Early in my career, I worked with someone who wrote emails like private venting sessions sarcastic jabs, complaints, even full-blown rants. One day, a client was accidentally cc’d on a thread not meant for them. It nearly cost us the contract. My coworker was let go within the week.

That moment stuck with me. Since then, I’ve followed one rule: never write anything in an email you wouldn’t be okay reading in a meeting, projected on a screen.

Here’s why this mindset is powerful:

Emails age poorly. What seems funny or harmless today might sound hostile, passive-aggressive, or unprofessional next month.

You don’t control the chain. People forward, screenshot, and save. Your casual “off the record” comment could outlive you in that company.

You future-proof your reputation. Managers notice clean, respectful communication. When promotions come up, your digital footprint matters more than you think.

It doesn’t mean being robotic. You can be warm, honest, even witty just assume it’s public. Because in many cases, it eventually will be.

A few years ago, I moved to Chicago for a job. I knew no one. I tried all the usual stuff — gym memberships, meetups, work mixers but every conversation felt forced. I was starting to feel like a background character in someone else’s city.

Then I signed up for a pottery class.

Not because I was good at it. Not even because I liked pottery. I just figured: worst case, I waste two hours a week making ugly bowls. Best case? I talk to someone.

Here’s what happened:

When you're bad at something in a group of people also bad at it, everyone drops their ego. You laugh at your disasters. You bond over shared awkwardness. I ended up making actual friends — not just surface-level ones, but real “let's hang out after class” people.

Bonus? When you improve, even a little, you feel good. It gives you something to look forward to. Even better if it’s something creative or with your hands (pottery, improv, cooking, etc).

So if you’re new in town, or just trying to meet people as an adult (which is hard), skip the apps and take a class in something you're awful at. You won't regret it.

It’s common for older vets to hang their dog tags on display. It wasn’t until 2015 that the military stopped stamping them with their Social Security number.

Have a Samsung smart TVs with ads that were annoying as hell. Found out they can be blocked and tried it. It worked!

Many recipes call for grated ginger, but ginger can get moldy or dry out pretty quickly if kept out in the open or in the fridge.

So if you buy ginger, put the entire thing in the freezer!

  • It‘s much easier to grate
  • It lasts practically forever

I have no idea why this never occurred to me, but I‘m really happy I discovered this one.

Happy cooking!

Hey all ☺️ i'm wondering if there are any fellow poors here who have had to live without electricity for a prolonged period of time. The power company won't accept a partial payment so it will take me several months to save up to pay off the full balance.

I'm interested to know how you keep cool in the summer and maybe some nutritious meal ideas that don't involve cooking or a fridge. I like to pretend that I'm camping (no fires though lol)

I also have three cats if that matters, but they don't seem to mind.

Thanks in advance!

Quick edit: hi friends, here’s some background info. I live in the US. haven’t had a job in like a year, though not for lack of trying. I got very sick and was unable to get out of bed for six months. I don’t have any family here. I’ve reached out to several places for help including churches and the government. I just recently got a job (yay!)

Because I own my home (though not for long lol) and don’t rent, help is surprisingly limited.

My cats eat really well, I have had them for years, I used to be very financially stable before I left an abusive relationship. I can handle people being assholes, but please learn to give people grace.

I found a home for one of my cats and I am absolutely devastated that I have to give up part of my family. Like ugly crying for the past week because I know I’m gonna have to give him up tomorrow. But please keep in mind that they are very happy. We cuddle every night and they get two cans of wet food a day + ice in their water bowls.

For that one bitch that said this is animal abuse… damn…. Are you not worried about me? I’m much less equipped to handle this than literal animals who are used to living outside lmao. Like I’m actually giggling uncontrollably right now

Sounds dramatic but this book has already saved my family thousands in medical costs by teaching us how insurance really works.

Quick tips from the book:

Always appeal denials - insurance companies expect 95% of people to just give up

Ask for "peer to peer review" where your doctor talks directly to their medical director

File complaints with your state insurance commissioner for patterns of denials

External review is free and often overturns wrongful denials

The author breaks down exactly how insurance companies profit from complexity and denials. Once you understand their playbook, you can beat them at their own game.

Used the medical necessity appeal template for my daughter's physical therapy and got 2 more months approved that insurance initially denied.

Even if you're healthy now, read this before you need it. When you're sick/injured is not the time to learn how to fight insurance companies.

The policy solutions at the end give me hope that maybe this broken system can actually be fixed someday.

If you shop at Walmart and have a bunch of coins lying around, don’t waste money on Coinstar’s ~12% fee. Instead, go to the self-checkout lane.

At most Walmart locations, you can flip up the coin chute lid on the self-checkout machine and dump coins straight in. The machine will count your coins and apply them to your total like cash.

Bonus: If you insert more coins than needed for your purchase, the machine gives you the remaining balance in bills, not more coins.

This makes it a sneaky-efficient way to convert coins to paper money for free while buying things you already need.

My kid tore the aglet off his lace, then a day later used the same shoes to run under sprinklers, so I had to dry them. Now what's my best way to relace?

Employees involved in interviewing will often discuss job candidates in digital spaces that are accessible to the entire company and then forget to delete these conversations or make them private before the job candidate starts. This info (both the good and the bad) can be incredibly valuable information as you start your new job.

Too tired to clean the whole kitchen? Wipe the counter. Can’t write the whole report? Open the doc and title it.

Momentum > motivation. Start tiny, and let that be enough.

We often jump straight into asking questions, sharing related stories, or giving advice when someone tells us good news. But doing this can unintentionally minimize their excitement or happiness.

Instead, take a moment first to acknowledge their feelings by saying something like, “Wow, that’s amazing! You must be so proud!” or “Congratulations! I can see how much this means to you.”

This small shift not only validates their emotions but strengthens your relationship by showing genuine support and enthusiasm.

Leading with intent means being clear about why you’re having the conversation, and letting the other person know. Are you trying to understand? Solve a problem? Clear the air? Naming your purpose sets the tone.

Then, STFU—Seek To First Understand. Ask questions. Listen properly. Reflect back what you hear before jumping in with your own view.

When people know your intent and feel heard, conversations are calmer, clearer, and way more productive.

Also, sometimes it’s as simple as Shutting The Fuck Up and letting the other person talk.

Perhaps a bit niche but I'm in the midst of a long video editing and I find it hard to stay productive on it without getting discouraged by my relative lack of progress.

When someone tells you they're struggling or shares bad news, your instinct might be to fix it or offer a silver lining. However, jumping to solutions can unintentionally dismiss their emotions. Next time, pause and say something like, "That sounds really tough," or "I'm sorry you're going through this." Letting someone feel heard first makes a huge difference. You can always help brainstorm solutions later after they've had the chance to feel understrood.

This mostly applies to something you don't use very often, but when you need it (or would benefit from it) having the batteries right there, makes it way more handy than having to hunt for them.

Why not leave them inside so you can just switch the (insert device here) on in one shot? You can, of course, do that, but the idea is to prevent damage to the device from battery leakage. Especially if the actual device itself is sentimental or goes to something that is, but being able to pick it up and have working batteries right there, means it doesn't gather dust until you give it away - but doesn't get tossed due to being destroyed by leaking batteries. The best of both worlds. :)

(NiCDs and NiMH batteries, by the way, don't have much inside to leak out, so don't worry about a Dustbuster or rechargeable drill being damaged by leakage)

I put it near the handle where I can’t miss it, and it’s saved me from forgetting lunch, paperwork, and birthday cards more times than I can count !

Most apps and digital services have in built tracking and privacy options set to the company’s pre choice. A lot of the times you have the option to change most of these to your own desires. Thus , significantly reducing your data collection in the log run.

It can be hard to tell which is the top and which is the side of queen or king-size sheets, so you can sew a tight loop of colored thread into the hem at the top and bottom. Leave the loose ends untrimmed so they're easier to see.

I've done that with socks too. For some reason I bought some some socks that were identical to some I already have, but just a little bit shorter. So I just sewed a little knot of white thread into the tops of the short ones. Makes matching them in the laundry much easier.

I recently noticed that I was hearing music more clearly from one ear than the other, so I tried a little experiment. I took a single earbud, played music at a comfortable volume in my left ear, and noted the volume percentage on my phone , around 40%.

Then I switched the earbud to my right ear and found I had to raise it up to 80% to hear it just as clearly.

That’s when I realized there might be some hearing loss in my right ear . It’s obviously not a medical diagnosis, but just gave me an estimate of 50% loss (assuming one ear is fine )

If it is an appliance, large purchase, or something you would rather put in a warranty claim before buying a new one, just snap a quick picture of the receipt right after purchasing! With the search features picture galleries on your phone, it is super easy to find.

Exhibit A: My vacuum cleaner had the clip on its canister break and now dumps its contents on the floor half the time I pick it up. With a quick search on Google Photos, I found the receipt from 3 years ago and filed a warranty claim. The new canister is soon to be on its way. Thats $30-40 saved purchasing a new canister or $150 saved on purchasing a new vacuum!

Even if you don’t plan to become a DIY expert, knowing how to fix simple thing like a leaky faucet, clogged sink, running toilet, or a dead wall outlet can save you time, money, and frustration. Search for your exact problem on YouTube and watch a couple short videos before calling a professional, you’d be surprised how often it’s a quick fix with basic tools.
