Trying to see my sub from lemmy.world, https://lemmy.world/c/wareagle. Did kbin and lemmy.world stop federating content?

How does this work on kbin at the moment?

My understanding is that, at least on Lemmy, you should be able to search for a full community name, wait a while, and have it show up and start federating. I've been searching for two communities (in the format name@instance.tld) on kbin since yesterday and it still shows no matches.

Both are small (<20 subscribers) and currently inactive (no new posts in a week). Do I need to wait until there is new content in them?

Basically, I want to be lazy and be able to click "subscribe" on any magazine/lemmy version of magazine in the threadiverse without manually changing the url to kbin.social/m/whatever@blah.tld.

Has anyone written such a browser extension already? (And if so does it support Firefox?)

Is there a discussion happening somewhere about front end changes that are in the works, or ones that are wanted?

I was thinking about submitting some pull requests for basic things like not distorting images, increasing image size on click, and comment collapsing.

I imagine the bulk of dev work is being done on back end stuff, but I feel like there's some little tweaks that would go a long way.

I'm noticing this happen more frequently, (in some cases after a few clicks).

Not doing anything crazy. Happens when viewing All (newest) and upon upvoting an article.

On a browser on my phone.

It’s from this thread. It got me thinking about how much I also like the name kbean so I drew the mascot shaped like a bean. I made the space helmet circular so changing the head and facial features would be simpler. Same goes with the suit, simplified it so it’s easier to modify. Added jet packs cause we are explorers or make it something else. Place the mascot in a square or circle canvas. The background can be anything or keep it clean.

Just throwing out ideas here. Share your drawings or concepts if you like. As @digitallyfree has said, “Developing a mascot should be a community effort”.

One of the main issues I have with the Fediverse is that I can't view any of the posts on Fedi. sites in my RSS feed. is there any way to fix this, and if not I would really like to see that feature added somehow.

What does the "dynamic lists" option in the Kbin settings do?

Just some stuff I have noticed in spending too much time on this over this weekend

  • the UI has a sidebar that renders as a super long column on mobile; updates are coming. So you will have to scroll a BIT to figure out where you are and access the menu I'm talking about below

  • There are two settings menus: one in the hamburger menu on, and then there is a small gray gear menu. The gear menu let you access themes and the mini-menu bar is at the top that help with navigation

  • most users make their subscription list private for reasons understandably, but I will look at other people's subscription list to see if there is anything I am interested in following and / or just follow the people

  • you can set your homepage to just see your subscriptions. I understand that grouping magazine subscriptions is also on the pipeline

Between having a home page in my subscriptions, and setting my notifications and just scrolling through those to see everything that has been posted in my magazines ....

.... I am having what feels like my normal show up and scroll and see what's going on experience

All of that said, another user mention the shift from consuming to producing, which is really interesting and intriguing thoughts for me personally and how I relate to the fediverse

Any other tips or tricks?

How has kbin bin (been) for you so far?

I'm fine with the top nav bar randomly inserting a bunch of magazines from around the instance. That helps with discovery of new magazines to join. However, the only option I have to view my currently subscribed magazines is the consolidated feed of them by clicking "Subscribed" or going to "All magazines". I just want a list of my current subscriptions, yes, like reddit has. It is a supremely useful feature to go between various magazines.

Again - sorry if this is a repost - but it seems like /u/ernest is listed as the owner of every single magazine that isn't on Kbin.
I'm pretty sure he's the sole moderator on Kbin for those instances; but the "owner" designation is misleading?

No need for them to chase the next big platform like reddit/facebook/google+, and no need to create "official accounts" on each.

I see that DJI has a sub on reddit for example, but you need to register an account on reddit to post there. With the fediverse, you as a customer need only one account and you could access the instance of multiple companies. DJI could run its own instance, make their rules, federate whoever they want, (will probably allow respectable instances only, like what kbin aspires to be) and that's it, they don't have to adapt to the changing rules of reddit, of twitter, of facebook. They have one point for publishing, with full control over it, with video, firmware downloads, tech support, etc.

It's so much easier for them. A perfect neutral territory, no weird jurisdiction, no worries of being muted by a Trump for example who would impose a boycott like he did on Huawei.

Why am I getting an error when I attempt to subscribe to an outside community?

This is hosted on lemmy.world, but when I hit the subscribe button, I get an error.

I was looking into the API available for Kbin and it looks like it's currently just read-only, is this correct? Is this even the case for your own instance of it?

The reference can be found here if anyone is curious. I was hoping it allowed posting of comments/new posts in some fashion that I could play with.

865

I can completely understand wanting to differentiate from Reddit, but to me, this is a matter of convenience and priority. Putting right after the article implies commenting on the article is emphasized. Putting it at the bottom of the comment page implies a want to comment on the comments.

Maybe there's a reason I'm not seeing here? Am I just dumb?

On Mastodon, reports go to the admin of your own instance, and optionally also to the instance that the post originates from. The admin of your own instance sees that you're the one who made the report, the admin of the other instance only sees which instance you are from.

On Kbin, there are potentially four levels of moderation involved, depending on how deep moderation goes here:

  • The moderators of the magazine the content is posted to
  • The admins of the instance the magazine is on
  • The admins of the instance the user is from
  • The admins of the instance you're viewing the content on

There is no indication on the report screen which of these people the report goes to. So where does it go?

As for where I think it should go, it probably should be possible to report content to any of these four, especially when it comes to content that could cause legal issues for any instance that federates it, but on the other hand not every report is going to be relevant to all of them. Ernest doesn't need to be bothered about someone posting memes about bananas in a serious magazine about serious grapefruit science, for example. Some granularity would be good.

How do i upload videos? I keep clicking "Add new videos." And it isn't working

I keep seeing mildly NSFW John Oliver posts, from RedditMigration@kbin.social. I know I can block the magazine, but I'd rather not block the entire thing. I would simply like to filter NSFW stuff from my feed. I know how to do that in Mastodon. Where's this functionality in kbin? Thanks!

see attached image, but basically having the images on the right side makes it so hard to "read" a post with an image, going back and forth with your eyes to "get" the whole post. So much easier to just put the images between the up-/downvote buttons and the text post.

I don't know if there's a reason for that besides looking different from similar sites. If so, I don't think this is the way, it really puts a strain on your eyes and our brain is not used to absorb information in this way.

Codeberg is experiencing stability issues today. I love this place, the entire ecosystem that helped me integrate repository functionality with Matrix chat room, translations, and everything in the spirit of Free and Open Software. Lately, we've been making a lot of noise there. Today, I decided to provide a small support, and I sincerely encourage everyone to chip in a few cents for the guys, they are doing an excellent job and also /kbin is a system of interconnected vessels ;)

Is it possible to group/filter multiple magazines together when browsing? So I could build up a thread view based on a topic and pull in threads from the different Magazines that I have selected?

(I understand kbin is still new so this probably doesn't exist yet.. doesn't hurt to ask in case there is a clever way of doing it)_

Maybe I am the only one to have this "problem", but for the love of me, I can't stand to face anymore the 404 Not Found errors when I type directly "m/kbinmeta" instead of "m/kbinMeta" in my url address.

Everytime I'm like "what? they closed the magazine already??" before I realize I've missed the correct font case and start cursing myself.

Maybe I was too used to it in reddit, but when I explore kbin from my desktop it is a feature I am totally missing and it's driving me insane every couple of hours :\

So, I think it could be a "nice to have feature" to be able to input those names without caring of their lower/upper case letters.

Anyway, thanks @ernest for all your hard work! This beast is positively exploding :)
