Right-wing President Paz reverses 2023 rupture over Gaza war.

On Tuesday, Bolivian President Rodrigo Paz restored diplomatic relations with Israel, which had been severed in 2023 as a result of Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip.

Bolivian Foreign Affairs Minister Fernando Aramayo and Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Gideon Sa’ar formalized the restoration of relations with the signing of an agreement at the Israeli ambassador’s residence in Washington.

Both countries agreed to a “full restoration of relations” and the upcoming appointment of ambassadors to their respective capitals, Sa’ar said during the ceremony.

“Today we put an end to a long and unnecessary chapter of separation between our two sister nations,” Sa’ar added, noting that since 2009, except for a brief period between 2019 and 2023, the two countries had not maintained relations.

"We have a common enemy and we need to face it."

Aramayo, for his part, said the new Bolivian government is “aware” of the challenges ahead and that, to confront them, it “needs the right friends,” referring to Israel. He also encouraged Israelis to visit Bolivia, which no longer requires them to obtain a visa.

In October 2023, then-President Luis Arce broke relations with Israel, calling the military offensive on Gaza “aggressive and disproportionate,” and repeatedly expressed support for the Palestinian cause.

Rodrigo Paz, who took office on Nov. 8 and ended 20 years of leftist governments in Bolivia, has said he will prioritize international relations with countries “that have democracy as a principle.” In October, a day after Paz was elected president in the second round, Minister Sa’ar spoke with him by phone and conveyed Israel’s desire to open a “new chapter” and “fully renew” diplomatic relations.

In early December, the Paz administration lifted the visa requirement for Israeli visitors, a rule established in 2014 during the government of Evo Morales (2006–2019), who considered Israel a “terrorist state” because of its actions in Gaza.

People are outraged by the awarding of the Peace Prize to someone who calls for political violence in Venezuela.

On a chilly Tuesday afternoon, intense demonstrations took place in front of the Nobel Institute in Oslo, where the Peace Prize is awarded each year. Protesters gathered to reject the decision to award the prize to Maria Corina Machado, an emblematic figure of the Venezuelan far right and a key ally in the United States’ pressure campaign against the Bolivarian Revolution.

In front of the building, activists from various countries denounced what they consider a blatant contradiction of the spirit of the prize. A spokesperson for international solidarity organizations told teleSUR:

“Machado does not represent peace. She represents military aggression, imperialism, and interventionism. This prize is illegitimate in the context of the expansion of Western wars and military operations.”

The awarding of the prize has generated widespread debate within Norway itself. Although there is awareness in Norway of the Venezuelan context and the role of Bolivarian social movements, organizations denounce that public opinion is heavily influenced by U.S. media propaganda.

The text reads, “Norway is taking to the streets to protest the 2025 Nobel Prize for Maria Corina Machado. It will go down in history as the most blatant fraud and swindle ever. What the Venezuelan right wing has achieved is the worst. A Nobel Prize of blood.”

The decision also caused tensions within the Norwegian government, led by the Social Democrats, since the official guests at the ceremony are mostly from right-wing parties. The controversy exposes an internal clash between Norway’s traditional peace diplomacy and its growing alignment with Washington’s geopolitical positions.

On the morning of the same day, several civil organizations announced that they will request the cancellation of the award, resorting to legal mechanisms available in Sweden.

Protesters argue that Machado does not comply with Alfred Nobel’s original will, which stipulates that the prize be awarded to those who have made outstanding contributions to fraternity between nations, the reduction or abolition of standing armies, and the promotion of peace processes.

The protest in Oslo encapsulates an outrage that has spread to solidarity movements, pacifist platforms, and social sectors in various countries, who see this award as an endorsement of figures who have promoted sanctions, blockades, calls for military intervention, and political violence in Venezuela.

Social security represents more than 40% of France’s overall public sector spending.

On Tuesday, the French National Assembly approved the 2026 social security budget bill, with 247 votes in favor and 234 against.

Macron Reinstates Voluntary Military Service for Young Adults in France

The social security budget comprises two main components: revenues and expenditures. On Dec. 5, the Lower House adopted the taxation measures intended to finance welfare, health and pension spending. The expenditure section was examined from 4 p.m. on Tuesday and subsequently approved by the National Assembly.

The Assembly’s endorsement marks only one step in the legislative process, as the text will now go to the Senate before coming back to the lower house for final adoption.

Social security represents more than 40 percent of France’s overall public sector spending. The government aims to reduce the budget deficit – already one of the largest in the eurozone – to 5 percent of GDP next year. France’s overall public sector budget for 2026 is scheduled for adoption by the National Assembly before Dec. 31.

Tuesday’s bill passed by a narrow margin of 13 votes, underscoring deep divisions within the National Assembly and the government’s fragile position, political analysts said.

Since President Emmanuel Macron lost his parliamentary majority in a snap election last year, no political bloc has been able to advance legislation easily.

Budget disputes have intensified, fueling political instability that has already brought down three governments. A disagreement over last year’s budget led to the fall of Michel Barnier’s cabinet in a no-confidence vote.

Among the priority areas are artificial intelligence, quantum physics and cybersecurity, and life sciences.

On Tuesday, the Canadian government pledged to invest 1.7 billion Canadian dollars (US$1.23 billion) over the next 12 years to attract more than 1,000 of the world’s top researchers to the country.

The Canada Global Impact+ Research Talent Initiative will focus on research areas critical to Canada’s sovereignty, resilience and long-term prosperity. It will cover advanced digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence, quantum and cybersecurity, and biotechnology and life sciences in the health sector.

The priorities will also include clean technologies, environment and climate resilience, food and water security, manufacturing and advanced materials, and defense and dual-use technologies. Research that cuts across multiple priority areas is also eligible, the release added.

This initiative represents one of the largest recruitment programs of its kind globally, uniquely designed to secure top research talent at exceptional speed and flexibility. These features will ensure Canada remains at the forefront of scientific innovation.

“As other countries constrain academic freedoms and undermine cutting-edge research, Canada is investing in, and doubling down on, science,” said Melanie Joly, Canada’s Minister of Industry.

Her comments are widely seen as a reference to the environment for science and immigration in the United States, marked by President Donald Trump’s policies that created uncertainty for international researchers, including travel bans, increased difficulties in obtaining visas, and a de-emphasis on scientific fields such as climate change.

Analysts said Canada aims to directly enhance its competitiveness in core industries and reduce its technological dependence on its southern neighbor. Canada faces a historic opportunity to attract world-leading researchers at a pivotal time for global innovation, said the release.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro signed a decree on Tuesday establishing the Unified Protocol for Non-Oil Exports, a measure designed to eliminate bureaucratic obstacles and streamline international trade, prioritizing strategic areas such as agriculture, fishing, and communal production, in line with the government’s push to diversify the economy away from oil.

The decree was formally handed to Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, who will oversee its rollout.

The announcement came during a meeting of the National Council for Productive Economy, where Foreign Trade Minister Coromoto Godoy presented the new guidelines aimed at strengthening an efficient state apparatus to support the productive sector.

President Maduro called the protocol a “fundamental step” toward building a more agile economic state and urged its full implementation before April 1, 2026. “The time has come to take a giant step,” he said, arguing there is “no reason” for Venezuela not to have a more effective economic system free from bureaucracy and corruption.

Venezuela’s Steady Growth

President Maduro further highlighted economic gains reported in 2025, including 29 percent growth in the pharmaceutical sector, a three-month supply of guaranteed medicines, and the fact that more than 90 percent of the country’s food is produced domestically.

He also noted an 18.6 percent increase in oil output and projected more than 3 million foreign tourists this year.

The president said Venezuela is on track to close 2025 with nearly 9 percent economic growth—figures echoed by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), which identified Venezuela as the fastest-growing economy in South America, with a 6 percent GDP expansion.

Venezuela has now logged 18 consecutive quarters of economic growth.

The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Felix Tshisekedi, accused Rwanda of breaching the commitments outlined in the December 4 Washington peace agreements.

Speaking before Parliament in Kinshasa, Tshisekedi said Rwandan forces launched attacks with heavy weapons from Bugarama in southwestern Rwanda, causing significant human and material losses.

He accused Kigali of deliberately violating the ceasefire and refusing to withdraw troops from Congolese territory, in violation of the agreements mediated by the United States and Qatar.

RELATED: DRC and Rwanda Launch UN-Backed Refugee Repatriation Amid Ongoing Tensions

Tshisekedi emphasized that the DRC remains committed to diplomacy while defending its sovereignty and protecting its citizens. He described the ongoing clashes not as a civil war or internal dispute, but as an “aggression war” over strategic territories and critical mineral resources.

“Let no one be mistaken: this is not a local conflict or a simple rebellion. It is a war of aggression aimed at challenging our sovereignty over a territory rich in critical minerals with vital economic potential for our nation,” he said.

What’s Behind Washington’s Mediation

Trump has stated that the peace deal would open the door for U.S. access to critical minerals in both countries, highlighting the mineral-rich eastern DRC, which has been devastated by violence but contains essential resources for electric vehicle technologies.

This move is part of a broader pattern in which the former Republican president has secured opportunities for U.S. companies to profit from the extraction of rare minerals, including projects in Ukraine.

Fighting Escalates

Fighting with the Rwanda-backed March 23 Movement (M23) has intensified over the past week. Rebels seized the town of Luvungi in South Kivu, near the Burundi border, forcing residents to flee to Sange, 30 kilometers away. At least 36 people were reported killed during the attacks.

The Red Cross reported that 21 injured individuals, including seven minors, were transferred to Uvira General Reference Hospital. Since 1998, eastern DRC has endured persistent conflict fueled by rebel groups and government forces, despite the presence of the UN peacekeeping mission MONUSCO.

The peace accords also call for the dismantling of foreign militias, including the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), composed of Hutu members involved in the 1994 genocide, as well as the establishment of a joint security mechanism and a regional economic integration framework.

U.S. Civil Rights organizations demand legal justification for the Trump administration’s “South Spear” operations in the Caribbean, linked to 87 deaths and regional tensions.

Civil rights organizations in the United States filed a federal lawsuit on Tuesday, December 9, demanding the Trump administration disclose the secret legal memo used to justify a series of deadly military strikes in the Caribbean Sea, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 87 people since September 2025 under the alleged banner of combating “narco-terrorism.”

RELATED: Venezuela: US Anti-Drug Operation in the Caribbean, Farce or Regime Change Strategy?

The legal action was initiated by the Center for Constitutional Rights, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), and its New York branch (NYCLU) in the Southern District Court of New York, following the executive branch’s refusal to respond to a request made under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

The groups seek to force the release of an opinion from the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) that reportedly “apparently blesses the current attacks as legal acts in a supposed ‘armed conflict’ with unspecified ‘drug cartels’.”

Escalating Operations and Regional Tension

Since September 2, the Trump administration has conducted at least 22 attacks against vessels in international Caribbean waters, justifying these actions under the premise of combating drug terrorism.

These operations are part of a military deployment known as Operation “Southern Lance”, a military deployment that has increased U.S. forces near Venezuela’s maritime border, creating significant diplomatic tension between the two nations.

The U.S. administration has refused to publicly release the OLC memo, though it granted restricted access to some Congressional members in November. “To claim they are legal without providing evidence shows Trump’s disdain for basic transparency, Human Rights, and the rule of law”, stated representatives of the plaintiffs.

Human Rights Allegations and International Concern

This legal battle coincides with a petition filed with the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights by the family of Alejandro Carranza Medina, a Colombian fisherman killed in a September 15th in one of these bombardments. Their lawyer, Dan Kovalik, called the attack an extrajudicial execution and part of a “systematic practice of state terrorism.”

Regional leaders, as Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Colombian President Gustavo Petro, have energetically condemned the U.S. escalation of aggression, reaffirming South America and the Caribbeamm as a “zone of peace.” For his part, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro classified the U.S. military deployment as an attempt to destabilize Venezuela and plunder its resources.

Since the cessation of hostilities came into effect, the Governmental Information Office in Gaza meticulously documented 738 distinct violations by Israeli forces between October 10 and December 8, 2025. Photo: EFE.

Gaza authorities have accused Israel of systematically violating a two-month-old ceasefire, killing at least 377 Palestinian civilians, mostly women and children, and severely restricted the flow of lifesaving humanitarian aid into the besieged enclave.

Gaza authorities have issued a damning report, denouncing that Israel has systematically violated the ceasefire agreement signed with the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas, signed on last October.

RELATED: Israel Redefines its Military Position in Gaza as a New Internal Frontier

In the 60 days since the truce took effect, Israeli forces have committed 738 documented violations, resulting in the deaths of 377 civilians, mostly women, children, and the elderly people; along with illegal detentions, deliberate destruction, and severe obstruction of humanitarian aid.

The Governmental Information Office in Gaza‘s report -covering the period from October 10 to December 8, 2025- details a brutal campaign that extends far beyond isolated incidents. The violations include 205 direct shooting attacks on civilians, 37 incursions by military vehicles into inhabited areas, and 358 bombardments targeting residential homes. A further 138 assaults led to the destruction of civilian buildings and infrastructure.

These continuous aggressive actions during the 60-day period have left 980 people wounded -many of them severe, requiring urgent medical attention in an already overwhelmed healthcare system-, and included 43 cases of illegal detention without due process, in clear contravention of international legal standards, alongside illegal annexation of territories and deliberate obstruction of humanitarian aid.

The ceasefire agreement had explicitly stipulated that Israeli forces withdraw to the designated “yellow line”, a buffer zone historically enforced to separate and limit civilian access with the objective of provide a modicum of security for Gaza’s inhabitants.

However, reports consistently indicate that Israeli troops continue extensive military operations within this very perimeter. These ongoing activities include ground incursions, the calculated detonation of numerous buildings, and relentless artillery and drone attacks, particularly concentrated in the southern city of Khan Yunis, where displaced populations have sought refuge.

77 years ago today, the UN adopted the Genocide Convention – a treaty to ensure mass atrocities such as the Holocaust never happened again.

— Amnesty UK (@AmnestyUK) December 9, 2025

Deepening Humanitarian Catastrophe

The deliberate and systematic obstruction of humanitarian assistance continues to inflict immense suffering upon thousands of displaced families across Gaza.

The Governmental Information Office critically highlighted that a mere 13,511 humanitarian aid trucks managed to enter the Gaza Strip during these 60 days; which represents a dismal 38 percent fulfillment of the agreed-upon target of 36,000 trucks, leaving vast numbers of people without essential supplies.

This deliberate impediment, exacerbated by the severe onset of winter conditions, has led to a critical shortage of basic necessities like food, clean water, medical supplies, and shelter, including desperately needed tents, plunging an already vulnerable population into an even deeper humanitarian catastrophe.

— Al Jazeera English (@AJEnglish) December 10, 2025

Persistent Breaches of International Law

The persistent attacks and documented violations perpetrated by Israeli forces constitute grave breaches of established international law. These actions include elements of collective punishment against the entire civilian population, systematic forced displacement through destruction of homes and infrastructure, and the deliberate targeting and destruction of essential civilian infrastructure.

Such practices are explicitly prohibited under various international conventions and principles designed to protect civilians and their fundamental rights during armed conflicts, drawing widespread condemnation from Human Rights organizations and international bodies worldwide.

The Ministry of Health in Gaza has confirmed a devastating cumulative toll of 70,366 fatalities and 171,064 injuries across the Strip.

Looking at the broader context, the scale of human suffering since the large-scale offensive began on October 7, 2023, is staggering.

The project aims to extract copper in Uspallata with an estimated investment of $ 560 million, a decision reflects a prioritization of business interests over the protection of the Mendoza River basin, amid a water crisis in the province. Photo: X/@LautaroJimenezB.

Argentina’s Mendoza Senate approved the Environmental Impact Statement for the San Jorge mining project—despite large protests outside the legislature and strong criticism over environmental risks.

The Argentinean provincial senate of Mendoza, approved on Tuesday the Environmental Impact Statement of the PSJ Cooper of Mendoza mining project (ex-San Jorge), in the middle of a major police operation and despite the popular rejection for its potential to contaminate the local water basin.

RELATED: Argentina’s Industrial Sector Cuts Jobs as Production Falls

The current protest was reflected in a caravan that, over two days, traveled more than one hundred kilometers from the town of Uspallata to the provincial capital.

Residents, cyclists, teachers, rural workers, and young people marched from different parts or the province demand that senators halt what they describe as a “direct assault by the mining lobby.”

From the early hours of today, the slogan “Mendoza’s water is not negotiable” set the tone for the protests.

With 29 votes in favor, six against, and one abstention, the measure, promoted by the provincial Government of Governor Alfredo Cornejo and backed by the neoliberal President Javier Milei, reignited long-standing tensions in a province known for defending its water resources.

The chamber also approved the Environmental Impact Statement for the Malargüe Western Mining District II (MDMO II), which includes 27 exploration initiatives. That measure passed with 31 votes in favor and three against.

Environmental concerns

Ahead of the vote, the Environment and Natural Resources Foundation (FARN, in Spanish) warned that the San Jorge assessment contained serious weak points, including potential risks to water sources. The organization argued that the approval defers critical environmental safeguards to later stages, violating national and provincial legislation.

Technical reports from the General Irrigation Department, the National University of Cuyo Foundation, and the National Research Council Scientific and Technical (CONICET, in Spanish) also pointed to structural flaws in the project’s environmental analysis. They highlighted missing hydrogeological data, outdated water-use figures from 2008–2010, insufficient rock samples to evaluate acid drainage risks, and uncertainty about possible impacts on key aquifers connected to the Mendoza River, which provides water to 75% of the provincial population.

FARN stressed that these gaps trigger the “precautionary principle,” arguing the project should not advance until uncertainties are resolved. Indigenous communities in the area have also withheld their consent.

Notwithstanding the outcome of the legislative vote, civic assemblies throughout the province are preparing for demonstrations in the near term against this extractivist project. Their objective is to achieve a breakthrough comparable to 2019, when popular mobilization thwarted a regressive modification of Law 7,722—the legislation prohibiting the use of toxic substances such as cyanide and sulphuric acid—and compelled a retraction of the proposed easing of environmental oversight.

During a televised meeting on Monday, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, announced the birth of the Communal Government of Transition to Socialism.

“Starting today, a Communal Transition Government to Socialism is declared with the 5,336 Self-Government Rooms, with the 5,336 territorial governments that have neighbors, families, communities, concrete forces that debate, participate, act, build, and make their territories visible for a new society,” stated the president.

The Venezuelan president explained that in 2024, when the popular consultation experiment began, 9,258 projects were approved, while in 2025, 33,743 projects were chosen — 8,248 in the first consultation, 6,257 in the second, 8,569 in the third, and 10,669 in the last.

President Maduro pointed out the guidelines for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela’s (PSUV) Politburo so that theories can be put into practice, actions applied, and results obtained in empowering the people.

• The first line of action for 2026 must ensure resources nationwide to finance the two most voted-for projects in every community. “Our goal is 42,688 projects and works approved and implemented by the people at the grassroots level. We must consolidate public works,” the head of state urged.
• The second line of action consists in strengthening the Planning and Action System of the Communes, combining the effectiveness of the Communal 1×10 System of Good Governance, the Concrete Action Agendas (ACA), the Map of Dreams, and the Plan of the 7 Transformations.
• The third line of action seeks to strengthen the self-government system, to which he requested the addition of the Robinsonian concept of toparchy, specifying that this system should create self-government councils, establishing a timeline to track when changes occur in the communities. He stated that the 5,536 self-government councils, with the communal bodies, guide the emergence of a transitional government toward communal socialism.
• Fourth, the president called for a greater boost to the communal economy, which he described as a phenomenon that “flourishes, produces, and trades.” In this regard, he requested the expansion of community banks. “All community circuits must have their own active community bank, which will serve to finance the projects of each community, according to its needs,” Maduro said, adding that there are currently 1,778 active community banks and called for an expansion to 4,000.
• As a fifth point, the head of state called for strengthening the network of Missions and Great Missions so that these social programs can reach many more beneficiaries. “All the missions must be represented in the networks of government and self-government,” the president suggested, guiding the development of social policies at the local level.
• Sixth, President Maduro directed efforts to expand training and communication processes in the communities, for which he called for greater collaboration with the university of the communes. “A solid communication apparatus should emerge from the self-governance centers to defend the truth about Venezuela,” he added.
• The seventh line of action is based on the security and defense of the territory and the homeland. Along these lines, he requested the participation of the Peace Quadrants and asked that there be at least one per communal circuit.

The Venezuelan president noted that this new communal logic has had an impact in the economic growth of the country as reported by the Ministry of Finance. Additionally, he explained that the economic projects within the commune should eventually allow these communes to self-finance their own projects.

Maduro’s days are numbered
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, US ruler Donald Trump expressed his belief that President Nicolás Maduro’s “days are numbered.”

In an interview with Politico, Trump issued a new ultimatum against President Maduro amid Washington’s aggressive campaign against Caracas in the Caribbean. In Venezuela, and among many analysts, it is understood that the White House’s objective is to force a regime change.

When reporter and host of Politico’s The Conversation Dasha Burns asked how far Trump was willing to go to oust Maduro, the US ruler responded, “I don’t want to say that.”

Although he declined to provide further details on how far he might go to remove the Venezuelan president from power, Trump hinted at his tacit support for military strikes on land in Venezuela.

In the same conversation, Trump did not rule out the possibility of taking similar actions against countries such as Colombia and Mexico. Trump said this after the journalist pointed out that other countries are “even more responsible [than Venezuela] for the trafficking of fentanyl to the US.”

More than a third of those arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the first nine months of Donald Trump’s presidency were Mexican. Official data from the federal government, published by local media, revealed that Mexicans represented the largest group of those detained, some 85,000.

Around 90 percent of the more than 220,000 people arrested by ICE were men, mostly between 25 and 45 years old, followed by Guatemalans (31,000) and Hondurans (24,000). The data also shows that 75,000 of those arrested had no criminal record.

Trump’s First 9 Months: ICE Arrested 75,000 With No Criminal Record

For his part, Ariel Ruiz Soto, an analyst at the Migration Policy Institute, stated that this “contradicts the government’s claim that they are going after the worst offenders.”

ICE arrested an average of 824 people per day during the first nine months of Trump’s presidency, a figure more than double what the Biden administration achieved, and still far below the 3,000 daily arrests that Deputy Chief of Staff and architect of anti-immigrant policies Stephen Miller set as the official goal.

Meanwhile, the Detention Watch Network, a civil rights organization that monitors authorities regarding the apprehension of people, stated that “the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is arbitrarily arresting and detaining people on a massive scale.”

“This year, there has been a rise in reports of deaths, medical neglect, isolation, overcrowding, lack of food, and excessive transfers in detention that sever ties (for detainees) with their loved ones and support networks,” it added. The Detention Watch Network added that at least 25 detainees have died in ICE custody since January.

The government indicated that as of December 3, it had a total of 65,735 immigrants in detention, with another 182,000 under surveillance in ICE’s “alternatives to detention” program.

Chicago has been one of the epicenters of protests against ICE policies. Hundreds of demonstrators have regularly protested outside the ICE facility in Broadview since the Trump administration launched its offensive against immigrants in Chicago through “Operation Midway Blitz.”

In this regard, the Peoples Dispatch platform noted that since the operation began in September, Chicago has become a critical point in the fight against Trump’s mass deportation operation.

Not only have local groups and organizations been engaging in popular education about the history of the struggle for immigrant rights and organizing “know your rights” training sessions, but city residents have also participated in spontaneous community resistance wherever they see ICE operations.

“In response to the ICE presence in the city, it has become common for residents to get out of their cars, start filming, and ask agents what they are doing. On October 18, in a massive show of force, Chicago residents took to the streets in one of the largest ‘No Kings Day’ protests in the country, where Mayor Brandon Johnson called for a ‘general strike’ against Trump,” the Peoples Dispatch reported.

By John Perry – Dec 7, 2025

An extraordinary catalog of US interference – amounting to an electoral coup – may have destroyed what was already a struggling democracy in Honduras. Trump has succeeded in closing the door to progressive government and in all likelihood his preferred neoliberal candidate – previously trailing in many opinion polls – will be declared president when the count eventually finishes.

While Washington’s aversion to foreign interference in its domestic elections verges on paranoia, the gross hypocrisy which runs through its foreign policy leaves it free of any compunction when meddling in other countries’ elections, especially in Latin America. Perhaps no country has greater recent experience of this than Honduras. Although most accounts of this meddling begin in 2009 with the ousting by army officers of its democratically elected president, Mel Zelaya, in truth US dominance of the country has a much longer history, as I described at the time.

The US refused to designate Zelaya’s toppling as a “military coup” or to back international calls for his rapid return to office. Washington then backed all the post-coup governments, including those established by Juan Orlando Hernández when his National Party “won” two highly manipulated elections. Rampant corruption by him and his predecessors ensured that Honduras became a “narcostate.” Nevertheless, US administrations embraced Hernández as a prime ally in the war on drugs up until the point when he left office, was extradited and committed to 45 years in a US prison. Only the large majority won by the Libre party’s Xiomara Castro in the 2021 election, and the fact that Hernández had become a liability, temporarily frustrated Washington’s customary ability to get the Honduran president that best suited its interests.

Castro’s government only partly fulfilled its progressive aims, not least because of the continuing power wielded by Honduras’s often corrupt elite, a judicial and security system still strongly subject to US influence, and social media campaigns which often originated in Washington. Opinion polls showed that Castro’s chosen successor as Libre Party candidate, Rixi Moncada, would be in a close race with the right-wing candidates of the two traditional parties, the Liberals’ Salvador Nasralla and the National Party’s Nasry Asfura. Trump favored Asfura, effectively the successor to Juan Orlando Hernández, as the candidate most attuned to his policies.

The fact that the November 30 election took place at the height of the US military build-up in the Caribbean was itself a crucial ingredient in determining the outcome. Both right-wing candidates were able to warn Hondurans that a vote for Libre would be an invitation to the US military to turns its guns on them. Trump emboldened them by asking on Truth Social, “Will Maduro and his Narcoterrorists take over another country like they have taken over Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela?” According to him, a vote for Asfura would ensure that Honduras did not face the same potential fate as Venezuela. “Tito and I can work together to fight the Narcocommunists,” he added. “I cannot work with Moncada and the Communists.” Nor, apparently, could he even trust Nasralla, whom he described as “borderline communist.”

The president then trumped this statement by declaring that only if Asfura won would US aid for Honduras continue. “If he doesn’t win, the United States will not be throwing good money after bad,” he said. When Nasralla appeared to have edged ahead of Asfura, in a close count, Trump said that it “looks like Honduras is trying to change the results of their Presidential Election,” adding, “If they do, there will be hell to pay!” Then, in a night “marked by technical failures and tension in the results system,” the count suddenly gave the lead to Asfura. The International Observation Mission of the American Association of Jurists asserted that Trump’s intervention “has placed the legitimacy of the democratic process in crisis.”

In an even more extraordinary move, Trump announced that he would be pardoning the disgraced former president Hernández, who has indeed since walked free from prison. A move that might have harmed the National Party appears instead to have been an astute boost to Asfura’s campaign, given that many of his supporters still idolize Hernández and regard Asfura as an inferior leader. However, Mike Vigil, a former senior official in the US Drug Enforcement Agency, told the Guardian that pardoning Hernández “shows that the entire counter-drug effort of Donald Trump is a charade.” Activist and author Dana Frank told the Guardian that “his repressive, thieving, dictatorial history, backed by the United States year after year, has evaporated from the story.”

Electoral Coup in Honduras: Ruling Party Alleges Fraud, Requests Annulment of Vote Count

Another, very effective but little publicized intervention appears to have taken place, if Rixi Moncada’s claim in an interview with Telesur is correct. According to her, huge numbers of the 2.5 million Hondurans who receive remittances from family members in the US were warned that, if Libre won, they would not receive their December payments. The magnitude of the threat (whether or not it could have been carried out in practice) is indicated by the fact that remittances account for a quarter of Honduras’s GDP. It seems possible that many poor households’ votes, which might have gone to Libre, didn’t – because of text messages sent directly to their phones.

That electoral fraud would again favor the US-supported candidate was indicated in the run up to November 30 by leaked audios implicating the National Party’s representative on the national election council. The council’s Libre representative, Marlon Ochoa, who denounced that planned fraud, has now published a detailed account of irregularities since counting started, which he claims invalidate 86 per cent of polling returns. Indeed, at the time of writing, following a week of technical problems in vote counting, there is still no official winner.

Rixi Moncada harshly questioned the silence of the electoral observation missions from the Organization of America States and European Union, which she accused of deliberately omitting any reference to Trump’s interference in their bulletins on the conduct of the election. “So far they have not commented on the intervention of the U.S. president in their reports,” Moncada claimed, noting their attitude “borders on complacency.” New York Timesinterviews with Hondurans showed clearly that Trump’s comments influenced their votes. Mark Weisbrot, of the US Center for Economic and Policy Research, pointed out that his interventions were “a violation of Article 19 of the Charter of the Organization of American States, to which the United States is a signatory.”

Emboldened by his apparent success in defeating “communism,” even if (at the time of writing) he may not yet have secured the victory of his preferred neoliberal candidate, Trump has gone on to publish his own “corollary” to the century-old Monroe Doctrine, endorsing its claims to a unique US sphere of influence covering the whole region. Echoing the 1904 corollary to the doctrine issued by President Roosevelt, which declared that the US would be a “hemispheric police power,” Trump says he is “proudly reasserting” control over “our hemisphere,” guarding the American continents “against communism, fascism, and foreign infringement.”

Nothing could be a clearer manifestation of what has been called the “Donroe Doctrine” than the military build-up in the Caribbean, which provided the threatening backdrop to the final weeks of the Honduran election campaign. As Roger Harris and I noted in a recent article, the deployment of one-fifth of US maritime power is aimed not just at Venezuela, but at starting a wider domino effect in the Caribbean basin. In the aftermath of November’s election night in Honduras, the first domino appears to have fallen.

Following the recent declaration of Joropo as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Bolivarian Government of Venezuela announced that the next nomination dossier to be submitted to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will be that of the hallaca.

In order to combine all the country’s efforts in rescuing and promoting its cultural and gastronomic traditions, the Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas Poljak, confirmed that work is underway on the hallaca nomination dossier, as instructed by the National Executive.

Venezuela Celebrates Joropo as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

In an exchange of views with the President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, via telephone and broadcast on Venezolana de Televisión, he received heartfelt congratulations for the important role played by the Great Mission Viva Venezuela in promoting these traditions.

In this regard, the President emphasized that perseverance on the path of identity is crucial, especially to counteract international campaigns that seek to attack Venezuelan identity.

He also described the Venezuelan people as “noble, special, blessed, loving, with a truly impressive identity and culture, and a history of patriotism, a history of freedom, independence, and excellence.”

The Cultural Revolution

The announcement of the new nominations comes in the context of the celebration of Joropo as the nation’s eleventh cultural heritage. “This is the real Venezuela. The Venezuela that sings its own song, that dances to its own rhythm… we will never dance, never, to the rhythm of any foreign empire. We will continue dancing Joropo, as in Carabobo, as in Ayacucho,” said the Head of State.

On the other hand, he stressed that for a revolution to be true, it must be a great cultural revolution like the one initiated by Commander Chávez.

Commemoration of the Battle of Santa Inés

As part of this cultural celebration, President Maduro invited everyone to a national mobilization tomorrow, December 10th, to commemorate the Battle of Santa Inés of 1859, led by Ezequiel Zamora.

“I’m told there will be massive mobilizations throughout the country tomorrow, but that farmers, fishermen, cultural practitioners, and joropo dancers will take over the entire city of Caracas in a march to tell the general of the sovereign people, Ezequiel Zamora, ‘You are with us,'” he stated.

By Francisco Dominguez – Dec 8, 2025

A vast US war fleet deployed in the south Caribbean — ostensibly to fight drug-trafficking but widely seen as a push for violent regime change — has sparked international condemnation and bipartisan resistance in the US itself.

Since August the US has deployed a vast war fleet in the South Caribbean Sea, claiming it is to combat drug-trafficking but really about violent “regime change” in Venezuela and aimed at taking possession of the largest oil reserves on the planet.

These threats have been dangerously ratcheted up in recent days with US President Donald Trump declaring the air space above and surrounding Venezuela “closed in its entirety” and that land strikes in Venezuela “could start very soon.”

Since early September, the US military has struck over 20 small boats, killing 83 people, actions that are tantamount to extrajudicial killings that could legally be defined as war crimes.

The Trump administration has provided no information on the people killed and has failed to provide evidence the boats were trafficking narcotics.

Violations of international law
Both the explicit military threats of the war fleet deployment against Venezuela and the extrajudicial killings gravely violate international law, specifically Article 2 of the UN Charter. They also constitute a violation of the Organisation of American States’ charter, particularly concerning the objectives stated in Article 2 and the principles outlined in Article 3, plus many other international protocols.

Opposition to Trump’s military aggression
There is growing unease internationally with the presidents of ColombiaMexico and Brazil (among others) voicing strong opposition to the war fleet deployment, the killings, and the threats of illegally declaring another country’s air space closed and of an imminent military attack inside Venezuela.

UN experts Ben Saul and George Katrougalos have expressed alarm at the mounting pressure from the US on Venezuela since any “measure that seek to regulate, restrict or ‘close’ another state’s air space” blatantly violates Article 1 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation.

To them the US attacks on alleged drug-traffickers at sea — killing over 80 civilians — are grave violations of the right to life and the international law of the sea about which they said: “Those involved in ordering and carrying out these extrajudicial killings must be investigated and prosecuted for homicide.”

Opposition has also come from the UNUN experts, the G77+China, the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac)-EU Summit, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – Peoples’ Trade Treaty (Alba-TCP) countries, parliamentarians from Latin American nations, at UN security council and the Puebla Group echoing concerns.

Pope Leo XIV, who, in a direct reference to the tension in the Caribbean, said “no-one wins with violence.”

US opposition to the military aggression
Republican Senator Rand Paul said that US attacks on drug boats are “outrageous.”

Democrats Tim Kaine of Virginia, Chuck Schumer of New York and Adam Schiff of California and Republican Rand Paul of Kentucky said in a joint statement: “Unauthorised military action against Venezuela would be a colossal and costly mistake that needlessly risks the lives of our servicemembers.”

Senator Schiff has added that war against Venezuela has not been authorised by Congress and it is not to combat drug-trafficking but aims at violent “regime change,” adding that “Americans do not want another war.” He is seeking to pass legislation to block hostilities against Venezuela.

The chair of the US Congress intelligence committee, Republican Mike Turner of Ohio in a TV interview (December 4) said that members of Congress have made it clear that the administration has not provided sufficient information to have the support of Congress.

Additionally, lawmaker Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts) on December 4 unveiled a Bipartisan War Powers Resolution to Block Trump War on Venezuela.

The initiative is being formally supported by Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Democrat Joaquin Castro of Texas. McGovern said: “No conflict for oil, no armed intervention, no war with Venezuela.”

This is in line with US public opinion with 70 per cent of Americans oppose military action against Venezuela.

Retired four star general Barry McCaffrey said targeting the president of another nation and using the US armed forces against criminal operations — a task for law enforcement — are of dubious legality. He added that the US is trying “to get Maduro out easy or hard” and then get access to Venezuela’s oil.

Thousands of People Mobilize in the US Against Trump’s War Threats to Venezuela

The second-strike scandal
Lawmakers from both the Republican and Democrat parties have expressed alarm in recent days over a Washington Post report that Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth on September 2 ordered troops to fire for a second time on a boat to kill survivors of a first strike, who were alive and out of combat. That would constitute a war crime. The political fallout may lead to a congressional and a senatorial investigation.

False drug-trafficking narrative
The decision to deploy the US war against Venezuela was achieved by Marco Rubio claiming Venezuela is a threat to US sovereignty, labelling it a narco-state run by the non-existent Cartel de los Soles.

This is both a deceptive and an absurd pretext for war. It’s deceptive because Venezuela has virtually no role in the fentanyl trade, and Drug Enforcement Administration data suggests that only about 8 per cent of US-bound cocaine gets to the country through a “Caribbean corridor” (most of that passing through Venezuela).

The “war against drug-trafficking” fell flat on its face as highly unconvincing, when on December 2 President Trump granted a “full and complete pardon” to Honduras ex-president Juan Orlando Hernandez who was convicted by a US court to 45 years in prison for having shipped about 400 tons of cocaine into the US.

What we must call for
The only sensible course is, regardless of anybody’s view on the Venezuelan government, is:

•  To vigorously oppose what clearly appears to be a violent “regime change operation” aimed at taking forcibly control of the largest reserves of oil in the planet.
•  To urge the US administration to stop the extra judicial killings in the Caribbean Sea immediately
•  In line with Senator Adams’s attempted legislation, urge the US government to stop the hostilities given that the massive escalation (such the illegal decision to close Venezuela’s air space and the highly dangerous announcement to start “land strikes” inside Venezuela itself) may engulf and destabilise the whole region with unpredictable consequences.
•  Highlight how the highly dangerous US war fleet deployment contravenes Celac’s decision in 2014 to declare Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, which should be respected.

The President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro Moros, chaired the National Council for Productive Economy, a key body for consolidating the country’s economic recovery and strengthening the 13 engines of the Bolivarian Economic Agenda.

This forum brings together the business sector, public and private banks, the Executive Cabinet, sectoral vice presidents, and representatives of chambers of commerce and business associations, with the common goal of promoting a prosperous and self-sufficient Venezuela.

Venezuelan Economy Remains Stable Despite U.S. Threats

The Venezuelan economy has registered 18 consecutive quarters of growth, a remarkable achievement in the regional and global context.

During a recent address at the National Hall of the Popular Government System, the president announced that, by 2026, 77% of the national budget will be allocated to social investment, prioritizing projects decided directly by communities through democratic participation mechanisms.

Commitment to Social Welfare and Resistance to the Blockade

The Bolivarian Government’s approach focuses on counteracting the effects of unilateral coercive measures through inclusive and sustainable economic policies.

Within this framework, GDP growth of up to 9% is projected by the end of 2025, exceeding the estimates of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).

The forum also promotes productive diversification, the strengthening of strategic sectors such as mining and oil, and the promotion of public-private partnerships to increase non-oil exports. These actions are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at national economic recovery and the consolidation of productive sovereignty.

For her part, Executive Vice President Delcy Rodríguez stated during the session that “there is not a single productive sector in Venezuela that is not currently showing growth.”

She highlighted the joint effort between workers, business owners, and social movements as a fundamental pillar for overcoming the effects of the economic blockade and external threats.

Rodríguez highlighted national cohesion as a determining factor in economic stabilization and celebrated the recent inscription of the joropo on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, symbolically linking it to the resilience of the Venezuelan people. “Here we have a great treasure of humanity: the good men and women of Venezuela,” she stated.

At the close of the year, the Vice President emphasized that the National Council for Productive Economy is ending with a positive balance: “A year-end where Venezuela can tell the world, ‘Here we are, the Venezuelan men and women who love our country… who with great hope are committed to the well-being of our sons and daughters.'”

The Bolivarian Government of Venezuela called for a grand national celebration following the recent declaration of Joropo as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This distinction marks the eleventh Venezuelan cultural expression to receive such international recognition.

During a telephone interview broadcast on Venezolana de Televisión, the Minister of Popular Power for Culture, Ernesto Villegas Poljak, speaking with President Nicolás Maduro, emphasized the significance of this declaration.

Indigenous Peoples Call for Peace in Venezuela

“We are calling on all cultural practitioners, artists, and creators from all artistic disciplines, and our people in general, to make this declaration a national celebration because we are all united in Joropo,” Villegas stated.

Joropo, a central expression of Venezuelan identity, encompasses a wide range of artistic manifestations. “Circus arts, theater, poetry, literature, sculpture—all expressions of art and culture are included because joropo is Venezuela,” the minister emphasized.

He also recalled that this achievement is part of a process initiated in 2012 by Commander Hugo Chávez with the declaration of the Dancing Devils of Venezuela, to which ten other cultural expressions have been added, most recently.

Immediate Celebration with Cultural Practitioners

As part of the commemorative activities, joropo dancers were invited to the San Carlos Barracks, headquarters of the Alí Primera House of Culture and Liberty, to begin the celebrations on December 9.

For his part, President Maduro praised the diversity of joropo, which includes Llanero, Tuyero, and Eastern styles, and its presence throughout the national territory, from the Llanos plains to Caracas and Carabobo. “We will never dance, never, to the rhythm of any foreign empire. We will continue dancing joropo, as in Carabobo, as in Ayacucho,” the president declared, while linking traditional music with cultural resistance and national sovereignty.

The Hallaca Before UNESCO

In line with this policy of safeguarding heritage, the National Executive announced that the next dossier Venezuela will submit to UNESCO will be that of the hallaca, a gastronomic symbol of Venezuelan Christmas.

“Work is underway on the hallaca dossier, as instructed by the National Executive,” Villegas confirmed, highlighting the role of the Great Mission Viva Venezuela in preserving traditions.

Maduro described the Venezuelan people as “noble, special, blessed, loving, with a truly impressive identity and culture, and a history of patriotism,” reaffirming that a true revolution must be, above all, a great cultural revolution.

Mobilization for the Battle of Santa Inés

As the closing event of the cultural and patriotic celebrations, President Maduro called for a national mobilization on December 10th to commemorate the Battle of Santa Inés of 1859, led by General Ezequiel Zamora.

“The farmers, fishermen, cultural practitioners, and joropo dancers will take to the streets of Caracas to tell the general of the sovereign people, Ezequiel Zamora: you are with us,” he announced.

Summary: Venezuela celebrates the recognition of joropo as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and announces the nomination of hallacas to UNESCO, within the framework of a national strategy to strengthen cultural identity and historical memory.

The Chinese Ministry of Defense confirms the execution of a coordinated flight over the East China Sea and the Western Pacific, within the framework of annual military cooperation and in compliance with international law.

China and Russia have taken another step in strengthening their strategic alliance with the execution of a joint air patrol, the tenth of its kind. The operation was carried out over the waters of the East China Sea and the vast expanse of the western Pacific Ocean, as confirmed by the Chinese Ministry of Defense in an official statement.

Iran and Russia Deepen Cooperation on AI and Cybersecurity

The air exercise falls within the framework of the annual bilateral cooperation plan, confirming the strength of the military ties between the two powers. The Chinese statement emphasized the routine nature of these maneuvers and their intention to maintain stability and mutual trust in a region of increasing geopolitical tension.

For its part, the Russian Ministry of Defense provided specific details on the composition of the deployed air force. The air group consisted of Russian Tu-95MS strategic bombers and their Chinese counterparts, the Xian H-6K strategic bombers, key aircraft in both countries’ long-range arsenals.

The coordinated flight lasted approximately eight hours and was protected and supported by state-of-the-art fighter jets, including the Russian Su-30SM and Su-35S, as well as the Chinese Shenyang J-16 fighter. The Russian military emphasized that the aircraft operated in strict compliance with international law, without violating the airspace of any foreign state.

This long-range patrol comes shortly after important consultations on missile defense and strategic stability held in late November in Moscow. Following that meeting, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov highlighted the considerable increase in the number of joint exercises with China, a clear sign of deepening military cooperation.

Belousov also emphasized that military cooperation between Moscow and Beijing is based on trust and a mutual understanding of their interests. He concluded that the “friendly and trusting relations” between the two countries’ leaders, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, are a determining and key factor in further consolidating Russian-Chinese strategic ties.

The ninth joint strategic air patrol was conducted in November 2024. These actions complement the joint surface patrols initiated in 2021, which have been conducted annually with ships such as Russia’s Admiral Tributs, China’s destroyer Shaoxing, and the logistics ship Qiandaohu in 2025.

These exercises constitute a series of strategic initiatives that underscore the deepening of defense relations between the two nations.

This article by Alejandro Cruz originally appeared in the December 9, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.

Mexico City’s head of government Clara Brugada, handed out vouchers for the Mercomuna program, to be exchanged for food at small neighborhood businesses and public markets.

With this, she stressed, not only does the population that needs it most benefit, but also the local economy, small merchants, in whose strategy 30,000 entrepreneurs have registered, in addition to strengthening the capital’s supply centers.

“We want to strengthen the grassroots economy and the people. And that’s why we saw it as very important that this support could be democratized in the city,” the official explained.

In this way, she explained, the budget of 900 million pesos allocated to this strategy does not remain in a commercial franchise or large shopping centers, but is distributed among businesses, neighborhood stores, and their own neighbors.

She added that merchants don’t have to pay anything to register with Mercomuna, and all they have to do is call Locatel. The head of the local government noted that there are currently 300,000 beneficiaries receiving Mercomuna vouchers worth 2,000 pesos in a single payment, but that next year they expect to double this number of people and increase the financial support to 3,000 pesos.

“It’s almost a local currency. And thousands of transactions are made for food, with their Mercomuna voucher, which guarantees food for their family,” he said.

Since 2002, the date of the 47-hour coup against Hugo Chávez, Washington has unsuccessfully sponsored and supported regime change in Venezuela time and again. In the name of human rights, freedom, and democracy, economic sanctions, color revolutions, oil strikes, recognition of illegitimate leaders, theft of foreign currency and infrastructure, assassination attempts, media offensives, military uprisings, and threats of ground invasion have been instigated or combined without interruption.

Many of these attacks, aimed at seizing the largest oil reserves on the planet, are acts of international piracy. They have caused immense damage to the country and enormous suffering to its people. They have resulted in billions of dollars in lost oil revenue. Countless Venezuelans have been forced to migrate to other nations to survive. Meanwhile, a segment of the old, corrupt oligarchy lives the high life in their mansions in Miami and Madrid.

But despite the lethality of the punishments and the harshness of the siege, the Bolivarian Revolution continues. Certainly, some Chavista political leaders have betrayed the cause. A few military and intelligence officers have gone over to the enemy ranks. Intellectuals have succumbed to the siren song of metropolitan power. But, against all odds, the majority of the population draws a line in the sand against gunboat democracy; they remain loyal to a project that allowed them to recover their dignity and advance in popular power.

For 27 years, Bolivarianism has won almost every election. Desperate in the face of this setback, the empire has tried other formulas for regime change. In December 2007, Enrique Krauze laid his cards on the table. “If Hugo Chávez has thought of turning Venezuela into a Cuba with oil, the Venezuelans who oppose him have discovered the antidote. It is the student movement,” he wrote. So the far right latched onto this movement and tested an insurrectionary scheme. However, the reactionary forces clashed with a reality that wasn’t in their playbooks. So they left to make their fortunes abroad.

All imperial attempts at regime change have run up against what, until now, seems insurmountable: the unity of the Bolivarian National Armed Forces (FANB). There is not a single indicator showing any internal divisions. Part of the key to this unity is the development of a new military doctrine known as the Comprehensive Defense of the Nation. This doctrine seeks to confront the US military threat based on a set of actions designed to deter a technologically and numerically superior enemy.

This strategy has three central elements: strengthening military power, deepening the civil-military union (between the people and the soldiers), and bolstering popular participation in national defense tasks. Previously, the armed forces were fragmented into divisions and brigades. Commander Chávez organized the country into regions, and each region has a military structure with all its components: Army, Navy, Air Force, National Guard, militias, and the people.

If someone attacks a region, that region has the capacity to defend itself. It doesn’t need to move units from elsewhere. On February 23, 2019, under the pretext of bringing in humanitarian aid from Colombia, the Contras and Washington attempted to establish a beachhead in Táchira that would give the illegitimate Juan Guaidó control of a strip of Venezuelan territory to establish a “seat of government.” For 17 hours, fierce clashes erupted between Chavistas and Venezuelan paramilitaries and guarimberos, who operated mostly from the Colombian side. The skirmish ended with the opposition’s defeat.

There, amidst the events, at the military installation beside the Simón Bolívar Bridge, I spoke with Diosdado Cabello, then president of the National Constituent Assembly. Most of the FANB (National Bolivarian Armed Forces) chiefs were also present, whom he introduced to me as his friends and as longtime collaborators of Hugo Chávez. I asked him about the resolve of his troops. In good spirits, he explained:

“President Maduro has visited every barracks. He shows up in the early morning. He arrives, runs with them, shares, does military exercises with them. We have total contact with them. We are like brothers. Many of us have been in this movement since we were children. We support each other and follow each other. We are a family. They will not break us…”

Regarding the role of the militias, he told me: “For the friends of the State, they are a diamond. For the enemies of the State, they are the worst news.” A military intervention by a foreign country in Venezuela is very complicated, and not only because of the civil-military alliance.

Caracas has modernized its weaponry by acquiring it from Russia, China, and Iran, with whom it also maintains an alliance. Furthermore, it covers an area of almost one million square kilometers. Its topography is highly diverse: the Andes mountain range, the Coastal Range, and the Guiana Shield, along with the extensive Orinoco River basin. It boasts 4,208 kilometers of coastline and dense rainforests. The poor neighborhoods of cities like Caracas are dangerous. It shares a 2,341-kilometer border with Colombia, a 2,199-kilometer border with Brazil, and a 789-kilometer border with Guyana.

No neighboring country desires armed conflict on its borders. Venezuela possesses the men, weapons, determination, and territory capable of sustaining a prolonged popular resistance, turning any attempt to occupy the country into a quagmire for whoever tries it. Regardless of what might happen on the day of the occupation, the true military challenge for an invading force lies in what to do in the days that follow. However, beyond what may happen in the future, in Venezuela, today is the time for peace.

The Turkish Armed Forces have completed their preparations to join a peacekeeping mission in the Gaza Strip. The units designated for this task are ready and awaiting orders for deployment to the region, as part of an international effort led by Egypt at the United Nations (UN).

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdellaty confirmed that Cairo is working to secure an urgent resolution from the UN Security Council. The primary mission of this contingent would be to monitor the flow of humanitarian aid and ensure its proper distribution to the population in Gaza.

Turkey’s integration has the support of the United States, which welcomes its participation in the peace process. However, the proposal has met with opposition from Israel.

UN figures show 1,857 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food, most by Israel’s military.

While the details are being finalized, Indonesia, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan are also in negotiations to contribute troops to the future stabilization force. A senior US official noted that these three countries are the leading candidates to contribute troops to a future stabilization force in the enclave.

Alongside peace diplomacy, Egypt has hardened its stance on actions in the enclave. Recently, Abdelatty denounced the “daily Israeli violations” in Gaza, despite the existing truce, warning that these actions threaten the ceasefire.

Assessing the cessation of hostilities, the Egyptian foreign minister described the situation as mixed, acknowledging the prisoner exchange but criticizing the continued incursions by the Israeli army.

The Egyptian foreign minister stated that any plan to displace Palestinians is a “red line” that will not be accepted by Egypt, a rejection shared by eight other Muslim countries. He also questioned Israel’s plans for the unilateral reopening of the Rafah border crossing and insisted on the Zionist entity’s legal obligation to open the five crossings that connect it to Gaza.

Along the same lines, Abdellaty assured that, on the Egyptian side, the Rafah crossing operates 24 hours a day to facilitate the entry of aid.

During his address to the People’s Assembly for Sovereignty and Peace of Our America, the president of the National Assembly (AN) of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, denounced that Washington is waging a war to “devastate” Venezuela, in collaboration with “subservient” internal actors, with the objective of seizing its resources. This was a reference to the imperial threat, present for the past four months, with US troops deployed in the Caribbean under the pretext of a supposed fight against drug trafficking.

“The brutal aggression” deployed by the United States involves the presence of “22 percent of the naval force of the most brutal empire that humanity has ever known in the Caribbean Sea,” Rodríguez stated.

This action, Rodríguez declared, constitutes “Monroe Doctrine 2.0.” The president of the National Assembly also criticized the U.S. strategy, based on an “extravagant narrative” about drug trafficking, which, in his view, seeks to justify recent actions in the region. “They’re smarting from the fact they haven’t been able to isolate us,” he asserted, referring to the United States’ frustration with Venezuelan resistance.

Rodríguez recalled that the blockade imposed by Washington reduced the country’s income “to one percent,” affecting the supply of food, medicine, and other essential resources for the Venezuelan population.

Furthermore, he denounced the existence of 962 illegal, illegitimate, and unilateral U.S. sanctions, which have cost these lives and affected social programs, such as the one that used dividends from the CITGO company to pay for expensive treatments for children.

The head of the Venezuelan Parliament detailed the workings of the Simón Bolívar program, created by Commander Chávez and maintained by President Maduro, which used resources from a Venezuelan company located in the United States to finance complex surgeries for children. However, when the United States illegally appropriated these funds, instead of being used for children’s treatments, they were used by Juan Guaidó’s “Narnia government” to acquire mansions.

Rodríguez stated that, despite constant imperialist attacks and those from the internal far right, Venezuela has managed to move forward, although he acknowledged that “it sounds easy, but it hasn’t been easy at all.”

Faced with these aggressions, Rodríguez issued a clear warning: “Should any aggression dare to enter the sacred territory of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, rest assured that we must defend it with our lives; we will give our lives.” He also emphasized the national unity surrounding President Maduro, including those who do not subscribe to the Revolution, in a unified rejection of imperialist interference and in defense of peace.

Finally, the Speaker of the Venezuelan Parliament reaffirmed that Venezuela is a nation of peace, promoting a National Council for Peace at the initiative of President Nicolás Maduro. However, he clarified that this is not the peace of the subservient, the submissive, or the enslaved, but the peace of free men and women and sovereign peoples.

The People’s Assembly for Peace and Sovereignty of Our America inaugurated its session in Caracas, Venezuela, this Tuesday, December 9. The international meeting, which will continue until Thursday, December 11, is taking place in the Venezuela Hall of the Military Circle and brings together national and international guests from all continents, fostering dialogue and unity in the Global South.
