President Donald Trump opposed an Israeli plan to kill Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to two sources, amid ongoing waves of tit-for-tat strikes between Israel and Iran as the US president is making publicly and privately clear he prefers to keep the United States out of the fray for now.

Over the weekend, one senior US official told CNN, the Israelis had an opportunity to kill Iran’s supreme leader. The US communicated to Israel that Trump opposed that plan, the senior official said, and the plan was not executed. Trump is eager to de-escalate, wary of becoming bogged in another Middle East war and highly attuned to the changing politics of his party.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday morning that there are “so many false reports of conversations that never happened and I’m not going to get into that” when asked about reports of the plan by Fox News’ Bret Baier on “Special Report.” A spokesperson for Netanyahu told CNN that the reports of Trump rejecting an Israeli plan are “FAKE.”

THE Air India crash pilot was hailed a hero by locals yesterday after he diverted his doomed jet at the last second to avoid their apartment block.

All 18 families in the three-storey building under the flight path are convinced they owe their lives to Captain Sumeet Sabharwal — whose Boeing 787 Dreamliner was heading for them when it suffered a loss of engine thrust after take-off.

But with feet to spare, he managed to divert the plane carrying 242 passengers and crew towards a patch of grassland.

The locals raced from their homes in Ahmedabad when a fireball from 90 tons of aviation fuel ignited as the plane slammed into the ground next to a medical college.

The aircraft obliterated the top two floors of a disused four-storey military building.

But the fire tore through the college’s hostel, killing dozens of students and staff who were having lunch in the canteen.

MI6 will be led by a woman for the first time in the foreign intelligence service's 116-year history.

Blaise Metreweli, who joined the Secret Intelligence Service in 1999, will become the 18th chief of the organisation and take over from Sir Richard Moore later this year.

She is currently responsible for technology and innovation at the service and said she was "proud and honoured" to have been asked to lead.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called the appointment "historic" at a time "when the work of our intelligence services has never been more vital".

MI6 is tasked with gathering intelligence overseas to improve the UK's security, with its core aims being to stop terrorism, disrupt the activities of hostile states and bolster cyber-security.

Its chief, commonly referred to as "C", is the only publicly named member of the service.

Ms Metreweli, 47, is currently Director General "Q" - head of the crucial technology and innovation division that aims to keep the identities of secret agents secret, and come up with new ways to evade adversaries like China's biometric surveillance.

"MI6 plays a vital role - with MI5 and GCHQ - in keeping the British people safe and promoting UK interests overseas," she said.

"I look forward to continuing that work alongside the brave officers and agents of MI6 and our many international partners."

Ms Metreweli, who studied anthropology at the University of Cambridge, has previously held director level roles in MI5 - MI6's sister, domestic security agency - and spent most of her career working in the Middle East and Europe.

On the King's overseas and international birthday honours list in 2024, she received the Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for her services to British foreign policy.

Avichay Adraee, a spokesman in Arabic for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), says: “Fake Iranian media. This news being spread by Iranian media is completely baseless.”

Iran has claimed that it shot down two Israeli fighter jets during the ongoing military conflict between the two countries. The jets were reportedly brought down by Iran’s air defences on Friday, according to Iranian news agency Tasnim.

One of the pilots, said to be a woman, has been captured, the report added.

This claim was also shared by the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of Iran’s embassy in New Delhi, India. The post stated, “Iran’s air defense forces have shot down two Israeli F-35 fighter jets and intercepted several hostile drones.”
