As someone who never used Twitter, it seems like microblogs are like comments from a thread but the parent thread doesn't exist and each top level comment is its own topic? Perhaps a roundabout way of thinking, but am I on the right track here?

It took me a while to figure this out today and hopefully will help someone along the way.

I saw a post about Lemmy Explorer, a website that lets you find new to you magazines across the federated servers. Great! I thought just what I need to find topics that interest me. So I found some magazines I wanted to subscribe to on kbin and first clicked magazines to search for them but none showed up. "Huh" Next I tried the convenient copy function on Lemmy Explorer and pasted the copied text both under magazines in the search bar and into the search on the front page of kbin. Neither worked for me.

The fix is pretty simple. When you copy from Lemmy Explorer the text copies like this example "!linux@lemmy.ml" all you need to do is remove the "!" at the start making it "linux@lemmy.ml" or "technology@beehaw.org". Paste the text with the "!" removed into the search bar on the front page of kbin and you will see the magazine pop up. From there you can subscribe to that magazine.

This is without a doubt well known to legacy users of kbin but as a new user I was struggling to figure it out.

Is there a way to sift through magazines without having to aimlessly scroll through pages of lifelessness?

I'm seeing the federated content, but it's hard to tell where the content came from. Currently, the only reliable way to see the source is by reading the URL when you're viewing a thread. It doesn't work well on mobile though and it doesn't work for the feed.

How work everyone feel if the magazine included the source always? So instead of saying kbinMeta, you'd see kbinMeta@kbin.social? Or would you prefer another solution?

1132

Clicking a username like @ernest does not actually take you to the user's page because the @ character isn't removed from the name in the URL.

The Imagus Chrome and Firefox extension shows image previews on hover. Currently with kbin, hovering over the thumbnail in the frontpage or magazine view just shows the thumbnail but slightly larger, which isn't what we want (especially since the thumbnails have a distorted aspect ratio). Here's how to make the extension show the full image when hovering over the thumnail:

  1. In Chrome, open the extension options from the extension menu (puzzle piece icon in the toolbar). The Firefox version likely is somewhat similar.
  2. Go to the "Sieve" tab and click the "+" button to add a new rule.
  3. In the img field, use: ^kbin\.social/media/cache/resolve/entry_thumb/(.*)
  4. In the to field, use: media.kbin.social/$1
  5. Save and refresh any pages that you wanted to use this on.

What the rule should look like

For non-kbin.social instances, you most likely just have to update the domain in the regexes above (steps 3 and 4) to whatever your instance's domain is. I escaped the dot in kbin.social to be safe (if you don't escape it, it matches any character), but it's unlikely to matter.

kbin implemented infinite scrolling !!!

I feel like kbin has the most Reddit-like feel in terms of browsing, although Lemmy has the advantage in terms of robustness and stability. Who else is hanging out in both spaces?

Is it just me or has something about the search changed? I think you used to be able to click on the search icon, then select "magazines" to search for one

Now the only way I've found to do that is to scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "magazines" there

Seems a bit cumbersome to me and I think it's not that intuitive either

As I learn more about Lemmy and ActivityPub, I learn that the owners of each instance can dramatically shape our entire experience by blocking other instances. For example, beehaw.org blocks hundreds of other instances, while lemmy.world blocks only one. This is visible by scrolling to the bottom of the page on each instance and clicking "Instances". I'm sure some users would like a very safe, quiet space. I would like a space closer to 2010 Reddit, where very little discussion is off the table. Is there any way to see which instances kbin.social has blocked?

Seems like #kbin is federating again? That's really refreshing to see.

I just saw some posts from beehaw.org and lemmy.world, looks like we're back in business!

Recently migrated from reddit. Old.reddit on desktop has a decent information density. Reddit's compact view i.reddit (RIP) was even better. Desktop new reddit is an abomination. Compact view here shows me roughly 4.5 top-level article headlines on screen at one time (avatars, thumbnails, media previews, etc. all disabled obviously, font size on minimum). Old.reddit shows NINE. i.reddit was maybe 15. Obviously the exact numbers will depend on your system, but we're wasting at least 50% of vertical space compared to old.reddit and maybe 70% compared to i.reddit. Can we do better here?

I'm quite sure this has been asked before, but I couldn't find a relevant article. Is there a way to migrate an account from, for example, kbin.social to a different Kbin instance? I'm thinking of creating my own instance to help take the load off kbin.social, but I'd like to be able to transfer my account before I do that. Is this a current or planned feature?

There have been a few voices talking about adding ads to kbin. To those, I'd like to say they are probably not necessary. Mastodon is doing fine with donations (28k+/month and they do need more)

However, kbin has the advantage that it can add things like tips/badges or rewards, just like reddit. Gold stars, cake days, "highest contributor", "largest donor", "most active user", "most upvoted user", "guilded", "part of the donor club", participation trophies, and so on.

Instance owners could then connect a stripe account or some other donation service and allow people to credit an account in order to give away credits or tips or badges or something else.

How do Badges work? I setup some on /m/Utah and have tried adding them to threads, but there doesn't seem to be any sort of drop-down or autocomplete for them. And I don't see them show up anywhere on the thread pages.

What do Badges even do? I assumed they were like Flairs on Reddit, but now I have no idea.

Is it normal to feel nervous about starting a magazine? Like I want to be excited with other people about Queens of the Stoneage's new upcoming album, but I don't know if I'd be the right person to start the QOTSA magazine. Seems like a lot of responsibility?

I was wondering how porn would be dealt with here.

Apologies if this is the wrong place to post but I saw the askKbin thread about hate and trolls that put me in mind of this article. I think it is something we should bear in mind if we want to foster a community free of hate.

Is it normal for Kbin to frequently have to verify if my connection is secure via Cloudflare, if I neglect the tab for more than a couple of minutes?
