Erdogan has won the election with 52% of the vote, with a voter turnout of 85%, winning five more years as president.

Naked Capitalism's diagnosis of Kilicdaroglu's failure is that he had to somehow simultaneously keep pro-KPDP voters on board and also attract voters of nationalist candidates from the first round, and was unable to square that circle.

Erdogan's party has lost seats in the parliament as nationalist parties have outflanked him on refugee issues - and even Kilicdaroglu couldn't seem to move against that tide, as he called for the urgent expulsion of 10 million refugees. The Nationalist Movement Party is now at 10.4% in the parliament, a party with ties to the Grey Wolves. Far right parties got more than 30% of the parliamentary vote. The left was unable to capture enough voters who have suffered in the economic crisis, with inflation rates have sharply risen far above even Europe's, and these voters instead went down the "blame my problems on refugees" path.

As a silver lining to this shitstain, this does at least mean that any hopes by NATO that Turkey will move towards the West more are probably dashed. This isn't to say that Erdogan will scorn the West - far from it, in fact, he let Finland in to NATO and will probably let Sweden in - but the :both-sides: strategy will continue, for better and worse, and if you aren't with the West, then you are against them.

The Tucson City Council is moving forward with the effort to return the ancestral homelands near the base Sentinel Peak to the Tohono O’odham Nation for its continued preservation and reverence.

The city council unanimously approved the motion to transfer land ownership during a study session before their regular council meeting on April 18. The move comes after decades of conversations the City of Tucson has had surrounding what to do with the land.

Tucson Mayor Regina Romero said the piece of land near Sentinel Peak has more than 4,500 years of history and archeology that proves it is an ancestral Hohokam Village.

“This is where our city was born,” Romero said

The initiative to return the land to the Tohono O’odham “without any strings attached” has been led by Romero and Tucson Council Member Lane Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz said over the years, many different efforts and ideas have been introduced to the city on what to do with that land. But, in the end, returning the land was the best and most respectful option.

Santa Cruz said when they started having conversations with the tribe about returning the land, they were skeptical.

“Rightly so,” she added, “they’ve never had a good relationship with the city.”

Santa Cruz said it always seemed as if the city treated the tribe separately, as if they are over there and we are over here, even though many Indigenous people live in the city.

She said it took that ongoing conversation and meeting with tribal members, listening to their stories about the land and what it meant to them. She recalls how tribal members talked about how even if the city chose to acknowledge or not that the land rightfully belongs to the Tohono O’odham, they already know it is theirs.

A couple was reportedly assaulted outside of a liquor store after being confronted by a group of men over their suspected purchase of Bud Light beer, police suspect.

The incident took place on Saturday night in the city of Vaughn, Ontario, a suburb located just north of Toronto in Canada. York Regional Police said in an official statement that a couple was accosted by a group of three men after leaving a liquor store located on Jane Street and Major Mackenzie Drive West, allegedly targeting the 26-year-old male victim's supposed purchase of Bud Light and using various homophobic insults.

When one of the men approached the male victim, the female victim, 27, tried to step between them and keep the situation from escalating, at which point the suspect physically assaulted her. The two other men then got involved and the group began attacking both victims. The group of attackers fled the scene after a bystander intervened. The woman was brought to a nearby hospital for treatment of her injuries, while her partner sustained only minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

The Bud Light beer brand became a flashpoint of controversy amongst conservatives after its parent company, Anheuser-Busch, sent a commemorative Bud Light can to Dylan Mulvaney, a popular transgender social media influencer, to commemorate her 365-day transition to "girlhood". Despite the fact that the so-called "partnership" between the beer brand and Mulvaney only amounted to a short social media video, the reaction swiftly escalated, with conservatives threatening to boycott the brand and destroying cans of the product on video, while others allegedly called in bomb threats to Anheuser-Busch facilities.

"One of the suspects commented on the male victim's choice of alcohol and uttered anti-homosexual derogatory slurs as he approached the victim," the York Regional Police's statement explained.

Police also noted later that the victims had not even purchased Bud Light that night, but rather a different, unspecified product that the attackers mistook for Bud Light.

"But it wasn't. He actually didn't have Bud Light," a spokesperson for the department told Global News. "I guess there were some rainbow colors on the cans and so it was initiated that way...Then upon further determination as to what they purchased, they still weren't happy with that. Let's just put it that way. And the insults continued."

A photo of one of the attackers was released on Twitter in a bid to solicit public help in identifying them. He is described as a 25- to 35-year-old man with a slim build, a buzz-cut hairdo, a tattoo on his jawline, and more tattoos on his hands. At the time of the attack, he was wearing a black Adidas jacket with white stripes on the arms, blue jeans, and a pair of black and white sneakers with orange on the heels.

The second suspect was described as a man with black hair and a full black beard, wearing a red Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal soccer jersey during the attack. A description of the third attacker has not been released, aside from the fact that he is also male. The suspects fled the scene in a vehicle with an Ontario license plate bearing the number, CLHL733.

Newsweek reached out to the York Regional Police via email for comment.

China's Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, has met last weekend with the Pakistani Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, and Afghanistan's Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi (all pictured), discussing security and trade and particularly strengthening co-operation with China and increasing development in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative.

After the United States destroyed the country and killed hundreds of thousands of people and left millions destitute, intentionally destabilizing the region to counter Russia, China, and Iran, Afghanistan's government has been co-operating with China and Russia to try and rebuild. China has already invested billions into Pakistan creating a network of roads, trains, and ports, and the hope is that Afghanistan could receive similar infrastructure investment. And Russia is supplying oil and wheat to the country too.

Additionally, both China and Pakistan have a strong interest in keeping the security situation there manageable, as the country is still the base for several terrorist groups - including the East Turkestan Islamic Movement, the Uyghur militant group - which have committed acts of violence in Pakistan and surrounding countries.

Afghanistan notably hosts approximately $1 trillion worth of minerals. The Taliban have hoped that China will boost investments in the country to help them exploit these resources, as obviously Afghanistan is in dire economic straits.

The apprehension of two men in New York on April 16, 2023, marked the first known US arrests in connection with Chinese overseas police stations …More Chinese police stations are believed to be operating across the US—though, like in other countries, not all their locations are known.

While foreign intelligence agencies conduct extensive espionage operations in other countries … the scale of China’s international programme and the scope of its responsibilities is notable. Run primarily by ethnic Chinese residents, the main concern of these stations appears to be managing the more than 10.5 million Chinese citizens living overseas, and to a lesser extent the 35 to 60 million people in the Chinese diaspora.

China’s first known use of these stations occurred in 2004 with the establishment of the Community and Police Cooperation Center in Johannesburg, following several attacks on Chinese citizens and businesses ... As in other countries, they help Chinese citizens obtain documents, assist in criminal matters, integrate into the country, as well as offer “security, fire, and ambulance teams.” The Chinese government maintains that they are not police stations but instead function as “service centers.”

Two reports, released in September and December 2022 … indicated that there are now more than 100 overseas Chinese stations active in more than 50 countries. Managed by China’s Ministry of Public Security, the stations are operated by police agencies from three Chinese provinces.

The stations have also brought increased Western attention due to their role in convincing Chinese citizens to return to China to face legal charges… Western officials had already criticised China for abusing Interpol’s Red Notice system to arrest and extradite citizens abroad for political purposes, while Operation Fox Hunt has allowed Chinese officials to bypass Interpol and deal directly with its own citizens… with China’s Ministry of Public Security itself stating that 210,000 citizens returned in 2021…Several dual Chinese/US citizens were prevented from leaving China in 2017 and 2018 in an apparent effort to convince their family members living in the US to return to China…The US does not have an extradition treaty with China, while the few European countries that do have taken steps to reduce China’s ability to enforce it in recent months…

FBI director Christopher Wray stated in September 2022 that he was “looking into the legal parameters” of the stations… More than a dozen other countries have also launched probes against the stations in recent months, and other countries have significantly scaled back their cooperation with them.

The growth in the number of Chinese tourists traveling abroad previously incentivized many governments to facilitate cooperation with Chinese police forces, for example, and Chinese police officers were formerly permitted to assist Chinese tourists visiting Italian cities. But this decision was reversed in December 2022, while Croatia is under similar pressure to restrict Chinese tourist assistance police patrols in its cities.

Operation Fox Hunt reveals that not even the U.S. has been able to protect dual citizens or those seeking asylum on its own soil. Though Chinese officials will likely have to act even more discreetly for some of their overseas operations, US officials have yet to locate where all these stations are. And even if they are found, the Chinese government has traditionally cultivated close ties with overseas Chinese communities and has additional avenues to project influence.

In 2019, Chinese police officers began patrolling several Serbian cities alongside Serbian police forces to assist Chinese tourists. Additionally, Chinese police officers have worked out of an office in Cambodia’s national police headquarters since 2019 to manage Chinese citizens suspected of being involved in crime. Chinese police and security forces have also drastically increased their cooperation with their Latin American counterparts over the last decade to “speed up the signing process of treaties concerning judicial assistance in criminal matters, and expand cooperation in such areas as fighting crimes, fugitive repatriation and asset recovery,” according to the Chinese government.

In February 2023, China also unveiled its Global Security Initiative to enhance training and cooperation with developing countries’ security forces. And because Chinese stations do act as legitimate centers aimed to help Chinese citizens abroad, countries with good relations with China and existing and growing Chinese immigrant and worker communities will likely allow further expansion for Chinese overseas stations.

19 nations want to join the BRICS organization, and the current five members of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa if you weren't previously aware) are meeting in Cape Town in early June to discuss enlarging the group. South Africa's ambassador to the group has said "Thirteen countries have formally asked to join and another six have asked informally. We are getting applications to join every day."

Some of the nations that we know about include Argentina, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, and Iran, but it appears there are three more countries in Africa that want to join but haven't been disclosed yet (perhaps it's risky for them to publicly ask as America wouldn't be happy about it).

In other news, Russia has recently carried out one of their most powerful attacks on Ukraine to this date, with bomber planes flying seemingly freely and without interception from Ukrainian air defense and missiles and drones raining down on the country. A couple days before, we saw footage of Russian Lancet drones blowing up Ukrainian S-300 systems on the front line, presumably there to try and counter Russian air power when Ukraine launches its counteroffensive, which some have speculated will begin on May 9th, which is Victory Day in Russia, for the propaganda effect.

The nation’s spy chief, a longtime college president and top women in finance. The circle of people who associated with Jeffrey Epstein years after he was a convicted sex offender is wider than previously reported, according to a trove of documents that include his schedules.

William Burns, director of the Central Intelligence Agency since 2021, had three meetings scheduled with Epstein in 2014, when he was deputy secretary of state, the documents show. They first met in Washington and then Mr. Burns visited Epstein’s townhouse in Manhattan.

Kathryn Ruemmler, a White House counsel under President Barack Obama, had dozens of meetings with Epstein in the years after her White House service and before she became a top lawyer at Goldman Sachs Group Inc. in 2020. He also planned for her to join a 2015 trip to Paris and a 2017 visit to Epstein’s private island in the Caribbean. Leon Botstein, the president of Bard College, invited Epstein, who brought a group of young female guests, to the campus. Noam Chomsky, a professor, author and political activist, was scheduled to fly with Epstein to have dinner at Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse in 2015.

None of their names appear in Epstein’s now-public “black book” of contacts or in the public flight logs of passengers who traveled on his private jet. The documents show that Epstein arranged multiple meetings with each of them after he had served jail time in 2008 for a sex crime involving a teenage girl and was registered as a sex offender. The documents, which include thousands of pages of emails and schedules from 2013 to 2017, haven’t been previously reported.

The documents don’t reveal the purpose of most of the meetings. The Wall Street Journal couldn’t verify whether every scheduled meeting took place. Most of those people told the Journal they visited Epstein for reasons related to his wealth and connections. Several said they thought he had served his time and had rehabilitated himself. Mr. Botstein said he was trying to get Epstein to donate to his school. Mr. Chomsky said he and Epstein discussed political and academic topics.

In comments cited in court filings late Wednesday night, Jack Teixeira, a 21-year-old member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, spoke of wanting to “kill a [expletive] ton of people” because it would be “culling the weak minded,” and discussed wanting to make a minivan into an “assassination van.”

In September 2019, Jonathan Teixeira joined the 102nd Intelligence Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard as a Cyber Transport Systems journeyman. He was stationed at Otis Air National Guard Base in Cape Cod. In July 2022, he was promoted to airman first class and held a Top Secret security clearance. Despite his low rank, he had access to classified information, given Teixeira’s responsibility for maintaining Top Secret computer networks.

In early April 2023, Teixeira was alleged to have repeatedly shared classified information in a chat group called "Thug Shaker Central" on Discord. Reports suggest that he was the chatroom administrator and that there were between two dozen and fifty members. One member allegedly posted dozens of pictures of classified documents on another Discord server on February 28, 2023. After the documents appeared on Russian-language Telegram channels, The New York Times reported the leak. On April 21, The New York Times reported that an account with similar characteristics as Teixeira's online profile had shared summaries of classified information and likely shared photographs of documents with a Discord chat group of about 600 members from about February 2022 until about March 2023.

On April 13, 2023, the FBI arrested Teixeira at his mother's residence in Dighton. The next day, he was charged with two offenses: violating the Espionage Act of 1917 by retaining and transmitting national defense information without authorization and unauthorized removal and retention of classified information. The first charge carries a maximum sentence of ten years, and the second charge carries a maximum sentence of five years. Teixeira is represented by counsel from the federal public defender's office, and his detention hearing is scheduled tomorrow (April 27). He has not entered a plea yet.

On Monday (10 April), lawmaker Nguyễn Anh Trí put forward a proposal to the Standing Committee of the National Assembly to create the new law.

Trí said the law would show that Vietnam values protecting vulnerable communities and “leaving no one behind in its policies”, Việt Nam News reported.

The proposed law would allow people the right to change gender identity, request a different gender identity to the one assigned at birth and the right to choose a medical intervention method for gender-reaffirming surgery.

In a feedback document the day before presenting the proposal, Trí said the government had outlined its support for the proposed legislation.

The chairman of the national assembly’s legal committee, Hoàng Thanh Tùng, said that the country’s legislative body appreciated the efforts of deputies in preparing the proposal.

Tùng added that the national assembly recognises the necessity of promulgating the law, but said that his committee required more clarity on the real-life basis for the creation and enactment of the legislation.

Some scope of the law overlaps with the 2015 Gender Affirmation Law that the government is continuing to study, with Tùng asking lawmakers to continue to look at the issue.

In 2015, Vietnam’s legislature passed the Law on Marriage and Family which removed a ban on same-sex marriage.

That same year, the country passed a proposed law enshrining rights for trans people, by allowing those who have had reaffirming surgery to register under their new gender.

However, in order for the Gender Affirmation Law to be enforced, the bill needed to be discussed by the national assembly, meaning it hasn’t come into effect, so the trans community has no protection from discrimination.

But LGBTQ+ rights are slowly being advanced and, in August, the country’s health ministry declared in an official document, that being LGBTQ+ is “entirely not an illness” and “cannot be ‘cured’, nor need[s] to be ‘cured’ and cannot be converted in any way”.

Macron (and Ursula von der Leyen, though nobody seems to care about her) went to Beijing, with the initially stated aim of trying to convince Xi Jinping to bring Russia to its senses. Obviously, the Chinese were entirely uninterested in this given that they had just formed an alliance in all but name with the Russians, and the two countries are now united in both long term economic deals, and also in their opposition to the Western bloc.

Macron's visit has, unexpectedly for me, been an interesting one. It sometimes feels like every media source I see has an entirely new outlook on what happened. But one thing is for certain: the western media appears to be quite annoyed by Macron, because he supposedly went to tell Xi off for being naughty, and then made statements while there warning that Europe must not become America's followers, thus implying he's pursuing an independent foreign policy.

But at the end of the day, all of these words are just... well, words. We shall see if Europe, or at least western Europe, will actually try and strike a balance or if they will continue to be vassals of the US. I'm certainly not holding my breath.

Hospital: Treatment, discharge of woman who died appropriate <— that’s the actual headline, WTF AP

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — A woman who died after being discharged from a Tennessee hospital and forced to leave despite her pleas for more help received appropriate medical treatment, the hospital said, but changes were being made to security procedures.

The findings from an internal investigation by Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville over its treatment of 60-year-old Lisa Edwards were released Tuesday, news outlets reported.

Security officers at the hospital called police Feb. 5 saying that Edwards had been evaluated and discharged, but was refusing to leave. Four responding police officers were investigated for repeatedly ignoring her pleas for help as they accused her of faking illness.

The Knox County District Attorney’s office said it would not press criminal charges against the officers after an autopsy determined that Edwards died of a stroke and that “at no time did law enforcement interaction cause or contribute to Ms. Edwards’ death.”

A video released by police showed officers struggle for about 25 minutes to move Edwards into a police van and finally a cruiser. Edwards repeatedly asks for help but is rebuffed by officers and hospital security guards who become frustrated with her inability to step up into the van and tell her she is faking her incapacity.

After she is placed in a police cruiser, video shows Edwards trying to pull herself upright repeatedly, but eventually she slumps over out of sight. Several minutes later, one of the officers performs a traffic stop on another vehicle while Edwards remains in the backseat. When he opens the rear door, Edwards is unresponsive. He calls dispatch for an ambulance, telling them, “I don’t know if she’s faking it or what, but she’s not answering me.”

Edwards was pronounced dead at the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center the following day.

The hospital said it conducted a thorough internal investigation of Edwards’ care and found that her “medical treatment and hospital discharge were clinically appropriate.”

The hospital also reviewed security procedures and said changes were being made. Several security officers who were working at the facility when Edwards was removed are no longer employed, the hospital said.

“In addition, we are implementing empathy training for security officers serving on behalf of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and Covenant Health,” the statement said.

The war in Yemen looks like it’s coming to an end. U.S. media reported yesterday that a cease fire extending through 2023 had been agreed to, but those reports also included Houthi denials. But today Al Mayadeen, a generally pro-Houthi Lebanese news outlet, is reporting optimism from the Houthi side that the deal is real and the war is winding down.

What’s startling here is the apparent role of China in brokering a rapprochement between Iran and Saudi that made this possible. The Saudis seem like they are fully capitulating to the (quite reasonable) Houthi demands, which include opening the major port to allow critical supplies into the country, allowing flights, and allowing the government to have access to its currency to pay its workers and stabilize the economy. Reasonable stuff.

With the Saudis no longer backing militants in the war, those rump factions won’t have much capacity left to fight, though there will still probably be some clashes before it’s all said and done. The way the war is ending also underscores just how illegitimate the “government” of Yemen has been the last several years. In reality, it’s a group of exiles living in hotels in Riyadh, fully propped up by and under the thumb of Saudi Arabia. For a while, Saudi Arabia was referring to it in official documents as “The Legitimate Government of Yemen,” though it did no actual governing, and had no legitimacy outside its hotel.

It’s now led by the “Presidential Leadership Council,” and look at how the news was delivered to the “legitimate government of Yemen,” according to Al Mayadeen: “The sources stated that Riyadh informed the Presidential Leadership Council of its decision to end the war and conclude the Yemeni file permanently.”

Erik Sperling, executive director of Just Foreign Policy, which has been working for an end to the war in Yemen for years, told me that the Saudi move suggests the country is looking out for its own interests rather than continuing the war for the benefit of U.S. interests in the region. "The Saudi concessions — including a potential lifting of the blockade and exit from the war — demonstrate that their priority is to protect Saudi territory from attack and focus on economic development at home,” he said. “This diverges from the approach preferred by many Washington foreign policy elites who continued to hope that the Saudi war and blockade could force the Houthis to make concessions and cede more power to the US-backed Yemeni 'government.' While the Houthis are a deeply flawed movement, it is both immoral and ineffective to try to counter them by pushing tens of millions of Yemenis to the brink of starvation. The Saudis are smart to cut their losses, end their complicity in this human rights nightmare, and refocus their attention to their own economic development."

Assad has returned with full force to the regional diplomatic scene. The earthquake, followed by the Iran-Saudi peace deal, has shook the Middle East.

Ever since the outbreak of the Syrian Civil War, Saudi Arabia has closed its embassy in Damascus, but now the two countries are discussing the restoration of diplomatic ties. Various Gulf States have been in talks with Syrian officials and have visited the country, such as Jordan's foreign minister. Assad has been to Oman to meet with their leader. And Assad has recently gone to Moscow to meet Putin, agreeing that Russia is fighting "old Nazis" and "neo-Nazis" in Ukraine (Syria is one of the few countries, alongside Belarus and the DPRK for example, that are unabashedly pro-Russian and always votes alongside them in the UN).

All of this poses a profound problem for America in the region, as they're slowly being squeezed out. Two roads lay before them - escalation, or retreat. While a dignified retreat might be the pertinent thing to do, the Biden administration seems desperate to cause and escalate conflicts everywhere they can. Their base in Syria was attacked on March 23rd, prompting retaliation strikes against Syria. And Russia looks like it's ready for America's next moves, as Russian aircraft frequently fly over the US military base at At Tanf.
