According to reports from the official SANA news agency, an occupying force, consisting of 18 military vehicles and a large armored personnel carrier, moved from the interior of the occupied Golan Heights to Tel Ahmar Gharbi, where these forces have established a base in the southern part of the governorate.

The reports also point out that the occupation forces entered the village of Ruehina, where they set up two checkpoints, as part of a series of incursions in the region.

The previous day, Israeli troops also entered the villages of Bir Ajam and Bariqa al-Qadima, searching several homes and causing tension among the local population.

Israel continues to pursue aggressive policies and repeatedly violate the 1974 Disengagement Agreement through incursions into the Quneitra and Daraa governorates, as well as attacks against the civilian population.

In response to these actions, Syria reiterated its call for the implementation of relevant United Nations resolutions and an end to the Israeli occupation of its territory, and urged the international community to assume its responsibilities to halt these illegal practices.

Previously, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei stated that Araghchi will travel to Belarus on December 15 and visit Russia on the 16th and 17th.

Talks are scheduled with the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov,” the statement said.

According to the statement, the Russian and Iranian foreign ministers intend to thoroughly discuss current international issues, including the situation surrounding the Iranian nuclear program, and exchange views on regional issues of mutual interest.

Special attention will be paid to current topics on the traditionally intense bilateral agenda of Russian-Iranian relations, which reached a very different level of comprehensive strategic partnership following the entry into force of the new interstate treaty on October 2, 2025, the Russian Foreign Ministry concluded.

Last Friday, the Central Bank of Russia filed a lawsuit against Euroclear for causing losses to the Russian regulator by preventing it from accessing its funds and securities, as well as for the mechanisms the European Commission is considering for the direct or indirect use of its assets without consent.

The Bank is requesting compensation from the Moscow Arbitration Court for the damages incurred.

V According to the Bank, the amount claimed comprises its frozen funds, the value of its blocked securities, and lost revenue.

Following the start of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the European Union (EU) and the G7 froze Russian assets worth €300 billion.

Approximately €200 billion of this is held within the EU, primarily in accounts at Euroclear, based in Belgium.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the freezing of these assets “theft” and pointed out that the EU is targeting not only the money of private investors but also Russia’s sovereign assets.

Kast got 58.16 percent of the vote, while Jara, the candidate representing the left-wing, progressive, and social democratic parties, reached 41.84 percent in Sunday’s elections, when nearly 100 percent of the polling stations had been counted.

Kast, who made security the central issue of his campaign, said in his first address to the nation that he will work to restore “peace and order” and reiterated his threats against undocumented immigrants.

He affirmed, “Do not ask us, irregular migrants, to spend resources on you.” “Anyone who breaks the law has to leave.”

Although the eight left-wing and center parties that supported Jara will have to conduct an in-depth study of the causes of this resounding defeat, several experts are trying to explain the rise of the far right in the country.

Kast, of the far-right Partido Republicano (Republican Party), had the support of the also extremist Partido Nacional Libertario (National Libertarian Party), close to President Javier Milei’s ideas, and the traditional right.

The president-elect will take office on March 11.

Spokesperson Olof Gill stated that the agreement is a matter of utmost importance for our European Union (EU), from an economic, diplomatic, and geopolitical point of view, but also in terms of responsibility on the world stage.

France urged the EU and the Mercosur countries on Sunday to postpone their meeting scheduled for December, arguing that the conditions for signing the EU-Mercosur trade agreement are not yet in place.

The Southern Common Market (Mercosur) is an economic bloc founded in 1991 by Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. In 2012, Mercosur incorporated Venezuela (the Brazilian Senate ratified Bolivia’s entry as a full member of Mercosur on November 28, 2023).

This body constitutes an open and dynamic process. Since its creation, its main objective has been to foster a common space that generates trade and investment opportunities through the competitive integration of national economies.

The European Commission is an institution of the European Union, created in 1958 and headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. It serves as the EU’s executive body. It represents the general interest of the Union and proposes and implements laws that respond to the objectives of the EU treaties.

The EU is an economic and political partnership of 27 European countries that have delegated part of their sovereignty to common institutions to democratically make decisions on matters of common interest (founded on November 1, 1993, in Maastricht, Netherlands).

Since December 1, intense fighting in South Kivu province has forced more than 500,000 people, including over 100,000 children, to seek refuge in other locations or cross the border into Burundi and Rwanda, the international organization noted.

With the spread of violence, displacement is expected to increase even further, and UNICEF expressed concern for the safety and well-being of these children, according to a statement.

Among the risks these children face are family separation, exposure to violence, exploitation, gender-based and sexual violence, as well as psychosocial suffering.

According to UNICEF, between December 6 and 11 alone, more than 50,000 Congolese people were identified as having arrived in Burundi, nearly half of whom are minors—a number expected to rise in the coming days.

Many of these refugees have injuries, and there are also unaccompanied children or children separated from their families. Therefore, UNICEF is working with the authorities of the DRC and Burundi to mobilize an urgent humanitarian response.

The agency urged all parties to protect children and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, emphasizing that children should never pay the price of conflict.

PDVSA blames attack to Trump’s sustained aggression strategy.

Through a statement published on Monday, Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), said it was the victim of a cyberattack aimed at paralyzing its operations.

RELATED:

Venezuela Blames US Sanctions for Chevron’s Return of Oil Shipments to PDVSA

Company officials attributed the attack to a strategy of sustained aggression by U.S. President Donald Trump, whom they accuse of seeking to seize Venezuelan oil through the use of force and acts of piracy in the Caribbean Sea. The full statement follows:

“PDVSA informs the Venezuelan people and the international community that the company was the target of a cyberattack aimed at halting its operations. Thanks to the expertise of PDVSA’s human talent, operational areas were not affected, as the incident was limited to an attack on its administrative system.

As a result, the industry’s operational continuity has been maintained through the implementation of secure protocols that allow for regular activities in supplying products to the domestic market, as well as fulfilling all export commitments.

This attempted act of aggression adds to the public strategy of the U.S. government to seize Venezuelan oil through force and piracy. The working class of the hydrocarbons industry has faced attacks of this nature in the past. It was precisely their commitment, expertise and loyalty that made it possible to detect and neutralize this new attack.

PDVSA categorically rejects this despicable action, orchestrated by foreign interests in complicity with unpatriotic actors seeking to undermine the country’s right to sovereign energy development. It should be recalled that this is not the first time the U.S. government, allied with extremist sectors, has attempted to affect national stability and steal Christmas from the Venezuelan people.

Nothing and no one will stop the victorious march of PDVSA and its working class in the service of all Venezuelan men and women.”

The Colombian president condemns far-right win as Kast secures landslide in Chilean presidential race.

On Sunday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro said that “winds of death are coming” as he commented on the victory of far-right politician Jose Antonio Kast in Chile’s presidential election.

Chile’s police represses protests against New President Elect Kast

“From the south and from the north come the winds of death. Beware, Gran Colombians, they are coming for us, and we must resist with Bolívar’s sword held high and the stride of victors”, he said.

“The pendulum does not return to its place because the Chilean people have always been progressive. From the southern ocean’s depths, the arrows of Arauco stopped the Spaniards. They already censored the tweet I wrote, but I said there, and I repeat it here, they killed the president again,” Petro said, in a symbolic reference to the death of former Chilean President Salvador Allende.

“Fascism is advancing. I will never shake the hand of a Nazi or the son of a Nazi,” the Colombian president said of Kast, who has publicly expressed sympathy for the murderous dictatorship led by Gen. Augusto Pinochet from 1973 to 1990.

“It is sad that Pinochet had to impose himself by force, but even sadder now is that the people choose their own Pinochet. Elected or not, they are sons of Hitler, and Hitler kills peoples. He is the demon against life, and every Latin American knows how to resist,” Petro warned and invoked the memory of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

“Protect Neruda’s grave, I said in the censored tweet. I was near his grave and in his house, and I was happy near that house, and I saw the starry skies and the stars twinkled blue in the distance, but I was not abandoned at all,” he added.

On Sunday, Kast won 58.61% of the vote, defeating Communist Party candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.4%, according to preliminary figures from Chile’s Electoral Service. The result represents the second-largest presidential victory margin since Chile’s return to democracy, surpassed only by Michelle Bachelet’s win in 2013.

Jose Antonio Kast, the youngest of 10 children of Nazi military officer Michael Kast Schindele and Olga Rist Hagspiel, a German immigrant couple who arrived in Chile after World War II, will assume the presidency on March 11, 2026, when the term of current President Gabriel Boric ends.

This editorial by Miguel Ángel Velázquez originally appeared in the December 15, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper. The views expressed in this article are the authors’ and do not necessarily reflect those of Mexico Solidarity Media*, or the* Mexico Solidarity Project*.*

In some left-wing circles it is said, with a hint of annoyance, that the right is “morally defeated” and therefore is not an electoral threat today.

NO DISCOURSE IS MORE DANGEROUS. We must understand that the right wing is not just a flag, a political party, a fleeting movement, or a group of power nostalgics opposed to the Fourth Transformation. It is also the use of money, the millions and millions of pesos or dollars it is willing to spend to remove from power anyone it dislikes, no matter how well it benefits capital.

These are the groups that go unseen, that allow themselves to be convinced, or that precipitate situations; they are the ones who finance toxic spaces on social networks or certain media outlets where ideas such as social programs or aid to the most needy belong to a set of measures that the groups being helped do not deserve, because these are resources that should, in some way, be put into their own pockets.

TODAY MORE THAN EVER, especially when talking about left-wing “dictatorships”, those who make the judgment forget about Bukele, Milei and even Trump himself; they distort realities and judge Cuba or Venezuela, but forgive their oppressors.

In short, we cannot afford to be mistaken, fall into the trap, and give value to lies. Therefore, we must consider one of the groups that are not necessarily against measures that could achieve greater social justice, but that yearn for power as a means of control. We are referring to the Church as a political entity, not as a symbol of the faith of many.

In short, the map of the right wing that they claim doesn’t exist is vast. We should remember those who called themselves “Frena,” or groups like “Mexicans Against Corruption,” or the National Front for the Family, or some others who, without much publicity, act from political levels that have nothing to do with the parties, but act daily against those who voted for the 4T project, that is, the vast majority of citizens in the country.

Next year we will be able to identify, with a certain degree of certainty, the right-wing groups that claim not to exist but are active, that finance campaigns, that financially support pink or black demonstrations, as long as they cause some kind of damage to the current government.

Alfonso Durazo, current Morena governor of Sonora, and former private secretary to President Vicente Fox of PAN.

What we do agree with internal critics on is that what doesn’t exist in the political sphere is a true left-wing party, because Morena is neither a party nor left-wing. It’s a movement whose goal is to win elections without charting a defined political course, where Javier Corral or Governor Alfonso Durazo can be just as likely to join as some long-time activists who haven’t been corrupted by power.

Therefore, next year will also be a time to tear off masks, to remove facades. As always, ambitions will reveal who is who, and there will surely be many more surprises than we imagine. But it will also be a time for reflection; it’s about time.

Just Passing By

Everything indicates that yes, the PAN party will put an active member of its ranks on the ballot as its candidate, and no one else, which would leave those who have allied themselves with them without aspirations. That’s why there’s alarm, for example, among PRI members who were hoping that Alessandra Rojo de la Vega, who has done everything to be seen as a female version of Bukele, the fiercest representative of the reactionary forces, wouldn’t be able to meet the PAN’s requirements, even though, we’re told, she’s already promised total impunity to the corrupt PAN members. We shall see.

This article by César Arellano García originally appeared in the December 14, 2025 edition of La Jornada, Mexico’s premier left wing daily newspaper.

Mexico City. The call from the self-proclaimed ‘Generation Z’ movement to participate today in the so-called National March of Silence for Peace failed to attract a significant number of people.

There were an average of 250 people on Paseo de la Reforma, according to members of the Mexico City police.

The participants departed from the Angel of Independence after 11 a.m., heading towards the Palace of Fine Arts. Iván Rejón, spokesperson for the organization, indicated that they would not reach the Zócalo, as the Historic Center has been under lockdown since yesterday by Mexico City authorities.

He reiterated that among the demands of the movement is the establishment of a dialogue table with the federal government and an end to the disappearances of people in the country.

During their silent march, the protesters carried Mexican flags and even a banner with the image of the Virgin Mary. They also displayed signs with slogans against the federal government.

“What people are demanding is the ability to be represented and to raise their voices. The government has closed spaces; we understand the argument of protection, but it is failing to listen to those it least considers,” added Iván Rejón.

Passing the Senate of the Republic, the silence of the protest was broken for a few minutes, when the demonstrators, mostly adults, began to shout “Out with Morena, out with Morena!”

During the journey, a few people watched from the sidewalks, taking photos and videos with their cell phones, but they did not join the march.

Members of the self-proclaimed ‘Generation Z’ movement arrived at the corner of Eje Central Lázaro Cárdenas and Avenida 5 de Mayo, where they continued their protest. This main thoroughfare was already closed before they arrived.

However, the decision not to continue to the Zócalo in the capital due to the installation of a Christmas market generated division with people of other generations, especially older adults who accompanied them during the journey, who insisted on continuing forward, as some young people with their faces covered and dressed in black, asked people to walk to the main square of the city.

At the height of Avenida Juárez, the protesters made a stop where Iván Rejón spoke again.

He reiterated that the issues “that pain Mexico” are the crisis of disappearances. “We’re talking about a cancer that has been going on for more than 21 years… we are all tired of it, young people, adults, the elderly, and children alike. We are all victims of the violence in Mexico, and despite the changes and transformations, everything remains practically the same. For us, it is very important to carry out civic representation.”

He indicated that although the march did not attract as many people as the one on November 15, “on social media we are more than 3,000 on Facebook and in Mexico we are 130 million people who are tired of knowing that at any moment we can suffer violence.”

“We are against the government celebrating that there is a transformation; we are not against any political party directly. We are against the inefficiency, the lack of response from the authorities to provide a decisive solution to the crisis that exists and that we continue to experience. That is why we must raise our voices and represent all those who are missing,” he added.

Around 50 people continued demonstrating on Eje Central Avenue, next to the Palace of Fine Arts, and left around 2 p.m.

A limited review undermines trust as presidential candidates allege fraud in Nov. 30 election.

On Sunday, Marlon Ochoa, a member of the Honduran National Electoral Council (CNE), rejected a new attempt to avoid transparency in the results of the general elections held Nov. 30.

RELATED:

Honduras Election Interference: 6 Official Complaints Expose Trump’s “Brazen” Involvement

During a CNE plenary session, Ochoa denounced “scandalous inconsistencies” recorded during the election and proposed counting all presidential votes cast at the 19,167 polling stations nationwide.

His proposal, however, was not accepted by the other two CNE members, Ana Paola Hall and Cossette Lopez, who decided to carry out a special review of only 1,081 tally sheets. Their decision limits the review of inconsistencies to just 5.6% of the total number of tally sheets.

“If the council is not willing to verify everything, then it is not in a position to ask the people to blindly trust the result,” Ochoa said, addding that reviewing only those 1,081 tally sheets is insufficient given the thousands of irregularities detected in the results transmission system.

He pointed out that 17,036 tally sheets show some type of inconsistency. Of that total, 14,073 tally sheets show serious discrepancies when compared with data produced by the biometric identification system, raising doubts about the identity of registered voters or the validity of the votes cast.

The text reads, “The Honduran Congress is giving a lesson in dignity to Argentina and other Latin American countries by declaring that it will not validate the 2025 elections, which were a fraud organized by criminal networks linked to drug trafficking and supported by Donald Trump.”

Another 1,882 tally sheets contain procedural and substantive errors that cannot be ignored. These include missing required signatures on the documents, clear mathematical errors in vote totals, and signs of disorder or manipulation, such as the delivery of tally sheets to the relevant authorities outside the required time frames and procedures.

Under current regulations, the electoral council has until Dec. 30 to officially declare the winner of Honduras’ presidential election. According to the most recent preliminary vote count, Nasry Asfura, the candidate of the right-wing National Party, has 40.53% of the vote.

Salvador Nasralla of the conservative Liberal Party has 39.1%, and Rixi Moncada of the Liberty and Refoundation Party has 19.30%. Both Moncada and Nasralla have alleged fraud, citing multiple irregularities, and have demanded that the electoral council conduct a thorough and accurate recount.

Unions warn museum may not open as staff demand guarantees after proposed funding cuts.

At a general assembly held Monday morning, the 400 workers at Paris’ Louvre Museum voted “unanimously” to continue their strike to demand better working conditions and proper maintenance of the facilities.

“There is such a level of exasperation that everything indicates the conditions are in place for a very strong strike,” said Christian Galani, a representative of the General Confederation of Labor (CGT), one of the organizations that, together with the French Democratic Confederation of Labor (CFDT) and the Solidarity, Unitary and Democratic union (SUD), called the strike at the Louvre.

“We are preparing for a strong mobilization on Monday. We will have many more strikers than usual,” he said, recalling that last week the unions met with Culture Minister Rachida Dati in an attempt to avert the strike.

“According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, the French culture minister promised to review a 5.7 million euro cut in public funding for the Louvre planned in the 2026 finance bill,” Publico reported.

The text reads, “‘They’re right. We need to put pressure on the Culture Ministry.’ The Louvre is closed due to an ongoing strike. Since the robbery on October 19, the world’s largest museum has gone through a turbulent period, plagued by a series of breakdowns.”

“I don’t see how, under these conditions, the museum can open,” Galani said in front of the iconic pyramid that serves as the institution’s entrance. The end of the strike “will depend on whether we have clear guarantees commensurate with the challenges,” said Elise Muller, the SUD representative.

Dati pledged to abandon the budget cuts, but the unions are demanding that the money be allocated to maintaining the museum rather than to the planned renovation, which they argue will not improve the institution’s overall conditions.

In their sights is the museum’s current director, Laurence des Cars, whom they accuse of prioritizing major spectacles instead of addressing the museum’s necessary rehabilitation.

The strike that began this Monday took some tourists by surprise. “I didn’t know there was a strike,” said Michael Gamer, a tourist who arrived from Texas and said he was unaware of the reasons for the walkout, though he expressed understanding for the workers. “In general, I support strikes. It’s probably because something needs to change,” he stated.

The Asian country proposes programs focused on solidarity, development, civilizations, peace, and peoples.

On Dec. 10, China presented its Third Policy Document towards Latin America and the Caribbean, which seeks mutual cooperation and respect.

RELATED:

China Seeks to Prevent U.S.-Venezuela Escalation

The Document proposes collaboration in areas where China has significant expertise. With this roadmap, President Xi Jinping seeks to enhance relations with Latin America, where trade exceeded US$500 billion in 2024.

The updated policy document highlights that Latin America and the Caribbean have “promising” development prospects and are an indispensable force in global multipolarization.

China proposes five programs focused on solidarity, development, civilizations, peace, and peoples. In the first one, the country reaffirms the “One-China” principle and promotes consultation mechanisms with Latin American and Caribbean countries.

The Chinese government appreciates that most LATAM countries support the One-China principle and reiterates that Taiwan is an inalienable part of its national territory.

China also seeks to facilitate the transfer of goods and services, promote free trade agreements, sign investment protection agreements, support Chinese companies in LATAM, and contribute to local employment.

The policy document proposes collaboration between Chinese institutions and their regional counterparts, which expands work in oil, natural gas, clean energy sources, and nuclear cooperation for peaceful purposes.

China plans to boost infrastructure, manufacturing, agriculture, digital, and exchanges to address extreme climates. It proposes joint laboratories, research centers, and high-tech industrial parks with universities and innovative companies.

In the programs for civilizations, peace, and peoples, China seeks to combat drug trafficking, support the proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a “Zone of Peace,” and develop military cooperation.

They stated that this attack in international waters of the Caribbean Sea, off the Venezuelan coast, is a flagrant violation of international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Maritime Navigation (SUA Convention).

The document underscored, “Such actions not only threaten the sovereignty of Venezuela and Cuba, but also undermine the principles of peace and cooperation that should tule international relations.”

ACCRA also urged the international community, academic institutions, and multilateral organizations to speak out against these illegal practices and defend respect for sovereignty, peace, and cooperation among nations.

The theft, on December 10, of an oil tanker off the Venezuelan coast, in a military operation publicly confirmed by US President Donald Trump, has generated international condemnation.

The Group of Friends in Defense of the United Nations Charter described the action as a new unilateral act of coercion against Venezuela and warned that it “is a serious violation of international law, including the property right.”

This support prevailed among those attending the 2025 annual review of the solidarity movement with the island, held at the Cuban Embassy in El Salvador this weekend, where representatives from diverse groups that showed their support for the Cuban people in the year attended the event.

For months, Salvadoran solidarity activists stood shoulder to shoulder with the Cuban people in numerous efforts to ensure that “Cuba remains standing strong” in the face of US aggression, as evidenced by a video compilation of their many acts of solidarity.

From the celebration of Jose Marti’s 172nd birthday in the square where his bust stands in this capital’s historic district, the participation in the “Marathon of Love for Cuba,” to the Apostle’s 130th death anniversary in combat, Salvadorans have been present in their support for the island.

A discussion among students from the University of El Salvador and representatives of the solidarity movement highlighted the historical legacy of Jose Marti.

The tribute to the eternal legacy of Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro on his 9th death anniversary, the commemoration of the anniversary of the attacks on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Cespedes garrisons, Fidel’s 99th birthday, among other activities, conformed the solidarity with Cuba.

This on-line meeting, held vwith its nine member countries, was inspired by the example of revolutionary dignity and unwavering defense of sovereignty of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and in the context of his 100th birthday to be celebrated in 2026.

The 13-point final declaration of the 15th Summit of the ALBA-TCP reaffirmed the unwavering commitment to further deepening the Bolivarian doctrine, thought, and action.

It deemed it “incompatible with any form of hegemony, domination, or imperial tutelage,” a fundamental pillar that inspired Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez to found the Bolivarian Alliance.

It condemned in the strongest terms the declared purpose of the recently published United States National Security Strategy, aimed at reaffirming the “obsolete and historically defeated Monroe Doctrine.”

It also censured the act of piracy committed by the United States government in attacking and seizing a Venezuelan oil tanker in the Caribbean Sea, an act it considered a violation of international law and an attack on the sovereignty of the Bolivarian Republic.

The ALBA-TCP declaration demanded Cuba’s exclusion from “Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list” and highlighted the achievements of Nicaragua’s Government of National Reconciliation in building a sovereign economy, in a country that is increasingly free, Christian, and socialist.

The EU Council approved sanctions against individuals and entities supporting the Russian shadow fleet.

On Sunday, Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov criticized NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte’s recent remarks urging alliance members to prepare for a large-scale conflict with Russia as “irresponsible.”

In a speech on Dec. 11, Rutte warned member countries to prepare for a possible war on a scale similar to that “our grandparents or great-grandparents endured,” adding that NATO could become “Russia’s next target.”

The NATO chief “simply does not understand what he is talking about,” and his remarks appeared to be made by “a person from the generation that has forgotten what World War II was like,” Peskov said, emphasizing that Russians remember the horrors of war and cherish the legacy of their forefathers and the sacrifices made to save Europe from fascism.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently declared that Russia is prepared to “document in any form” its commitment not to attack Europe.

On Monday, the European Union’s foreign ministers approved sanctions against five individuals and four entities responsible for supporting Russia’s shadow fleet and its value chain. The European Union Council indicated that the individuals sanctioned are businesspeople directly or indirectly linked to the major Russian state-owned oil companies Rosneft and Lukoil.

“They are all involved in an economic sector that provides significant sources of revenue to the Government of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, they control ships transporting crude oil or petroleum products, originating in or exported from Russia, concealing the true origin of the oil, while carrying out irregular and high-risk maritime practices,” the EU Council stated.

Regarding the sanctioned entities, they are “shipping companies based in the United Arab Emirates, Vietnam, and Russia that own or operate oil tankers subject to restrictive measures imposed by the EU or other countries for being part of the Russian shadow fleet, and that transport crude oil or petroleum products using irregular and high-risk maritime practices.”

‘Yankees out of the Caribbean’ was the chant shouted at the protests in Santo Domingo.

Following the Dominican government’s recent decision to temporarily grant the U.S. access to an air force base and the country’s main international airport under the pretext of “combating drug trafficking,” several U.S. military aircraft have arrived in the Dominican Republic, drawing widespread attention.

Dominican Republic President Enacts Law to Reform Criminal Procedures

Experts have said the latest U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean is vast in scale and has heightened regional sensitivity. Dominican society, shaped by the historical memory of the 1965 U.S. military intervention, has reacted with unease to the presence of foreign troops.

In recent days, large military aircraft have landed at Dominican airports. Fuel tanker trucks, buses, vans, light vehicles, communications equipment and other military supplies were seen in surrounding areas under tight security measures.

Many sectors argue that although the operations are presented as part of anti-drug cooperation, their impact goes far beyond technical law enforcement.

— Ed (@Wiski1) December 13, 2025

Following the arrival of the first military aircraft, the National Popular Coordination staged a civic protest in the capital, Santo Domingo, where demonstrators chanted slogans such as “Yankees out of the Caribbean.”

The group said the U.S. military presence at airports and strategic infrastructure constitutes an “unacceptable intrusion” that could embroil the country in regional tensions and jeopardize peace in Latin America.

Manolo Pichardo, former president of the Central American Parliament, said public concern is shaped by historical memory, noting that U.S. military interventions have left deep scars, with memories of the violence and loss in 1965 still passed down across generations.

“These painful events remain present … in the collective memory of Dominicans,” he said, addint that the controversy over the U.S. military presence extends beyond drug control, human rights or democracy, and reflects Washington’s broader regional and global geopolitical strategy.

He warned that alleged anti-drug operations, which may involve violations of international law such as extrajudicial killings, could entail future legal consequences for both the United States and the Dominican Republic — an aspect often overlooked in such debates.

Central American Parliament lawmaker Esmeralda Mancebo said the official justification of combating drug trafficking is unconvincing. “Paradoxically, they are fighting drug trafficking abroad when we do not see equivalent actions inside the United States, where the drugs ultimately arrive. Every power in a period of decline ends up in war,” she said.

🚨🇺🇸 This isn’t interdiction anymore; this is pre-strike positioning.

Eduardo Klinger, a member of the Dominican Academy of Sciences, said the U.S. deployment represents “the largest armed positioning in the Caribbean since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.” Although the operations are not officially described as military actions, he warned that they could escalate into confrontations, including indiscriminate attacks on suspected vessels.

Klinger added that the Dominican Republic has been internationally praised for its anti-drug efforts in recent years, raising questions about the necessity of granting U.S. access to Dominican airports and concerns about being drawn into a controversial regional operation that could worsen tensions with Venezuela.

Mihail Garcia, a senior leader of Fuerza del Pueblo, said the Dominican Republic has a tradition of mediating regional conflicts, recalling its role as the “Capital of Peace,” including hosting the 2008 Rio Group summit, which helped defuse tensions between Ecuador, Venezuela and Colombia. “That is the role the Dominican Republic should continue to play,” Garcia said.

Because of this tradition, many sectors fear the country could now be perceived as aligning itself with military escalation, a shift from its historical stance as a peacebroker. As U.S. logistical operations continue at the country’s San Isidro and Las Americas airports, the debate over the Dominican Republic’s role, regional stability and its historical memory intensifies.

Experts agree that amid a complex geopolitical landscape, it is essential for the Dominican Republic to preserve Caribbean stability and avoid becoming entangled in conflicts unrelated to its national interests.

A mass shooting in an academic building left two students dead and nine others injured.

On Sunday, U.S. Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha said that law enforcement authorities will shortly release a person of interest detained earlier in the day in connection with the Brown University mass shooting. Evidence “now points in a different direction,” and the search for the gunman who remains at large will continue, he said.

Brown University Shooting: Person of Interest Captured After 2 Dead, 9 Wounded in Audacious Campus Rampage

Brett Smiley, mayor of Providence, capital of the state of Rhode Island, said earlier Sunday that authorities had detained a person of interest in the Brown University shooting and that a shelter-in-place order for the university and surrounding areas had been lifted.

Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez had previously told media that police were confident the detained individual was the shooter.

A shooting occurred Saturday afternoon in an academic building at Brown University, leaving at least two students dead and nine others injured. Smiley said Sunday night that although the gunman remains at large, the local community is currently safe.

He emphasized that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted because police had received no credible threats against the Brown University community, the city of Providence, or the broader Rhode Island community since the shooting, and that this assessment has not changed.

“We are not recommending at this time a new shelter-in-place. We do not feel it is necessary,” Smiley said, adding that police will increase their presence in and around Providence and the Brown University campus, and again urged the public to submit any videos that could assist the investigation.

Brown University is one of the United States’ eight Ivy League schools, with about 7,300 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students. Saturday marked the second day of the university’s final examinations for the fall semester.

Sudan and South Sudan strengthen economic ties in energy, oil, and trade, signaling a shift toward pragmatic cooperation.

Sudan and South Sudan agreed on Sunday to deepen cooperation in key economic sectors, with their leaders issuing directives to strengthen collaboration in energy, oil, and trade; which signals an effort to stabilize relations amid Sudan’s internal conflict and humanitarian crisis unfolding in El Fasher, North Darfur.

The agreement was formalized during a meeting between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereign Council, and a South Sudanese delegation led by Presidential Security Advisor Tut Gatluak.

Gatluak delivered an official written message from South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit focused on enhancing bilateral ties.

South Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Monday Semaya Kumba, described the discussions as “very fruitful, very transparent, and very promising”.

Both nations’ economies have a symbiotic relationship through oil: South Sudan is heavily dependent on exports for revenue, while Sudan benefits from transit fees collected from the flow of crude to international markets, according to Pipeline Journal.

Moving beyond a history marked by disputes over borders and oil wealth since the 2011 split, Sudan and South Sudan are now steering diplomacy toward pragmatic cooperation rather than political rivalry.
