I build a new, 2cm tall, gaming keyboard using cheap low profile switches and 3d printing the rest. All files and mores pictures can be found here

Common core functionality:

  • Hot-swap 4x12 Ortho
  • RP2040, 4 MB flash
  • USB type C
  • Full per key RGB
  • Optional encoders on all four corners
  • Optional 1x2u & 2x2u layout

Option 1:

  • North-facing keys
  • Fits existing JJ40/BM40 cases

Option 2:

  • South-facing keys
  • Needs dedicated case design (possibly USB daughterboard)

Option 3:

  • South-facing keys, compromise on the two top row keys by the USB connector.
  • Fits existing JJ40/BM40 cases

I provided Solidworks files if anyone wants to modify.

This is a 7.5 degree tent. I also provide .STLs for 10 & 15 degrees.

Keycap suggestion (lemmy.world)

I've always had black or grey keyboards, but decided to change it up with this sky blue zoom tkl.

I think it's gorgeous, but I'm having a hard time visualizing what keycsps might look good on it; Blue is a bit harder to match than black or grey.

I currently have more or less the caps they had in the product page, but they're Cherry profile and I'm looking for some higher quality OEM PBT.

Anyone have any ideas? I know it's mostly personal preference

New(er) to the trend, and I was just curious if there were any particular uses for when one key profile is better ergonomically/functionally/etc or if it's always more just an aesthetic/preference reason

I have an OG Model F (pre IBM XT, but the same standard) and used to have a Pro Micro-based Soarer's converter before it died on me.

I'm looking for a replacement that can be both wired (either USB, PS/2, or AT) and wireless (either Bluetooth or via dongle). Soarer-style macros would be a nice-to-have, especially for the missing F11, F12, and Meta keys.

Does anything like that exist?

I love my front-facing keycaps. But hate the shine-between that I get with both the brighter black-ink(esc) and oil kings.

  • MGA Standard
  • Copper Plate
  • Durock L5 lubed and filmed
  • CRP Tulip with 21KB accents
  • Owl Stabs

This is my first mechanical. I ordered Gateron pro yellows pre installed. Everything is supposed to be lightly lubed. Managed to get it for 121 CAD + taxes and free shipping. I think I got a substantially better deal than if I went with my original plan of buying a Keychron V1.

I can't describe the feel too much because it's my only mechanical ever but it's very good. I don't think it feels flawless, but it's good. Left shift and space have foam or rubber beneath making them thud more than the other keys and the board itself is heavy and already dampened. They gave a cap and switch puller as well as 3 switches and a black space bar cap.

I'd really like to get a first mechanical keyboard, but they seem too expensive to just experiment with until I find what works for me. What's a good, cheap, middle-of-the-road starter keyboard for a noob?

This is very quickly becoming a very expensive hobby...

Bottom is my first, a GMMK Pro with Gateron ink black V2 switches. And just yesterday I received the Keychron Q5 Pro with Keychron's own banana switches that I'll be using at work

Don't know why there aren't more Nuphys on here. Chose this low profile 96% as daily driver due to its portability for when I go into the office. Nuphy and Gateron's new "Wisteria" switches. I love it so far! I bought both this one (Nuphy air96) and Keychron K5 Pro and ended selling the keychron. Just preferred the thonkiness of the air96. Would appreciate keycap suggestions!

I just got a Keychron K2 Pro and I'm very much enjoying it. The OSA profile keys with the brown switches are a massive improvement over the cheapo 2nd-hand membrane keyboard with the flat keys I was using before.

Even though I absolutely love the brown switches it came with, I'm excited to hot swap them out to try different switches, and see what they're like.

I'm intrigued by the Cherry Clears:

Or maybe the Kailh Polia switches:

Any other tactile switch recommendations?

Keychron K4v2, put some LSA Keychron Developer caps on it. Required a little modification to shave down the stabs but I like the look, now I just need to fix the sound since the reduced mass of the cap leaves some snap back ping on larger keys.

Just received last night, here is my Keychron Q6 Pro in White with Glorious Pandas, GPBT Arctic White keycaps, and a white Marshall Amp knob.

Still trying to get usevia to work since there does not seem to be a json for the Q6 Pro. The regular Q6 json is throwing an error: "Object: should NOT have additional properties". Any thoughts?

Looking for something that has qmk/vial support, hot swap, and in the price range of my first and only keyboard that was the kbd67v3. I am leaning towards wanting to try 60% unless 65% has better affordable options.

Already got cherry mx caps, and switches I like, so just need everything else.

First keyboard build; everything was going reasonably fine until I had assembled the whole thing and noticed the backspace key was not sitting right. See picture for culprit. (Not pictured: the idiot who didn’t set the stabilizer correctly) Can I reseat the stabilizer without (further) tearing this thing down to the studs? Help!

I can't seem to find any. If some do exist, please link them. I prefer low profile keyboards, so it would feel odd to have a full profile numpad next to my TKL whenever I need to use it.

Here are all my keebs.

From oldest to newest:

  • TM680 - Case foam, tape mod, wheel weights, foam in all the places. MMD Holy Panda Switches and Pudding keycaps - this was the first custom keyboard I got, its had all the switches and keycaps you can see in this picture are some point in time, I have used this for 2 years up until only recently.

  • Teater68 - got this as something to experiment with and also somewhere put the Gayeron Milky Yellow switches when I upgraded to the Gazzew Boba switches, this was used as a WFH keyboard. - this has had all the mods plus a internal battery with USB C charging added. Will have the Gateron Milky Yellows put back on and then I will pick up some white keycaps just to finish this off again.

  • Feker JJK21 - I missed the numpad so I picked this up, it has the tape mod and that's it. It started its life out as white as it was £20 cheaper than the black one, so I spray painted it black to match the TM680 and now the Monsgeek M1. Its got Holy Tom V2 switches and Gentleman XDA V2 keycaps.

  • Monsgeek M1 - I wanted something fancy and made of metal, so I got this, its had the tape mod done and that's it. Its got Gazzew Boba U4T switches (68g springs) and Gentleman XDA V2 keycaps.

  • GMK67 - impulse buy as it was £26 delivered. It will be getting MMD Princess Tactile switches when they arrive, it currently has Gateron Milky Yellow switches and Honey Milk XDA keycaps.

  • Switch tester has a bunch of all different switches, looks cool.

Thanks for reading.

Are you (like me) just a little bit extra? Do you often make things WAY harder than they need to be? Have I got the keeb mod for you!

After applying each layer of tape to your pcb go ahead and throw the whole unit in a vacuum seal bag for MAXIMUM tape to board contact!

Will it make any noticeable difference? Probably not. Does it look awesome? Uh-huh! Does it scratch your itch of needing to feel different and sightly superior than the masses? Abso-fricken-lutely.
