Memmy - An iOS client for Lemmy

Hey all!

It may have seemed to be a slow week, but I have been toiling rewriting a significant portion of the codebase while staring at graphs so that we can better implement new features. Currently, the state management was a bit too spread out, so I have taken the time to centralize that. This is going to make things like mod tools a cinch to integrate, and I plan to do that this coming week (seriously).

These changes should also provide some pretty good performance enhancements. To be sure, this is not a complete effort yet, however I have overhauled the two biggest things: feeds and posts/comments. These are the two biggest performance bottlenecks, and I think I’ve gotten about 80% of the way there in improving the performance there. Still more work to do though!

Additionally, we should see another significant performance boost in the next portion of the rewrite, which will remove off the current UI library that we use and replace it with a much better performing library. That is a process that will happen over time.

The great news is that now, we should be able to iterate at a higher speed with these changes, and we should be rolling out some big changes here in the next few days!

For now, there are a few changes - and things that should be fixed because of this rewrite

• I keep saying this, but I have a feeling that this should resolve some NSFW issues
• I also keep saying this, but I am pretty certain that this should fix the issues with language ID issues. At least for posts, comments should be fixed in a day or so.
• The profile screen has been reworked
• Much better (but still lacking, and this will improve further in the coming days) performance with the traverse

As this is a rewrite of a lot of state things, there is a chance that some things might have broken. However, I have done a good bit of testing here and think things are alright. If you see anything funky, please do let us know!

We do plan (and should be able to do so more easily now) have some tab bar options that will allow you to customize the functions there. For example, you will be able to visit the traverse tab from a button on the tab bar if you wish to swap it out with another one.

Like I said, this coming week will be more feature-full rather than behind the scenes work. Thanks for hanging in there while we get this stuff sorted out!

After the update this week, I could no longer log into the instance I first logged to, using Memmy.

Every attempt was met with Unknown Error-Code Type…Network Request Failed, no feed and no joy.

In frustration I deleted the app and reinstalled. Same error. So I created an entirely new account, with different server instance and user deets, and I can once again access the fediverse.

Did my first instance shuffle from this mortal coil or what?

Any tips or tricks, greatly appreciated.

I don't know if I'm stupid, but when there are multiple images in a post, then I can't go to the next image.

Is it a but or am I dumb?

I just checked the github page and it seems this bug is low priority:

Memmy does sometimes not let you post or comment due to a weird bug that thinks you‘re posting in the wrong language.

I just want to point out that I‘ve had this bug twice so far and others (maybe many) will have it too which severely hinders the growth of lemmy at this critical time.

If someone reads this who has any clout, stuff like this is what can trip a promising platform like this. Exponential growth and all.

as the title says if the URL is to a direct link to an image. it is not blurred if post is marked as NSFW. does it both in app store and testflight.

edit:though lemmy.ml seems to be doing it properly (so i have removed the NSFW tag and linked image on this post). it appears it might be instance specific and maybe memmy trusts lemmy-ui a bit much. also i have noticed that a NSFW post will display properly then blur on load in a feed if visable on lemmy.ml

I admit I have a bad habit of doom scrolling. One feature I used in Apollo to address this was the “next page” setting - rather than scroll endlessly, pages were limited to X number of posts, then I had to hit a button to load more content. It was helpful to me, at least… any thoughts on adding something similar here?

Sorry if this has been asked already. I also don’t know how to search a specific community yet.

Let’s say I’m not very tech-savvy so no idea how to ask for help or what is going on. Since the app got a new look I can’t reply to any posts in the communities I’m subscribed to. A pop up in red appears on the screen and my reply is not submitted. I know this probably sounds unbelievable lame but the pop up shows so high up on the screen that it’s impossible to read the text! What is going on?

Apologies if this has already been addressed or is already in the pipeline. What I’m requesting is something like the “share as image” feature that Apollo had.

It would export an image which (based on context cues and toggle-able switches) could have not only the image or text from the post, but also the title and specific comments drilled upwards to a user-selectable number of parents.

This was especially helpful in subreddits like FakeHistoryPorn, TIL, MovieDetails, or any other one where the post title and comments are as important to the post as the image, and I keep looking for it on Memmy thanks to muscle memory. It’s the one final QoL feature that I’m still missing from my move from Reddit and Apollo.

Maybe I’m an idiot, but I can’t figure it out. Was pretty intuitive in the last version

I love this app so far. Couple of things that would be nice.

1. Can I have the option to slightly reduce the thumbnail in the compact view, potentially by %? I like a real tight layout haha.

2. can I have the option to change the colour of the.. shit I don’t even know what it’s called. The equivalent of the subreddit?

3. Can I have the option to filter out NSFW with a toggle on a certain account.

Can’t seem to email debug log. Or it does nothing.

But setting the follow system theme is super buggy and lags the entire app down. It seems to cache/queue up chnages from light to dark and will Lag out going back and forth.

I think this would help quickly filter communities while browsing all.

From what I can tell, there’s only one main current account, and I can’t find any way to actually switch between my other two accounts?

This one is definitely my favorite so far. Appreciate the work put into this!

I was just wondering, and not sure if you have already mentioned it, but what is your plan for a funding model for the app in the long term?

Some kind of one-off payment maybe, or a subsrciption model?

After all the crap at Reddit with Christian being essentially priced out of making an affordable app by spez, it’l be interesting to see how you plan to go forwards financially here. I ask this knowing that there will be ongoing costs your side and I would willing to help fund that.

On a side note, I guess Memmy users are signing up through many different instances. Apart from whatever your funding model is for the app, would it be possible to also add a payment option for those who want to donate to whichever instance they use? IMO that’d be a pretty useful extra feature.

Hey guys, is there a way to change the language within the app back to english? After the update the app is German (my system language) but I would like to change it back to English 😇

I’m wondering if the blocked communities should be working. I’ve blocked a few and they keep showing up in my feed. Has anyone else seen this?

I would love to be able to make the thumbnails smaller and an option to get rid of the voting buttons in the Home Screen.

Not sure if this has come up, but one UI element I liked from Apollo and “the-one-that-shall-not-be-named” was the floating button in a thread that would take you to the next top level comment in that thread. Not sure what this feature is called, but so far can’t find it in any Lenny/Kbin client. Is this something that is in Memmy’s pipeline?

I tried to make a post to casualconversation@lemmy.world, but received an error message about not being able to post in this language to this community. Is there a setting I need to change in the app for language? I can’t seem to find one.

I left a comment in the post and when I try to go into it, it says “couldnt_find_post”

I’m new to lemmy like everyone else, the devs to this app have been flippin amazing, bug fixes instantly sorted, very responsive, and make this experience soooo good, if you make a pro version with features like Face ID to unlock the app, and other features too, I would more than happily pay for it..
