Sekou Odinga was a globally recognized Black liberation activist, member of Malcolm X’s Organization of Afro-American Unity, founding member of both the New York City chapter and the International Section of the Black Panther Party, and former US political prisoner who survived 33 years of state captivity before his release in 2014.

Prosecuted as one of the “Panther 21” in New York City, Odinga was a prominent historical figure, having been featured on Democracy Now! and in numerous documentaries, concerts, mass public events, and major news outlets.

In addition to being featured in the widely circulated social movement texts Can’t Jail the Spirit (2002) and Hauling Up the Morning: Writings & Art by Political Prisoners & Prisoners of War in the U.S. (1990), Odinga published his writing in Look for Me in the Whirlwind: From the Panther 21 to 21st-Century Revolutions (PM Press, 2017) and Black Power Afterlives: The Enduring Significance of the Black Panther Party (Haymarket Books, 2020).

A survivor of state torture and the FBI’s notorious Counterintelligence Program (COINTELPRO), Sekou Odinga is both celebrated and admired by freedom and justice movements worldwide, exemplifying persistence, courage, and principled adherence to freedom struggle under the most repressive circumstances imaginable.

According to public records, Southern Press hired Maria Leticia Patricio’s labor contracting firm to find dozens of seasonal employees to work in its fields for much of 2020. Less than a year later Patricio was indicted as the alleged ringleader of a $200 million human trafficking ring.

Prosecutors claim the “Patricio transnational criminal organization” subjected dozens of Mexican and Central American workers to “modern-day slavery” by holding their identification documents hostage, forcing them to work for little or no pay, subjecting them to dangerous living conditions, and threatening them and their families with deportation and violence. The indictment states that those involved in the operation kidnapped, threatened at gunpoint, and repeatedly raped some of their victims, and that at least two people died because of the working conditions.

. . .

At least three other Kroger suppliers have also been accused of profiting from human trafficking and systemic wage theft since October 2021. One case has led to multiple criminal convictions; another involves more than $200,000 in fines and penalties for wage theft.

In an underreported but hugely important development, the United States is now claiming a vast portion of the ocean floor, twice the size of California. According to the US Department of State (DOS) Media Note released on December 19, the area “is approximately one million square kilometers spread across seven regions” and “holds many resources.”

According to the DOS, it “released the geographic coordinates defining the outer limits of the U.S. continental shelf in areas beyond 200 nautical miles from the coast, known as the extended continental shelf (ECS).” The mapping was also carried out by the US ECS Task Force (an American interagency body comprising14 agencies).

The data collection pertaining to this initiative, supposedly “the largest offshore mapping effort” ever conducted by Washington, actually started in 2003, and involved the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

According to the DOS Executive Summary titled “The Outer Limits of the Extended Continental Shelf of the United States of America” (page 13), the Atlantic superpower has “maritime boundaries” or “unresolved” boundaries pertaining to the so-called “extended continental shelf” (ECS) with the following “neighboring countries”: Mexico, Cuba, the Bahamas (Atlantic region), Japan (Mariana Islands Region), and Russia (Arctic and Bering Sea Region), Canada (in the Arctic and Atlantic regions).

Albeit an explosive announcement as it is, as of today, one will have a hard time even finding news pieces on this development, with the exception of Bloomberg, Telesur, and a few others. It has immense political and geopolitical potential repercussions, though. The US not only got bigger, territory-wise, now, from Washington’s perspective: this is about claiming sovereignty rights in resource-rich areas where one could find the so-called “critical minerals” needed for renewable energy projects, deemed “key national security concerns” by Joe Biden’s administration, as Bloomberg journalist Danielle Bochove writes. According to U.S. Naval War College Professor James Kraska, these American shelf area claims highlight US strategic interests in securing such hard minerals to esure “American economic prosperity and national security.”

The unilateral claims, which can only be described as a bold territorial grab, include also the Bering and the Arctic Sea, where the Russian Federation, as well as other states, also have claims. The Department of State’s announcement comes without significant diplomatic talks with other actors or bilateral agreements, and without filing a claim through any relevant United Nations (UN) structures, for that matter, in a clear defiance of the “rules-based” global order by which Washington allegedly abides. Ironically, the US justifies such wide aspirations by referring to the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which Washington itself has never ratified.

Mead Treadwell, former lieutenant governor of Alaska (who was also the 2006-2010 Chair of the US Arctic Research Commission) urges Washington to ratify it or else issues could arise: “it’s a problem if somebody challenges us who believes they’re got other rights to the same land.” One cannot highlight enough the fact that the enormous territory now claimed by the US extends all the way to the Arctic, an area deemed strategic by Russia - and China also has plans for the region, describing itself as “a state near the North Pole”.

Russian authorities unsurprisingly have criticized the American announcement. Grigory Karasin, chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs, has responded by stating that “we have taken and will continue to take all measures that are necessary for our national interests in this geographical area.” Similarly, Nikolai Kharitonov, head of the State Duma Committee on the Arctic, said that unilaterally expanding boundaries on this area is “unacceptable” and could lead to “increased tension”. In April 2021 I wrote on how NATO’s plans to militarize the Arctic were a source of tension with Moscow - and now this is exponentially boosted by American unilateral territorial expansion.

Much has been written about the space race as a new arena for geopolitical dispute - outer space being understood as the “new sea”. Well, similar considerations may apply to the continental shelf and the deep sea itself, with its unexplored resources and fauna, plus a troublesome lack of nomos (lawlessness) pertaining to mining and, more seriously, to territorial and sovereignty claims, as we have seen.

The issue has more than one angle, this also being yet another dramatic instance of the US overall “encircling” of Russia, which, by the way, also materializes itself in the so-called “NATOization” of Europe: Finnish and Swedish NATO bids, for one thing, result in extending the Atlantic Alliance’s territorial reach as far out as the Russian eastward Arctic flank, thus making Russia the only non-NATO state in the Arctic.

The ongoing Washington proxy attrition war in Ukraine against Moscow, as former US ambassador to Finland Earle Mack has described it, might very well be coming to an end with a soon-to-come land-for-peace deal (after the US elections, presumably) - but, as we can see, there is now a vast universe of potential future conflict unleashed by the latest American ocean floor territorial claims.

I have verified that the Cuban government has sent to the International Criminal Police Organization, better known as Interpol, the Resolution of the Cuban Ministry of the Interior published in the Official Gazette of December 7, 2023. The police entity, of which 196 countries are members, received the “National List of persons and entities that have been subjected to criminal investigations and are wanted by Cuban authorities”.

The Resolution states: “To include in the National List those persons and entities that by virtue of Resolution 1373 of the United Nations Security Council, international law and the domestic legal system, have been subjected to criminal investigations and are wanted by Cuban authorities, due to their involvement in the promotion, planning, organization, financing, support or commission of acts carried out in the national territory or in other countries…”.

Specifying: “The Ministry of the Interior assures the existence of reasonable grounds or bases to include these persons and entities or organizations in the National Terrorist List, with duly documented evidentiary elements, which meet the designation criteria defined in the international and national standards mentioned in this Resolution…”

This includes persons who, since 1999, have committed terrorist acts, inside or outside the country, affecting citizens or properties. It also includes those who have made attempts against the life of the President of the Republic or other State officials. The names of those who have incited, organized or financed actions against peace and citizen security are detailed in the report.

With the exception of one person residing in Belgium, all of them live in the United States, particularly in Florida. Many of them have received, and receive, direct funding from the US State Department, but also from the CIA, which uses various entities and NGOs to deliver it.

In addition to countless interviews and articles on radio, TV and print media, mainly in Florida, many of these individuals have acknowledged their criminal and terrorist activities. Also, to this day, others incite them using the possibilities of penetration and propaganda provided by the internet, and calling themselves “opinion influencers”. The complicity and “blindness” of the U.S. authorities that should be in charge of repressing them, starting with the FBI, has always been astonishing and even hard to believe.

That first group, which they call ‘historical exiles’, many of those who served as mercenaries when an attempt was made to invade Cuba under U.S. orders, in April 1961, through the Bay of Pigs, joined the CIA, which specializes in sabotage and terrorism.

Being the clandestine war carried out by the Reagan-Bush father administration against the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua, since the end of the seventies and during almost all the following decade, many of those who are in that list of “wanted” by the Ministry of the Interior of Cuba participated and mixed with cocaine trafficking, something totally endorsed by that government to finance the dirty war. This is very clear in the Kerry Report of the U.S. Congress: “the people who provided support to the contras were involved in drug trafficking… and elements of the contras themselves knowingly received financial and material assistance from drug traffickers.

In addition to Hernández Calvo and Basulto León, in the field or in Florida: Santiago Álvarez Fernández Magriñá, Pedro Remón Crispín Rodríguez, Antonio Calatayú Rivera, Ramón Saúl Sánchez Rizo, Santiago Álvarez Fernández, Guillermo Novo Sampoll. It is worth mentioning Félix Ismael Rodríguez Mendigutía, who as a CIA officer transferred the order from Washington to assassinate Che Guevara after he was captured. He was one of the main men of the Reagan Administration’s National Security Council in the dirty war against the Sandinistas. Therefore, he was aware of the cocaine trafficking.

All of them are wanted by the Cuban authorities to be brought to justice.

In addition, their participation in terrorist organizations based in Florida is well documented in materials they themselves produced or that they mentioned in interviews with people they trusted. (4)

In that long investigation I carried out in Florida, I also met directly the journalist Ninoska Pérez Castellón, who to this day continues to endorse terrorist actions against Cuba, and therefore is on the list mentioned in the official Cuban Gazette. Since then he was already part of the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF), an organization that Reagan helped to create to support the anti-Sandinista war and the end of the Cuban revolution. At that time Hernández Calvo was the second in command of the Foundation.

The Gazette mentions several organizations to which almost all of the above mentioned belong or belonged. Many of them have been considered terrorists by the FBI itself but remain untouchable. Among them are the Coordinadora de Organizaciones Revolucionarias Unidas, CORU (responsible for the mid-air bombing of a Cubana de Aviación commercial airliner in October 1976); Omega 7 (considered by the FBI as “the most dangerous terrorist organization in the United States”); and Alpha 66. I was invited several times to the training camps of the latter, and witnessed how they prepared terrorist attacks and assaults on coastal towns in Cuba. Alpha 66 has also been considered “terrorist” by the US authorities, however….

With the arrival and development of the internet, the violence against Cuba changed without changing the objective of violently ending the Cuban revolution. As Spanish journalist José Manzaneda said, in 2018 the U.S. State Department created “the Internet Task Force against Cuba” to carry out psychological and propaganda warfare within the Cuban population. The journalist Ignacio Ramonet adds that this war that takes place through social networks has been added to the economic blockade to try to destabilize the revolution from within. The Argentine sociologist Atilo Borón says that from those sites are launched “messages of hate” very well designed, “highly directed and very effective”, mainly towards the youth, so that they feel “indignant and humiliated”, and thus rise up against the government out of resentment. “A highly sophisticated propaganda system, attacking the population at all times,” says former UN rapporteur Alfred de Zayas.

And these messages loaded with permanent hatred are launched from Miami by those mentioned in the Gazette and whose detailed charges are in the hands of Interpol. Messages that incite internal violence, the assassination of State personalities, the destruction of common goods and all kinds of sabotage, such as the electro-energy system or the burning of plantations.

Among them are: Orlando Gutiérrez Boronat, Ana Olema Hernández, William Cabrera González, Michel Naranjo Riverón, Eduardo Arias León. Also on the list are Yamila Betancourt García, Eliecer Ávila, Liudmila Santiesteban Cruz, Manuel Milanés Pizonero, Alain Lambert Sánchez (Cuban Paparazzi), Jorge Ramón Batista Calero (Ultrack) and Alexander Otaola Casal.

The objectives pursued are the same as those of the so-called ‘historical exile’, only the method has changed. Both have one thing in common: they use terrorist methods.

As terrorists and traitors to the Homeland they have served, and have served, the interests of the United States for 65 years against the Cuban revolution. If they were to act in this way against the United States, they would not be spared life imprisonment or the death penalty, as has happened in many cases. Already the seriousness of receiving money from a foreign power, as mercenaries, to attack, destabilize or incite terrorist acts in France would lead them to about 20 years in prison. And Interpol would chase them even under the stones.

Hopefully, in the case of Cuba, the shadow of that tree called Washington, which protects, directs and finances them, will be overcome by Interpol in favor of the fight against international terrorism. As demanded by the United Nations itself.

GAZA/THE HAGUE, Jan 11 (Reuters) - Israel prepared to defend itself on Thursday at the top U.N. court against accusations of genocide in Gaza, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu publicly rebuffed for the first time calls by some right-wing ministers to permanently occupy the enclave.

As Israel's war in Gaza continued to rage, the International Court of Justice in The Hague, also known as the World Court, was to hold hearings on Thursday and Friday in a case brought by South Africa in December claiming Israel's war against Hamas militants in Gaza violates the 1948 Genocide Convention.

Israeli government spokesperson Eylon Levy said on Wednesday: "Tomorrow, the State of Israel will appear before the International Court of Justice to dispel South Africa's absurd blood libel, as Pretoria gives political and legal cover to the Hamas Rapist Regime."

The hearings will deal exclusively with South Africa's request for emergency measures ordering Israel to suspend its military actions in Gaza while the court hears the merits of the case - a process which could take years. Colombia and Brazil expressed their support of South Africa late Wednesday.

Israel launched its offensive after Hamas fighters carried out an Oct. 7 cross-border rampage in which Israel says 1,200 people were killed and 240 abducted.

Since then, Israeli forces have laid much of Gaza to waste, and nearly all its 2.3 million people have been driven from their homes at least once, causing a humanitarian catastrophe. More than 23,000 Palestinians have been killed.

On the eve of the hearings, Netanyahu for the first time publicly stated opposition to calls from right-wing members of his government, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, for Palestinians to leave Gaza voluntarily, making way for Israelis to settle there.

While the stance has been Israel's official policy, Netanyahu's prior comments on permanent occupation of Gaza have been inconsistent and at times opaque.

"I want to make a few points absolutely clear: Israel has no intention of permanently occupying Gaza or displacing its civilian population," Netanyahu said on social media platform X.

Potentially timing his comments ahead of the ICJ hearings, he added: "Israel is fighting Hamas terrorists, not the Palestinian population, and we are doing so in full compliance with international law."

Jordan and Egypt warned on Wednesday against any Israeli reoccupation of the Gaza Strip and appealed for uprooted residents to be allowed to return to their homes as Jordan's King Abdullah and Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi met.

U.N. DEMANDS HOUTHIS STOP SHIP ATTACKS

On the ground in Gaza, the fighting appeared as intense as ever. Israeli strikes in southern and central Gaza intensified on Wednesday despite a pledge by Israel that it would pull out some troops and shift to a more targeted campaign, and pleading from its ally Washington to reduce civilian casualties.

Israel's chief military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari said in a televised briefing late on Wednesday that the military was focusing its operations on Khan Younis and the refugee camps in the centre of the strip.

In the latest sign of the three-month-old war spreading, U.S. and British warships in the Red Sea fended off the biggest attack yet from Yemen's Houthi movement, which says it is acting to support Gaza. Washington and London said they shot down 21 drones and missiles aimed at shipping lanes. No one was hurt.

The U.N. Security Council late Wednesday approved a resolution demanding the Houthis immediately cease the shipping attacks.

Israel had said this week it was planning to begin drawing down troops, at least from the northern part of Gaza, after weeks of U.S. pressure to scale down its operations and shift to what Washington says should be a more targeted campaign.

The World Health Organization cancelled a planned medical aid mission to Gaza due to security concerns, the sixth such cancellation in two weeks.

The Palestinian Red Crescent said four of its staffers were killed when their ambulance was hit by an Israeli strike on the main road near Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip. Two passengers in the ambulance were wounded and later died.

Palestinian health officials at Abu Youssef An-Najar Hospital in Rafah, said four Palestinian children were killed in an Israeli air strike on a house in Rafah.

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, on his fourth trip to the region since the war began, went to Ramallah in the Israeli occupied West Bank on Wednesday and met Palestinian leaders, including Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

The State Department said Blinken expressed support for a Palestinian state and discussed efforts to protect and aid civilians in Gaza. The Palestinian Authority said Abbas told Blinken no Palestinians should be displaced from Gaza or the West Bank.
