City police are investigating a video circulating online regarding the Israel-Hamas war which has prompted a Winnipeg city councillor to call for a civic award to be taken away from a local businessman.

Coun. Sherri Rollins wrote an open letter to Mayor Scott Gillingham on Sunday about Ramsey Zeid.

Zeid, a co-owner of Winnipeg's Food Fare grocery stores and president of the Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba (CPAM), accepted a Mayor's Business Improvement Zone Award on May 15.

Rollins said The Canadian Palestinian Association of Manitoba (CPAM) recently re-posted a video in their Instagram Stories that talks about actions that Palestinian people could take to advocate for their cause.

One week before the last provincial election was called, the Progressive Conservative government quietly gave JohnQ Public an $18 million grant.

There was no public announcement about the one-time funding that was paid in full to JohnQ — a company owned by 12 rural municipalities — on Aug. 29, 2023.

The grant is for a land purchase in the Rural Municipality of Ritchot to develop a proposed "Winnipeg Regional Rail Port," NDP government principal secretary Emily Coutts said in an email.

JohnQ has come under scrutiny in the past month after the government requested Manitoba's auditor general to review a $100-million daycare construction program initiated by the previous government that JohnQ project managed with the help of Boom Done Next — a company co-owned by Marni Larkin, the director of the PCs' 2023 re-election campaign.

As wildfires forced the closure of Whiteshell Provincial Park last week, CBC has learned a 2021 report alerted the province to what an out-of-control blaze in the area would look like, warning such an event would lead to catastrophic loss of life and property.

The report, which was commissioned by the Manitoba government, included 10 recommendations. Four years later, it appears none have been fully implemented, though the province says that work is "ongoing."

"Not surprised," one longtime resident said when told about the report's trajectory.

"Very little gets done in the Whiteshell," he said. "Our last big burn was 2016, and they said they were going to fix it then and they didn't."
