As much as I like Lemmy, I was growing tired of the fixed width styles and decides to write some quick User CSS overrides to make it more compact and use the entire screen width.

Here's a github gist with the styles -- I haven't tested everything so there could be bugs. You can use a browser extension like Stylus for Firefox to apply the theme. I have tested with darkly theme only so far, but I imagine it'll work for litely as well.

I was reading this GitHub issue about implementing user sync across different instances of Lemmy. I understand that this feature would be beneficial for users with multiple accounts, but I'm wondering if it would be possible to achieve this using a bot instead of implementing it directly in the main program. I noticed that @db0@lemmy.dbzer0.com is working on a Python API for Lemmy, which might offer some insights on how to achieve this. Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas on how this could be done using a bot?

I am still playing around with Lemmy like I am sure a lot of people are. I have accounts on multiple instances to see how things are and what not.

I understand why beehaw decided to defederate with .world, I just didn't think much about the consequence of it after it happened. Today I was browsing the !anime@lemmy.ml from my beehaw account and looked at the same from my this .ml account and realized I am missing so posts.. Any user from .world posting a discussion thread for an anime I watch from, I can't participate in..

I could create my own discussion post about the anime, but now there are two posts going about the same thing. beehaw users would be able to see and participate in this now, but every other instance will see two posts. Duplicating the same thing and splitting the discussion unnecessarily.

I love the power, control, and principles behind Lemmy and the wider fediverse, its just something that is annoying me at the moment. Its amazing for taking care of spam instances (70k users with no posts? yea right), but when one large/popular instance spanks another, it can be problematic. Thinking of maybe self hosting (which I am no stranger to) as a way to avoid an issue like this in future.

Still like Lemmy and wanting to push through these "quirks", but just wanted to vent a little.

Photos I post to Lemmy never come out right. I never had this issue with Reddit and I use same device to upload with. Tried through app Jerbroa and the browser. Can someone help?

Lets say I have an account on lemmy server A, and with my account I make a lemmy community. Some people post in it. Everything is cool. But for whatever reason the admin/owner of the lemmy server your lemmy community is on decides to ban you. What happens to the community you made? How does the lemmy software respond to it? Does your community get banned with you? Or does the community just get stuck without any admin and people can still post in it?

I'm xposting here too. People on Firefox sub also report the same: pwas of Lemmy servers on 0.18 crash the browser either on startup or minimizing depending on the instance. At least FF, but Chrome is reported to crash too.

Is this known? Nobody reacted in support sub and I find the github hard to search tbh.

Inb4 I know I have an old phone with low storage and old Android 9 and a slightly outdated Fenix fork (IceRaven/Fenix 112) with a bunch of extensions and the problem could be in any of these. Just wanna know if it's definitely on my end or maybe not. Because I never have this kind of problems with any other web site.

Anyway. I tend to use permanent Private mode apart from a couple PWAs, including some Lemmy instances. My "home" lemmy.world with 0.17.4 works well enough.

But I just realized that when using instances on 0.18 like lemmy.ml or lemmynsfw, minimizing the PWA (going to phone home screen) crashes the entire browser, including any other windows.

So, is it just me?

For comparison, I tried it on Bromite (yes I know it's not developed anymore): using the add home shortcut for 0.17.4 lemmy.world just indeed adds a browser shortcut. With 0.18 instances, the shortcuts make Bromite act like proper PWAs without the address bar etc. But not crashing.

Preface. I tried my hardest to search here, google, etc... to find an answer before I posted.

On my personal Lemmy instance I have had no success subscribing to a kbin magazine. Other Lemmy instances (with the exception of lemmy.world) are working fantastically so far. Kbin mags are coming up in search just fine, but subs are stuck in "Subscription Pending", and unlike lemmy.world which is sending me some content, I can see no activity.

I have an account on lemmy.one that had previously been able to subscribe to content on kbin.social. Although, as I write this post it appears I can't subscribe to new magazines there either.

Do we know if this is a known issue, like the one with lemmy.world? Or maybe with 0.18?

Just looking for any help here. Or if I did miss a topic, a pointer in that direction would be appreciated. Thanks.

The screenshot shows the recommendations from https://join-lemmy.org/.

Still being federated with exploding-heads does not mean the instance supports them. But it means that shit-heads are allowed to take part in the discussions on their communities. They do intoxicate the discussions we will have. They will attack minorities. Maybe you will not be harassed by them, more vulnerable people will be. They are allowed to moderate communities on these instances. Exploding-heads members actively guide young and unknowing people to their hateful instance.

They try to start discussions about the holocaust https://sh.itjust.works/post/227268. They create communities only to crosspost exploding-heads content https://lemmy.world/c/pharma They take over discussions against them https://exploding-heads.com/comment/132189 "WHY are vulnerable people joining a decentralized system? Isnt this why you want a closed, not for public eyes community?"

This was a link to exploding-heads, because when someone copies a permalink of a comment from them on another instance, it will be a link to their instance.

Are we building a place where vulnerable people are welcome and safe or are we building a place where nazis are welcome and safe?

They want you to block them, they comment that everywhere. They block people who are in favor of defederating them https://sh.itjust.works/post/225714 When their opponents won't see them anymore, they can harass and recruit without being noticed.

Blocking will not solve the problem. They will spread even when you close your eyes.

M̶a̶y̶b̶e̶ t̶h̶i̶s̶ w̶a̶s̶ n̶o̶t̶ d̶o̶n̶e̶ i̶n̶t̶e̶n̶t̶i̶o̶n̶a̶l̶l̶y̶, b̶u̶t̶ n̶o̶w̶ there is a post with a list of 'health communities on Lemmy' with the first entry guiding to exploding heads. https://lemmy.world/post/396561

It is still possible that some of the mentioned instances do support them. The owner of sh.itjust.works says that because of “free speech” all other instances would be allowed. It is suspicious to me that his line is drawn only for lemmygrad https://sh.itjust.works/comment/130474

The decision to block the Lemmygrad instance was less a question of censorship, and more an issue of personal conviction. As a volunteer dedicating my personal resources and time to facilitating a space for users to create, discover, and discuss - not just on this instance, but across the Fediverse - I admit that this choice was made alone, selfishly, without the consent or thoroughly considering the collective opinion of the community. With the above said, sh.itjust.works has had the lemmygrad instance blocked from its first day.

I’d like to also point out that the lemmygrad instance has far more blocked instances than what is currently blocked here. Maybe you can create a post on that instance to see what that’s all about and report back?

At the same time they seem to ignore the call and vote to defederate with exploding-heads https://sh.itjust.works/post/433483.

They rejected to delete The_Donald from sh.itjust.works until they feared to get isolated from the other instances: https://lemmy.ml/post/1467310. They where aware of The_Donald and ignored early warnings. (https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/comment/266248). TD was more important to them than keeping the only mod of their 4th biggest community c/patientgamers (https://sh.itjust.works/post/291747, https://sh.itjust.works/post/388922)

Since The_Donald was removed, I did not find more racist content on the mentioned servers. That is part their tactics. They act harmless but recruit to their instance, attract likeminded people and chase others away. Discussions on sh.itjust.works about such topics are very toxic already, soon they might be able to do more harm.

(My research is very limited, as i could not search for all exploding-heads member content on other instances by entering their domain. I know there are nice communities on sh.itjust.works.)

What can be done? On joinmastodon.org there is a Mastodon Server Covenant with very few useful rules, one of them is "Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia". https://joinmastodon.org/covenant It would be a first step to implement these rules for join-lemmy.org. At least instances that want to be recommended on there should have to agree to that rule.

More actions should be taken now. Please make suggestions. Things will only become more complicated. The next reddit wave is incoming.

Hi, usual disclaimer of not sure where to post this, or if this is already a thing.

But as a new Lemmier (?) I would love a feature that allows me to create a meta community or view where I can shove all the communities that have the same topic.

So I would have for example a meta community named "Tech" and I can add all the tech communities from different instances, so I can get a unified view of a topic thorough multiple instances.

Is this already a thing, or is it planned?

I've been using Lemmy for almost a week and I'm loving it. But some aspects are still a bit obscure to me. For instance : I have my account on lemmy.ml. I used https://browse.feddit.de/ to find some communities. I want to subscribe to https://reddthat.com/c/rts.

What's the easiest way to do so ? It looks like the search function only shows communities from the instance I'm signed on.

Wanted to say THANK YOU to whoever came up with and implemented the extra sorting algos, specifically the Top Hour and Top Six Hours. The six hour one especially is great when looking for a quick break at work!

Hi all,

I’ve been observing and participating in this community for about a week now. I’m liking it so far, but one thing I’m really missing is a way to link to other Lemmy content in a way that’s instance-aware.

For example, if I were to want to link to !risa@startrek.website, I’d link to https://startrek.website/c/risa. But then I’d end up at a Lemmy instance where I don’t have an account; I’d really prefer to be redirected to https://derp.foo/c/risa@startrek.website.

So here’s my proposal: create a central Lemmy redirection service where people can set their instance (in a cookie). The idea would be that people can link to, say, https://example.com/c/risa@startrek.website, and be ensured us lemmings end up on an instance where we can actually post.

Linking to posts and comments should ideally be part of this as well but whould involve a little more work.

Companies have strategically undermined community driven projects in the past many times. We should all keep an eye out for corporate movements in this space. I felt the duty to spread this awareness.

I saw this in another thread on /c/Showerthoughts. I think it's important for this to be circulated widely so that the broader Fediverse community is aligned. We don't want admins second-guessing their decisions when users start infighting. We should be united in our thinking and ready to protect our platform.

I recently came across a torrent that seems to be an archive of Reddit. It got me thinking if it would be possible to make it locally browsable. However, I also considered the possibility that someone might have already addressed this by creating a public Lemmy instance, enabling the content to be accessible from any federated instance.

I think by default upvoted content on the front page (local, subscribed, and all) should disappear like in old reddit when voted upon, but when inside of a community it should stay up when voted upon and not disappear from the page.

can a way for this to work please be implemented? and if someone has an account on github could an issue for this possibly be opened?

In a recent thread asking for top five movies, my comment was added to another user’s post but weirdly they’re comment was VERY similar to mine. Then my exact same comment was added to ANOTHER user’s post. I’m now sure if this is an issue with the Memmy app or Lemmy I general, but the fact that my original comment was confused with another very similar comment is pretty sus. Why would this happen? Is it a coincidence?

I'm sharing this post and it's thread because I've run into this issue of not being able to find communities, users, posts, or comments on other instances, or the communities are missing a substantial number of comments and votes even after interacting with these posts and receiving new replies. Is this functionality standard and desirable behavior? Why or why not? I'm trying to understand how it's expected to work, because it's not very intuitive starting out to explore other instances sometimes.

Maybe we could brainstorm a way to make it more intuitive. What are the trade-offs involved? Why does it work they way it currently works? Is there a better way?

The main point that has been brought up is the fact that users from smaller, newer instances will not be able to access the backlog of posts and comments from older more established instances. I'd say a lot of the value of the platform comes from this foundation of posts sorted by votes on a link aggregator site like this. Should new users be encouraged to join the older, more established instances in order to have access to the most content?

SOLUTION FOUND - thank you

There is a community called Tarot on lemmy.world, and I want to subscribe to it. The url is https://lemmy.world/c/tarot. I've been to lemmy.world when not logged in and I can see it there. But when I try to find it from here, I can't. I tried putting !tarot@lemmy.world in the search and got "no results found". I've been told that "someone needs to search for it, for it to appear", but I have already tried to search for it, many times. What else needs to happen for me to be able to see and subscribe to this community?

Or do I just have to make a second account on lemmy.world?

This is just an idea, but I see that some instance prevent bots from bypassing the registration step by asking unexpected questions like "are you human?". Apparently this is the type of question that can easily discern a human answer from a chatGPT answer. So what if the admin of an instance changed the question asked for registration application every few days? Something like " What did you hit for break f4st? " would give bot proof applications and the answers would likely give the admin a good laugh. Not 100% effective of course, but would help for the time being.

Lets say that an instance doesn't allow downvotes called NoDownvotesInstance. That instance hosts a community called NoDownvotesCommunity.

Now, lets say someone on another instance that does allow downvotes places a downvote on a post made to NoDownvotesCommunity. Does NoDownvotesInstance federate that downvote out so that other instance with downvotes can see it, or does it just drop the downvote so that it goes no further?

Edit - @pe1uca@lemmy.pe1uca.dev has answered this, with evidence. Despite the highest upvoted reply suggesting otherwise, it appears as that instances with disabled downvotes do not federate downvotes on.

I have seen a lot of calls around Lemmy for more moderation tools. I have been working on Lemmy PowerShell module for a few weeks now, and I went ahead and released a preview version with multiple moderation tools now available. The module has the ability to perform the following tasks using a simple command line tool:

  • Search posts and comments
  • Remove a post
  • Remove a comment
  • Lock and unlock posts
  • Add and remove moderators
  • Create new posts and comments

You can get started now by installing the module through the PowerShell gallery.

Install-Module Lemmy-preview
Import-Module Lemmy-preview

If you are not familiar with PowerShell, I've include detailed instruction in the GitHub repo with lots of example. https://github.com/mdowst/Lemmy-PowerShell

If you run into any issues please let me know either here or by submitting an Issue to the repo.

Well I never had spam issues, until 0.18 forced captchas to be disabled. Thankfully the bots just seem to be signing up, not doing much yet. Using fake emails that never get verified.

So I threw together a little script. Just put this in a sh file, and create a cron job or systemd service to run it every 15 minutes or so. Use your favorite text edit tool to replace "thelemmyclub" with your instance name, or whatever you have your docker containers named. (Check docker ps). You'll also have to be able to run docker without sudo, so add your user to the docker group or put the cron job on root (if you do that make sure only root can access the file, for security)

Also if you set up manually without docker, well I'm sure you have the skills to adapt these commands appropriately.

First though run:

docker exec -it thelemmyclub_postgres_1 psql -U lemmy -h 127.0.0.1 -p 5432 -d lemmy -c "select * from local_user where id in (select local_user_id from email_verification where published < (NOW() - INTERVAL '60 minute'));"

This will list all users who haven't completed email verification, except those that are under an hour old. If you think these are all abandoned accounts and bots, carry on. It's always best to check before doing things to live databases...

Edit: thanks to input from @freeskier@centennialstate.social

The sh file you need:

#! /bin/bash
docker exec -it thelemmyclub_postgres_1 psql -U lemmy -h 127.0.0.1 -p 5432 -d lemmy -c "DELETE FROM person WHERE local = 'true' AND id IN (SELECT person_id FROM local_user WHERE id IN (SELECT local_user_id FROM email_verification WHERE published < (NOW() - INTERVAL '60 minute')));"

This will delete all users over an hour old who haven't completed email verification. (Only applies to accounts made after you enabled email verification, so older accounts are safe)

Hope this helps!

I mod a sports league community, and I was trying to put team logos in the description. But after the fourth one the editor would not upload any more. I tried saving and going back into the editor but it still wouldn't.

I was shrinking them down to 20x20 pixel png files, and I saved all the links to the ones I already uploaded so that if I can get this resolved I won't be re-uploading the same ones.

I was able to add more today, but again it stopped after a few. The 4 image refs in the editor was probably a coincidence vs the number of uploads, and I didn't count the number of uploads. So there is for sure some limiting happening, I'm just not sure what in specific. I wasn't able to add more using an incognito window either, so maybe it's a limit on uploads per day per IP.

Startrek.website purged their bot accounts a few days ago. I asked the admins how the did just in case it'd be useful for other admins.

Here's a link to their response (from @williams_482@startrek.website ):

https://startrek.website/comment/172094

Warning ... I make no claim that this is at all sound advice, and williams_482 themselves warn that you need to make sure you know what you're doing ... as it seems they ran some direct delete commands over their database.
