It might be a good idea to have comment replies turned on by default, I feel like it'll help drive discussion/engagement but that's ultimately up to the devs

On an article I see: boosts (x) | reduces (x) | favourites (x)

What does "reduces" mean, what effect does it have, and how does a user reduce a post?

I see the link to boost a post, and I see "more" but this doesn't contain a "reduce" link.

Anyone know why I keep getting this message when I try to access a community/magazine through kbin?

I'm trying to add a moderator to one of the magazines I created but I'm getting an error message 'this value should not be blank.' I can open an issue on codeberg about it, but I haven't found anyone else mentioning this issue and it seems like other people would have noticed by now if adding moderators is broken. So I'm posting this first to see if I'm missing something.

On magazine panel > moderators, there is only one field for username and I have tried filling it with @name@kbin.social and just @name and both of these give me the error message. I don't see anything required missing from any of the other panel tabs. I checked the dev tools and there is no hidden field apart from a token which looks ok to me.

I get the same error on mobile safari and desktop firefox.

If I'm missing something, please lmk.

I'm a subreddit moderator, and we're looking to potentially move our community to kbin. Right now, there are a few features we feel are missing for us to ensure a successful migration. Some of these would be nice to have, while others we feel are necessary before we can move over.

Which of these features are planned to be added in the near future (or are already things that we just missed):

Images

  • Two auto image preview settings for threads: one for when you're scrolling through threads and one when you're on the page of a single thread
  • Smaller auto image previews (or a setting for auto image preview size)
  • Consistently square magazine icons
  • Images not being stretched or squashed
  • File uploading actually working

Moderation

  • Moderators having access to the magazine panel
  • Moderator permissions
  • Distinguishing posts/comments

Other

  • Post flairs or something like them
  • Search within a magazine

Thanks!

Hi there! I’m running my own lemmy instance, but considering starting up a kbin instance as well, mostly because PHP is my favorite programming language.

I’m wondering what system specs you used for your instance? What is a good hosting provider? I currently use digital ocean, but wondering if there are cheaper options out there.

I.e. on Reddit all my subreddit I've subscribed to were displayed along the top of the page. How do I navigate to them on kbin?

Seems I can go to them through my profile > subscriptions. Is that the only way?

I am assuming image hosting will be quite difficult to scale if kbin keeps growing exponentially. Currently, I believe @ernest is taking care of hosting?

I remember IMGUR being created to aid Reddit/Redditors to host images without much hassle, but what would be the best way to tackle this for kbin? Use 3rd party hosting like imgur and the like?

Regarding posting media, there are still a few functionalities that could use some work. The video button does not seem to work, and images do not respect aspect ratio in the main kbin feeds. In my opinion clicking an image in the feed should expand it (much like Reddit Enhancement Suite allowed), or the button to expand it should be more visible.

I just noticed that

  1. people don't read my comments as much here as on Lemmy so I get way fewer replies
  2. someone replied to me and I didn't see it in my notifications, even after tapping Notifications, so I had to go to the thread where he replied to me, check out all my 10+ comments, and see that one of them had a reply. I saw no other way to find this.

I have only commented so far with only positive reception, all my comments are in the positives and I only have 5 downvote all I am pretty sure coming from the same person on the same thread, yet I have -5 rep, why?

if I add my positive upvotes, likes, whatever and subtract my 5 downvotes I would have 97-5 which is 92, why do only downvotes or negative interaction count but not positive?

I've been poking around the API docs here: https://docs.kbin.pub/#introduction

But I don't seem able to get the requests to work when pointing at kbin.social. Is the API not ready? Or maybe disabled due to load?

Any guidance on this would be great.

For example, I would like to reply to this post: https://mander.xyz/post/752832

But when I do, the site simply hangs indefinitely. I have tested this on different instances. I have seen this happen only when the poster is from a kbin instance - has anyone else experienced something similar?

Well, one community, at the moment. Specifically, as the link is hypothetically pointed at, the rfk_jr_watch community at lemm.ee. Have I done something wrong in formatting that link? It also won't work as !rfk_jr_watch, and searching for it from here doesn't seem to work either.

Can you block a magazine using wildcards? I want to block certain magazine in any instance, like magazine@* or something like that.

Kbin is nice so far, though I really wish it would preserve image format in thumbnails. I keep seeing stretched out cats. Oh and uploading a file to show it in action isn't working. But I look forward to seeing this site get better and better over time!

EDIT: I guess it did work! Though it's showing an even worse stretched out mess

The current behavior (I'm using the web client) as it is displays self-post as (kbin.social) under the thread title. Not sure if it is the result of a fallback behavior.

On mobile it gets really awkward because the URL address bar would truncate to the domain + TLD (the full URL is only down once the user double press the address bar which makes it cumbersome and adds an extra layer of step) and for certain topics such as metatalk the user viewing the thread would have a higher chance of confounding it kbin metatalk instead of maybe lemmy.world meta talk, etc.

I set up an instance and got the feeling that outgoing federation is not really working. So this is testing that.

I discovered this feature some days ago, while tweaking the publish options. It's not available directly, but it can be done.

So, to upload a video, you have to select what kind of post you want to publish. In this case, select photo, or picture (I have it in Spanish, so I can see "fotografía"). Next, in the URL box, where it says "photo", you change it to "video". You press enter, and that's it.

Obviously, you have to copy/paste the URL where the video is hosted, but after that, you see a thumbnail of the video and the description. However, I don't know about publishing videos from your computer like you can do with photos.

What has happened to the nsfw content from Lemmy? It no long shows up in my feed; all or subscribed.

https://lemmy.world/post/243178 - on kbin, the thumbnail for this post is showing furry porn, notably an image that appears nowhere in the article. Any idea what's happening there?

Sorry if this isn't the right place to add this post. If I've put it in the wrong place, feel free to let me know the correct magazine.

I noticed that the on the list of Magazines section here: https://kbin.social/magazines, the "hot" tab shows mostly the kbin magazines. This made me sometimes subscribe to a magazine where the other aggregator like Lemmy already had a duplicate(same purpose).

The kbin version of the magazine shows up first since it has more subscribers, even though the other version on Lemmy has more Threads.

One example I can give is the magazines/communities Anime@kbin.social and anime@lemmy.ml.
When I search for "anime", and sort by "hot", the kbin version shows up first even though it has about half as many threads because it has much more subscribers.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, maybe it would be nice if I could sort the list of Magazines by number of threads too, rather than only the number of subscribers. After all, the anime@lemmy.ml has like 3000 subscribers on lemmy.ml, but it has only 200 on kbin.

If I could sort by number of threads a magazine has, then I might be able to find the other options of magazines. I thought there was only one magazine for "gaming" but actually there are two, and they cover the same exact topic. If I only subscribed to the "gaming" on kbin, then I would be missing out on the content from lemmy users. It might help get more unified on the fediverse. It's great if there's two "gaming" communities/mags that cover different things, but I think for this case, people would want to be able to see the threads/posts from both (and ideally not have to subscribe to both to not miss out due to misunderstanding)

Theres https://browse.feddit.de/ and https://lemmyverse.net/communities that I know of for lemmy, anything similar for the kbin side of things?

relevant magazine is /m/RedditMigration here on kbin.social. You can see it's the one and only report in the modlog yet the user who removed the comment is not listed in the moderators list, is not even a kbin.social user, and did not remove a lemmy.ml comment. Yet, it was removed for me as a kbin.social user.

How is this moderation working exactly? It's understandable that lemmy.ml mods can remove things for lemmy users, and mods on a magazine can remove things on the magazine. But it seems this is an unrelated user, removing a post of a user from an unrelated instance from a unrelated magazine.

How is this possible? what's going on here?

Edit: I checked on lemmy.world's copy and the comment is still visible, meaning the removal did not federate to lemmy.world.
