[Edit] Solved. I needed to include both "Undetermined" and "English" in the language settings. Having done that, I can now see full displays of the comments.

Hello. I've included a screenshot of the list of "New" posts within the Main community. If you look, you'll see that the posts are dated as such:

  • 2 years ago (though it's hidden by the XFCE lower menu)

I know there's a post I created a few days ago which is absent from this list. I'm just wondering what's going on.

Hello. I recently joined. Some questions. How do I view private messages (that being those I sent to a member, rather than posts to a community)? I've looked in my profile, but it's not listed there. I only see "Overview", "Comments", "Posts", and "Saved". "Saved" shows nothing, and both "Overview" and "Posts" only show two recent posts (I've posted ten times since joining). There seems to be no category for Messages. Anywhere. None. Zilch. And Comments likewise is showing nothing, despite the fact that I've commented on a few topics I've found here. And it doesn't matter if I choose "old" or "new" or "top all time" filters, it simply shows nothing.

Is there some sort of documentation that explains how things work? Because for me, it has not been a very intuitive experience.

This is starting to feel like a regular thing, but we're now on 0.18.2.

Release notes are here - https://join-lemmy.org/news/2023-07-11_-_Lemmy_Release_v0.18.2

Do people value me posting this each time we upgrade? Should I continue? Edit: answer is yes!

I noticed this Wealthsimple Community pop up in my "active" list today.

Clicked in and noticed its empty, but the sidebar contains a sneaky affiliate link for the moderator of that community.

Same thing with the Wealthsimple Trade Community.

I think this sort of activity should be banned from here tbh, definitely at the mod level.

Was just interested in joining Matrix and since my lemmy account was on a Canadian server was wondering if my Matrix account could be too.

lemmy.world is a victim of an XSS attack right now and the hacker simply injected a JavaScript redirection into the sidebar.

It appears the Lemmy backend does not escape HTML in the main sidebar. Not sure if this is also true for community sidebars.

askacanadian has no posts yet is "trending"

I've seen that some instances have already done it preemptively.

I saw the Jerboa app just added support for 2FA, I guess itll be really cool to be among the first instances to support it.

I have taken the advice from this post and blocked all instances with > 10,000 users, from this list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRthB7RtY4Rr0t5fhVKaliJnwSmptMc5oJi7uha_OBcF4wpu4eElxAxNzaCqjlq6NsOE9GpgSnMzZ2x/pubhtml

I will continue to monitor things and will make another announcement if more blocks are necessary.

If anybody is interested in getting a cleaned up instance federated again, feel free to contact me over DM (if you’re currently blocked, you can contact me on Matrix: @smorks:40to.ca).

I've been talking to many people about the controversy with Reddit, why I left it and why I went onto Lemmy, Kbin and Mastadon instead. Some of my friends have commented that the control is still a problem as other platforms and it is all dependent on who owns the software, who owns the hardware, who are the admins, who are the moderators and which community or group has the most influence.

Who are these people that influence the most control on the fediverse? Are they Conservative? Are they Liberal? Are they Republican? Are they Democrat? Do they lean to the left of politics? to the right? or are they center? Are they even political? But also if they had to be would they easily or not so easily influenced?

So .. for the ELI5 version of the question ... Who owns the fediverse?

Just curious as this is all fun and open till it scales to expensive. What is the lemmy.ca plan to sustain / fund it self?

Constant donation nagging like Wikipedia?

I wrote a guide to help users with their migration to Lemmy

This guide will help new lemmy users find and subscribe-to (remote) lemmy ~~subreddits~~ communities

hey,

for some reason i can't see the vancouver community from my beehaw account (eg https://beehaw.org/c/vancouver@lemmy.ca returns a 404 and it doesn't show up in https://beehaw.org/communities), but https://lemmy.ca/c/vancouver works just fine, any idea why that would be?

thanks!

Is there a list of blocked instances somewhere? I was trying to interact with a thread from lemmygrad i found on lemmy.ml but could not get it to come up in search. This makes me assume its blocked

There has been a steady trickle of new users here today, and in the past little while, mostly due to the bad decisions that reddit is currently making.

Anyways, welcome! Feel free to look around, and if you have any questions about anything lemmy related, feel free to ask!

Also, if you feel up to it, introduce yourself in the comments below!

edit: Here's a nice getting started guide for lemmy: https://tech.michaelaltfield.net/2023/06/11/lemmy-migration-find-subreddits-communities/

i should have added it here a while ago!

Hey all,

If you've noticed that federated communities have stopped coming through to lemmy.ca, it's apparently due to known federation bugs that the Lemmy team is working on resolving for their 0.14 release.

However, after working through some logs today and posting to the Lemmy matrix chat, it sounds like they're going to push a 0.13.4 fix release (we're currently on 0.13.3) right away.

Stay tuned!

Lemmy.ca currently shows 22 comments on this post, but its native instance, lemmy.ml, shows 35 comments.

It's not (or not only) a matter of only older comments being present, or of comments being from different instances: for example, this comment from a lemmy.ml user doesn't appear on lemmy.ca but this later comment from a different lemmy.ml user does.

Is this a known problem?
