The open forum will take place this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in Camaguey’s emblematic Plaza de la Libertad, precisely where tomorrow the triumphant passage of the Caravan of Liberty, led by Fidel Castro after the revolutionary triumph of 1959, will be commemorated.

The call is being made jointly by the leadership of the Communist Party, the Young Communist League, and mass organizations in the province.

The gathering will reaffirm the unwavering support and solidarity of the Cuban people with the Bolivarian Revolution and its legitimate government.

With the slogan “Venezuela is not alone,” Camaguey will raise its voice to denounce foreign interference and reaffirm the unity between the two nations.

Addressing hundreds of Havana residents gathered at Anti-Imperialist Tribune, Gonzalez condemned the attack perpetrated in the early hours of January 3 by the United States government against Venezuela.

The Hero of the Republic also described the aggression as “cowardly and vile,” and stressed that it is not an isolated incident, but rather an escalation in the prolonged economic, media, diplomatic, and now openly military war that Washington has waged with the aim of subjugating a sovereign people and destroying the Bolivarian Revolution.

“This military aggression transcends Venezuelan borders. It is a direct attack on the pillars of International Law, the principle of self-determination of peoples, and the historical aspiration of Latin America and the Caribbean to consolidate itself as a Zone of Peace,” he stated.

The president of ICAP denounced that the bombings against Caracas and other regions of the country demonstrate who promotes terror, while the kidnappings, piracy in the Caribbean, and systematic human rights violations against migrants reveal “the fascist nature” of the administration occupying the White House.

He pointed out that the armed offensive is a response to the application of the “Trump Corollary” of the Monroe Doctrine, aimed at appropriating the natural resources of Venezuela and the entire region.

Given this scenario, he reiterated his unwavering solidarity with the “heroic and brave Venezuelan people” and supported the demand made by Venezuelan Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez for the United States government to provide “proof of life” of President Nicolas Maduro Moros and his wife, Silvia Flores. jdt/arc/mks

Padrino denounced the “criminal military aggression” against his country and reported that data is being gathered on the wounded and dead following the attack, which he described as vile and cowardly.

The Venezuelan Defense Minister urged the international community and multilateral organizations to condemn the US government for what he called a flagrant violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law.

Padrino announced that the Bolivarian National Armed Forces will fully support the decree declaring a state of external emergency and will deploy all their capabilities for the comprehensive defense of the nation.

He also pointed out that a massive deployment of land, air, naval, riverine, and missile forces would be activated, in perfect popular, military, and police unity, to form a single combat bloc against imperial threats.

Caracas denounced that the objective of the attacks perpetrated in the early morning was to seize the country’s strategic resources, particularly its oil and minerals, and to forcibly break the nation’s political independence.

Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council this Saturday and affirmed that the aggression against his country and the kidnapping of its president constitute a violation of international law and the Charter of that multilateral organization. jdt/arc/evm

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs referred to the dire humanitarian situation facing Gazans amid severe weather conditions and continued restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry of aid.

It called on Israel to remove all obstacles preventing the sufficient, immediate, and sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian enclave.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Fouad Majali warned that Gaza is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis as a result of the extensive destruction caused by Israeli aggression and the persistent obstruction of humanitarian aid.

The official stressed that these circumstances demand urgent international intervention to compel Israel to open all border crossings and allow adequate assistance to reach all areas of the Gaza Strip.

Majali insisted on the need for Israel to comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law, refrain from obstructing humanitarian access, and facilitate relief and assistance operations for the Gazan population.

He also emphasized the importance of allowing UN agencies, particularly the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as well as international non-governmental organizations, to continue their work throughout Gaza, given the extremely difficult conditions faced by its inhabitants.

China condemns U.S. attack on Venezuela in defense of international law and sovereignty

China condemns US attack on Venezuela as a violation of sovereignty and UN Charter. Global South unites against unilateral military aggression.

5 Shocking Reasons China Condemns US Attack on Venezuela as Illegal and Dangerous

China Condemns US Attack on Venezuela

China condemns US attack on Venezuela in the strongest possible terms following Washington’s large-scale military incursion on Venezuelan soil early Saturday, January 3, 2026. In an official statement issued from Beijing, the Chinese government denounced the operation—which reportedly led to the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores—as a “flagrant use of force against a sovereign state” and a direct assault on the foundational pillars of the international legal order.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry labeled the action “hegemonic” and warned it endangers not only Venezuela’s sovereignty but the broader stability of Latin America and the Caribbean—a region long declared a “zone of peace” by its governments. According to Beijing, the U.S. strikes on both military and civilian infrastructure represent a systematic violation of the United Nations Charter and a dangerous precedent that could unravel decades of diplomatic consensus in the Global South.

This condemnation is not merely rhetorical. It reflects China’s deep strategic alignment with Venezuela on issues of sovereignty, anti-imperialism, and multilateralism. In recent years, the two nations have strengthened cooperation across energy, finance, and defense, often positioning themselves as counterweights to Western-led sanctions and regime-change policies. Now, China condemns U.S. attack on Venezuela as both a moral imperative and a defense of a rules-based world order that Washington appears determined to dismantle.

China Condemns US Attack on Venezuela as Hegemonic Violation of International Law

In its formal communiqué, Beijing accused the United States of deploying “hegemony under the guise of security,” highlighting how the military operation breaches core principles of the UN Charter, particularly Article 2(4), which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

The Chinese statement emphasized the targeting of civilian infrastructure—including power grids and residential areas—as especially alarming. “Such actions do not restore order; they sow chaos, suffering, and long-term destabilization,” the document read. By attacking non-military sites, Beijing argues, the U.S. has crossed a red line that separates legitimate security operations from acts of aggression that may constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law.

China’s position aligns with longstanding jurisprudence from the International Court of Justice, which has consistently held that unilateral military interventions—regardless of stated intent—violate international law unless authorized by the UN Security Council. Notably, no such authorization was sought or granted in this case, rendering the operation legally indefensible from Beijing’s perspective.

Furthermore, China warned that this intervention fits a disturbing historical pattern: U.S.-led regime change operations in Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa that have repeatedly triggered humanitarian crises, refugee flows, and prolonged instability. “When powerful nations bypass international institutions to impose their will by force,” the statement cautioned, “they do not bring democracy—they export destruction.”

Global South Unites Against U.S. Military Aggression

China’s condemnation arrives amid a rapid and coordinated diplomatic backlash from across the Global South. From Tehran to Montevideo, capitals are denouncing the U.S. attack on Venezuela as a direct threat to the principle of non-intervention—a cornerstone of post-colonial diplomacy. Russia has labeled the operation “armed aggression,” while Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel called it “state terrorism.” Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for an emergency UN session to halt the escalation.

Beijing positioned its response within this broader coalition, stressing that Latin America’s declaration as a “zone of peace” must be respected. “The peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean have the right to determine their own destiny without external interference,” the Chinese statement affirmed, echoing language used by regional bodies like CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States).

As a leading advocate for multipolarity and South-South cooperation, China sees this moment as a critical test of whether international law will apply equally—or only to the weak. The PRC reaffirmed its strategic partnership with Venezuela, recalling years of mutual support in multilateral forums and joint resistance to unilateral sanctions. “Caracas is not alone,” the statement implied. “It stands with a growing front of nations committed to sovereignty over subjugation.”

Notably, even traditionally neutral actors are breaking ranks. Spanish MEP Irene Montero demanded her government sever ties with NATO, declaring, “The U.S. is a danger. Either we stop them, or they’ll burn everything down.” In Uruguay, while the official government remains silent, prominent figures from the ruling Frente Amplio—such as Rafael Michelini—have called for “total and radical condemnation,” warning that “the prairie of Latin America has been set on fire.”

Geopolitical Context: A Multipolar World Pushes Back

The U.S. attack on Venezuela—and China’s forceful response—marks a pivotal moment in 21st-century geopolitics. For decades, Washington treated Latin America as its “backyard,” intervening with relative impunity. But today’s landscape is fundamentally different. China, Russia, Iran, and regional powers have deepened ties with Caracas, transforming Venezuela into a strategic node in a multipolar network that challenges U.S. dominance.

Beijing’s condemnation is thus both principled and strategic. On one level, it defends the norm of non-intervention that protects smaller states—including, potentially, China itself—from foreign coercion. On another, it reinforces Beijing’s image as a responsible global actor that champions dialogue over bombs, law over might.

Critically, this crisis occurs as global trust in U.S. leadership continues to erode. From climate inaction to endless wars, many nations now view Washington not as a guarantor of peace, but as a source of volatility. China’s stance seeks to capitalize on this disillusionment, offering an alternative vision rooted in mutual respect, economic cooperation, and legal restraint.

If the United Nations fails to act decisively—by condemning the attack, demanding accountability, and ensuring Venezuela’s sovereignty is restored—it may accelerate the very fragmentation the institution was designed to prevent. In that sense, China condemns U.S. attack on Venezuela not just for Caracas’s sake, but for the future of international order itself.

China’s Official Response: “Blatant Use of Force Against a Sovereign State”

Adding further weight to its diplomatic stance, China’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson issued a direct and unequivocal response during a press briefing on January 3, 2026, when asked about reports of U.S. military strikes on Venezuela and former President Donald Trump’s claim on Truth Social that Maduro and his wife had been “successfully” captured and “flown out of the country.”

“China is deeply shocked by and strongly condemns the U.S.’s blatant use of force against a sovereign state and action against its president,” the spokesperson stated. “Such hegemonic acts of the U.S. seriously violate international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty, and threaten peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean region. China firmly opposes it.”

The spokesperson went on to stress that Washington must “abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and stop violating other countries’ sovereignty and security.” This official Q&A—widely circulated by Chinese state media—serves as the clearest articulation yet of Beijing’s rejection of what it frames not as a security operation, but as an act of imperial overreach that endangers the entire regional order. By explicitly referencing Trump’s social media post, China also underscored the volatility of treating geopolitical decisions as political theater—a critique increasingly echoed across the Global South.

Conclusion: Sovereignty as the Last Line of Defense

As smoke rises over Caracas and diplomatic cables flood UN headquarters, one message echoes from Beijing with unwavering clarity: sovereignty is non-negotiable. China’s condemnation of the U.S. attack on Venezuela is more than a defense of an ally—it is a stand for a world where nations, regardless of size or ideology, are shielded from the sword of unilateral power.

China condemns U.S. attack on Venezuela because it sees in this moment the ghost of interventions past—and the shadow of crises yet to come. But it also sees an opportunity: to rally the Global South, uphold the UN Charter, and prove that another world is not only possible, but already being built, one act of solidarity at a time.

Those responsible for the aggression are war criminals, the Bolivarian diplomat stressed.

On Saturday, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil stated that the U.S. military aggression against Venezuelan territory, along with the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, has revealed the true face of imperialism.

In remarks to teleSUR, the top diplomat asserted that those responsible for these acts are “the true aggressors and war criminals” and demanded proof that the Venezuelan leader and the first lady are alive.

Gil said this vile and criminal attack has the central objective of seizing Venezuela’s strategic natural resources. To this end, the Trump administration has been spreading false narratives to justify its criminal actions within Venezuelan territory.

“Venezuela remains firm in the defense of its sovereignty and of the peace championed by President Maduro,” the diplomat said, reaffirming the determination of the Bolivarian government and people to confront any attempt at foreign subjugation.

The US government bombed Venezuela, and Trump kidnapped President Nicolás Maduro and flew him out of the country to be tried in a show trial on politically motivated charges.

“We know that behind this attack there is no other reason, no other motive, than the intention to appropriate natural wealth,” Gil said and lamented that the attack occurred just hours after President Maduro issued a message in favor of peace, dialogue and diplomacy.

“We are for peace and democracy, but we are also firm in defending our nation. We also know where the aggressors are,” the Venezuelan foreign minister said.

For several weeks, Venezuela had been denouncing before various international forums an escalation of U.S. illegal actions, including veiled threats, intimidating military movements and covert operations aimed at destabilizing the South American country.

Venezuelan authorities repeatedly warned that these maneuvers violate international law and the United Nations Charter, while alerting about the risk of direct aggression.

The U.S. military attack on Jan. 3 confirms the prior denunciations and demonstrates that the pressure strategy against Venezuela has escalated into open criminal action.

“He was in a dwelling that looked more like a fortress than a house. It had steel doors. It had what they call a safe room, with solid steel all around. He didn’t manage to close that room. He was trying to get in, but they surprised him so fast he couldn’t enter,” he said.

“We were prepared. We had, you know, huge blowtorches and everything needed to cut through that steel. But we didn’t need it. He didn’t make it to that part of the house,” the Republican leader added.

Trump also admitted that the U.S. military had planned to carry out the aggression against Venezuela “four days ago,” but the armed action was postponed due to bad weather.

“The weather has to be perfect. And we had perfect weather. We had, you know, a very good one. A few more clouds than we expected. It was fine. We waited four days. We were going to do it four days ago, three days ago, two days ago. And suddenly, the window opened and we said go. And I’ll tell you, it was just incredible,” he said.

Trump announced that President Maduro and his wife were taken “out of the country” after the U.S. attack, an operation that affected Caracas and the states of Miranda, La Guaira and Aragua. U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said that they “will soon face the full force of American justice on American soil and in American courts.”

“Nicolas Maduro has been charged with narco-terrorism conspiracy, conspiracy to import cocaine, possession of machine guns and destructive devices, and conspiracy to possess machine guns and destructive devices against the United States,” Bondi said, indicating that both the Venezuelan leader and the first lady were charged in the Southern District of New York.

The Venezuelan government issued a statement on Saturday following the first U.S. airstrike against Caracas: “This act constitutes a flagrant violation of the UN Charter, specifically its Articles 1 and 2, which enshrine respect for sovereignty, the legal equality of States, and the prohibition of the use of force. Such aggression threatens international peace and stability, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean, and gravely endangers the lives of millions of people.”

Iran condemns US attack on Venezuela in defense of sovereignty and international law

Iran condemns US attack on Venezuela as illegal aggression violating UN Charter and global sovereignty. Discover Tehran’s diplomatic stance.

Related: 5 Alarming Truths: Mexico Condemns US Military Intervention in Venezuela as UN Charter Breach

5 Reasons Iran Condemns US Attack on Venezuela as a Global Threat

Iran condemns U.S. attack on Venezuela as a flagrant breach of international law and a dangerous escalation that threatens the foundations of the global order. On January 3, 2026, the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a forceful statement in response to Washington’s large-scale military operation on Venezuelan soil—an assault that, according to the White House, resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

From Tehran’s perspective, this is not merely a regional crisis. It is a systemic rupture with implications that extend far beyond Latin America. The Iranian Foreign Ministry framed the offensive as a textbook case of unilateral aggression, echoing historical patterns of imperial intervention that have long destabilized the Global South. In doing so, Iran positioned itself not only as a regional power but as a principled voice defending the sanctity of state sovereignty against military hegemony.

The gravity of Iran’s condemnation lies not just in its rhetoric but in its legal grounding. Tehran explicitly cited Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state. According to Iran, the U.S. strikes—reportedly targeting civilian infrastructure alongside military installations—constitute an “unequivocal act of aggression” that must be met with immediate international censure and legal accountability.

Iran Condemns US Attack on Venezuela as Illegal Under International Law

The Iranian Foreign Ministry’s statement, released on Saturday, January 3, 2026, pulled no punches. “This criminal, cowardly, and terrorist act by the United States violates every principle of international coexistence,” the document declared—words that closely mirror those used by Venezuelan Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello in Caracas hours earlier.

Iran emphasized the illegality of targeting civilian infrastructure, including electrical grids and residential zones, actions it described as potential war crimes under the Geneva Conventions. Tehran rejected any justification based on regime change or alleged humanitarian concerns, stressing that only the UN Security Council holds the legitimate authority to authorize the use of force—and even then, only as a last resort.

The International Court of Justice has repeatedly affirmed that unilateral military interventions, regardless of motive, violate the core tenets of the UN Charter. Iran’s stance aligns with this jurisprudence, positioning the U.S. operation not as an isolated incident but as part of a broader erosion of multilateralism. “When powerful states bypass the Security Council,” the statement warned, “they don’t restore order—they incite chaos.”

Crucially, Iran also underscored Venezuela’s inherent right to self-defense and resistance against foreign occupation—a principle enshrined in both international law and the historical consciousness of post-colonial states. By doing so, Tehran reinforced its long-standing advocacy for the Global South’s right to political autonomy, free from external coercion.

Iran Joins Global South Coalition Against U.S. Military Aggression

While Western media have focused on the tactical details of the U.S. operation, Iran’s diplomatic response underscores a deeper geopolitical realignment. Tehran’s condemnation places it firmly within a growing coalition of nations—including Russia, China, Cuba, and Colombia—that view the attack as a direct threat to regional peace and global legal norms.

Iran and Venezuela have cultivated close strategic ties for over two decades, particularly through their shared membership in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and their mutual opposition to U.S.-led sanctions regimes. In this context, Iran’s statement is both principled and pragmatic: it defends a key ally while reinforcing its own narrative as a champion of anti-imperialist sovereignty.

As a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, Iran has consistently opposed unilateral military interventions—from Iraq to Libya to Syria. The current crisis in Venezuela is seen through that same lens: not as a domestic political issue, but as a test of whether international law applies equally to all nations, or only to the weak.

Notably, Iran called on all UN member states to fulfill their “legal and moral duty” by demanding an immediate ceasefire, the withdrawal of U.S. forces, and accountability for those responsible for planning and executing the operation. It also urged the Security Council to invoke Chapter VII—not to authorize further force, but to sanction the aggressor and protect the sovereignty of the victim.

This stance resonates across Latin America, where leaders like Gustavo Petro of Colombia and Miguel Díaz-Canel of Cuba have echoed Iran’s concerns. Even within traditionally neutral countries like Uruguay, political figures from the ruling Frente Amplio—such as Rafael Michelini—have echoed Tehran’s alarm, warning that “the prairie of Latin America has been set on fire.”

Geopolitical Context: Iran’s Message to the World

Iran Condemns US Attack on Venezuela

Iran’s condemnation of the U.S. attack on Venezuela carries layered implications. At a time when Tehran faces its own threats of military action—particularly from Israel and hardliners in Washington—its vocal defense of Caracas serves as both a warning and a mirror. By highlighting the illegality of unilateral force, Iran seeks to reinforce norms that could one day protect its own sovereignty.

Moreover, the timing is significant. With Venezuela’s vast oil reserves and strategic location, the U.S. incursion risks triggering a wider confrontation involving Russia, China, and other non-Western powers. Iran’s intervention in the diplomatic arena aims to prevent escalation while strengthening South-South solidarity.

In essence, Iran is not just defending Venezuela—it is defending a vision of international order based on equality, mutual respect, and adherence to law, rather than power projection and regime change. In an era of resurgent great-power rivalry, that message carries weight far beyond the Middle East or Latin America.

Conclusion: A Sovereignty Line in the Sand

Iran condemns U.S. attack on Venezuela not out of blind allegiance, but as a matter of principle rooted in decades of anti-imperialist foreign policy. In a world where unilateralism increasingly masquerades as “strategic necessity,” Tehran’s statement is a stark reminder that sovereignty remains the bedrock of international peace.

Whether the UN will act—or whether the Global South can mount a coordinated response—remains uncertain. But one thing is clear: Iran has drawn a line in the sand, and it stands not alone, but alongside a growing bloc of nations determined to uphold the Charter that Washington now appears to have discarded.

The Bolivarian organization condemns “cowardly” attack.

On Saturday, the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) denounced the U.S. cowardly military aggression against the South American nation, which included the kidnapping of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

“Faced with such a grave attack on our sovereignty, the PSUV calls for the immediate mobilization of all its members… In absolute unity, under the orders of our High Command, we, the Venezuelan men and women, are prepared to defend our country against any type of foreign attack,” the PSUV stated. It demanded that U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration prove that Maduro and his wife are alive.

“We are the party founded by Commander Hugo Chavez, the political and moral vanguard of the Bolivarian Revolution. That is why we close ranks, today more than ever, with the Bolivarian government and express our absolute loyalty to President Nicolas Maduro,” the PSUV added.

The Socialist party called on governments and the international community to “express total condemnation” of the U.S. “grotesque” military action, which “violates the United Nations Charter and tramples international law.”

Uruguay condemns US military intervention in Venezuela, reaffirming Latin America’s status as a Zone of Peace and upholding international law.

Uruguay condemns US military intervention in Venezuela, reaffirming Latin America as a Zone of Peace and demanding strict adherence to international law.

Related: Russia Condemns U.S. Strikes on Venezuela as ‘Armed Aggression’

Montevideo, January 3, 2026 — The Government of the Oriental Republic of Uruguay issued a formal statement on Saturday expressing its “serious concern” and categorical rejection of the United States’ recent military intervention in Venezuela, following reports of aerial strikes against both military installations and civilian infrastructure in the South American nation. In a strongly worded communiqué, Uruguay’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed that Latin America and the Caribbean must remain a Zone of Peace, and condemned the attacks as a clear violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental principles of international law.

“Uruguay rejects, as it has always done, the military intervention of one country on the territory of another,” the statement declared, emphasizing that this stance is not a temporary reaction but a historical pillar of Uruguayan foreign policy rooted in multilateralism, sovereignty, and peaceful dispute resolution.

The Uruguayan government stressed that the U.S. airstrikes—reportedly causing civilian casualties and damaging essential infrastructure—exacerbate Venezuela’s humanitarian crisis and risk triggering a broader regional destabilization. By invoking Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which obliges all states to “refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state,” Montevideo explicitly framed the intervention as illegal and illegitimate, regardless of any stated justifications related to “democracy” or “security.”

Uruguay Condemns US Military Intervention in Venezuela: A Doctrine of Peace

Uruguay’s condemnation draws on a long-standing diplomatic tradition that dates back to its advocacy for non-intervention during the Cold War and its consistent support for UN-led conflict resolution. The current statement underscores that the resort to force without Security Council authorization not only breaches international law but also undermines the very foundations of the rules-based order that Uruguay has helped uphold for decades.

“Any military action in our region fractures a political consensus built over generations to keep war away from Latin American soil,” the foreign ministry warned.

The communiqué explicitly rejects narratives that seek to legitimize foreign military action under the guise of humanitarianism or regime change. “Peace cannot be bombed into existence,” the statement implies, echoing Uruguay’s consistent stance that dialogue, mediation, and respect for self-determination are the only legitimate paths to resolving internal conflicts.

In a humanitarian gesture, Uruguay confirmed it is in constant communication with its consulate in Caracas, closely monitoring the situation of Uruguayan nationals residing in Venezuela. Authorities are evaluating potential consular assistance measures should citizens be affected by infrastructure damage, service disruptions, or displacement resulting from the attacks.

This dual approach—diplomatic condemnation paired with citizen protection—reflects Uruguay’s balanced foreign policy: principled on global norms, yet practical in safeguarding its diaspora.

Review the Treaty of Tlatelolco on the denuclearization of Latin America

Geopolitical Context: Defending Regional Sovereignty in a Multipolar World

The Uruguay condemns US military intervention in Venezuela statement arrives at a critical juncture for Latin America. As the U.S. intensifies its military presence in the Caribbean—through naval patrols, drone operations, and strategic partnerships—Uruguay’s position challenges the resurgence of interventionist doctrines that treat the region as a sphere of influence.

Regionally, Montevideo joins a growing chorus of nations—including Mexico, Argentina, Bolivia, and members of ALBA-TCP—that reject unilateralism and uphold CELAC’s 2014 “Zone of Peace” declaration. This collective stance is not anti-American, but pro-sovereignty: it asserts that Latin American nations have the right to determine their own political and economic futures without external coercion.

Globally, Uruguay’s stance aligns with the Global South’s demand for a more equitable international order. At a time when powerful states bypass the UN Security Council to pursue strategic objectives—often under humanitarian pretexts—Uruguay’s invocation of the Charter serves as a moral and legal anchor for smaller nations seeking protection from regime-change campaigns.

Explore UN Office of Legal Affairs on the prohibition of the use of force

Critically, Uruguay’s statement also highlights a historical pattern: military interventions justified as “rescues” often lead to prolonged chaos, refugee crises, and state collapse—as seen in Iraq, Libya, and Syria. By opposing the U.S. strikes on Venezuela, Uruguay is not defending any specific government, but defending the principle that no nation should be bombed into submission, regardless of its internal challenges.

As the communiqué concludes: “The path forward must be political, not military. The future of Venezuela must be decided by Venezuelans—not by foreign bombs.”

In reaffirming its commitment to diplomacy, multilateralism, and regional peace, Uruguay once again positions itself not as a passive observer, but as a moral voice for the rules that bind the international community—rules that, when ignored by the powerful, leave the vulnerable exposed.

President Petro deploys forces at the border in anticipation of a possible influx of refugees.

On Saturday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced a reinforcement of security on the border with Venezuela to address a potential massive arrival of refugees from that country following the kidnapping of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores, which took place amid U.S. airstrikes on Caracas and other cities.

“Public forces are being deployed on the border, as is all the aid capacity we have available in case of a mass entry of refugees,” Petro stated in a message on his X account, adding that he had been monitoring events in Venezuela.

The two countries share a 2,219-kilometer (1,379-mile) land border stretching from the Caribbean to the Amazon. The main border crossings are between the Colombian city of Cucuta and San Antonio del Tachira and Ureña in Venezuela’s Tachira state. At the opening of the Cucuta border crossings today, the situation was one of total normality.

So far, Petro has not commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that Maduro and his wife were “captured,” but he has condemned the airstrikes against Venezuelan localities.

Petro reiterated that Colombia, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), will seek to have that body make a statement on the Venezuela situation.

“I invite the Venezuelan people to find the paths of civil dialogue and their unity. Without sovereignty, there is no nation. Peace is the path, and dialogue among peoples is fundamental for national union. Dialogue and more dialogue is our proposal,” he added.

Earlier, Colombian Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez announced a plan to prevent potential attacks by the National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrilla group in the border area with Venezuela, taking advantage of the U.S. attacks.

“All public forces capabilities were alerted and activated to anticipate and neutralize any attempt at a terrorist attack by the ELN cartel or other organized illegal armed groups that operate on the border,” he Sanchez said.

Previously, the ELN criticized the “interventionist actions” of the United States in Venezuela, following Washington’s military deployment in the southern Caribbean Sea and the Pacific under the pretext of combating drug trafficking.

Mexico condemns US military intervention in Venezuela, citing violations of the UN Charter and defending Latin America’s status as a Zone of Peace.

Mexico condemns US military intervention in Venezuela, calling it a violation of the UN Charter and a threat to Latin America’s status as a Zone of Peace.

Related: Russia Condemns U.S. Strikes on Venezuela as ‘Armed Aggression’

In a forceful diplomatic rebuke, the Mexican government has condemned the United States’ recent military intervention in Venezuela, denouncing it as a flagrant violation of international law and a direct threat to regional stability. On Saturday, December 28, 2025, Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an official statement declaring that armed actions by U.S. forces against Venezuelan territory constitute a clear breach of Article 2 of the United Nations Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.

“Mexico categorically rejects any military intervention and calls for the immediate cessation of all acts of aggression against the government and people of Venezuela,” the statement read, reflecting Mexico’s long-standing commitment to non-intervention, peaceful conflict resolution, and respect for sovereignty.

The condemnation comes amid reports of U.S. airstrikes targeting locations in Venezuela’s capital Caracas and the states of Aragua, Miranda, and La Guaira, resulting in civilian casualties. Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodríguez confirmed the attacks and demanded “immediate proof of life” for President Nicolás Maduro and First Combatant Cilia Flores, whose whereabouts remain unknown following the strikes.

Mexico Condemns US Military Intervention in Venezuela: Defending Latin America’s Zone of Peace

Mexico’s stance is rooted in a historical and legal tradition that rejects foreign military interference in the Americas. The statement explicitly reaffirmed that Latin America and the Caribbean is a Zone of Peace—a principle enshrined in the 2014 Havana Declaration adopted by all 33 member states of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC). This framework, championed by Mexico and other regional powers, bans the use or threat of force and mandates that disputes be resolved through dialogue.

“Any military action in our region places regional stability at grave risk,” the Mexican foreign ministry warned. “The only legitimate and effective path to resolve differences is through dialogue and negotiation.”

In line with this principle, Mexico announced it is prepared to support mediation, facilitation, or diplomatic accompaniment efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent wider conflict. It also urged the United Nations to intervene immediately to foster dialogue and ensure compliance with international law.

Read the CELAC Havana Declaration on Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace

Mexico’s embassy in Venezuela remains in constant communication with Mexican nationals residing in the country, offering emergency consular assistance and urging citizens to stay informed through official channels. Authorities have activated emergency hotlines and are monitoring the situation hour by hour.

This position aligns Mexico with a growing chorus of global voices denouncing the U.S. operation. Russia issued a statement of “deep concern and condemnation,” while the Network of Intellectuals, Artists, and Social Movements in Defense of Humanity (REDH) labeled the attack a “crime against peace” and a direct assault on the sovereignty of all nations. In the U.S., the ANSWER Coalition accused Washington of using “drug trafficking” and “democracy” as pretexts to “steal Venezuela’s oil and dominate Latin America.”

Review UN Office for Disarmament Affairs on the prohibition of the use of force

Critically, Mexico’s condemnation is not merely rhetorical—it is a strategic reaffirmation of its foreign policy doctrine. Since the Estrada Doctrine of the 1930s, Mexico has refused to recognize or reject foreign governments on ideological grounds, instead advocating for mutual respect and non-intervention. Under President Claudia Sheinbaum, this principle has been revitalized as a cornerstone of Mexico’s role in the Global South.

— Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo (@Claudiashein) January 3, 2026

Geopolitical Context: A Sovereign Latin America Resists Imperial Overreach

The Mexico condemns US military intervention in Venezuela statement carries profound regional and global implications. At a time when the U.S. is expanding its military footprint in the Caribbean—through naval deployments, drone operations, and base agreements—Mexico’s stance challenges the revival of the Monroe Doctrine and asserts Latin America’s right to self-determination.

Regionally, the attack on Venezuela threatens to destabilize an already fragile region. With migration flows surging and economies still recovering from pandemic and inflation shocks, military escalation could trigger a humanitarian and refugee crisis that would overwhelm neighboring countries, including Mexico itself.

Globally, the incident underscores a deepening rift between the Global North and South. While Western powers often invoke “rules-based order,” they simultaneously violate the very rules they champion when it suits strategic interests—such as control over Venezuela’s 304 billion barrels of proven oil reserves, the largest in the world.

Explore the International Court of Justice advisory opinions on non-intervention

Mexico’s position resonates with nations from South Africa to Indonesia that view unilateral military action as a relic of colonialism. By invoking the UN Charter and CELAC’s Zone of Peace, Mexico is not just defending Venezuela—it is defending the multilateral system itself against selective enforcement.

As the UN Security Council prepares for emergency consultations, all eyes are on whether powerful states will be held to the same standards as the rest. For Mexico, the answer is clear: peace cannot be imposed by bombs—it must be built through justice, dialogue, and respect.

In the words of the foreign ministry: “The sovereignty of nations is not negotiable. The peace of our region is not expendable.”

“I energetically condemn the vile and cowardly attack by the imperial enemy carried out in the early morning hours against innocent civilian targets of our homeland,” he said, and demanded the release of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and first lady Cilia Flores, who were kidnapped by U.S. forces.

Saab attributed the aggression to the “imperial enemy,” stating that President Maduro’s warnings about a possible U.S. threat have become “facts of blood.” In this regard, he emphasized the premeditation and treachery of the nighttime attack, designed to “defile the people of Venezuela.”

Saab also demanded proof that President Maduro and his wife are alive. He directly held the U.S. government responsible for any circumstance that may befall the Bolivarian Revolution leader.

“This morning, the United States has committed an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This causes profound concern and condemnation.

The pretexts cited to justify such actions are unfounded. Ideological animosity has overridden business pragmatism and the willingness to build predictable, trusting relations.

In the developing situation, it is important, above all, to avoid further escalation and to prepare to find a solution through dialogue. We proceed from the position that all parties with grievances against each other must seek ways to resolve problems through solutions crafted by dialogue. We are prepared to support them in this.

Latin America must remain a zone of peace, as it proclaimed itself in 2014. And Venezuela must be guaranteed the right to determine its own destiny without any destructive interference, let alone military interference from abroad.

We reaffirm our solidarity with the Venezuelan people and our support for the course of its Bolivarian leadership, aimed at protecting the country’s national interests and sovereignty.

We support the statement by Venezuelan authorities and leaders of Latin American countries on the urgent convening of a U.N. Security Council meeting.

Cabello Accuses Washington of Cowardly Bombing Civilians and Urges International Community to Break Silence.

On Saturday, Venezuela’s Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello condemned a “treacherous terrorist attack” by the United States involving bombs and missiles against civilians and infrastructure in Caracas, calling for calm and unity among the people.

Venezuela Activates All Its Comprehensive Defense Plans: VP Rodriguez

The minister stated that the aggression, which followed 28 weeks of threats from the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, sought to generate desperation in the population, although its effects were only partial.

“The country is in complete calm. What they attempted with the bombs and missiles they launched, they achieved partially. And I say partially because they expected the people to perhaps react wildly, cowardly. No. The cowards remain in the past. The people know what to do,” emphasized Cabello.

The Interior minister emphasized that the country was the target of a “terrorist attack” directed against its people, the homeland, electrical installations and the Bolivarian Revolution.

He highlighted that the assault also affected those with no relation to the revolutionary process, constituting an indiscriminate attack against all of Venezuela. Bombs were reported falling on buildings and areas inhabited by civilians.

Cabello noted that military and police forces, in coordination with organized communities, are deployed nationwide to guarantee peace and tranquility. He stated that a group of military and police personnel conducted intensive patrols in Caracas overnight.

From the streets of Caracas, Cabello made a firm call for calm and for trust in the leadership of the Political-Military High Command. He urged citizens not to fall into despair or facilitate actions for the “invading and terrorist enemy” that attacked cowardly.

He underlined that this is not the first battle faced by the Venezuelan people, who have known how to survive adverse circumstances, always with the conviction they will emerge victorious.

Furthermore, the Bolivarian minister called on the international community to speak out about this attack. Cabello warned that global organizations and bodies that remain silent in the face of this “massacre” of civilians and the bombing of inhabited areas will become accomplices. “It is a call only for reflection,” he affirmed, alluding to the need for a global ethical stance.

Cabello stated the country remains in “complete calm,” contradicting the expectations of the attackers, who hoped for an uncontrolled reaction. The Venezuelan people, far from falling for the provocation, demonstrate their maturity and organization. Cabello thanked the dedication of the men and women who worked tirelessly to secure the city.

Additionally, the senior official denounced that the “treacherous and vile” attack was perpetrated against a sleeping people, which highlights the cowardice of the aggression. The minister urged the country’s political organizations to issue unified statements and maintain constant “alertness.”

“Let us not fall into their provocation. Let us not fall into hopelessness. Let us have all our faith placed, and at the end of this battle the Venezuelan people will emerge victorious. And at the end of these attacks, we will overcome,” concluded Cabello.

On Saturday, Venezuela’s government called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) after the United States bombed Caracas and other cities in the country.

In a letter addressed to the UNSC president, Somalia’s Ambassador Abukar Dahir Osman, Caracas requested the emergency session to discuss the U.S. acts of aggression against Venezuela. The letter was also delivered to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Venezuela further asked the council to condemn the U.S. aggression against the Venezuelan people and government, demand a “cessation of the armed attacks,” and establish appropriate measures to hold the U.S. administration “accountable for the crimes of aggression” committed on Venezuelan territory.

Venezuela’s request came after “U.S. military forces executed a series of armed attacks” in the early hours of Saturday, which the government of President Nicolas Maduro described as “brutal, unjustified and unilateral.”

The FANB is mobilizing its operational capabilities—including land, air, naval, riverine, and missile units—in a “perfect popular-military-police fusion” to form a unified combat force.

She confirms that the entire nation is following the instructions previously given by President Maduro.

In the early hours of Saturday, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed that the United States had kidnapped President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

“Faced with this brutal situation and this brutal attack, we do not know the whereabouts of President Nicolas Maduro and the First Lady, Cilia Flores,” Rodriguez stated and confirmed the killing of soldiers and civilians during the U.S. military operation, which carried out bombings against Caracas and three other states in the country.

For this reason, Rodriguez demanded the U.S. government provide “immediate proof of life” of Maduro and Flores. She reiterated a warning previously made by the Venezuelan leader regarding how the country should respond to a U.S. aggression, motivated “by the desperation of U.S. energy greed.”

“The first thing President Maduro told the people of Venezuela was ‘people to the streets,’ activated as militia, activating all the Nation’s comprehensive defense plans,” the vice president asserted.

Rodriguez emphasized that the illegal detention of the Venezuelan president, as well as the airstrikes against the population, constitute a flagrant violation of international law.

“We condemn this brutal, savage form of aggression against our people, which has claimed the lives of military officials, who become martyrs of our homeland, (…) and of innocent Venezuelan civilians,” she added.

Rodriguez’s statements came after U.S. President Donald Trump offered initial remarks following his order of a military attack on Venezuelan soil:

“The United States has successfully carried out a large-scale attack against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who, along with his wife, has been captured and removed from the country,” the U.S. leader wrote on Truth Social.

“Further details will be released shortly. Today, at 11:00 a.m., a press conference will be held at Mar-a-Lago,” Trump announced.

In light of the situation, the Venezuelan vice president called for a “perfect fusion” of police and military to rise “in defense of the homeland.”

“No one will undermine the historic legacy of our Liberator father, Simon Bolivar. The people of Venezuela, in perfect national unity, must mobilize to defend their natural resources and what is most sacred: their right to independence and to the future,” she concluded.

The Bolivarian Government Calls for National Mobilization.

In the early hours of Saturday, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez issued a statement following the start of the U.S. aggression against Venezuela.

RELATED:

Venezuela Accuses U.S. of Military Aggression, Declares Emergency

The Bolivarian official confirmed that the United States had kidnapped President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Celia Flores. Rodriguez demanded that the U.S. government provide proof of life for President Maduro and his wife.

The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry also issued the following statement:

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela rejects, repudiates and denounces to the international community the grave military aggression perpetrated by the current government of the United States of America against Venezuelan territory and population in the civilian and military localities of the city of Caracas, the capital of the Republic, and the states of Miranda, Aragua and La Guaira. This act constitutes a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter, especially Articles 1 and 2, which enshrine respect for sovereignty, the legal equality of states and the prohibition of the use of force. Such aggression threatens international peace and stability, specifically in Latin America and the Caribbean, and gravely endangers the lives of millions of people.

The objective of this attack is nothing less than to seize Venezuela’s strategic resources, in particular its oil and minerals, attempting to forcibly break the nation’s political independence. They will not succeed. After more than two hundred years of independence, the people and their legitimate government remain steadfast in defense of sovereignty and the inalienable right to decide their own destiny. The attempt to impose a colonial war to destroy the republican form of government and force a “regime change,” in alliance with the fascist oligarchy, will fail like all previous attempts.

Since 1811, Venezuela has faced and defeated empires. When in 1902 foreign powers bombarded our coasts, President Cipriano Castro proclaimed: “The insolent foot of the foreigner has profaned the sacred soil of the Homeland.” Today, with the spirit of Bolivar, Miranda and our liberators, the Venezuelan people rise again to defend their independence from imperial aggression.

People to the Streets

The Bolivarian Government calls on all social and political forces in the country to activate mobilization plans and repudiate this imperialist attack. The people of Venezuela and its Bolivarian National Armed Forces, in perfect popular-military-police fusion, are deployed to guarantee sovereignty and peace. Simultaneously, Bolivarian Peace Diplomacy will raise the corresponding denunciations before the U.N. Security Council, the Secretary-General of that organization, CELAC and the Non-Aligned Movement, demanding condemnation and accountability from the U.S. government.

President Nicolas Maduro has ordered all national defense plans to be implemented at the appropriate time and under appropriate circumstances, in strict adherence to the provisions of the Constitution of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Organic Law on States of Exception and the Organic Law on National Security.

In this sense, President Nicolas Maduro has signed and ordered the implementation of the Decree declaring a state of External Commotion throughout the national territory, to protect the rights of the population, the full functioning of republican institutions and to immediately transition to armed struggle. The entire country must activate to defeat this imperialist aggression.

He has likewise ordered the immediate deployment of the Command for the Integral Defense of the Nation and the Organs of Direction for Integral Defense in all states and municipalities of the country.

In strict adherence to Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, Venezuela reserves the right to exercise legitimate defense to protect its people, its territory and its independence. We call on the peoples and governments of Latin America, the Caribbean and the world to mobilize in active solidarity against this imperial aggression. As Supreme Commander Hugo Chavez Frias stated, “In the face of any circumstance of new difficulties, however large they may be, the response of all patriots… is unity, struggle, battle and victory.”

The most recent killing involved journalist Mitzar Castillejos, who died on December 26 in Lima after being shot two weeks earlier by unidentified assailants. He was attacked while traveling to host a radio program in Aguaytía, in the Amazon region of Ucayali.

Castillejos was the fourth journalist killed in Peru in 2025. The other victims were Gastón Medina, murdered in the southern city of Ica; Raúl Celis, killed in the Amazon city of Iquitos; and Fernando Núñez, slain in the northern coastal town of Pacasmayo.

“Four journalists murdered. 458 attacks on the press. They try everything and by all means. The goal is one: to silence us. To silence critical voices. To gag those who investigate. Either through laws or through bullets,” said ANP president Zuliana Lainez in the report.

Lainez stated that “these crimes, in 2025, place Peru second only to Mexico in terms of lethal violence against journalists,” adding that “our country today entails greater risk than Ecuador, Colombia, Haiti or Central American countries, with all that this implies.”

The report, prepared by the ANP’s Office for Journalists’ Human Rights, notes a sustained escalation of attacks on press freedom throughout 2025. ANP legal adviser Miguel Jugo said that in 2025 “aggressions against press freedom have continued to intensify, particularly against journalists who carry out oversight and report on the various negative situations occurring in the country.”

Jugo added that “various institutions monitoring the situation of social communicators indicate that the institutions responsible for the most aggressions are the Executive branch, in first place, followed by Congress.”

According to the data, the 458 incidents included 127 cases of threats or harassment, 114 physical and verbal assaults, 79 instances of stigmatizing discourse, 50 obstructions to journalistic coverage and 46 cases of judicial intimidation. The report also documented 13 legislative threats, 12 restrictions on access to information, four murders, four labor-related violations such as workplace harassment or dismissal, four cases of administrative pressure or sanctions, three detentions and two cyberattacks.

— ANP Perú (@ANP_periodistas) January 2, 2026

The ANP identified 217 public officials as aggressors, followed by 121 security agents—including police, military personnel, municipal guards and private security—71 civilians, 45 unidentified individuals and four employers. By media sector, 219 cases affected digital outlets, 108 television, 66 print and 65 radio. Those targeted included 231 men, 93 women and 134 media organizations.

Geographically, attacks were reported in 65 provinces nationwide. Lima accounted for 256 cases, followed by Huamanga, Huaraz and Puno with 12 cases each, and Maynas with 10.

The findings align with warnings issued in October by the Inter American Press Association (IAPA), which described 2025 as one of the worst years in recent decades for press freedom in Peru. At the time, the IAPA cited not only direct attacks but also judicial persecution of critical journalists, disinformation campaigns, stigmatization of dissenting voices, restrictions on access to public information and legislative proposals that directly threaten informational freedoms.

Ethiopian Minister of Innovation and Technology, Belete Molla, stated that digital sovereignty is at the heart of the national transformation agenda with this strategy, launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, which will establish a sovereign cloud and ensure the strict enforcement of data laws.

Molla emphasized that these measures guarantee that citizens’ information remains managed and protected.

He also noted that Ethiopia Digital 2030 aims to shift the country from dependence on external platforms to full control over its

“This marks the beginning of a five-year journey to consolidate Ethiopia’s status as a leading African technology hub, moving from being a consumer of foreign platforms to becoming the master of our own digital destiny,” he stated.

He emphasized that building a scalable public digital infrastructure is essential to reducing this dependence.

In this regard, he continued, the cornerstone of this effort is the success of the Digital Strategy 2025, including the benefit of the Five Million Ethiopian Coders initiative.
