Welcome to Maple Music, a community on the Lemmy.ca instance focused on bringing attention to Canadian music and musicians!

Like everything else, Canada has a rich music culture, spanning from the traditional music of the First Nations to a unique spot in the Punjabi music scene, a rich variety of folk performers to the big names in pop, and established underground music cultures such as the Edmonton hiphop and rap scene to the metal scene in the Atlantic provinces.

This community allows for postings of Canadian music news, covering anything from the local scene to world-renowned names such as Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendes, and Celine Dion. It also allows for sharing Canadian musicians you wish to give a spotlight to, individual songs and albums by Canadian artists you enjoy, and even a bit of Canadian music history seeing how poorly documented some Canadian music history can be at times.

--

Please post albums using album.link and songs using songs.link! This allows people to listen to the song on whichever platform they prefer, assuming that it is available there. This is not strictly required, but is the most ideal way to share music.

Community Rules and Guidelines:

  1. Follow Site-wide rules: We are all guests in lemmy.ca's house. The house has rules that we must follow. We are polite guests.

  2. Formatting: Song and Album posts should follow the this format: "Musician - Title [Genre] (Year) (track length)". Genre, Year, and track length are not required but encouraged. Posts regarding news articles must include the article title in the post's title. Otherwise, make titles relevant to what you are trying to talk about.

  3. On Topic Posts only: All posts must be related to the Canadian music scene to some extent. For example: News about Taylor Swift will be removed. News about Taylor Swift having a Canadian tour will be kept.

  4. French & English Equal: French and English content, posts, and comments are equally welcomed and encouraged.

  5. Self-Made Music Welcomed: Are you Canadian and artistically talented? Feel free to post it here! Please do limit excessive self promotion however.

The No Rules:

  1. No shaming of music tastes: Mumble rap is not for everyone, and neither is country or dubstep. Avoid all "real music" type comments. Refrain from downvoting music that is not your taste, everyone should feel welcome regardless of the genre you enjoy.

  2. No music piracy. Much of the musicians and music shared here are likely small independent acts that deserve fiscal support. If money is an issue, please look into free and/or Creative Commons releases, a list of such titles will be made and built on as the community grows.

  3. No Spam: Please avoid spam. Rather than make individual posts for each song by a musician you like, instead make a singular post bringing attention to the musician. This applies for self-promotion posts as well.

  4. No AI Generated content: AI music posts will be deleted. This community is made to support Canadian talent. An AI cannot be Canadian, nor can it generate truly original content without infringing on countless other artist's copyrights.

  5. No doing stuff that makes me need to make more rules: Moderation reserves the right to take action on anything seen as detrimental to the community. Just cause I didn't write it down here doesn't mean it is necessarily allowed.

Rules are subject to change as the community grows.

BADBADNOTGOOD is a instrumental band and production team from Toronto, Ontario.

The band provides instrumental backgrounds to a wide variety of artists from various genres -- it all depends on who they collaborate with and the vision of the features artist. Many of which are household names such as Tyler The Creator, Kendrick Lamar, Charlotte Day Wilson, and many others.

They were formed in 2010 by Chester Hansen on bass, Matthew Tavares on keyboard, and Alexander Sowinski as drummer. The band would later be joined by Leland Whitty.

While more often do colalborations, in 2024 the band released a album featuring music entirely produced by themselves under the name of Mid Spiral. The album features only instrumentals, with no vocals.

The Bankes Brothers are a relatively recent band that formed in 2017. As shown in their name, they are formed of the two brothers Nelson & Morgan Bankes on vocals and guitar, with Carson Cleaver on lead guitar, and Gray Oxley as the drummer.

The band was formed in Victoria, British Columbia. As per the story on their spotify, they formed on a random friday night in a pool hall and begun playing gigs together less than a week later. They were all former high school classmates who found a "undeniable musical chemistry" and shortly began writing original music after their first show. Their first original song was "See Me Run".

In Waves, according to the spotify plays, is their most popular and widely played song with 335k listens as of writing this.

The Bankes Brothers are supported by Music BC, Creative BC and The Province of British Columbia. Their current label with is Blue Heron Music.

See more from The Bankes Brothers at their website, thebankesbrothers.com . Their latest song, Get To Know was just released just yesterday on the 30th! More info on that new release from canadianbeats.ca

Again, from Wikipedia:
Rock et Belles Oreilles (RBO) was a Canadian radio, television, and stage comedy group popular in the primarily French-speaking province of Quebec during the 1980s and 1990s. Their name was a pun on the Hanna-Barbera blue dog character Huckleberry Hound ("Roquet Belles Oreilles" in French).

Apparently, according to local legend DJs at Montreal strip clubs would have this queued up in the event of unexpected police visits :)

Don't quite remember how I came across this song, but know it was cemented in my brain when my sibling had a run-in involving someone's intimate activities in a public bathroom in Montreal. I said they should have played this song on their phone and see what the reaction was. (Everyone was fine)

*I have no idea if this is how people actually say 'Comedy/Comedic Music' in French.

Better, imo, version in the comments - wanted to share the video too though.

From Wikipedia: War Party is a Cree hip-hop group from Maskwacis, Alberta. Its founding members are Rex Smallboy and Ryan Small. The members are ex-wife Cynthia, Karmen "Hellnback" Omeasoo, Bryan Omeosoo and Tom Crier. The band's music combines rap rhythms with aboriginal themes and stories.

The first First Nations hip hop group to ever have a video play on Much Music, and it's for a pretty fuckin' great song.

Follow-up to the theme of my last post, 'songs I've heard in the background while rewatching Trailer Park Boys' :) Great song regardless.

Hey everybody - we made it to Friday freakin' night! I think it's time to grab a bev, sit back in the comfy chair, kick up our legs, and listen to some Cannabus. Oh, and smoke 'em if you got 'em 🍃.

Out of Welland, ON, get carried off by hypnotizing fuzz, sick riffs, and whatever's makin' you buzz tonight (even if it's something wholesome like friends, family, or memes [maybe not that wholesome]). You deserve it!

Did you live in Canada in 2004? Did you ever turn on a rock station on the radio? Then you've almost certainly heard this track from Antigonish, Nova Scotia's The Trews.

I've got to admit - snob that I am, I often group The Trews along with other bands (lookin' at you, Big Sugar and 54-40) I call 'CANned CON', reliable ol' staples that get tossed into a radio setlist primarily to satisfy Can Con requirements, to the detriment of the wide variety of music we have available.

But if I'm real with myself, this is residual adolescent snobbiness I haven't quite killed off yet - they're catchy, people like them, and I actually like a lot of it, this track included. So here we are.

My French to English song ratio has been a little off the past few days, so may I present one of my favourites, Hippie Hourrah out of (quel surprise) Montreal, QC.

I. Fucking. Love these guys. I am certain that if I spoke French, I'd appreciate their lyrics. Very arts-minded, recently did an exhibit about painter Jacques Hurtubise (which looked cool as hell, and I'm kicking myself for not getting on the train and checking out - see here, you've got one more day if it isn't sold out! ). Definitely worth a little listening time!

Fun psychy, hints of jazz fusiony band from Halifax, NS. Worth seeing live if you get the chance!

Edit: I like a lot of their songs, but gonna highlight this one too

Probably the most well known tune by Langley BC's Gob. Often mentioned in the same breath as Sum41 and Treble Charger to describe a certain kind of pop punk that defined an era for some of us in our teenaged years.

They're playing a free concert in Peterborough this Saturday (July 19th), by the by.

You know him, you love him - it's Nardwuar out of Vancouver, beloved interviewer, CITR-FM legend and human serviette.

Did you know he's in a band? Here's one of their songs.

Doot doola doot doot...

Vilain Pingouin -- meaning Ugly Penguin in English, is a Quebecois rock band that has been active ever since 1986. Originally playing in English rock bands, the singer/guitarist Rudy Caya and the drummer Michel Vaillancourt wish to expand into more franophone music, originally forming a band called "Les Taches", until they expanded the band more and called themselves Vilain Pingouin.

Information sourced from the bands wikipedia page. Further information from the band itself it available on their website, including oncoming tour dates and merch!

As someone learning french, I must say this band is quite nice. The music is quite nice, and the lyrics are clearly pronounced well enough that I can follow along without much difficulty.

Junkhouse was a considerable force in the 1980s-1990s Canadian alternative rock scene, but disbanded in 1998, but have been sporadically active throughout the last few decades. Wikipedia has them listed as currently active, although there has not been any new songs since 1998.

A good portion of the band has passed away. In a most Canadian fashion, the second guitarist Dan Aachen actually passed away from a heart attack while playing hockey.

See Spot Run is from Montreal, Quebec. Their music features both French and English lyrics/titles, from all throughout their over 3 decades of music making -- since 1993.

The band is seemingly still active, but their last new music release was 9 years ago, in 2016.

So it was while listening to this artist, at a show/birthday party at a bar in Ottawa, ON a little less than two months ago, that I learned I'm an old, unhip person. Don't get me wrong - what I saw and heard left me intrigued, I just had a very limited frame of reference for what I was hearing.

This track's pretty approachable, the one that gave me pause was KERPLUNK - I just liked the live version much more than the recorded track.

From Ottawa, rapper, producer, vocalist and DJ - HUG MOSH!
