I've heard there's an official kbin app in very early stages. I don't know who's working on that, but it's not in the 2023 roadmap that Ernest has shared in the sidebar - and it rightfully doesn't need to be a main focus at this early stage. I know most people reading this have probably just gotten here as well, but I wouldn't be surprised if a developer out there has already started. The PWA (web app) experience isn't bad on mobile. It's no native app though. Lemmy has that going for it, and I'd love for that experience here on kbin.

There have been a lot of threads these last few days discussing the current feature-set of /kbin. While it's good to go out there and get a sense of what's the prevailing opinions are, it's probably actually better for the project as a whole that actual feature requests be lodged at the issue tracker.

https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues

Open source projects, and their code repositories, are often treated as the exclusive domain of coders, but the rest of us can actually help guide project engineers by contributing ideas. And like all contributions, they really belong in the project's repository, where they can be viewed in a single location not only by the project's maintainer, but by other code contributors who may see ideas listed and want to take on the task of implementing them.

So, rather than having the same feature down in the 87th comment of a dozen different threads, where code contributors are not likely to see them, let's get them up there front and centre!

Seems like the federation was turned on not long ago. It's very exciting to be part of kbin's growth!

Hello all! I'm one of the original reddit users, and before that a long time Digg user. I want to enjoy and participate in the fediverse.

Can someone please explain federation, and to what degree the content from other platforms / instances will appear for a user who only visits kbin.social? I understand that federation is currently broken. What happens when it gets fixed?

I tried searching, but no luck. If there's a fan or link, all the better :D

Turns out the /r/technology fans were lurkers after all. So far /m/technology has 1 comment vs 170 for /m/tech.

I moved to /r/tech on reddit when it became apparent that /r/technology were shills, or astrofurfers, or both.... something was weird on /r/technology.

The biggest problem with kbin is honestly quite simple, but I don't people is talking about is the fact that finding the magazines that I'm subscribed to is in Settings > Subscribed, on Reddit, it's literally in the top bar, I don't get why it's buried in settings. Another thing is why is my home page full of posts from magazines that I'm not subscribed to and mostly not intrested in? I know I can do /sub to access the magazines feed, but why is hidden and why isn't it just the default?

I'm surprised to see a magazine can inject custom JavaScript at all - it seems neat, but also if left unmanaged it could be a disaster waiting to happen (session hijacking, putting ads into feeds, crypto mining, etc.).

I just tried adding alert('Hello world!'); to the JavaScript section of my test magazine and nothing happened, though - which leads me to believe there may be some allowlist of what JavaScript is and isn't okay.

Is that documented anywhere?

On every thread or post, if you click on more and activity, you'll get the info.

I personally find this to be a good things, I've seen people using downvote way too easily. I like the idea that we need to be somehow accountable for those mechanism.

edit: It could be somehow improved to have an option to let this info only available between concerned users.

edit edit: I think that up/downvote info shouldn't be public, but kept private between the users involved. we need to address this privacy issue.

Dear not-so-techy KBeans ;)

While @ernest and the other instance admins are working on infrastructure, let's work together to improve the getting-started experience of users new to Kbin.

Share any graphics, FAQs, guides, or other valuable resources you've discovered (don't forget to give credit!) or created by posting them in this thread. Remember, not everyone's perfect, so if something in a resource isn't exactly correct, just point that out in your comment! A little clarification goes a long way.

These can later be congregated into a dedicated magazine for new users to reference (was thinking /m/GettingStarted? Lmk).

I'll start it off:

EDIT: @gettingstarted (mobile link) is up! Continue to use this thread for questions and content. Our goal is creating structured guides for users to follow over at @gettingstarted, but we need content to do that.

E: First, very sloppy intro guide is up here.

Don't really know what the right way to call it is, but someone/some bot is spamming this post everywhere, even in the comments sections:
ttps://youtube.com/watch?v=IE96LokdvH8 We weren’t in the MLS at 35

EDIT: it even spammed in this comment section

For me flair is probably the most important. I follow a lot of organized sports and being able to quickly identify which team someone supports helps the conversation move along without having to write "as a fan of..." in every single comment. And this isn't a like talking shit, sports guy thing. It's genuinely extremely useful for broadening the depth of the conversation.

Also not having to scroll to find the reply box. Super annoying. Super easy fix.

That being said I'm all in on kbin. Deleted Reddit. Not going back.

I have tried this code:
body { background-image: url('https://imgur.com/9Ns6RVS.png'); background-repeat: no-repeat; background-size: cover; }

Didn't work. Please help, thanks!

been using it in and out and now it's... much faster? on both mobile and desktop :O am i just crazy or did @ernest bless us with a miracle <3

are you guys feeling this too?

Although I would like to NSFW content in my timeline, I think its better to have them blurred by default and only visible if I click on it. And any such post from NSFW subreddits should also be blurred by default. Saying this because I noticed a post from a NSFW subreddit in the front-page and it was displayed without any blurring. I can anticipate this leading to potentially awkward situation otherwise, especially when browsing the site during a slow day at work.

Currently, each thread has the "Activity" link that shows publicly everyone that upvoted/favorite a thread. This is counter norm to many coming from Reddit and newer folks that expected otherwise. I think hiding the list should be high priority in next feature update(removal?) to encourage frictionless upvoting behavior.

Case in point, NSFW threads are starting on kbin now, cross that with micro blogging that may involve people using real names, this creates unexpected personal preference being exposed.

As a option, Boost feature may still left to public view.

Anonymity is important. Let me know if I misunderstood how this works.

Hi there, still adapting to all this, hoping I can get some clarification.

It seems like the 'front page' of kbin is content sourced from all communities (analogous to alien site's '/all'). Is there a view that shows me threads/microblogs only from all the communities that I have actively subscribed to instead of every one known? (perhaps more analogous to alien site's per-user front page)

Thank you!

Hello! Prior Reddit user here attempting to gain a better understanding of kbin and the Fediverse. Any feedback from more experienced users would be greatly appreciated regarding the following questions:

(1) Can someone explain exactly what an instance is?

(2) Is kbin.social a single "instance" hosted on a single server?

(3) How does one go about hosting or creating a new instance of kbin?

(4) What's the difference between Mastodon, Lemmy and kbin.social?

(5) If I've created an account on kbin.social, and kbin.social goes down or gets deleted, is my account also deleted from the Fediverse?

(6) Can user accounts be "ported" or "transferred" across instances?

(7) Does the content or Magazines created on one instance disappear if that instance goes down or gets deleted?

(8) If the answer to #7, above, is, "Yes", is there not a function or ability for other instances or sites within the Fediverse to constantly mirror or backup other instances?

(9) Do the threads I see posted on a Magazine hosted on kbin.social also appear in the same Magazine on Mastodon or other kbin instances?

Thanks in advance for any responses and answers!

I'm quite new to the fediverse, and noticed that on kbin you can actually see who downvoted a post or a a comment (and not only your own posts and comments), by clicking on the "activity" button.

My question is, how does this translate to Mastadon? I haven't seen a "reduce" button and was wondering if it is the same as "block" or "mute" on Mastodon?

I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest. Make sure to explain this to them so they don't think it's just spamming ads. Even just asking them to route users to r/kbinMigration would be enough

Hey.

Did anyone have any luck yet with setting up /kbin in docker compose behind a traefik proxy?
For Lemmy it was pretty simple, all things considered.
However I struggle to even understand /kbins admin guide in that regard. Fixed some folder permission issues, not sure how to actually build the web ui and I guess it is simply not set up yet to run behind a reverse proxy.

I think I give up for now 😅

Hey Reddit refugees! You may have noticed that kbin.social is taking forever to load because of all of the traffic it's getting.

Luckily, there are a few other kbin instances that you can use right now! kilioa.org and fedia.io have recently popped up over the last few days, and they're still running smoothly during the Reddit blackout. They're also still federating with Lemmy, so you can see posts from beehaw.org and lemmy.ml (federation is currently disabled on kbin.social due to the cloudflare protection).

I was trying to work out how much to donate to Kbin to keep the lights on. I read somewhere it costs something like $1/month per user?

Can we assume that 1/5 of users will be donating on a monthly basis?

So most people will be donating something like $5/month to cover the freeloaders and those that genuinely can't afford it?

Does that seem about right?

I was surprised to see that only 190 out of ~5k users have so far donated:
https://www.buymeacoffee.com/kbin

That maths doesn't work does it?

I hope there's a recurring payment option soon like Open Collective otherwise I'll probably forget to donate next month.

Is there a way to view the LIST of magazines i’m subscribed to on kbin?

I see that you can change your feed to only what you’re subscribed to, but I’m pretty used to checking specific subreddits on reddit on the favorites page for Apollo — can’t seem to find a way to do the same with kbin

i see random magazines and posts on the sidebar, seems like favorite list or subscribe list would be good to be around that area but higher

Hi, I'm a developer and I want to experiment with the kbin API. I've found this https://docs.kbin.pub/, but it doesn't seem to work with kbin.social.

Do I need an API key somehow, and if so, where can I request one? I'm also expecting to have some issues with the cloudflare integration, as it also asks to "prove" I'm human when requesting /api endpoints.
