations are something the community have requested for a long time, and it’s incredibly rewarding for us to see players claiming their first settlement, meeting their first citizens, and experimenting with all the new base parts. We love seeing your process of discovery, and are often blown away by your extraordinary creativity with base building. Thank you for sharing your screenshots and stories!

Today, we are releasing version 3.64 of No Man’s Sky, and we are very excited to announce an event we know players have been anticipating. Expedition Three: Cartographers begins today!

In the Pioneers expedition, travellers embarked on a long journey across the galaxy: exploring, trading, building, mining and rendezvousing across five different planets. The second expedition, Beachhead, confronted travellers with a tightly-woven mystery, and a race against time to unravel it, with players all across the world eventually helping to summon the legendary SSV Normandy SR1 from Mass Effect.

Expedition seasons give us the opportunity to craft No Man’s Sky experiences that differ from the established game modes, and Cartographers is yet another unique journey, focused primarily on deep exploration of a single planet. This season places all expeditioners on the toxic world of Gisto Major, where their bespoke starship will require specialist attention to repair and launch into space.

Cartographers begins today, and will run for approximately two months.

Anniversary T-Shirt

To help commemorate the fifth anniversary of No Man’s Sky, we are releasing this stylish black and gold t-shirt, available for a limited time in the Official NMS Merchandise store here (Americas and Canada) or here (rest of world).

Twitch Drop Campaign

We’re also very pleased to confirm the dates for a new campaign of Twitch drops! This weekend, from Thursday 9th September to Monday 13th September, tune into streamers playing No Man’s Sky on Twitch to earn an exciting new spread of in-game rewards.

Our very first Twitch drop campaign earlier this year worked out really well – in addition to welcoming a number of new travellers to No Man’s Sky, and offering existing players a new way to earn rewards, the campaign helped bring a new audience to streamers who have supported us from the very beginning, which means a lot to us!

Full details are available on the Twitch Drops page here.

Community Research

Polo’s Quicksilver Synthesis Companion is exhibiting almost organic-seeming emotion as travellers unlock the Antimatter Observation Orb, Synthesis Core, and Bubble Vat: items fashioned in the likeness of their own anomalous home. The thought of these items decorating planetary bases makes them emit a few delighted sparks.

They have hinted that they are next planning to synthesise something nautical-themed, inspired by the ancient maritime trade vessels of the Gek. Complete missions at the Nexus to contribute towards unlocking the Bubble Vat and unveiling the next batch of exotic items!

Development Update

Patch 3.64 is releasing today, and will be available for all platforms soon. We will continue to listen out for issues reported by the community. Thank you for playing! In the longer term, we are continuing to work on features and content for No Man’s Sky, and look forward to sharing more when we’re ready.

Frontiers: Introducing Update 3.6

Become Overseer of your very own procedurally generated alien settlement in update 3.6, FRONTIERS. Make choices, guide your citizens, develop new structures and defend your people from the Sentinels. Or, take advantage of a massive overhaul of base building to construct your own dream base.

http://i3.ytimg.com/vi/udDXRQMPyKQ/hqdefault.jpg
YouTube: No Man's Sky Frontiers Trailer

Planetary settlements

Clusters of trailblazing aliens have banded together to build planetary settlements. These pioneering settlements, full of life and promise, can now be found in inhabited systems all across the universe.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/planetary-settlements-1-1040w.jpg

Found your own settlement

Earn the respect of the citizens to become overseer of your very own settlement. As overseer, you’ll be responsible for all aspects of the settler’s lives – naming the town, choosing what to build, commissioning festivals, resolving arguments, repelling the attacks of the Sentinels, and much more.

Breathtaking nebulas

Interstellar clouds have gathered in deep space to form spectacular multi-coloured nebulas, making space skies more beautiful than ever.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/breathtaking-nebulas-5-1040w.jpg

Base building grid menu

The base building menu has been totally overhauled. Parts are now laid out in a clear grid, allowing fast access to even the rarest of parts.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/base-building-grid-menu-1-1040w.jpg

Each settlement unique

Every settlement is procedurally generated, with unique buildings, neighbourhood layouts, colour schemes, and interior and exterior decoration.

More save slots

A new save streaming system has been implemented, making more efficient use of memory. Very large saves are now supported, allowing for thousands of hours of play.

The number of possible save slots has been increased from 5 to 15, and the save select screen now supports scrolling.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/more-save-slots-1-1040w.jpg

As this new save system changes the format of save data, all existing saves have been automatically backed up. On PC, these may be found under the new strbackup folder within your save directory, usually in C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\HelloGames\NMS\

Enhanced destruction effects

Destruction is crunchier and more satisfying, with reworked visual effects for asteroid destruction, Exocraft crashes, crystal mining, terrain editing, and enemy explosions.

Help settlements grow

Settlements start off small and modest, with a sparse population and only a few buildings scattered around their town centre. Choose what to build and provide resources to construct new buildings and transform this ramshackle collection of dwellings into a flourishing town!

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/help-settlements-grow-2-1040w.jpg

Different building types influence how your settlement grows. Build farms and factories to increase productivity, or choose to prioritise the comfort and leisure of your citizens with a more relaxed approach to frontier life.

Hundreds of new base parts

Construct your own settlement-inspired bases with a huge array of new base parts. These detailed, high-definition parts are quick and easy to snap together, and yet produce a huge diversity of exciting sci-fi buildings. These new structural sets of timber, stone and alloy pieces create a tremendous range of possible building shapes.

Over a hundred new decorative parts create all-new ways to add personal character to bases.

Steam trading cards and badges

Playing No Man’s Sky on Steam will now earn trading card drops, with a total of 15 cards available.

Collect trading cards to craft badges, and earn emoticons and backgrounds for your Steam profile.

Defend settlements from sentinels

Sentinels regard all pockets of civilisation with hostility, and as time passes, a prosperous settlement will inevitably draw sentinel attention. Research defensive buildings to keep the alert level low, or engage attacking drones in combat!

Combat effects – impacts, player weapon effects, Sentinel effects and more – have had a visual overhaul, creating a more dramatic and impactful experience for those who choose to take the fight to the Sentinels.

More saved discoveries

The number of discoveries that can be saved locally before uploading has been doubled.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/more-saved-discoveries-1-1040w.jpg

Settler thoughts

Glimpse into the inner lives of settlers with insight into their thoughts and intentions as they go about their daily business.

![https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/settler-thoughts-2-926w.png(https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/settler-thoughts-2-926w.png)

Twitch campaign

No Man’s Sky in-game rewards will soon be available to earn by watching streamers play the game on Twitch. Full details of how to sign up are available on the Twitch Drops page here.

The campaign will reward viewers with an exciting new set of items, including unique appearance customisations, base parts, exclusive companions, ships and more.

Streamlined building interface

The building UI has been totally overhauled. In placement mode, this new contextual menu allows quick access to scale, rotation and recolouring options. In the brand-new edit mode, builders can quickly select and edit any existing pieces in-place, without having to delete or replace them.

Resolve citizen disputes

Settlement life is not always harmonious! As overseer, you will occasionally be called upon to help resolve disagreements between settlers. Do your best to be a fair and compassionate judge, or cast blame widely and use the fines to boost the settlement’s finances – the choice is yours.

Earn resources from your settlement

A highly productive settlement can generate a steady income of lucrative products and substances. A populous, happy, and productive settlement will provide a generous supply of resources to its overseer every day.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/earn-resources-1-1040w.jpg

Enhanced environmental effects

Visual effects have been improved across planetary environments. Dust kicked up by Exocraft, Walkers, starships and radioactive vents now whorls with more depth and character, and fireflies will gather around the street lamps in settlements.

Advanced building controls

The basebuilding toolset has been expanded with several advanced controls. Free placement mode disables all forms of snapping, and allows parts to be placed inside other parts. This advanced mode allows builders to place parts wherever they choose – even in mid-air!

In addition, the ability to duplicate base parts makes it simple to quickly match your base’s existing style.

Move base parts

Re-architecting and renovating your bases is now easier than ever before, with the ability to pick up and move previously-constructed base parts.

Make important decisions

Every settlement has a unique set of features, influencing the population, happiness, and productivity of its citizens. Keep these stats balanced to ensure a smoothly functioning society.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/make-important-decisions-1-1040w.jpg

Under the governance of a thoughtful and benevolent overseer, a settlement may be able to rid itself of undesirable features such as radioactivity or parasitic eggs, and acquire desirable features such as well-educated citizens, or plentiful nanobots.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/make-important-decisions-2-1040w.jpg

Enhanced multi-tool effects

Wield a more impressive Multi-tool with revamped visual effects – the impacts and trails for the Boltcaster, Blaze Javelin, Scatter Blaster, Pulse Spitter, Plasma Grenade and Mining Beam have all been given a new breath of life.

Contextual base parts

Structural base parts such as walls, windows and arches will now intelligently select an appropriate variation – foundation, mid or top – for their position within a structure, making it quick and easy to construct aesthetically pleasing and highly varied bases.

Greet visitors

Settlements attract visitors, and visiting aliens may request to join your settlement, both increasing and enhancing your population with their **unique specialist...

Hello,

Five years ago this week, we launched No Man’s Sky. For the first time we watched players all over the world begin to explore the universe we had created. It was a nerve wracking moment and the culmination of five years of very hard work for our tiny team (the average team size was just 6, and at launch was just 15).

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/app/uploads/2021/08/KeyArtSymmetricalA2.png

We knew this was the start of a journey, but never expected what a wild ride it would be. Today we’d like to take a moment to appreciate this milestone together. It hasn’t always been easy, but the thing that has been our guiding star throughout has been the players and the community. Behind every update, every video, every feature and line in a patch note is a team that cares so deeply for this game.

We’re so proud of what we’ve built and the major advances that the game has received. Multiplayer, base-building, VR, cross-play, next-gen updates, pets, expeditions, mechs, living ships… it’s a pretty long list. Watching that video even the team is surprised by just how much No Man’s Sky has changed over the years, but also how close it has stuck to that central vision of building a universe to explore.

All our updates have been free, and the community grows with every passing update. Today we’re enjoying a stronger player base than at any point in the past five years. Given that growth, we’re thrilled to see that the positivity and welcoming nature of the community holds strong. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who contribute to creating a safe and nurturing environment for any new travellers who find their way into our universe.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/app/uploads/2021/08/Billboard.jpg

Over the last five years No Man’s Sky has realised a shared dream we had of creating a game where you could explore an infinite universe, where every planet was undiscovered and unexplored. I’m glad that we’ve been able to share that dream with players, but even more glad that, five years on, we continue to be excited about finding new and innovative things to build on from what we’ve already achieved.

Today it seems fitting that we celebrate the anniversary in our own way, by teasing the next update. FRONTIERS will be our seventeenth (!) and we’re excited to bring it to you very soon.

Our journey continues.

Sean

I really, really like NMS. It's basically what I wanted from Freelancer back then. It "only" needs "a few" things for me to be the nearly perfect space exploration game:

  • a story with actual characters
    • no lore, but a story
    • maybe nice little conspiracy with you inbetween a few factions like in Freelancer?
    • Or the clone thing from Everspace 1?
    • I'd pay for this as an expansion for maybe 20-40€.
  • way better flight mechanics/combat
    • Everspace 1. Period.
  • better balanced permadeath mode.
    • it's super hard to get to your starter ship if you spawn on a harsh planet
    • it's pure RNG, if you spawn on an "easy" planet the whole game becomes a cakewalk
    • anyway, once you find your ship and warp to orbit, you can barely die.
    • you can die from bullshit however. I lost ~20 hours of permadeath save because I landed on a space station, the collision of which disappeared suddenly, I fell through but a wave of damage hit me with no way to escape
    • disable camera mode, it's basically a cheat.
  • roguelike mode in addition to permadeath
    • you can "park" any secondary ships on the Anomaly or your freighter
    • if you die, your freighter crew doesn't die with you
    • save game is not deleted, but reset to 0 units, all inventory is lost, all ships but one are lost and that's your new starter ship
    • every time you die in roguelite mode, you get sent to a harsher planet.
    • if you died 10 times, you'll get to a planet without air and a single ferrite node in the distance
  • on-foot combat like in Elite Dangerous.
    • doesn't even need to be better than in Elite or what Squadron 42 is trying.
    • Randomly generated missions are fine.
    • Maybe add a few story missions, but you don't even need many different base parts or map layouts for that.

What would you need for it to be perfect? I think I'll edit this post later.

Elite Dangerous is too boring for me. It's basically just warp–get fuel–warp–get fuel. The planets all look the same. In NMS the variety of planets is great since 2.0 or so!

Update 3.5, Prisms, dramatically refreshes the No Man’s Sky experience with a range of new visual features and technologies. The universe has never looked better, with reflections, new texture effects, more biome detail, improved lighting, new skies, new warp effects, creature fur, and a host more besides.

Screen Space Reflections

No Man’s Sky now supports screen space reflection (SSR) technology for PC, next-generation consoles, and Xbox One X.

Screen space reflections have been used to add stunning reflective surfaces and to improve lighting quality in the Space Anomaly, space stations, Atlas stations, freighter hangars, derelict freighters and more!

Busy locations feel more dynamic than ever, with starships and lifeforms creating reflections as they move, and lighting in reflective areas feels higher quality and more realistic.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/screen-space-reflections-1-1040w.jpg

Volumetric Lighting

New styles of volumetric lights have been introduced, with coloured and directional volumetrics used to add atmosphere all across the universe.

Examples include the menacing searchlights of Sentinel drones, the soft glow of bioluminescent flora, and the bright headlights of starships and exocraft.

https://nmswp.azureedge.net/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/volumetric-lighting-2-1040w.jpg

Hyperdrive Warp Effects

Interstellar travel has undergone a sensory overhaul, with the audio and visuals of the warp experience dramatically reworked.

Deep Learning Super Sampling

PC players with compatible 30-series NVIDIA graphics cards can take advantage of DLSS, gaining vastly improved performance and visual quality.

DLSS is an NVIDIA RTX technology which incorporates anti-aliasing and super sampling techniques to improve image detail at higher resolutions, without compromising framerate. Learn more on the NVIDIA site.

Richer Caves

Caves and subterranean biomes are now even more alien and exotic. Fungus and flora glows with new atmospheric lighting effects, and environments are more detailed and more diverse.

Parallax Occlusion Mapping

New parallax occlusion mapping technology has been used to bring additional depth and definition in previously flat surfaces. Many textured surfaces in the Space Anomaly and planetary structures now appear more detailed.

Meteorological Rewards

Hazardous weather events such as meteors or lightning impacts now have a chance to spawn valuable objects, creating lucrative opportunities for explorers who brave extreme planetary conditions.

Improved Torch Visuals

The Exosuit torch now benefits from improvements to its visual effects as well dynamic brightness and positioning improvements.

Refractions

New lighting technology brings refractions to No Man’s Sky. The new effects can be seen all over the universe, including on glass base parts, starship cockpits, forcefields, alien bubbles and more!

Appearance Modifier UI Refresh

The UI for the Appearance Modifier has been refreshed for a cleaner and clearer customisation experience.

Exotic Companions

The range of creatures that can be adopted as your companion has been hugely increased to encompass virtually every lifeform you encounter.

Dramatic Starfields

The variety, quality and number of stars in the sky has been significantly increased – a dazzling reminder of the vastness of the universe.

ByteBeat Sharing and Drum Improvements

The Bytebeat Synthesizer now allows you to save tracks in a personal library and use them as a custom soundtrack to your exploration experience.

The Bytebeat Library also allows you to send and share tracks with other players, spreading your music across the stars.

Significant improvements have been made to the ByteBeat’s drum synthesizer, allowing for the creation of meatier drum loops and driving rhythms.

Moveable Freighter Bases

When purchasing a new freighter, your existing freighter base is automatically transferred and reconstructed. In addition, freighter base layouts can now be reset at any time from the Freighter Upgrade Control terminal.

Extra Planetary Details

Players on next-generation consoles or PC players who use Ultra settings will see a dramatic increase in planetary detail across a whole range of environments.

Improved Rain Effects

Rain effects have been significantly improved. Rainstorms are heavier, and the droplets themselves refract the light, bringing storms to life in a new way.

As the rain pours, the planet’s surface now becomes slick and damp, and even planetary creatures and the Exosuit itself slowly become soaked through.

Synthesis Laboratory

A new terminal has been added to the blueprint research area of the Space Anomaly. This new automated research station will provide recipes for crafting components, in exchange for nanites.

Particle Effect Improvements

Explosions have been enhanced for a more satisfying burst when destroying sentinel drones, blasting through asteroids, and shooting down hostile spacecraft.

Quality of Life Improvements

A number of UI and quality of life improvements have been added. These include: an icon to show when new items have been added to an inventory; improvements to the UI when receiving several blueprints at the same time; and improvements to planetary charts. Charts will no longer be consumed should they fail to find a building.

Hello everyone,

Thank you to everyone playing the Expedition Two – Beachhead Update, especially those taking the time to report any issues they encounter via Zendesk or console crash reporting.

We are listening closely to your feedback, and have identified and resolved a number of issues. These fixes are included in patch 3.42, which will be live on all platforms soon.

Patch Notes

  • Fixed an issue that could cause the Galaxy Map to fail to draw a path to long-distance mission destinations.
  • Implemented a recovery fix for players affected by a previous issue that removed the correct options from Nada and Polo. Specialist Polo will now always offer directions to an Atlas Station or Black Hole.
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent the Collective Consciousness milestone from being marked complete after purchasing the Myth Beacon.

We will continue to release patches as issues are identified and resolved. If you experience any issues, let us know by submitting a bug report.

Thank you,

Hello Games

Hello,

For the last week the No Man’s Sky community have worked together on the new Beachhead expedition, solving the puzzle of its hidden and encrypted goals. Today is a lovely moment, as explorers are discovering that at the end of this mystery is the appearance of the legendary SSV Normandy SR1 from Mass Effect!

YouTube: No Man's Sky x Mass Effect - Normandy Trailer

There has been crazy speculation as to where this mysterious voyage would lead. Huge thank you to the dedicated travellers involved: those who figured out the purpose of the “Historiographical Dosimeter” and how to use it; those who cracked the code and translated the messages hidden in a secret alphabet; those who pieced together the story of the coming of the Normandy out of flux fragments at monoliths all across the universe; and to everyone involved in the colossal research effort to unlock the Myth Beacon and summon the ‘weapon’ into existence!

This is a lovely little Easter Egg moment, and something hopefully no one was expecting.

We are thrilled and flattered that BioWare and EA let us pay tribute in this way. As huge fans of the series, it’s a lovely moment for sci-fi fans. Like everyone else we’ve been rediscovering the amazing universe of Mass Effect through the release of the Legendary Edition. I still have chills every time I see this incredibly iconic ship warping in, and was delighted to see so many people have the same reaction.

All players now have until the 31st May to undertake this expedition for themselves if they wish to ultimately add the SSV Normandy SR1 to their frigate fleet for good.

As this is our fifth anniversary year, we have some other surprises up our sleeves, with more information coming very soon.

Our Journey Continues,
Sean
