Can we talk about the "top bar" and why it doesn't show my subscribed magazines?

I like the quick links to the all or subscribed feed, but what is the purpose of showing a bunch of apparently random communities across the top instead of my subscriptions? Maybe that is the intent and that feature hasn't been coded yet?

I'm looking for an easy way to get to my list of subscribed magazines. Sometimes I prefer to go to a specific topic rather than reading everything mixed together, especially if there is a topical event or controversy going on that I want to follow for that particular topic. So far, I have not found any way to see my subscriptions in Kbin beyond going through the list of ALL magazines.

This list is biased around mastodon, but works for any federated instance. You have to remember that "Federated is federated" and KBIN connects not just to Lemmy but ALL the fediverse. It's important you go to admin settings and add abusive sites to the block list - for your sanity and the safety of your users

How can we filter out NSFW content the Random Posts sidebar? I don't want to see that in casual scrolling. It's something you should be able to opt out of, but am I just missing where the option is? I see in the settings pages where I can opt in/out of adult content, but that seems to only apply to the main feed. What about the Random Posts sidebar?

Couple questions that I couldn't find answers to on Google.

  1. Is the only way to see your list of subscribed magazines here? https://kbin.social/settings/subscriptions/magazines
  2. Is there any way to follow a kbin tag?

Hi!

Is there a way to filter for different languages?

This morning, I started seeing German posts, but I don't speak German. I tried blocking the magazine but there's actually a lot of different German Magazines lol, and I'd rather just filter out the language (until I decide to learn it!)

On the other hand, is there a way to add other languages? I don't care about specific magazines in English when I'm browsing /all here, and I'd be happy with the same for Spanish or French.

On my iPhone in mobile Safari, I keep getting signed out of kbin. This doesn't seem to be happening to me on desktop (Brave on Linux). Any ideas why?

I think you should see something.

Like I mentioned many time before, this isn't my first attempt at creating an aggregator. Years ago, I built something similar, and back then I drew a lot of inspiration from Postmill. This time, to avoid starting from scratch, I get some elements from my old snippets. Originally, kbin was meant to be a project just for me and a few friends, so I didn't attribute the origin authors. That's not an excuse, though — I should have done it right away when the project became public on git. I have a point in my roadmap called "Preparing a repository for contributors," where I allocated a significant amount of time to educate myself about licenses, attributions, and so on. Unfortunately, everything unfolded in the wrong order.

https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/issues/196

I think Emma is right. Since I share my small successes with you, I also want to be transparent about my failures and mistakes. I will push the proper attributions to the repository today along with some critical fixes.

To avoid reinventing the wheel, I took some code used in federation from Pixelfed as well. Essentially, there are two projects two projects will be marked. However, I have never concealed this fact:

https://kbin.social/m/random/p/254858/The-real-reason-why-I-haven-t-published-the-pixelfed-app#post-comment-438684

I mean that I'm not a guy who wants to steal your code. It's obvious that someone will take a look at the code of a project that is very similar to theirs. Sometimes, I just become terribly messy when I have to do many things at once. This lesson will definitely teach me to prioritize tasks better.

In the end, I can only promise that once everything settles down and I manage to extract a library for ActivityPub, I will revisit the Postmill repository, this time with a pull request proposal.

You should definitely check it out.

https://postmill.xyz/ - Project page
https://raddle.me/ - Postmill instance
https://pixelfed.org/ - Of course, everyone here is familiar with this one ;)

PS. the website should be running a bit faster. I will talk about it next time.

You should always direct people to a landing page where they can choose from or be directed to multiple different instances.

https://kbin.pub/en or https://kbin.fediverse.observer/list
https://join-lemmy.org/ or https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/list

You can direct people away from specific instances if, for example, they have been de-federated.

Is there a way to convert a link to a post on another instance, into a Kbin link to the same post?

Basically, imagine someone links me to a post on Lemmy.ml or Beehaw.org, and I wish to reply to it but from my kbin.social account. What's the easiest way to do that?

There was a post about how beehaw was defederating from shitjustworks and lemmy.world about 6 hours ago. Are we involved in that, as are we a subset of lemmyworld?

https://beehaw.org/post/567170

How does this affect us? I still see beehaw posts on my 'all' page, but any content I engage with is effectively visible, I want to be sure

After using Cloudflare during #RedditBlackout, kbin.social is now using Fastly for DNS. There is an #IPv4 address but no #IPv6 address.

Vulcan will suggest native #IPv6 support.

Title,
I'm really curious because I'm new to this fediverse thing, and I wanted to know if different instances are on a peer-to-peer which could save everything no matter what happens to one instance.

Kbin Chrome app? (media.kbin.social)

Got proposed to install this on my phone. Can't be sure if it's a new thing. (If it isn't, let me know.) It's not a standalone app, just a Chrome web interface, but still good to keep that separation. The speed of adding new features has been great, all things considered.

Is there a way to filter threads/posts by language? I get this feeling there is something very simple that I am missing.

This is what Reddit currently has, and I like to go on subs and set it to all-time so I can see what the most upvoted posts are. I would like to see similar functionality on kbin as well.

#SocialMedia #Reddit #DigitalCommons: "The internet’s best resources are almost universally volunteer run and donation based, like Wikipedia and The Internet Archive. Every time a great resource is accidentally created by a for-profit company, it is eventually destroyed, like Flickr and Google Reader. Reddit could be what Usenet was supposed to be, a hub of internet-wide discussion on every topic imaginable, if it wasn’t also a private company forced to come up with a credible plan to make hosting discussions sound in any way like a profitable venture. We are living through the end of the useful internet. The future is informed discussion behind locked doors, in Discords and private fora, with the public-facing web increasingly filled with detritus generated by LLMs, bearing only a stylistic resemblance to useful information. Finding unbiased and independent product reviews, expert tech support, and all manner of helpful advice will now resemble the process by which one now searches for illegal sports streams or pirated journal articles. The decades of real human conversation hosted at places like Reddit will prove useful training material for the mindless bots and deceptive marketers that replace it." https://defector.com/the-last-page-of-the-internet

I have seen @hariette's announcement that they are working on an unofficial app for kbin and is accepting volunteers for beta testing.

I am definitely interested, but I have a question: if I enter the beta testing, what would be my responsibilities? I ask before I have never beta tested anything...

I made this script that adds a button to hide/show the media preview on the magazine view. Make sure you set Thread auto media preview to Yes.

Federated infrastructure but user sovereignty: a “third way” between federated and P2P networks.

But we don't need to go the whole P2P hog to get robust user sovereignty. Cryptography lets us separate who stores and routes data from who truly owns it. We can combine the easier infrastructure design of a federated protocol with the full decentralized security of a peer-to-peer protocol.

EDIT - someone else made this function + collapse threads already:
https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/22210/kbin-enhancement-script-Userscript-to-collapse-comments-and-add-domains

(doesn't work with microblog section of the site / only post comments )

kbin.social - I wrote a user-script to add the home-instance name after people's username (in comments and posts)

users from kbin.social have nothing appended after their name
Preview:

Can install with tampermonkey, greasemonkey etc.

This same script - but for beehaw

Hey all, I spent a bit of time today creating a user script that adds a dark blue theme and makes compact mode even more compact so you can see more threads. Here's a preview of the theme and the extra-compact mode
And here's what the normal kbin theme's compact mode looks like for comparison.
Here's a preview of a threaded comment (feat. a collapsible comments user script) showcasing alternating nested comment background colors for ease of readability

This script is brand new so feel free to leave a comment if you have any feedback or find any issues. There will be ongoing improvements made.
