It has come to my attention that the use of English in official communication is strongly discouraged in both Italy and Canada, carrying a hefty fine in both countries.

As such, I believe it is only sensible to defederate from every non-franco-italian instance effective immediately, and to replace our lacking dev Ernest as I do not believe he has the required skillset at this time.

All fediverse contributions shall be carried out henceforth in a mix of both languages to maximize benefit to the reader.

I'm extremely happy to see this instance taking a serious stance against illegal content.

It seems like the wide majority of the community does agree that its important to keep ourselves safe from the legal repercussions that might result from browsing content that is often considered illegal.

As such I am expecting the full support of the community in defederating with lemmy.dbzer0.com, which has a large focus on open discussion, promotion and aiding of internet piracy. Piracy, of course, is a crime in most every jurisdiction, including Poland.

Following this, I would also suggest that we, as a community, look into defederating with lemmy.world, federotica.com, reddthat.com and kbin.social for promoting pornography. Pornography is, of course, a crime in Malaysia, Vietnam, The Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand.

Pinging @ernest as well.

Is there a way to migrate the stylesheet from https://www.reddit.com/r/awwnimate/ to kbin?

Saw a couple of neat looking communities over on lemmy.world shared in newcommunities. I don't think they're federated yet. I thought if I followed the !communityname@instance link that would trigger federation of that community, but that doesn't seem to be happening (just getting 404). Am I missing something?

i think it would be nice if where #kbin says the magazine/community, it should also have the server attached, like instead of "technology" it should be "technology@beehaw.org"

unless it's actually combing all of those communities, im not entirely sure.

Does this post show up on Kbin community? <3

ps: you are loved <3

I'm trying to find where the logo for kbin came from, but I found nothing. Did @ernest make it himself? Was it commissioned? I'm curious.

Also does anyone have a high res version of the logo? I couldn't find any high res version of the logo.

The "make new post" endpoint seems to accept parameters in order to prefill the form, such as https://kbin.social/m/mymagazine/new?url=foo. Are there parameters for the other fields? E.g., ?url=foo&title=bar&body=baz? Tried various incantations to no avail, and didn't find them when picking through the codebase, either.

Whats the best place to post kbin change ideas to get feedback and a temp check from admins and the community before I commit time to PRs? Should I open issues on the repo, or is this mag a good fit? Or somewhere else?

At the moment, once a thread reaches a certain number of comments, those comments get separated into pages. Hopefully a toggle for this behavior can be enabled in the future?

I figure that right now it might be a server load problem especially after the large influx of users. But if it can be done for the threads themselves through the Infinite scroll option, then maybe the comments can be included as well.

This is especially helpful as kbin grows and becomes one of the places where how-to information is stored. It'll make Ctrl + F'ing through threads and comments a lot handier.

From what I'm seeing, you have to be spot-on with what you type for your search. Case sensitivity, etc.

Is there no fuzzy-search option?

I made this userscript that adds a checkbox to the sidebar that lets you turn off a magazine's custom stylesheet.

Check out the /m/kbinStyles thread for more info

Here's what it looks like

Hello, this is a client-side theme focused on high readability and removing extraneous visual widgets and icons. It is based on the way I liked to read content on that "other site."

Image

For better or worse, the current kbin layout is very "mobile" in design and not the best for reading longform text on a desktop. This theme focuses on easing the layout and hopefully making threads look more forumlike.

It does take a "scorched earth" approach in removing stuff I don't like, but everything that starts disabled can be enabled again via the radio buttons provided, allowing you to toggle on/off various widgets on the fly.

This includes:

  • sidebar
  • footer
  • activity
  • thumbnails
  • previews
  • short description
  • avatars
  • upvotes, downvotes, or both
  • icons
  • elements of the text submission form
  • numerous other elements

In addition, you can change the base color scheme via the color picker in order to globally control things like:

  • body color
  • link colors
  • upvote/downvote colors
  • blockquotes, code blocks, input fields
  • hover/focus color
  • text color
  • etc.

Disclaimer: I have tested this at 1440P on a desktop environment at various scaling levels and dimensions and it seems to mostly be OK. I have not extensively checked for glitches on mobile aside from some rudimentary mocking. If you find something wrong, feel free to make a PR or inbox me.

Frontend is not my main focus area, so there may be some anti-patterns or things that are objectively stupid, particularly around the way I manipulated elements on the grid. Again, if something is being implemented wrongly here, please advise.

Hopefully easy to answer question. I'm tryna follow an account that's on Mastodon. Is this possible at this point. When I try to search for the account I get an error. Newbie to the fediverse.

So far, I've managed to (mostly randomly) stumble into various magazines. But there's nothing at the top of the page that shows what magazine I'm in.

Once I've scrollscrollscrolled down past the last comment, then I see it: the reference to the magazine and the option to subscribe.

Surely I'm missing a better way...?

Can someone explain why I can't bring up this community through kbin?

Hi, I'd like to ask how do related magazines work? Is it AI-powered. It would be great if for example m/Malaysia can be related to its Lemmy counterparts

If you go onto your user profile page, and scroll all the way to the right, there is a section called "reputation".

What is it, and how does it work?

Is it like the "karma" system that Reddit uses?

As kbin is so new, there is no equivalent to RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite) yet. However there is an easy way to switch user accounts - at least for those of you using Firefox.

One of the official Mozilla extensions for Firefox is this:

Firefox Multi-Account Containers
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Essentially, this lets you create and use multiple browser "containers", where each container has its own set of cookies completely segregated from the others.

That means you can create one container where you are logged into kbin under your regular account, another container where you are logged into your NSFW account, another container where you are logged in under your moderator account, etc...

It's also very helpful for any other sites where you have multiple accounts and want a convenient way to switch between them (i.e. Google Mail, etc...).

You can easily switch between containers - which takes effect ONLY on that browser window, not universally. That means you can be logged into kbin, Gmail, or any place else - simultaneously under multiple accounts (i.e. one browser window has gmail logged in under your personal account, while another browser window has gmail logged in under your work account).

Just wondering because I've gotten conflicting information about it. Is kbin federating with lemmy.world now?

946

Is there a way to get an rss feed from a kbin magazine? I noticed I could do that with lemmy communities but haven't found a way in kbin yet.

Fwiw I am trying to group subscriptions in the absence of a multireddit-type feature, and rss lets you group feeds. I don't think anything like that already exists, does it?

I’ve seen a number of posts stating that they are worried that multiple instances will have overlapping magazines, like “Technology“. It’s true this will happen. But I don’t think it is a problem.

One thing I’ve learned from Mastodon, and I think it will apply to kbin as well, is that you don’t need to post for EVERYBODY on the internet. At some point, there’s a number — 1000 people, 10,000 people, or 100,000 people — where there are enough users where you can have an effective community and a nice conversation, without being so big that everything goes to sh*t.

In real life, we don’t expect to know everybody. We interact with people close to us. Maybe, this is fine in a federated community as well.

And, of course, there is still the chance that post will get really popular and percolate through the fediverse, for example, into the multiple “Technology” magazines.

In sum, I think the fediverse model will build multiple, interlinked, smaller but sustainable communities. If all you want is “reach”, it won’t be for you. But I think it will be good if you want community.

Oh man, it's the first time in my life I'm going to a meeting with friends with a laptop in my backpack. Give me a call if you need a server restart or smth ;-)
