The union said in its letter that its labor contracts enshrine the right to a safe workplace, and that the presence of ICE or U.S. Border Patrol agents inside or in the immediate vicinity of properties constitutes “unusually dangerous conditions” that trigger employees’ right to refuse to work. The contracts also prohibit employers from allowing immigration agents onto their properties without a warrant, the letter said.

“We want to be clear,” the letter said. “If ICE or similar enforcement agents are present at or near your property, workers must be allowed to leave or refuse to report to work without reprisal.”

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, who is a leading Republican candidate for governor, has seized more than 650,000 ballots from last November’s election and is investigating whether they were fraudulently counted.

“This investigation is simple: Physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes recorded,” Bianco said at a news conference Friday.

"The unusual probe drew a sharp rebuke from California Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta, who said in a statement Friday that it is “unprecedented in both scope and scale” and appears “not to be based on facts or evidence.”

“There is no indication, anywhere in the United States, of widespread voter fraud,” Bonta said. “Counts, recounts, hand counts, audits, and court cases all support this.”

In late January, the day after federal agents shot and killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis, about 400 people showed up for a training session, Unión del Barrio organizer Ron Gochez said.

“The very next day, we had 1,000 people on a Zoom training for educators — and we couldn’t have more because the Zoom limit was 1,000,” Gochez said.

Organizers in Pasadena expected a few dozen volunteers at All Saints Episcopal Church and were surprised when nearly 800 showed up for the training session, according to Pasadena Now.

For the first time, the majority of volunteers at a recent training session were white, Gochez said.

“I think the administration and ICE thought that by killing Alex (Pretti), that people would be scared and intimidated and would stop participating,” he said.

Instead, it has had the opposite effect.

In a Feb. 16 statement, the LAPD states it’s unlawful for minors under 18 to be in public places, streets, or amusement spots during school hours. Exceptions include emergencies or being with a parent. The department cited state education code requiring that children between the ages of 6 and 18 “must attend a full-time public day school for the full designated day.”

[…]

A day later, Bill Essayli, the first assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, condemned the walkouts in a post on X, saying, “The only thing they will accomplish is ensuring violent agitators will be criminally prosecuted, juveniles included.” Essayli also posted photos of youth he said were sought in connection with a “violent attack on [Federal Protective Service] at our downtown Los Angeles property.”

It’s an absolutely wild misuse of the criminal justice system to target children exercising their constitutional rights after having their community, friends, and possibly family members terrorized or kidnapped by federal agents. I can’t imagine making those kinds of statements and not immediately wanting to crawl in a hole and die of shame.

The orders will go into effect at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The 383 properties affected by the evacuation orders will be visited and contacted directly. “LA County Sheriff’s deputies will begin door-to-door notifications this morning,” L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said in an email Monday. Several areas are also under evacuation warnings, which you can view here.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to move forward with a proposed ordinance that prohibits law enforcement officers from concealing their identities while interacting with the public in unincorporated areas of the county.

The proposal would require all officers and agents — local, state or federal — to refrain from wearing masks or other facial coverings. It also mandates that they display visible identification, including their agency name along with either their last name or badge number.

According to county officials, violations would be punishable as infractions or misdemeanors. But it’s uncertain how L.A. County will enforce the new ordinance. It mirrors California’s first-in-the-nation state law passed in September.

The Trump administration has said its agents will not comply with California’s mask ban. And the Department of Justice sued California in November, challenging it.

✍️ PETITION ✍️ When the winds came and the fires burned our community to the ground this past January, we experienced a disaster on a scale we never could have imagined. Now, we are experiencing a second disaster: families are not getting the financial resources they need to stay on their land in Altadena and rebuild. We are witnessing the historic Black community of West Altadena being pushed out. Many of us are still paying mortgage payments on houses that are no longer standing. Many of us don’t have insurance or the insurance isn’t paying. Some of us are even facing foreclosure. So many of us are still figuring out where the money to rebuild is going to come, or how to hang on in the interim - debating whether we can hold out until we get our settlement money from Southern California Edison, which could be a few years away. Gov. Newsome passed AB 238 in September, offering up to a year of mortgage forbearance — but it’s not enough. It relies on homeowners to opt in, and excludes many elderly and displaced residents. With the outstanding cases against SoCal Edison not expected to resolve until 2027, that’s too little, too late. That's why we are asking Gov. Newsom to Freeze All Fire-Related Foreclosures in Altadena — Keep Altadena Families On Their Land! https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-foreclosures-call-for-immediate-moratorium-on-altadena-foreclosures

A California Democrat whose district and constituents have been targeted by ICE raids took a shot at first lady Melania Trump after President Donald Trump said that ICE should continue its aggressive policies, The Daily Beast reports Monday.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), who represents the Golden State's 34th District, wrote this on X:

"Haven't gone far enough?? Any further and ICE will be deporting Melania..."

To receive the discounted meal, guests are asked to show one of the following:

A federal government employee ID

A military ID

Chinese Massacre of 1871

Tue Oct 24, 1871

Image

The Chinese Massacre of 1871 was a race riot that occurred on this day in Los Angeles, California when a mob of around 500 white and mestizo people entered Chinatown and attacked, robbed, and murdered Chinese residents.

The massacre took place on Calle de los Negros, also known as "Negro Alley". The mob gathered after hearing that a policeman had been shot and a rancher killed by Chinese immigrants. Historian John Johnson described the ensuing violence as the "largest mass lynching in American history".

An estimated 17 to 20 Chinese immigrants were hanged by the mob in the course of the riot, but most had already been shot to death. At least one was mutilated when someone cut off a finger to get his diamond ring.

Ten members of the mob were prosecuted, eight were convicted of manslaughter. The convictions were overturned on appeal due to various technicalities.

Find alternatives to calling the Los Angeles Police Department.

Typically, people call the police because they are experiencing or perceive an emergency and need immediate assistance. In order to provide the most effective alternatives to calling the police or 911, unless otherwise indicated, the resources included here are limited to those that offer immediate assistance through emergency or crisis services.

The Self-Generation Incentive Program (SGIP) is a State of California initiative that provides funding for income qualified residential customers to install solar and battery storage systems on residential property. Solar panel systems provide residents with the ability to generate their own electricity, while battery storage systems can store electricity for use during peak rate periods or in the evenings when solar production decreases.

Every SGIP project will help enhance grid reliability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote clean energy. It also supports LADWP’s goal to ensure equitable access to clean energy.
