One thing I'm missing on kbin versus Beehaw is that when I'm looking at comments, I can't quickly discern what instance a person is coming from. I have to hover over them on desktop or click into their profile on mobile to tell. This can be an important piece of information in interacting, since it can tell you if the person is on the same instance as you or if they're coming from a particular context (lemmygrad or a troll or right-wing community, for example).

I know kbin originally wasn't federated so this wasn't an issue but now that it is, it would be really useful to have as a setting or a default now. Thanks for your consideration!

Is it possible to create a custom list of magazines to view, like a filtered 'subscribed' list?

I'm trying to figure it out.

Some individuals are creating magazines using the names of well-known subreddits but without any content or even basic sidebar information such as descriptions and rules. Presumably, they are name squatting with the intention of gaining influence over future content moderation on kbin anticipating the growth of their magazines as more of Reddit jumps ship and searches for familiar pastures.

A community's identity lies in its content and culture of engagement, not just its name. Sure, utilizing a popular subreddit name for a magazine will initially attract users. However it's the community engagement, not the name, that motivates posters to share content. Inactive magazines void of content and engagement will discourage potential contributors. The proliferation of such dead magazines will turn people away from the site altogether, and in the process crowd out genuine initiatives by mods who actually are putting in the effort of building their community here.

If you have taken up moderation of a community, invest effort in creating a welcoming environment. This includes adding a proper description, magazine icon, and rules, as well as populating the feed with a welcome thread and some initial content. Instead of waiting for others to come and post content, take the initiative and get the ball rolling.

I understand that some individuals are name squatting preempting the name from falling into the hands of trolls or power-hungry mods and are willing to switch out when a suitable moderator shows up. The above still applies, and I request you to work a bit on your magazines as well. If it seems like too much work, consider initiating a thread on @kbinMeta offering up the post and switching out with a user who is genuinely interested in moderating and contributing to the magazine instead of leaving it dormant.

I'd like to transfer ownership of a magazine I created to another moderator. Is there a way to do this?

EDIT: Sorry I did not make this clear. I am not presenting this as a techincal problem for admins to solve, but as a community problem. The kbin.social community as the larger instance is not seeking out communities from the smaller instances.

When searching for magazines (communities) the results almost always show either kbin.social or one of the major Lemmy instances.

I can pull the domains like https://kbin.social/d/fedia.io but when i try to pull a community like https://kbin.social/m/boardgames@fedia.io I get a 404 error.

To compound the problem lemmy communities are much more discoverable because they are listed on https://browse.feddit.de/. So even kbin users are largely interacting more through lemmy communities.

As far as I know there is no such tool to browse or search communities across all kbin instances. Does anyone know if the lemmy browser can include kbin instances?

Fedia.io, the largest other kbin instance seems to have lots of communities on the vine because we largely do not interact with them. But they see the rest of the fediverse like we do.

If we want other instances to grow like kbin.social has we probably need to resolve this disconnect between kbin communities.

I just disovered that I (local admin) can edit the description, tags, etc. of a remote magazine (propably because I am marked as the owner on my instance)

983

I've subscribed to a bunch of magazines here on kbin and other lemmy communities across various instances, but I don't see a way to only show posts that I've subscribed to.

Also, is there a way to only see posts here on this (kbin.social) instance?

984

A couple lower popularity magazines I follow from lemmy.ml aren't populating with posts from those communities. Here is an example:

https://kbin.social/m/powerlifting@lemmy.ml
https://lemmy.ml/c/powerlifting

I made a test post in this community at the lemmy instance to see if it would show up on kbin, and it hasn't.

Is the syncing just lagging at the moment or is something broken?

I can create badges on the Magazine panel, so I thought I was like a flair people can use on the Magazines, but creating articles also have the option to ad a badge, so idk what they are for

Sorry if this has been asked before, I did not found an answer

Is it possible to collapse a tree of comments?

Beehaw's moderators have a good post listing the tooling needs -- all of which make a lot of sense to me. Definitely worth looking at these for kbin as well!

A question for our dear admin, @ernest , (I hope I tagged that right) what is the best way for Kbin's sake to upload pictures on here? Should we use a third party site to reduce the burden, or does that not matter much? If so, which third party site works best for Kbin's uhhh code... structure? idk, I don't know anything about websites, I just don't want to like, create problems or anything!

I am going to try and post this from lemmy.ca

If it works, I guess I've answered my own question.

Hello,
not sure if this is the right place but I've encountered few problems here at kbin.social.

  1. Sometimes my comment doesn't show up for me under a thread even though I can see it in my profile. Refresh sometimes resolves this.
  2. Sometimes when I open a thread I am suddenly "logged in" as a different user. I can even open the profile. Again, refresh sometimes helps.

EDIT: Seems like I can see the comment fine when I log out, but when logged in, I can't see it under the thread.

EDIT2: Seems like a problem with all of my comments.

I find myself enjoying this site way more than I enjoyed Reddit, this is dangerous

is there or will there be a mechanism to save threads/links that are posted? would be a nice feature to have

Is there a way to display post pictures not squished in kbin? I can only see the full size pic after clicking on it inside the thread.

Any way to click through to the linked site from the Threads page? For example, I see the translate.codeberg.org and codeberg.org posts on kbinMeta but I have to go through the comments to click the original link?

So I subscribed to a Lemmy community earlier, and according to the site there are three subscribers to that community here on Kbin, yet content is not showing up here.

Original instance: https://sopuli.xyz/c/progmetal/data_type/Post/sort/New/page/1
Lemmy.world: https://lemmy.world/c/progmetal@sopuli.xyz/data_type/Post/sort/New/page/1
Kbin: https://kbin.social/m/progmetal@sopuli.xyz/newest

The former two seem identical as far I bothered to check, with 10 posts in the past 20 hours, but Kbin only has one of them (and it's not the oldest or the most recent, either, but the second oldest).

997

On the linked page, a set of replies has multiplied 5-fold

Finding my way around kbin slowly, and making posts here and there. Text posts have been fine, though the distinction between 'threads' and 'microblogs' could use some work.

Similarly, a means of uploading images in a gallery format, or in a means that does not restrict to a strangely resized square on the main magazine would be a good addition. The video tab in uploads does not seem to work yet?

With an eye on the future, visualizing tags much like Reddit has done with Flairs might be a nice way to go about things, but what exactly are Badges?

I'm looking forward to posting more images of original content, so having these options would be great!

What is a "reputation point"? It seems to work differently than other forums I've seen in that it only counts downvotes, is that how it worked on Reddit? I never had an account there, apologies.

I currently run a magazine, and have auto-federate tags set up to help bring in relevant content. However, a lot of content I would like to federate is not using hashtags in any capacity. Is there a way I can set the magazine up to federate based on a fediverse link instead?

Specifics:

I run @DwarfFortress
I want to auto-federate in anything from @dwarffortress regardless of if a hashtag is included.

Thanks!
