I recently started using i3 (my first WM), and I used to use Plasma. In Plasma, when Spotify was opened, I just went to my system tray and there was a Spotify icon, which if I right clicked it, it let me close Spotify to system tray.

In i3 the only tray icons are the programs that are actually in the tray (Steam, e.g), so I cannot "close it to tray" as in Plasma.

I am looking for a GUI text editor on Linux with a GUI which will allow me to connect to other machines via SSH and edit text files on these machines.

Is there such a thing or is there another way to do this with an encrypted connection?

SOLVED: Installed GloriousEggroll custom Proton. For Talos, also had to set launch options (PROTON_ENABLE_NVAPI=1 PROTON_LOG=1 %command%) or else I'd just get a black screen. First runs of games take a bit to get loaded, but launch without issue on subsequent runs.

I'm a recent convert to Linux - currently running Mint 21.2. I don't have a huge Steam library and thankfully most of the handful of games I play have worked fine - Deep Rock, Lethal Company, Sea of Thieves, Elite Dangerous (although that one is through Epic, thanks Heroic Launcher).

Two others that I've tried so far - Astroneer and Talos Principle II - don't seem to want to get started. When I hit play on either of those in Steam, it just stalls at "Launching..." I can cancel the launching and it'll go back to the Play button, but at this point Steam won't launch anything else. When I try to exit steam, the main window closes but its icon is still in the system tray icons. At this point, I have to kill the steam tasks before I can get it to re-open.

Since I'm seeing similar behavior for two different games, I'm guessing it might have something to do with the Proton config? I don't know much about it other than it being the main compatibility layer that gets the games running on Linux. In my Steam compatibility settings, I've got Steam Play enabled for supported and all other titles, and I've got "Run other titles with" set to Proton Experimental. I've seen that you can set the Proton version on a per-game basis as well. If that's the issue, is it just trial-and-error figuring out which version I need to use with each game?

Hi all,

I have recently installed Debian 12, KDE Plasma on my desktop pc, coming from windows 10.

I haven't yet messed with any drivers, everything seemed to run just fine. Until i noticed that after 1 or more hours just browsing or watching a streaming video, my desktop pc starts to rattle as if it is suddenly hard at work, the mouse cursor becomes unresponsive, and a minute later it doesn't move at all and the only thing left is to shut down with the power button.

So, i'm pretty sure nothing is suddenly wrong with fans or CPU temperature or whatnot, but maybe a Nvidia driver should be installed? Can i just follow Debians advice here?

Do you need additional info?

I have installed ClamAV to scan for viruses. It has 2 commands for scanning: these are clamscan and clamdscan. I use clamdscan because it is faster.

However, clamdscan cannot scan within home directories, or any directory it does not have permissions for, even when running as root. clamscan does not have this problem.

I've written a small bash script to help with updating various packages/dependencies on my machine (Pop!_OS) but it doesn't seem to be working correctly for flatpak. If I run flatpak update in the terminal it will show that I have updates, but when running the script there aren't any updates.

The Script:

#!/bin/bash

# Update package list
sudo apt update -y

# Upgrade the packages and dependencies
sudo apt upgrade -y

# Remove unnecessary packages and dependencies
sudo apt autoremove -y

# Clean package cache
sudo apt clean -y

# Update Flatpak
sudo flatpak update -y

# Update firmware
sudo fwupdmgr update -y

echo "All updates and upgrades have completed sucessfully!"

EDIT: Running flatpak update -y without sudo fixes the issue.

I have been trying some of the immutable linux OSes because from what I understand they are more modern and feature better security and reliability. What I have found so far is shocking. Half of these don't support my laptop (probably because it's nvidia optimus). Some I tried like guix were very difficult to install, configure, and use with sprase documentation. Good luck trying to use KDE, wayland, or pipewire for example. BlendOS was notably better and could at least run on my laptop but chocked with nvidia driver issues.

I have switched to pop os on my laptop for now but looking at alternatives and what to install on my desktop.

I recently bought a IdeaPad i5 slim laptop, it works fine until I dual boot it with Linux, it cannot detect any kind of HDMI external display, I have tried 2 monitors and a TV and have no luck. And also there is weird behaviour where the Laptop will not use the external display while booting and only show the Lenovo splash screen on the laptop screen. And only switch to using the external display when Windows arrive to the sign in screen. This info maybe helpful

Welcome :)

I'm on Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS and up to date.

I shutdown my computer with no problems last night. Today I decrypted my drive with the on-screen prompt and it followed into a solid-grey background; My 3 accounts were not displaying. Rebooting has done nothing regarding the problem. The only notable thing I've done is install drawio and thunderbird from the pop shop.

Despite this issue, I was able to press [Enter] and input my password successfully. Everything else seems to be running hunky-dory.

I read through my syslogs while scritching my chin, but I honestly have no idea what to look for this time. I scanned through my entire post-boot log entry to no avail, but I'm also a... linux noob.

Help please q.q

I am trying to install this package on Nobara 38 but it only seems to be available on Deb and Ubuntu https://pkgs.org/download/libpcre3-dev

I've looked around and it seems I need to build the package from source but I cannot find the source or figure out how to build it. I downloaded libpcre3-dev_8.39-15_amd64.deb but im not sure what to do with the file.

I found the PCRE website but it doesn't have a libpcre3-dev https://www.pcre.org/

It might just be easier to do what I need to do in an ubuntu VM. Any advice on how to get this package installed would be appreciated.

Hello guys, I'm using Parrot OS on an Asus G513. My problem is when I unintentionally adjust shortcuts (filled with Launcher1) automatically. However, this problem didn't catch my attention, when I used to boot live USB, after user space load any keystroke I press seems not working, from opening terminal to other shortcuts, however after like 5 min it will start to respond but each few key press screen brightness will get dimmer and dimmer, I thought it's problem with DE. now I just can press key combination (Alt + arrow) or (Mod + f) When I keep pressing return to delete, launcher1 eventually will get filled again before I realized it The only way I can adjust things now, via ssh

additional notes

  1. I can type in my password normally on the lock screen

  2. I can't log in via tty. Even before this incident, this is what will happen when I try to log in

hostname login: USER@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^
password:@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^
login inncorrect

tty will keep printing @^ combination until i hit Ctrl + c

Things I've tried: looking at /home/USER/.config/kglobalshortcutsrc, but there's no luck, and the last modification date is May 2

Edit: add shortcut photo

Update: I've managed to adjust the shortcut by holding "return + ctrl + alt + m" . But still, I can't figure out what causes rapid input.

thanks in advance.

I’ve been thinking about this old desktop machine under my desk that hasn’t been used in years. I’m thinking the death of the desktop computer is not too far ahead for me. I can’t see myself buying another in my lifetime and my building days ended in the mid 90s. I don’t really have a need for this thing at all, I don’t game, I’m pretty much off the internet already. Ageing out of all of it I suppose.

My question is, as a bit of a weekend hobby, is it feasible for a bit of an ordinary Joe, middle/a little older aged, to go from a life in MS and never having to run a server or hosting anything, to follow something like this to any meaningful outcome? https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/5911320

I write a bit of vba, do a fair bit of querying to a database someone else maintains for a living. (SQL). Again, never much but basic tables and queries/procedures.

The desktop currently is: OS: windows 10 home Processor: Intel i7-6700k @ 4GHz Graphics: GTX970 Ram: 16gb

Kidding myself? Obviously I’m thinking Linux and learning a new OS to some extent would in theory be in the mix.

Hi all,

I'm testing out different distros and I'm giving them just 20gbs for the main install partition, with the aim to have everything stored on the NAS. Is there recommended way to do this? I'm thinking just making a symlink to a location on my NAS but I'm concerned that'll cause some unforeseen complications. Would really appreciate any advice!

I have a bigger SSD that I plan on migrating to. Thankfully I have ZFS on the disk, is it as easy as exporting and importing pools? What if I want to increase the pool size?

I have reinstalled my Fedora 38 on an old laptop with only 4gigs of RAM, problem is it allocated only 2gb of tmpfs, and so far it caused me a ton of problems, it runs out of space pretty quickly, especially when installing big size sw, I've read you can modify the size of it by changing the entry in fstab, but I couldn't find a tmpfs entry there, I've searched the Arch Wiki and found this:

Mounting tmpfs at /dev/shm is handled automatically by systemd and manual configuration in fstab is not necessary.

So I believe this is the case for me, would adding a new entry inside fstab work without any issue?

I'm currently trying to set up a self-hosted SearX search engine on Ubuntu 22.04. In order for the search engine to work, I have to manually run the following commands on startup:

#! /usr/bin/bash

sudo -H -u searx -i

cd /usr/local/searx/searx-src

export SEARX_SETTINGS_PATH="/etc/searx/settings.yml"

python searx/webapp.py

This is kind of annoying to have to do, so I put the script into /etc/rc.local and went through all the steps to enable all that. Now my rc.local file looks like:

#!/bin/sh -e

#! /usr/bin/bash

sudo -H -u searx -i

cd /usr/local/searx/searx-src

export SEARX_SETTINGS_PATH="/etc/searx/settings.yml"

python searx/webapp.py

exit 0

However, the code fails, and upon checking "sudo systemctl status rc-local.service" I get the following (abbreviated) error message:

Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/rc-local.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)

I understand that an Exit Code 127 means that the code is failing because it can't access the following directory:

cd /usr/local/searx/searx-src

But I honestly have no idea how to fix my code to make this possible. Please lmk if you have any suggestions

I'm running the nvidia official version, i have a 4090.

journalctl -xe gives "failed to switch root: specificed switch root path /ssysroot doesnot seem to be on OS tree. os-release file is missing"

I've seen some mention to try rebooting into a different kernel. I have no idea how to do that. Everything I have seen suggests commands that do not exist in the emergency mode. and I can't boot at all so I don't konw what to do.

Please advice. I asked in the discord but no one even responded and I'm not sure where to get help with this distro

Hello,

my secondary monitor has a borked EDID. Currently in X11 i use a xrandr bash script on login to set it up.

I tinkered around a bit with wlr-randr in sway (and also gnome-randr in gnome) but i could not get it to work.

Thanks in advance.

One can create a file named .bash_aliases in their home directory to create aliases for that user.

Is there a way to create a .bash_aliases that is system wide for all users? I know one can add aliases in the /etc/bash.bashrc file but this is not ideal.

And is there a way to achieve this with other shells such as zsh and fish?
