The macOS 14 Sonoma betas and release candidate contain a bug that causes the firewall to not filter traffic correctly. As a result, our app does not work.

During the macOS 14 Sonoma beta period Apple introduced a bug in the macOS firewall, packet filter (PF). This bug prevents our app from working, and can result in leaks when some settings (e.g. local network sharing) are enabled. We cannot guarantee functionality or security for users on macOS 14, we have investigated this issue after the 6th beta was released and reported the bug to Apple. Unfortunately the bug is still present in later macOS 14 betas and the release candidate.

We have evaluated whether we can patch our VPN app in such a way that it works and keeps users secure in macOS 14. But unfortunately there is no good solution, as far as we can tell. We believe the firewall bugs must be fixed by Apple.

The bug affects much more than just the Mullvad VPN app. Firewall rules do not get applied properly to network traffic, and traffic that is not supposed to be allowed is allowed. We deem this to be a critical flaw in the firewall, anyone relying on PF filtering, or apps using it in the background on their macOS devices should be cautious about upgrading to macOS 14.

Our recommendations

MacOS 14 Sonoma is scheduled to be released on the 26th of September, if the bug is still present we recommend our users to remain on macOS 13 Ventura until it is fixed.

Technical details

The following steps can be taken on macOS 14 to reproduce the issue. Warning: This will clear out any firewall rules you might have loaded in PF.

In a terminal, create a virtual logging interface and start watching it for traffic matching the rules you will add later:

sudo ifconfig pflog1 create
sudo tcpdump -nnn -e -ttt -i pflog1

Write the following firewall rules to a file named pfrules:

pass quick log (all, to pflog1) inet from any to 127.0.0.1
block drop quick log (all, to pflog1)

In another terminal, enable PF and load the rules:

sudo pfctl -e
sudo pfctl -f pfrules

Ping the mullvad.net webserver:

ping 45.83.223.209

Expected results

• Ping is blocked, since it does not match the only pass rule’s requirements
• The traffic is logged to pflog1. More specifically we expect it to be logged as matching the block rule

Actual results

• Ping is allowed out on the internet, and the response comes back
• No traffic is being logged to pflog1

Cleaning up after the experiment

Disable the firewall and clear all rules.

sudo pfctl -d
sudo pfctl -f /etc/pf.conf

Ever since MV disabled port forwarding is there anyway to SSH, host a nextcloud instance, etc. while using mullvad? On my computers I can at least use local network sharing and another VPN/VLAN like zerotier or hamachi but my phone only supports 1 active vpn connection at a time, meaning I either get privacy OR get to access my data, but not both.

You know the long debate on whether Tor over VPN is better or worse than Tor alone, in terms of privacy/anonymity. Reviewing much of the debate, including those in r/mullvadvpn, i could not get a definitive answer for the issue.

Once again I would like to ask privacy-conscious Mullvad people, does Tor over "Mullvad" VPN provide additional anonymity benefit over Tor alone; or additional privacy benefit over Mullvad VPN alone? Or is the opposite true: it actually harms? Considering many opinions for and against on the topic, I believe contributing with reasons will be more helpful.

As for my primary concern about Tor over VPN, making network stuff too complicated may cause unexpected interference resulting in leaks.

i live in a weird region where i kind of have to use a vpn to play nintendo games, and the free ones always have the problem of being like, shadowbanned or something? it just doesnt matchmake you with anyone, even tho most features seem to work. now i've heard great things about mullvad, and i wanted a privacy-focused vpn for a while now, so i'm hoping theres other people here who tried matchmaking in splatoon 3 specifically, or other NSO games, and had any luck with it.

it would be also great to hear people's thoughts on why the problem exists in the first place? since it makes little sense to me.

I've been using us-sjc-wg-301 successfully for several months, but for days now I've been unable to connect to us-sjc-wg-301. 302 and 303 work just fine, but I simply cannot connect to 301.

I generally use the Wireguard app w/ generated Wireguard config files, but since having this issue I've tried the Mullvad app and even generated a new config from scratch, no dice. Very puzzling.

I even just tested it on my iPhone with wifi off to make sure there wasn't a router/network issue causing it, but it still won't connect via my cell carrier's LTE.

I'm using Mullvad on android and when it's on almost any app I open (x/twitter, youtube, reddit, some games, etc) don't work unless I turn off Mullvad or allow them through the VPN with split tunneling. however trying to open a webpage, including the sites for the apps I mentioned, it works fine.

I've been using Mullvad for a while but this only started happening today. I thought it might be a DNS issue but the problem persists even after changing the DNS settings in either the Mullvad app or my phone's connection settings. Changing the connection region/country doesn't work even if it's set somewhere in another continent. Connecting to another Wi-Fi network (but same ISP I think) does not work, however using mobile data does work.

One idea I have is that my ISP may have started blocking usage of MullvadVPN since they have been blocking the Mullvad website for at least a year however in the app it says it's connected. However I cannot swap ISP as where I live I'm not allowed to setup my own Wi-Fi or router or anything.

If it helps at all my phone is a Galaxy Z Flip 4 and I live in central Canada.

I will be traveling to China in a few weeks and I wanted to use Mullvad as my VPN of choice if possible. From the limited research I have done, it seems that basically most to all of the "major VPN services" no longer work in China and the ones that are "reliable" or work are services that use some form of v2ray implementation, sometimes with shadowsocks. I saw that Mullvad also has the option to use/do this. Does anyone use this and does it currently work in China to access the internet as usual?

This is all hypothetical but let say someone has a server that runs transmission-daemon and uses a mullvad wireguard interface to conduct that torrent trafiic. Let's say you've been a busy pirate, and then all of a sudden you can get any traffic through that tunnel. You move the config file to your laptop and using that same config you are able to connect the wg tunnel, but you still can't get any data through it. Then on the mullvad site you make a new wg config and set that up on the server and everything works again. Is it possible that mullvad would shut down a wireguard tunnel due to DCMA complaints? It's wouldn't be that big of a deal to make a new connection and set it up on my server. Like I said it's all hypothetical.

Has anyone ever gotten an explanation from Mullvad as to why they don't accept prepaid CC's? I mean if they're promoting anonymity you'd think they would support prepaid CC's. Kind of defeats the point if you have to pay for your account by revealing who you are to them and hope they're actually not keeping logs. After all, how can you really know who they are and what they're up to?

I recently purchased Mullvad VPN for use at home with torrenting but downloaded on my phone as well to use in my school. When I attempt to turn it on, my wifi shuts off and leaves me using LTE as it tries to connect. I've seen a bunch of posts about the same problem yet all of their solutions haven't been working for me. Forgive me if I'm doing something wrong, I am a little bit of a newbie.

Basically, whenever I am connected to Mullvad, regardless of the server I am connected to, my speeds consistently drop to 0 for a few moments when bandwidth gets higher than ~150mbps, then goes back up for a bit. It's most likely my router, as it happens to other devices as well. I've tried disabling all sorts of protections/firewalls on the router as well to no avail. It's not the cable, and the computer is connected to a managed switch. I've also messed with the switch, nothing changed.

Any ideas? Some magic router setting maybe?

What the title says.

I have Mullvad set up as a WireGuard client on my router (Asus VPNFusion, would highly recommend it works great and I could even upload config files from my phone), so all the traffic on my wifi goes through it my Mullvad. PN. It works on my phone, steam deck, etc.

However, it does not work on my Windows 11 desktop. I suspect there’s something in the Windows Firewall/Defender settings or network adapter settings that I need to change, but I can’t figure it out. Anyone know a fix for this?

I have attempted deleting/re-adding WAN network adapters in Device Manager, resetting network settings, etc.

I’m not against running the Mullvad app on my PC, I just want it to work this way :/

How do you get around this? Whenever using the vpn google doesn't allow to usage due to unusual traffic. Constant captchas. I don't see the point of the vpn if it creates hassle.
