Hello, quick question about the interconnection between instances in the fediverse. I now have my account here on kbin.social and I have also created an account on mastodon.social some while ago that I've reactivated now since the reddit blackout. I have read that kbin can access mastodon, so do I need a Mastodon account at all? Can I possibly log in to Mastodon through my kbin.social account and use the Mastodon interface when I feel like it?

Also another thing: would this question better fit into the threads section or is it fine here with the microblog?

And then have no activity in them. Not quite sure why this is happening, is it power hungry idiots thinking if I make fifty magazines, maybe one will be popular?

Do people assume if they create a magazine, it becomes active as if by magic?

Or are people thinking this is similar to a new game of Pokémon, and they have to make all the magazines?

I find it baffling that those who have created many magazines are not active.

I know that Ernest is very busy right now, and this is not a priority, but I have a request/comment about how images are shown.

Currently when you're browsing a magazine and you click on an image this opens the article, then you need to click the image again to open the image (this is on mobile, don't know if desktop is different).

On Lemmy clicking an image expands it inline without opening the article. I much prefer this as I can look at the image and then decide if I want to click into the article.

As an aside, it would be nice if clicking anywhere on the article comment could open the article, not just the title.

Thanks Ernest for your hard work!

I always thought it was a pretty smart idea on Reddit's side to have the posts and comments be automatically upvoted by their author, saving them the tough choice between playing fair or boosting their initial reach a little; and if you had particularly low self-esteem, this enabled you to reduce your own points by not one, but two, by self-downvoting.
Here, both upvotes and downvotes (or rather, favourites and reduces) start at 0, and you have the option to upvote your post manually (which I've already seen some people do) - which, while currently does not increase your reputation, does give you that small initial boost by making it look like people are starting to engage with your post.

What do you think - should the posts and comments be automatically upvoted by the author? If not, are you fine with people upvoting themselves, or do you feel it's unfair towards the ones that don't do it?

like on reddit, comments on posts from the OP have a [S]. Would be cool if we could get an indicator of who the OP is without having to check usernames etc.

On desktop, click "Settings > show top bar (on)" to get a navbar at the top of the page that lets you easily sort between the default home feed, magazines you are subscribed to, and a list of random magazines to check out :)

I keep saying posts marked as "OC" but I have no idea what that means. Does anyone know?

First of all I would like to suggest to @ernest to take a day or two break from working on kbin and in general to not overwork himself.
Secondly, some sort of Patreon should be setup to streamline the donation process. I, probably like many others would like to just set up a recurring donation and forget about it.
Thirdly, I think it would be great we also have something like https://beehaw.org/post/428209 to keep this as transparent as possible.

Good morning! :) Today I want to focus mainly on reviewing the pull requests you've submitted. There are many great things there that will help improve the kbin experience. That's amazing, thank you! I'm also in the final stages of sorting out the infrastructure-related formalities. Soon, the situation with the website's functionality should stabilize, and the traffic from the fediverse will gradually be restored. I've decided to delegate some tasks as I can no longer oversee everything at this stage. There are many offers of help for which I'm very grateful, and I haven't had a chance to respond to some of them yet because I only just saw them - a lot is happening, really.

As I mentioned before, new possibilities have emerged that I couldn't have imagined before. All of this is thanks to your support; you are incredible, and I thank you. That's why it's crucial for me to ensure transparency in everything we do and provide regular reports. I want to share as much information behind the scenes as possible. That's why it may seem like it's taking a long time, but I truly want to make the most of every cent.

Now, onto the bad news. I messed up.

The workload overwhelmed me, and I couldn't read all your messages. I will diligently work my way through them, but I need time.

The registration system is far from perfect, so from time to time, I manually verify and activate accounts whose activation links didn't arrive. Please check again later if you find yourself in such a situation.

The queue for account deletions is stuck. Manual fix is needed, which will be difficult until the infrastructure is moved. I have recorded all 230 account deleiton requests, and each one will definitely be deleted, but I also need time for that. I apologize for this. If someone wants their account to be immediately deleted, please send an email through the contact form starting with "DELETE MY ACCOUNT" - it will be easier for me to filter it out, and I will delete the account manually.

That's all from me. I'm going back to stirring the cauldron. Thank you for all the messages and kind words. Thank you for being here. Have a nice day!

I created an account on both Lemmy.World and here, and I have to say, I kind of wish that all the servers experienced something similar. Why?

Comparing the Magazine/Communities list between each instance I feel that on Lemmy things are so spread out unevenly because everyone flocked to the community with the most members, but still joined/created local communities but left them empty. These means that at this point it is still hard to figure out where to join and where to call home, community-wise.

To me, Kbin's lock down basically forced us to create local magazines and start building them. That means, that regardless of what happens after the lock down is over we will have well established magazines here that we can call home while also joining the conversation on other servers across the fediverse. For people that are still trickling in, it makes it easier for them to find the subreddits they left behind on their home instance.

This lets Kbin.social be somewhat self-sufficient for those that aren't into the Lemmy side of the fediverse, as I know some people have complained about Lemmy.ml and Lemmygrad.

It's going to be exciting around here once we are finally able to explore. This just feels like the starter zone where all the newbies can gather, safe from the outside world.

So I've created a magazine. How do I decide whether to add an "article" vs a "post"

I just joined and would like to say hello!

Opinion: kbin.social having the same name as kbin software led to confusing magazine names.

For example, kbinMeta's description says

Magazine dedicated to discussions about the kbin itself. Provide feedback, ask questions, suggest improvements, and engage in conversations related to the platform organization, policies, features, and community dynamics.

So if I understand correctly, it is about kbin.social-the-site.

However, kbinDesign's description appears to be about kbin-the-software.

This led to my confusion whether this is the correct place to write my "say hello" post.

What do you think?

Why am I negative in my reputation? I have not made any posts of comments that are negative (accept for maybe a small one or two but it would have been like 4 to 6 or something). Why am I -46 when I have a highly upvoted thread?

1166

The current default "Homepage" value is "All". That makes sense for users with zero subscribed magazines, so they see something.

But for users with one or more subscribed magazines, the default value for "Homepage" needs to be "Subscriptions".

That's partially just because subscriptions mean little if the default frontpage ignores them. But there's a more important reason than that.

The current situation is that posts in m/Conservative are heavily downvoted, and barely upvoted. (Whatever your politics may be, consider if this was happening to you.) As more ex-redditors join, this problem is likely to worsen.

Eventually moderators need better controls, to say things like "Only members can vote", etc.

But for now, a very easy fix is to change the default value of "Homepage" to be "Subscriptions". Of course, "All" should still be a selectable option for those who prefer it.

Is there a way to block people or specific magazines so we don't have to see their comments or posts? One thing I really enjoyed about the app I'm leaving is that I can just block users who were annoying or I didn't want to see content wise. Is there a way to do that on kbin?

Is there any way to collapse comments and their children in the interface? Seems like a fairly basic feature but I can't find it.

Let me tell you folks, we've got a tremendous problem here, tremendous. The immigration, the influx of Redditors to this fantastic site, it's a disaster. We've got to do something about it, and I've got the best idea, believe me. We're going to build a tremendous firewall, a great big one. And I mean big, folks, the biggest you've ever seen. This great site deserves it, it really does. We're going to mitigate, we're going to stop those Redditors from pouring in. We'll build this tremendous firewall along the Reddit-Kbin border, and we'll keep 'em out. Nobody builds walls better than me, nobody. It's going to be tremendous, just tremendous, believe me!

Hello everyone. I hope you're doing well today.

I'm writing this to you on a website, kbin.social, that's been painfully slow for the past a couple of days. I just want to put my thoughts out there, even though I'm doubtful that many of you will see it. And that's okay!

You see, I'm of the opinion that we don't need another reddit, a 1:1 replacement and I don't think there ever will be. We are too used to our websites being capable of serving to billions of people. And I think that era is long gone.

Our internet has been poisoned by the promise of reach and the dopamine hits of engagement. We are only human, we've gotten adapted to it. Everything had to be shared and heard immediately.

I think we should take a step back and appreciate how small this website is. It's not the prettiest or fastest with a massive reach. It's just a small corner of the web, but full of potential.

A potential to tame our need for a stream of information. It's stressful being in this constant urgency. It's not good for us. I honestly need we should slow the fuck down.

And, perhaps, embrace staying small.

Imagine a community that doesn't need to weed out rule-breaking posts, low-effort trolls, and illegal content in real-time. Even the thought of it is exhausting to me.

Instead, we can focus on building what we care about, slowly. People will come: Just start that 'zine, you can set the rules later, it doesn't have to be perfect immediately.

Thanks for reading.

Hello, I'm very new to this and I thought it would be clever to create magazines of what I liked on reddit before anybody else. But I'm in over my head, I've never moderated anything, I don't understand the microblog and hashtags (never had a twitter or mastondon account). So I would like to delete the magazines I've created (3) so more informed and more competent people can take over.

Plus there might already fine alternatives on lemmy that we just cannot see here at the moment because of the cloudfare shield.

Thank you for your help.

Since running a Kbin instance implies some costs, it might be good to implement some ways for admins to monetize their instance. Has this been considered?

Someone here already has 12 subs on his own. We would be inspired to avoid the era of the power mods. Moding should involve an interest, not just collecting rings of infinity like it's a gold rush. How can it be a good practice in the long term?

In Mastodon, we have the Covenant, which starts with:

"Active moderation against racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia
Users must have the confidence that they are joining a safe space, free from white supremacy, anti-semitism and transphobia of other platforms."

I have not seen proposals yet for a similar baseline of rules for Kbin servers, generally. Have I missed one?

Spammers are already here, and I assume nazis and CP types will become known soon unless there is a broad moderation/anti-harassment consensus explicitly stated. I do not know where the kbin.social server is physically located, and which laws govern the content herein.

I think the server owner gets final say in all matters, but that the community here needs to drive this effort so that ernest can focus on the overall development roadmap.

How might we, as a community, come up with a code of conduct that builds a foundation to stave off rot for as long as possible?

Apparently there's some sort of fix in the pipeline related to this, but at the very least, I'd like to be able to type kbin.social/m/kbinmeta and be redirected to kbin.social/m/kbinMeta
