The terrorist action took place while dozens of people were celebrating the arrival of the New Year.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian drones killed 24 people and wounded 29 citizens in an attack on the civilian population in the town of Jorly, in Kherson region, during New Year celebrations.

Russia Will Prevail in Ukraine: President Putin

“Cruelty. Meanness. Cynicism. A normal person’s vocabulary is too poor to define the actions of this scum,” said Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president and current deputy chairman of the Security Council.

“Only the merciless language of revenge is suitable for this. Inevitable and swift in the course of our army’s offensive,” he said, adding that Russia’s response should affect both the “monstrous perpetrators of this attack” and their “various commanders.” “Enough ceremonies,” he urged.

Earlier, Kherson Governor Vladimir Saldo said the Ukrainian army carried out the attack using three aerial vehicles launched at a cafe and a hotel on the Black Sea coast, where civilians were celebrating the arrival of the New Year. One of the drones was carrying an incendiary mixture.

Among the 24 dead was a child, Saldo said, adding that many civilians were burned alive. Six minors were among the injured. Rescuers were unable to save more people because of the intensity of the fire, which could not be extinguished until early morning.

The Kherson governor said the Ukrainian terrorist attack was similar to the criminal action carried out against the Trade Unions House in Odesa in 2014, when Ukrainian neo-Nazis deliberately set fire to the building where citizens opposed to the coup d’etat and the policies of Kiev’s new authorities were hiding.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the actions of the Kiev regime show its “bestial nature,” as well as “neo-Nazi hatred, dehumanization growing at a geometric rate” and “mockery of the sacred.”

“We accuse all those who finance the Ukrainian terrorist bastards of this attack. We accuse them of the murder of children and the extermination of the civilian population. We accuse them of corrupting the Ukrainian statehood, turned into a killing machine,” she said.

Ukraine repeatedly carries out targeted attacks against the civilian population of Russia’s border regions. Drones and missiles from the Kiev regime strike civilian vehicles, homes, recreational areas, shopping centers and other civilian facilities.

Previously, Trump suggested letting the Treaty expire and creating a new one.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated that the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is unlikely to result in a new trade agreement that should be approved by Congress.

RELATED:

Canada and Mexico Strengthen Alliance Ahead of USMCA Review

She explained that businessmen would participate in the process and that the Mexican government would provide additional support if needed. Sheinbaum pointed out that the review will be technical, not a replacement of the existing treaty.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump had previously suggested letting the USMCA expire or creating a new agreement. Sheinbaum clarified that this possibility was not directly discussed in her meeting with him.

Trump requested coordination with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Sheinbaum, who were working alongside the Secretary of Commerce, the Trade Agreements Ambassador, and the Secretary of the Treasury.

Jamieson Greer, head of the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), testified before the U.S. Senate that the USMCA has been beneficial, although it requires improvements in some aspects considered strategic by Washington.

Sheinbaum highlighted the constant communication between Greer, the U.S. Secretaries of Commerce and the Treasury, and Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, to monitor the review of the trilateral trade agreement.

Mexican Banorte Economic Analysis team warned that Trump’s tariff policy could persist as a negotiating tool in a “challenging external environment” for Mexico during the USMCA review.

The financial group noted that trade integration with the U.S. is a differentiator that favors Mexico, thanks to the reconfiguration of production chains and the logistical advantage derived from geographic proximity.

Actinver Director of Analysis Enrique Covarrubias considered the USMCA review to be the most relevant economic event of 2026, with the possibility of extending its validity until 2046 through renewal.

On Dec. 19, Sheinbaum reiterated her optimism regarding the USMCA review, stating that Mexico is on the right track and the economy would remain stable during 2026.

The public hearing before the review of the USMCA, organized by the USTR, included participation from agricultural, business, and political groups, which reflects the diversity of interests involved in the Treaty.

The vessel was being escorted to a Finnish port and all 14 crew members has been taken into custody.

On Wednesday, Finnish National Police Commissioner Ilkka Koskimaki informed that his country detained the freighter Fitburg on suspicion of damaging undersea data cables in the Gulf of Finland.

The vessel was being escorted to a Finnish port and all 14 crew members has been taken into custody. A police spokesman said it was too early to determine whether the incident was accidental or intentional.

Officials said the Fitburg sails under the flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Finnish media reported that the ship’s owning company is registered in the Seychelles and maintains an office in Turkey.

The Finnish Coast Guard said telecommunications company Elisa alerted it shortly after 5 a.m. local time to a breach in its cable link between the Finnish capital Helsinki and the Estonian capital Tallinn.

Coast Guard Commander Mikko Simola said three vessels were initially considered possible suspects, with the Fitburg later emerging as the main suspect. The damage was detected in Estonia’s exclusive economic zone.

Finnish patrols later located the suspect vessel in Finland’s exclusive economic zone with its anchor chain lowered. The ship was instructed to raise its anchor and proceed toward the Finnish coast, which it did, Simola said. Authorities then ordered the vessel into Finnish territorial waters and took control of it.

Simola said Coast Guard helicopters sighted the vessel at around 7:30 a.m. local time. Officials boarded the ship by helicopter at about 11 a.m. local time and took control of the bridge and the vessel.

The Finnish government and state leadership were kept informed, while operational decisions were made by relevant civil servants and agencies. Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that Finland is prepared for a range of security contingencies and will respond accordingly.

Estonia’s Ministry of Justice and Digital Affairs said two cables between the two countries were disrupted – one owned by Elisa and another by Sweden’s Arelion. Estonian and Finnish prosecutors are exchanging information and considering whether to open a joint investigation, the ministry said.

Elisa said services in Finland and Estonia were not affected due to network backups, though some customers using direct connections via the cable may have experienced disruptions. The company said inspections of the damaged cable have yet to begin due to adverse weather conditions.

The historic step for EU’s poorest country comes amid political turmoil and fears of price hikes.

On Jan. 1, 2026, Bulgaria became the 21st member of the eurozone, a historic step for the European Union’s poorest country that comes amid enthusiasm from part of society, fears among others and a deep internal political crisis.

RELATED:

Bulgarian PM Zhelyazkov Resigns After Protests

Nineteen years after joining the EU, Bulgaria has officially abandoned its national currency, the lev, and adopted the euro in a transition affecting 6.3 million people.

“The euro is not just a currency, it is a symbol of belonging,” Dimitar Radev, governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, said in a message minutes before midnight.

Taking on the single currency means Bulgaria “is not on the periphery, but in a space of common rules, trust and responsibility. Because Bulgaria is Europe. And Europe is Bulgaria,” he said.

The change comes under a caretaker government, following the resignation of the Cabinet three weeks ago, without an approved budget and with the prospect of holding the eighth snap election in five years in late March.

This is the eurozone today – welcome Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

— Time for a European Federation -Yannis Karamitsios (@time_for_ef) January 1, 2026

Throughout January, Bulgarians will be able to pay in both leva and euros, although change will be given only in the new currency. From Jan. 1 through June 30, banks in the Balkan country will exchange lev banknotes and coins for euros free of charge at the fixed rate of 1 euro to 1.95583 leva.

According to the Bulgarian Banking Association, all accounts will be automatically converted to euros. Between 9 p.m. Tuesday and 1 a.m. Wednesday, card payment systems carried out the technical switch from the lev to the euro. Since Dec. 1, 2025, bank branches have been offering starter kits with euro coins featuring Bulgaria’s national design.

Economists agree that joining the eurozone represents the final step toward European integration. “The single currency reduces exchange-rate risks and transaction costs, which will benefit everyone who actively participates in the economy,” Stefan Rumenov said, while warning that the euro is not a magic solution.

“The euro opens doors and creates opportunities, but structural reforms, higher productivity and education are the factors that deliver real benefits. The euro is just a tool,” he stressed.

In fact, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev unsuccessfully sought to put eurozone entry to a referendum. In his New Year’s message, he referred to it as “the final milestone in Bulgaria’s integration into the EU.”

“I am convinced that eliminating our national currency should have been decided after consulting the people, but those in power did not want to listen to citizens,” he emphasized.

Bulgaria is saying goodbye to the lev and officially adopting the euro, but some citizens worry that shops will round up when changing currencies, making everything more expensive.

— Al Jazeera English (@AJEnglish) January 1, 2026

Preventing Abuses and Price Hikes

Among the population, the main concern is that businesses may take advantage of the changeover to raise prices covertly.

The euro law sets the fixed exchange rate and criminalizes any improper variation, while also requiring that rounding always be in favor of the customer. The greatest difficulties, however, are expected among elderly people, especially in rural and remote areas.

In the village of Darzhava, in central Bulgaria, home to about 60 people, all retirees, there is no ATM and no possibility of paying by card. “People will suffer confusion because most have never seen euro banknotes,” Mayor Ivan Todorov said.

“I’m afraid of getting confused, because 20 euros and 20 leva look very similar, even though their value is very different,” said Georgi Dimitrov, 76.

“Prices go up and our pensions stay the same,” lamented Zlatka Ivanova, 80, while Mariana Tsekova, 63, fears making mistakes when calculating the conversion.

Caretaker Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov said in early December that price monitoring had not so far detected speculative increases and promised continued oversight to protect consumers.

In the weeks before joining the eurozone, lines formed outside private currency exchange offices, despite losses due to less favorable rates. According to Georgi Stoyanov, the owner of one such office in Varna, many customers seek to avoid banks in order not to declare the origin of their cash savings.

Experts say these are people willing to accept losses in order to keep their money outside the banking system, in a monetary transition that mixes hope, distrust and old habits.

Blaze at Crans-Montana venue leaves about 100 people injured.

On Thursday, the Valais Cantonal Police confirmed that a fire at a crowded bar in the town of Crans-Montana caused dozens of deaths and left about 100 people injured, most of them critically.

RELATED:

Glacier Collapse Buries Swiss Village That Voted Against Climate Change Policies

Cantonal authorities shared the first verified information during a news conference about the tragedy, which occurred at a venue very popular with young people in the town. Crans-Montana is among Switzerland’s most popular ski resorts.

“As I speak, we have counted about 100 injured people, many of them seriously, as well as dozens of people who have presumably died,” said Frederic Gisler, commander of the Valais Cantonal Police.

“The priority is forensic medicine to help us identify the deceased,” said Valais Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud.

All evidence gathered so far has allowed authorities to rule out the hypothesis of an attack. Investigators determined that the explosion heard around 1:30 a.m. was caused by the fire. It is likely that several foreigners are among the many victims, as Crans-Montana is heavily visited by skiers during the year-end holiday period.

“Given the magnitude of this tragedy, it is understandable that we are only at the very beginning of the investigation and have not been able to identify all the victims, but at a resort as international as Crans, it is likely that there will be foreign victims,” Gisler said.

The injured were taken to several hospitals, with the most serious cases transferred to Sion Hospital, the capital of the canton of Valais. Operating rooms and the intensive care unit there are full, said cantonal health chief Mathias Reynard.

A support center has also been set up to provide psychological assistance to families and witnesses. Authorities declined to speculate on the cause of the fire while awaiting reliable information and did not answer questions about whether the venue complied with legal safety requirements.

According to residents, the bar, called Le Constellation, was located in a basement-like space accessed by a staircase, which may have made it difficult for victims to escape.

More than 10 helicopters, 40 ambulances and 150 people — including firefighters, rescue workers and other essential personnel — were mobilized in response to the tragedy.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva vowed to uphold social justice and defend the rights of all citizens as Brazil enters a new political cycle in 2026, in a year-end address to the nation.

Speaking just hours before the closure of 2025, the president outlined Brazil’s removal from the UN Hunger Map for the second time and the landmark income tax exemption for citizens earning up to R$ 5,000 monthly.

Lula also pointed to economic resilience in the face of elevated U.S. tariffs, the revitalization of the Minha Casa Minha Vida social housing program, and the expansion of the public healthcare system via the Agora Tem Especialistas initiative.

“A dignified home is a fundamental right,” Lula stated, linking housing policy to the massive São Francisco River diversion project, which he described as bringing water to millions in the drought-prone Northeast.

Estamos terminando 2025 com ótimas notícias nessa última semana, batendo recordes em cima de recordes:

🔹 Maior número de pessoas com carteira assinada (39,4 milhões)
🔹 Maior… pic.twitter.com/gvUas3tbS9

— Lula (@LulaOficial) December 31, 2025

Regarding housing, he noted that Minha Casa Minha Vida “has returned, now reaching the middle class, and the Reforma Casa Brasil program is also being launched. Because decent housing is a fundamental right that must be guaranteed. Through the São Francisco River Interbasin Transfer—the world’s largest water infrastructure project—the Brazilian government is bringing water to millions of families in the Northeast.”

The president credited the New Growth Acceleration Program (PAC) with helping Brazil achieve its lowest historical unemployment rate. He acknowledged, however, that violent crime remains a persistent national challenge, noting that federal police recently executed the largest-ever operation against organized crime, targeting “the highest levels” of criminal factions.

Concluding on a diplomatic note, Lula asserted that neither domestic crime nor trade tensions with the United States would deter Brazil’s commitment to global “dialogue and fraternity,” emphasizing that the country “does not shy away from the struggle.”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is launching a “wartime recruitment” campaign targeting gun rights advocates and military enthusiasts through social media and online influencers.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is preparing to launch a $100 million, year-long recruitment drive explicitly targeting gun rights advocates and military enthusiasts, according to an exclusive report by local media published Tuesday.

RELATED: U.S. Government Denied Due Process to Migrants Deported to El Salvador: Judge Boasberg

The initiative is part of what the agency internally calls a “wartime recruitment” strategy. Its plan is to saturate social media, enlist conservative and anti-immigration online influencers, and deploy hyper-targeted, geolocated advertising.

A 30-page internal document outlines a campaign designed to reach individuals based on their interests and locations. Ads will be directed toward people who have attended UFC matches or NASCAR races, listened to patriotic podcasts, or browsed for firearms and tactical gear.

The tactic relies heavily on platforms popular in conservative circles, such as Snapchat and Rumble, and employs geofencing technology. This allows ICE to send digital ads to the devices of anyone within a specific geographic area -such as a gun show, a tactical gear store, or a military base- during a set time window.

This hiring push follows a congressional move in July that tripled ICE’s enforcement and deportation budget to $30 billion. The Department of Homeland Security has already announced plans to expand ICE’s workforce of 20,000 by adding an estimated 10,000 officers.

The campaign aligns with President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, a policy defined by its racial bias since January. According to official year-end data posted by ICE on X, DHS “removed” over 622,000 migrants.

Cultural events took place across the island as well. In Santiago de Cuba province, artists dedicated songs, poems, and dances to the anniversary of the overthrow of U.S.-backed dictator Fulgencio Batista.

The action by the United Arab Emirates joins international efforts to guarantee humanitarian assistance in Gaza, where millions of people survive in extreme conditions. The legislation affirms that Algeria and its people are entitled to compensation for the material and moral damage inflicted during French colonial rule

Algeria’s parliament unanimously passed legislation on 24 December declaring France’s colonization of Algeria a crime, stating that “full and fair compensation for all material and moral damages” is an inalienable right of the Algerian state and people.

The law was adopted by Algeria’s lower house in Algiers, with lawmakers voting in favor of a bill explicitly assigning France “legal responsibility for its colonial past in Algeria and the tragedies it caused.”

The vote took place on Wednesday inside the Algerian parliament, with MPs marking the moment by standing in the chamber wearing national colors, chanting “long live Algeria,” and singing the national anthem before and after the vote.

This comes amid a prolonged diplomatic crisis between Algiers and Paris, which analysts describe as legally symbolic but politically significant as bilateral relations continue to deteriorate.

In the legislation, a range of acts defined as “crimes of French colonisation” were listed, including nuclear testing, extrajudicial killings, “physical and psychological torture,” systematic land seizure, and the plundering of resources, while rejecting claims that Algeria lacked political existence before 1830.

The law recalls the period of French rule between 1830 and 1962 and cites Algerian reports of 1.5 million deaths during the independence struggle, a figure rejected by French historians who estimate about 500,000 total deaths.

It also dictates that “full and fair compensation for all material and moral damages caused by French colonisation is an inalienable right of the Algerian state and people,” including restitution of archives, cultural property, human remains, and environmental remediation of nuclear test sites.

The legislation criminalizes the “glorification,” “justification,” or “apology for colonialism,” imposing prison sentences of five to 10 years and fines while extending responsibility to the media and digital platforms.

While Emmanuel Macron has previously described colonization as a “crime against humanity,” France declined to comment on what its Foreign Ministry described as “political debates taking place in foreign countries.”

The legislation marks a shift from earlier Algerian positions emphasizing historical “recognition” rather than formal demands for apologies and reparations.

In his traditional year-end message, the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, presented a review of 2025 this Wednesday, which he defined as “the year of the broadest and firmest consensus ever achieved in our republican history.”

During his address, the president highlighted the progress made in building National Power and the advancement of the Seven Transformations Plan as central pillars of the country’s political and social development.

RELATED:

14 Economic Sectors Drive the Venezuelan Growth Model

The Head of State emphasized that 2025 was a period of “victorious resistance,” marked by the strategic coordination among the various sectors of Venezuelan society. This historic consensus has allowed for the consolidation of a strong, profoundly democratic, and sovereign state.

“It has been a year of intense work, significant challenges, and above all, a collective fortitude that has astonished the world,” he stated.

One of the essential ideas of his message was the strengthening of National Power, understood as the integration of military power with popular power, as well as the union of economic power with scientific and technological power. The president emphasized that, in just one year, this concept has become a “tangible reality on the ground.” He also highlighted the role of spiritual and cultural power as a guiding principle of the Bolivarian transformative process.

In the realm of science and technology, the Bolivarian leader pointed out that Venezuela’s new Independence is cognitive in nature, positioning these fields as fundamental tools at the service of social well-being and the defense of national sovereignty. “This technological development, in conjunction with cultural power, constitutes the main support of the national consciousness that safeguards the future of the next generations,” he stated.

The President also praised the role of the Popular Consultations held during 2025, asserting that “we owe each Popular Consultation brilliant solutions and, most importantly, current and lasting social agreements.” These consultations, he noted, have been key to legitimizing the Plan of the Seven Transformations, which has become “the law of the present to shape the future.”

In this way the President reaffirmed the Bolivarian Government’s strategy toward the 2030 goal, based on citizen participation, popular unity, and the unwavering defense of national sovereignty. “When a people decides to walk together, nothing can stop them, nothing can defeat them,” he concluded.

The leader announced that Venezuela will close 2025 with a diversified and productive economy, definitively overcoming the rentier model of the 20th century. The Head of State emphasized that the 14 economic engines are advancing in a coordinated manner under a strategic vision that has allowed the country to produce what it consumes and export agricultural and marine products to international markets.

The president stressed that the growth rates achieved, even under conditions of blockade, confirm that Venezuela has overcome the siege imposed a decade ago. Finally, President Maduro asserted that the country now has greater preparation, experience, and unity to face new challenges, guaranteeing its sovereign progress toward the year 2030 with a fully consolidated National Power.

Venezuelan Defense Minister, General-in-Chief Vladimir Padrino López, described anti-drug trafficking operations as effective on Wednesday and backed President Nicolás Maduro, who characterized the national strategy as a “successful combat model.”

“We offer this successful model of popular-military-police unity to U.S. imperialism so that it can combat drug trafficking effectively, truly effectively,” Padrino López stated.

The Defense Minister specified that, since the enactment in 2012 of the Law for the Comprehensive Defense of Venezuelan Airspace, 430 aircraft linked to drug trafficking have been disabled.

“We have left 430 aircraft on the ground. And that is why our Commander-in-Chief is right when he says that we have our own successful model,” he emphasized.

The Vice President for Political Sovereignty, Security, and Peace affirmed that Venezuela “is not a key player in drug trafficking,” dismissing the nation’s impact on the global drug supply chain.

He commented that the four or five percent that “comes from Colombia into Venezuelan territory, that they intend to pass through here, there’s the answer.” He added that they combated Colombian drug trafficking groups operating on the border and destroyed 156 of their camps.

He emphasized that any aircraft linked to drug trafficking will be met with a response from the Armed Forces, because “this airspace and territory are defended and respected.”

Jamaican Prime Minister and President-in-Office of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Andrew Holness, reaffirmed the region’s commitment to peace, sovereignty, and respect for international law, amidst growing geopolitical tension and US pressure against Venezuela.

In his year-end address, Holness emphasized the need for unity and cohesion in the face of challenges affecting the security and stability of the Caribbean.

RELATED:

CELAC Prepares for 11th Anniversary of Zone of Peace in the Face of US Aggression

“We maintain a firm stance against transnational organized crime networks and the impact of drugs, weapons, and human trafficking on the security of our region. However, we recognize that member states may, at times, express different national perspectives,” Holness noted.

In this way, the pro tempore president of CARICOM acknowledged the diversity of positions within the regional bloc regarding the US escalation against Venezuela, openly supported by Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana, while other members of the Caribbean organization have been critical and warned that a conflict would have consequences for the entire region.

The Caribbean leader emphasized that CARICOM remains firm in its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all its member states, a principle that has gained relevance amidst increasing external pressures. “At this moment in our history, we also remember that the Caribbean must navigate a rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape. The current international environment demands that our region act with clarity, cohesion, and strategic discipline,” he stated.

No one is surprised by this, it only further underscores the lies told by the Trinidad and Tobago government, under Kamla Persad-Bissessar.

FYI: the US Department of War contacts confirms the radar installed in Trinidad and Tobago can be used in US conflict with Venezuela: https://t.co/EXliGaVhpx

— Tamanisha J John (@TamanishaJohn) December 8, 2025

Holness stressed that, despite national differences, the Caribbean must base its responses on shared principles: “Respect for sovereignty, adherence to international law, peaceful dialogue, and the resolution of differences through dialogue and mutual respect.” In that regard, she warned that external conflicts can have direct repercussions on the economies, security, and diplomatic relations of the region’s countries.

CARICOM Secretary-General Carla Barnett recently urged unity among the organization’s 15 members in the face of what she described as “unprecedented adverse geopolitical winds” threatening regional stability. CARICOM members are Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Beyond the geopolitical challenges, Holness highlighted key achievements of regional integration by 2025, including the historic implementation, as of October 1, of the full free movement of people between Barbados, Belize, Dominica, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. “This allows member states that wish to do so to deepen cooperation, while keeping the door open for others to participate when they are ready,” he explained.

The Jamaican Prime Minister highlighted CARICOM’s coordinated response to Hurricane Melissa, which struck several Caribbean countries in October. “The extraordinary show of support at the regional, international, and individual levels confirmed a simple truth about our community: as members of the Caribbean family, we are never alone,” he said.

— teleSUR TV (@teleSURtv) December 31, 2025

Holness concluded his message with a call to uphold the community’s founding values: “In times of uncertainty, our commitment to diplomacy, cooperation, and mutual respect will remain essential to safeguarding the peace, development, and independence of member states.” He also expressed his gratitude for having chaired CARICOM during the second half of 2025, highlighting the unity and shared purpose that guided the bloc’s actions during the year.

This declaration reinforces Caricom’s position as a regional actor committed to non-interference, the peaceful settlement of disputes, and the collective defense of Caribbean interests in an increasingly complex international scenario.

By Rick Arnold  –  Dec 22, 2025

The question should be easy enough for Canada’s federal government to answer: Has Canada provided military intelligence since September 2025 to U.S. forces delivering lethal air strikes on small boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific that have killed dozens of civilians? In recent weeks, Canadian organizations and individuals have written to their MPs and to ministers, including Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, asking this same question. The silence from Parliament Hill has been resounding.

Anand’s only comment related to the killings and Canada’s possible complicity came at the end of the recent meeting of G7 foreign ministers. As reported Nov. 12 by The Hill Times, Anand said, “I would say it is within the purview of U.S. authorities to make that determination.” This was a blow to Canada’s international human rights reputation, especially after the United Kingdom had publicly declared that these killings were extrajudicial and it would stop sharing intelligence with U.S. forces immediately.

Canada has been attempting ‘smoke and mirrors’ with its Department of National  Defence arguing that Canadian intel only goes to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). However the U.S.CG is under the direct command of the U.S. Department of War so any intel the U.S.CG gathers is being shared more widely. But now, in the latest escalation Dec. 10, it was the U.S.CG itself that led the seizure of an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela. This oil tanker seizure has been denounced internationally and leaves Canada with nowhere to hide in arguing that Canadian intel is not being used for illegal U.S. actions in the Caribbean.

While attention in the United States has focused on Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth in one of the attacks, the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and other U.N. experts have warned that the air strikes violate international human rights law and must stop. The presidents of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia have spoken in opposition to the killings and called for their cessation. France’s foreign minister said the U.S. strikes violated international law. Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) reaffirmed the principle of maintaining the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace.

Strikes on the small boats are part of a large military build-up by the United States in the Caribbean and come during a long campaign of threats and sanctions against the government of President Nicolás Maduro that seem intended to induce “regime change.” Unsubstantiated allegations of his government’s involvement in drug-trafficking are akin to the false “weapons of mass destruction” story used by the United States to justify its 2003 invasion of Iraq.

How did Canada get into this mess? In October 2010, Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the U.S. that built on a 2006 Canadian initiative called Operation Caribbe. After the signing of the 2010 MOU, the Canadian government’s website stated that Operation Caribbe was now to contribute “to U.S.-led enhanced counter-narcotics operations in the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific Ocean” with Royal Canadian Navy warships and Royal Canadian Airforce aircraft deployed to “find and track” vessels “of interest” for “interception” by the U.S.

While international law allows for the interdiction of vessels if they are suspected of carrying drugs, the Trump administration’s readiness to treat the Caribbean and eastern Pacific like a war-zone and to disregard international law by not inspecting the boats or arresting their crews for subsequent trial, puts a spotlight on Canada’s military collaboration and potential complicity in these U.S kill operations.

An investigation by Project Ploughshares confirmed that at least two of the early U.S. attacks on small craft “relied on advanced electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) sensor systems built in Hamilton, Ontario, by L3Harris WESCAM,” likely mounted on a MQ-9 Reaper drone. “These sensors, sold in large volumes to the U.S. government, are designed to surveil below aircraft, identify potential targets, and coordinate airstrikes with precision.” Canadian weapons components and technology have been detected in other theatres of war despite Canada’s promises that this had been stopped. Ottawa should see to it that all future sales to the U.S. fully comply with the Arms Trade Treaty so they are no longer used in U.S. military operations leading to human rights violations and breaches of international law.

US Alleges Unverified Land Strikes in Venezuela Amid Rising Civilian Deaths in SOUTHCOM Killing Operation (+Primazol)

Canada should follow the lead of the United Kingdom and not contribute intelligence to U.S operations in the Caribbean. It should put Canadian participation in Operation CARIBBE on hold, so long as extrajudicial high seas killings and illegal seizures of vessels are being carried out by U.S. forces under orders from the Trump administration.

Ottawa should break its silence now and speak out against the unlawful attacks and extrajudicial killings of civilians by U.S. military forces in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. By doing so Canada would join the international chorus of countries condemning these unlawful actions while also calling on the United States government to cease further attacks.

The United States is experiencing its largest measles outbreak in more than three decades in 2025, surpassing 2,000 cases annually for the first time since the early 1990s, according to official figures from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The outbreaks are occurring amidst the administration of Trump’s anti-vaccine Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has downplayed the risks of the disease and spread misleading claims about the vaccine, while suggesting alternatives lacking scientific evidence.

RELATED:

Measles Cases Continue To Increase in the US.

As of December 23, health authorities had recorded 2,012 cases nationwide, distributed across 44 jurisdictions, reflecting a sustained spread of the disease. Of the total, 24 cases were among foreign nationals visiting the United States.

The surge in infections is occurring within the context of prolonged outbreaks that could have international repercussions. Experts warn that if transmission is not controlled by the end of January 2026, the United States could lose its “measles elimination” status, a global recognition the country has held for decades.

The decision to vaccinate is a personal one. Individuals should speak to their healthcare provider on the risks and… pic.twitter.com/W2oToklUAm

— CDC (@CDCgov) December 18, 2025

The CDC detailed that 87% of the cases registered this year are linked to 50 active outbreaks, a figure significantly higher than in 2024, when 16 outbreaks were reported and just under 70% of infections were concentrated in specific clusters. Furthermore, nearly 93% of those infected were unvaccinated or had no record of their immunization status.

So far in 2025, authorities have confirmed three deaths associated with the disease, a figure that reinforces the medical community’s concern about the reemergence of a virus that was considered under control.

Texas leads the list of the hardest-hit states, with 803 cases, followed by Arizona with 187, and South Carolina, where 156 infections were recorded. In South Carolina, an outbreak that began in October triggered a new wave of infections: more than a hundred people fell ill, and hundreds had to quarantine to curb the spread.

Estados Unidos registró 1.618 casos de sarampión en lo que va del año, la cifra más alta reportada desde 1992.https://t.co/M3O5UrP6fz

South Carolina’s state epidemiologist, Linda Bell, warned that transmission remains active and could continue for several more weeks. “We are facing ongoing transmission that we anticipate will continue for many more weeks, at least in our state,” he said.

The increase in cases coincides with the administration of Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been criticized for downplaying the risks of measles and for spreading misleading messages about vaccination by promoting alternatives without scientific backing.

Given this situation, the CDC insists that vaccination is the primary tool for containing outbreaks and preventing the United States from losing its international recognition as a measles-free country, a status that is now seriously threatened.

The governments of Mali and Burkina Faso announced the implementation of immigration restrictions for US citizens in direct response to the White House’s exclusionary policies. Burkinabe Foreign Minister Karamako Jean-Marie Traoré confirmed the application of measures equivalent to those adopted by the administration of Donald Trump, who in mid-March banned entry to the United States for citizens of several African nations.

The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed that the Malian state will demand the same requirements and conditions that Washington imposes on its citizens, based on the principle of international reciprocity.

Sahel States Consolidate Sovereign Integration at Historic Bamako Summit

Authorities in Bamako and Ouagadougou stated that these actions respond to the need to defend national dignity against unilateral decisions that criminalize the populations of the continent.

The measure sets a precedent in the region by applying symmetrical restrictions to a Western power, consolidating a stance of sovereignty in the face of migratory and political pressures exerted by Washington as 2025 draws to a close.

The firm response of Mali and Burkina Faso to Donald Trump’s travel ban symbolizes a paradigm shift in power relations. By applying the principle of reciprocity, the Sahel Alliance states are challenging the historical diplomatic asymmetry and rejecting the discriminatory treatment that Washington is attempting to normalize against African peoples.

This sovereign stance is framed within a process of political decolonization where these nations prioritize regional unity and the diversification of their strategic alliances, moving away from French postcolonial tutelage and US influence to strengthen their own autonomy.

The decision to restrict entry to US citizens reflects the will for social and political transformation of governments seeking to protect their integrity against external sanctions and blockades, being an act of justice in the face of the exclusionary policies of imperialism that, under the pretext of national security, seeks to punish countries that decide to chart an independent and sovereign path for their development.

Independent UN experts recently condemned the partial maritime blockade imposed by the United States against Venezuela, warning that it is a serious violation of international law, the UN Charter, and human rights.

In an official statement, experts warned that Washington’s decision to block all oil tankers entering or leaving Venezuela, along with its deployment of significant military forces in the Caribbean, constitutes a prohibited use of armed force against a sovereign state.

The statement also says the blockade comes after the unilateral designation by the United States in Nov. 2025 of Venezuelan government officials, including President Nicolás Maduro, as part of an alleged “foreign terrorist organization” called the “Cartel of the Suns”—an entity whose existence, according to experts, has not been proven.

The statement also includes accusations that US forces committed arbitrary killings of at least 107 people allegedly linked to maritime drug trafficking, in the context of some 30 attacks on civilian vessels since Sept. 2025.

Two years into Javier Milei’s presidency, Argentina has become a living laboratory for a radical reshaping of the economy and the public sphere.

RELATED:
Argentinean Deputies Approve Milei’s Adjustment Budget for 2026

What started as a bold, anti-establishment campaign quickly evolved into a systematic reordering of how the state interacts with society, one that, in practice, has moved from reform rhetoric to reusable tools of market-led governance.

A closer look reveals a pattern: sweeping changes to public institutions, a government that leans on decrees to push its agenda, and a social safety net strained to its limits.

Institutional Dismantling: The Ley Bases and Rule by Decree

Milei’s governing strategy blends aggressive legislative reform with a willingness to bypass Congress. The centerpiece is what supporters call the Ley Bases (Law 27,742), a broad package that recalibrates the state’s role in the economy.

When opposition lawmakers slowed (or obstructed) the timetable, Milei leaned on Necessity and Urgency Decrees (DNUs) to press ahead. By late 2025, dozens of DNUs had become a common tool to enact policy without the normal trial of democratic deliberation.

Analysts describe this pattern as a shift from a norm-based democracy toward a governance style that relies more on executive fiat and market-oriented priorities, an approach that echoes liberalized frameworks in which capital shapes policy outcomes more directly.

Critics warn that the cumulative effect is a narrowing of legislative debate and a reduction in the checks and balances designed to protect vulnerable groups..

The “Caste” Narrative vs. Ethical Erosion

Milei campaigned on purifying the political life of a perceived “caste” of elites. Yet in these first two years, ethical controversies have dogged the administration. Notable episodes include:

  • Institutional corruption: Karina Milei, the president’s sister and General Secretary, faced bribery allegations connected to the National Disability Agency.
  • Financial missteps: In 2025, the president backed the Libra cryptocurrency, which collapsed quickly and drew broad condemnation as a scam.
  • Allegations of ties to crime: Key ally José Luis Espert resigned amid accusations of links to drug trafficking.

These incidents have complicated the government’s “clean hands” rhetoric and fed a broader narrative that moral authority is unevenly distributed inside power circles.

The Social Cost of “Shock Therapy”: Pensions and Disability Under Fire

Under a rhetoric of Zero Deficit, Milei’s team has pursued what they frame as prudent, fiscally sane choices. In practice, that has translated into what critics call a “Chainsaw” approach to public spending and a “Blender” approach to value, vital social protections being trimmed or redefined in fiscal terms.

Perhaps the starkest example is the closure of the National Disability Agency (ANDIS) at the end of 2025. Officials framed the move as a crackdown on corruption, but it represents a withdrawal from a core public responsibility: protecting the most vulnerable.

Looking ahead, the administration signaled that hundreds of thousands of disability beneficiaries could lose payments in 2026 as eligibility criteria tighten to reflect budget metrics rather than lived need.

Contracting out disability management to an already strained Ministry of Health risks further delays in access to healthcare and essential services, pushing families into financial and logistical limbo.

The impact on older Argentines has been severe, even as the administration touts a supposed recovery. Protests followed vetoes on crucial funding for vulnerable populations, highlighting a disconnect between celebratory macroeconomic headlines and ground-level hardship.

Critics argue that labeling social benefits as potential fraud is a pretext for withdrawing support, masking a policy direction that undermines human dignity.

The result, many say, is a “lost social wage” for workers and retirees, services and safeguards that once buffered households from economic shocks are eroding while promises of trickle-down investment remain unfulfilled.

Labor Adjustments and the Privatization of Life

Argentina’s labor framework has seen a marked tilt toward contractual flexibility, with implications for job security and long-term social costs. The Ley Bases revises employer liability and simplifies dismissals, shifting risk toward workers.

Key policy shifts include:

  • Amnesty for informality: The law allows a “regularization” window with heavy waivers of decades of social security debts, effectively forgiving past noncompliance at the expense of the national social security fund.
  • Longer probation periods: The duration of probation stretches from three months to six months, and up to a year for micro-businesses, during which firing can occur without severance.
  • Independent Collaborator status: A new category enables a worker to hire up to three others under a commercial contract, stripping those workers of paid leave, workers’ compensation, and collective bargaining rights.
  • Severance fund approach: Replacing traditional seniority-based severance with a monthly fund reduces the cost of firing, incentivizing employer flexibility over worker protections.

Water: From Human Right to Corporate Asset

AySA, the public water utility, stands as a visible milestone of the privatization pivot. The regulatory framework now allows disconnections after 60 days of non-payment and ties tariffs to a concept called Economic-Financial Equilibrium, guaranteeing a return for private operators.

The state’s obligation to expand water networks, especially in less profitable urban areas, appears diminished, raising concerns about universal access to a basic necessity.

Infrastructure policy has reframed water as a market good rather than a universal public utility, raising alarms about affordability and equity for the most vulnerable residents.

Repression and Corruption: The Iron Fist and the Hidden Caste

To sustain this restructuring, the Milei administration has leaned into strong-arm tactics against dissent while grappling with its own corruption questions. Key dynamics include:

  • Criminalization of dissent: The government has employed a range of measures intended to curb protests, including police-led enforcement that critics call heavy-handed and indiscriminate.
  • Anti-protest norms in labor reform: Provisions tightening employment protections for protesters allow immediate dismissal without severance, chilling collective action.
  • Violent incidents and police conduct: Notable cases, such as the injury of photojournalist Pablo Grillo during a protest, have underscored concerns about state violence.
  • Corporate-friendly “caste” politics: Despite anti-caste rhetoric, the administration’s inner circle has faced scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest and policy favors for multinational interests.

Strategic Extractivism and Institutionalized Inequality

The Milei administration has fused strategic extractivism with water diplomacy, signaling a broader shift toward resource-centric governance.

On one front, the Incentive Regime for Large Investments (RIGI) invites multinational mining and energy firms to repatriate profits rapidly, a move some observers call “territorial surrender” to capital.

On the other front, Mekorot’s proposal to take over water management, framed as a step toward efficiency, sparks concerns about prioritizing industrial needs over local households and human consumption.

As Milei enters the second year, the contrast between headline macro indicators, fiscal surpluses, and falling inflation, and lived social realities is stark.

Critics say the social contract is fraying: a watchdog state is retreating, and targeted aid becomes the default tool for addressing inequality.

The result is a more stratified society where rights increasingly hinge on income and access to private capital.

The Bottom Line

Two years into Milei’s experiment, Argentina demonstrates a pivot from a protective state toward a market-discipline regime.

The most visible symbols (ANDIS’s closure, privatization of water, and a labor framework that emphasizes flexibility over security) signal a broader reorientation: rights that once depended on universal guarantees are now articulated as contingent, and social welfare is recalibrated to reflect fiscal metrics rather than human need.

From the perspective of social justice and democratic accountability, the question remains urgent: can Argentina sustain macroeconomic gains while preserving the social protections that safeguard dignity and ensure basic human rights?

Temperatures have reached 96.8 °F in Santiago, exceeding historical averages.

On Wednesday, the Chilean National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) reported that the country is closing 2025 with a record-breaking heat wave in its central region, which set a red alert for extreme risk of forest fires.

The Metropolitan, Valparaiso, Maule, O’Higgins, and Ñuble regions are under red alert, while La Araucania is under a preventative alert. Chilean President Gabriel Boric called for responsible behavior during the end-of-year holidays.

Temperatures are exceeding historical averages and reaching 96.8 °F in Santiago, the hottest December 31st on record. Dry conditions and winds are also fueling the rapid spread of fire in nine active blazes nationwide.

In the Metropolitan Region, the fire in the Las Condes commune has consumed more than 23 square kilometers, burned 800 hectares of endemic species, and affected 200 meters of urban areas, which generates extreme concern.

The text reads, “At least two Mexican tourists died in Chile, while seven others remain missing after being caught in a snowstorm and strong gusts of wind while hiking on the glaciers of Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia.”

While more than 20 fires have been brought under control and eight extinguished, the risk remains high. Ground crews, air support, and public-private coordination are being deployed to address emergencies in extreme weather conditions.

The Chilean Meteorological Directorate forecasts that high temperatures will continue until January 3. However, the National Forestry Corporation (CONAF) reports that fires have increased in frequency and intensity since 2010.

Experts attribute this scenario to climate change, a prolonged drought of more than a decade, and the expansion of the urban-rural interface, where combustible vegetation is mixed with buildings, which increases vulnerability.
