Instead of gaining a parliamentary majority large enough to amend the Indian constitution, Modi’s BJP is now slated to lose its absolute majority, and Modi must face forming a coalition to keep his job. There are enough right wing/Hindu Nationalists aligned with Modi to form what should be a stable coalition, but it is still a massive electoral failure when most were expecting a landslide, especially given exit polling numbers. What appeared to be an unchallenged Hindu-Nationalist agenda just weeks ago has come crashing back to reality, hemorrhaging support across the board to a very different view of India’s future.

The NDA (Hindu Nationalist coalition) has faced immense, grassroots resistance to its mandate across the country from a rival coalition, I.N.D.I.A (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance). I.N.D.I.A is broad coalition ranging from Communists to SocDems to Regionalists and even right wing nationalists, all united by a common vision that Modi and his Hindu Nationalist agenda can not be the future of the country. In addition, this strong showing from I.N.D.I.A has been consistent across the board, and coalition members have performed well in both seat sharing and non-seat sharing arrangements. This is vital for long-term resistance to a party like BJP, which employs the strategy of being comparatively well organized, thus allowing it to field vast quantities of mid candidates and still win elections because the opposition to BJP was too divided or even more mid.

My personal thoughts, if you happen to be interested.Though this is great news, Modi and his potential coalition still have won the election. So where do we go from here and what does the future look like? Personally, I believe we may be looking something close to the peak performance of what the I.N.D.I.A coalition is capable of as it is currently structured and in opposition to BJP. Though this election performance was a pleasant surprise given the circumstances, the main reason BJP was able to come to such a powerful position in the first place was its organization, promises regarding a future vision of India (though BJP has not actually accomplished much), and lack of serious inspiring competition. The fact of the matter is that in the long term, to challenge BJP with a leader like Modi, you need a widely popular vision that people believe in and a leader the people believe can guide the country towards this vision. The I.N.D.I.A coalition, as it is currently structured, is purely an anti-NDA alliance. This is not a vision that can result in a stable governing coalition long enough to be effective, and being anti-something is not an effective, inspiring long term unifier (coughcough USA coughcough Democratic Party). In my opinion there are three possible futures of India: One very terrible future would be seeing our present day India continue along its current path where it slides ever deeper into right wing politics and religious extremism while the people of India suffer under intensifying capitalist exploitation. Potentially even more dangerous than the first future would be the balkanization of India along the many ethnic, tribal, religious, and ideological divisions within the country, which could result in absolutely unprecedented human suffering and exploitation. Lastly, there remains the only prosperous potential future of India I can envision, which is one where it is united under a common vision of liberation via socialism.

:brump:

President Biden is expected to sign an executive order on Tuesday allowing him to temporarily seal the U.S. border with Mexico to migrants when crossings surge, a move that would suspend longtime protections for asylum seekers in the United States.

. . .

The order would represent the single most restrictive border policy instituted by Mr. Biden, or any modern Democrat, and echoes a 2018 effort by President Donald J. Trump to block migration that was assailed by Democrats and blocked by federal courts.

Image is of protestors in Mexico City battling police and the barriers they erected, after protestors threw Molotovs at the Israeli embassy.

Much of the preamble has been sourced from Michael Roberts' recent analysis of Mexico.

Claudia Sheinbaum, part of the left-wing and populist Morena party to which AMLO also belongs, is now the first woman to ascend to the Mexican presidency. She is also a climate/energy scientist and was previously mayor of Mexico City. Results indicate that she has won with approximately 60% of the vote, which would be the highest vote percentage in Mexican history.

AMLO's presidency has been generally successful. He campaigned on reducing violence inside Mexico, and while this has technically occurred if measured from 2018, homicides are still considerably higher than in 2010. This is largely due to warring drug cartels, which are more reflective of the United States and its rise in drug addiction and thus imports from Mexico. He also campaigned on reducing corruption, which he also kinda has, and also on reducing income inequality, which he also kinda has. The overall figures don't show massive budges in income inequality, but the minimum wage has risen by 82% and manufacturing wage have risen 27%, and this plus other social programs has lifted 9 million Mexicans out of extreme poverty - a good achievement - but not much further than that, with poverty rates still above the Latin American average. Unemployment is officially at record lows, but much of this job growth has been in the informal sector.

The Mexican economy suffered greatly during the pandemic, and while growth since then has been pretty decent, the economy is still below where it was in 2018. As Mexican capitalists do not pay much in taxes, AMLO's programs have required large budget deficits and borrowing. These capitalists are, of course, not doing many productive investments and thus there is not much productivity growth; productivity has been more-or-less stagnant for two decades. The reason why Mexican capitalists are not investing is because of the major decline in profitability since the 1990s - there is no reason to invest if your money is at major risk of not making a profit. Therefore, they have followed the trend of other national capitalists of investing in real estate and speculation, particularly in American companies.

Since NAFTA/USMCA, Mexico has become increasingly dependent on the United States for a location for its exports, while the US has exploited cheap labour in Mexico. Additionally, with the anti-Chinese sanctions increasingly put in place by the US, Mexico has become one of several conduits for China to redirect its goods so that they can still reach American markets. This has allowed Mexico to have an essentially balanced trade account and keep the peso relatively strong against the dollar.

Mexico's limited fortunes will likely decline from here as the US economy continues to slow. If Trump is elected, he may decree protectionist policies which will hit a US-reliant Mexico quite hard. Additionally, industrial production has recently declined and retail spending is also down. AMLO's presidency was genuinely beneficial for the poorest 50%, but the policies he created failed to really change the fundamentals of the economy. He relied on the private sector rather than the public sector. This is not entirely his fault - if he had tried to do anything terribly transformative, Mexico would have probably been hit hard with consequences by the US and simultaneously faced a domestic revolt by Mexican capitalists. There were and are already threats of outright invasion in response to the limited things AMLO has already done.

In an increasingly multipolar future in which America becomes weaker and weaker, it's very possible that Mexico's reliance on the US will decrease, allowing parties to be more radical without facing the possibility of facing crippling sanctions like Venezuela. However, Mexico's sheer proximity to the US means that they might be among the last countries to break free of American influence, as the US will continue to bitterly resist any attempt to break down the Monroe Doctrine long after it loses Asia, Europe, and Africa. So, it seems likely that Sheinbaum may soon find herself in a situation where she is forced by capitalists to implement fiscal austerity regardless of her intentions, which is equivalent to a declaration of war on the working class. What happens then is anybody's guess.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

The Morena party this afternoon declared Claudia Sheinbaum the winner of the presidential elections by a “two to one” difference over her main rival, the opposition Xóchitl Gálvez. “Sheinbaum has conquered the people of Mexico for her simplicity, tenacity and foolproof discipline,” said the group's president, Mario Delgado, from the campaign center of Sigamos haciendo historia, the coalition that also includes the Green Party and the PT. Earlier, Gálvez asked to take care of the vote during the count: “We are competing against authoritarianism and against power.

They are capable of anything. The fight for Mexico City also seems to be defined in favor of Morena and its candidate, Clara Brugada, according to at least three exit polls that give her a wide lead over the opposition Santiago Taboada. The first official quick count data will be available as of ten o'clock tonight.

update

Claudia Sheinbaum will be Mexico's first female president with 59.5% of the votes. The data thrown out by the quick count of the National Electoral Institute (INE) -which has delayed the announcement on three occasions- gives the official candidate a range that goes from 58.3% to 60.7% of the votes and a lead of approximately 30 points over the aspirant of the opposition alliance, Xóchitl Gálvez, who remains in a range of between 26.6% and 28.6%. Sheinbaum thus takes practically double the votes, fulfilling the most generous predictions. In a distant third place, with between 9.9% and 10.8% of the vote, is Jorge Álvarez Máynez, of Movimiento Ciudadano. Turnout is estimated at between 60 and 61.5% in a poll with a confidence level of 95%.

At 11:58 p.m., the PREP count stands at 31% of the vote counted and shows a turnout of close to 60%. If the results of the quick count are confirmed, Morena's candidate will have surpassed the result the president obtained in 2018 by approximately 2%, pending to see how many millions of votes the percentage translates into.

Colombian president and others celebrates Sheinbaum's victory

The president of Colombia joins some of his Latin American counterparts and congratulates the ruling party's candidate for her more than likely victory. “Mexico elected a progressive as the first female president in its history. It is a triumph for the Mexican people and for its democracy", he said in his account in the social network twitter.

  • Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo to Sheinbaum: “Remember that you have an ally in Guatemala”.

  • Xiomara Castro, president of Honduras, congratulates Sheinbaum: “We agreed to work together for the unity of Latin America and the Caribbean”.

  • Evo Morales also goes ahead and congratulates “Mexico's brand new president-elect” Claudia Sheinbaum

  • Bolivian President Luir Arce celebrates Sheinbaum's arrival to the presidency of Mexico.

  • Nicolás Maduro congratulates Claudia Sheinbaum on her triumph

Morena sweeps the Senate and Chamber of Deputies with 30% of the votes counted, according to INE's first official count.

The president councilor of INE, Guadalupe Taddei, has communicated the first official results with 30% of the votes counted, in which she has advanced that the Morena party has obtained the majority of seats for the Senate of the Republic and for the Chamber of Deputies. The party of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has obtained between 57 and 60 senatorial seats, while for the Chamber of Deputies it has reached up to 236 deputies.

Xóchitl Gálvez acknowledges defeat: “Being a candidate has been the great honor of my life”.

The candidate of the opposition coalition, Xóchitl Gálvez, has come out to publicly acknowledge the defeat of her candidacy, which she had previously acknowledged to the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, by phone, just an hour before. “Being a candidate has been the great honor of my life,” she has said emotionally. “I have always been a democrat, simply committed to respect for the law, I have demonstrated this as a citizen and in my political life. I recognize that the trends do not favor me and that there is no information to suggest that this may change,” she conceded after 1:00 a.m. ”I have always been a democrat, simply committed to respecting the law.

Sheinbaum, after an overwhelming victory: “Our duty is and will always be to look after each and every Mexican, without distinction”.

The already elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has come out after midnight to celebrate her victory from Morena's bunker. “The difference for the Presidency of the Republic is more than 30 points, and even considering the lowest rank, we have won the qualified majority in the Chamber of Deputies and very probably in the Senate,” she has extolled amid applause and cheers.

Sheinbaum has thanked the Mexicans who have participated in today's day and also the opposition candidates, Xóchitl Gálvez and Jorge Álvarez Máynez, who have called her minutes before to recognize their defeat.

But her words have been, above all, for the citizens. “I want to thank this recognition of the people of Mexico to our history, to the results, to the conviction and will, but above all this recognition of the people to our project of nation. I am also grateful because, for the first time in 200 years of the Republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico,” she emphasized, and the public responded enthusiastically with shouts of ‘President, president!’.

“We conceive a plural, diverse and democratic Mexico,” she has continued. “Our duty is and will always be to watch over each and every Mexican, without distinction. Although many Mexicans do not fully agree with our project, we will have to walk in peace and harmony to continue building a fair and more prosperous Mexico", he promised: ”Our Government will be honest, without corruption or impunity. It will be a government with republican austerity, discipline and autonomy of the Bank of Mexico”.

A full Zócalo awaits her next speech, that of the first female president in the history of Mexico, who will also be the first female president in all of North America.

  • President López Obrador celebrates Sheinbaum's victory, “possibly the first female president with the most votes obtained in the history of our country.”

Press Statement by Vice-Minister of National Defence of DPRK

Pyongyang, June 2 (KCNA) -- Kim Kang Il, vice-minister of National Defence of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, made public the following press statement on Sunday:

From the night of May 28 to the dawn of June 2, we scattered 15 tons of wastepaper, favorite toy of the human scum, over the border areas of the ROK and its capital region with more than 3 500 balloons of various sorts.

We made the ROK clans get enough experience of how much unpleasant they feel and how much effort is needed to remove the scattered wastepaper.

We are going to halt wastepaper scattering over the border temporarily as our action was a countermeasure from A to Z.

But, if the ROK clans resume anti-DPRK leaflet scattering, we will correspond to it by intensively scattering wastepaper and rubbish hundred times the amount of scattered leaflets and the number of cases, as we have already warned. -0-

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for a peace conference aimed at resolving the Israel-Palestine conflict and ending “tremendous suffering” in Gaza.

Addressing Arab leaders at the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum in Beijing on Thursday, Xi said Israel’s war on Gaza “should not continue indefinitely” and “justice should not be absent forever”.

His remarks come as Israel deepens its offensive on Gaza, seizing the strategic Philadelphi Corridor on the border between the enclave and Egypt, while engaging in a renewed push into the northern Gaza Strip, Israel’s national security adviser indicated on Wednesday that the war is likely to continue for another seven months.

Xi said China would continue to help with alleviating the humanitarian crisis and post-war rebuilding in Gaza, pledging to provide another 500 million yuan ($69m) in emergency humanitarian assistance.

The country will also donate $3m to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) to support its emergency assistance to Gaza, Xi said.
