So, if I'm following correctly, Lemmy currently is experiencing a massive wave of bot registrations, and now about 800 thousand new registered accounts across several different instances are bots. What is kbin doing to prevent that, other than just being somewhat smaller and not picking up as much attention?

Server usage isn't free. I didn't see anything in the 2023 Roadmap, but it'd be great to be able to throw a monthly thanks for hitting the site a few times a day or for feature updates. It's the most sustainable way to keep this thing going. I know I'm not alone

What is this this .m3u8 file that keeps downloading every time I open the kbin homepage on firefox?

Apps are always nice, but lots of mobile websites, including the kbin one, are entirely functional as an app. In your browser you can just make a shortcut to them, and they'll appear on your home screen and act as an app.

In technical terms these are Progressive Web Apps, but it means you don't need to wait for someone to write an app (or kbin to have a good API for doing so) to use it like an app on your phone.

In Firefox it looks like this. Open the website, in the menu hit Install, drag the icon to your desktop. When you click on it it'll open the site like it's a standalone app.

Chrome is exactly the same, but the menu button is "Install App" instead.

I think we all can agree that the main thing holding back the growth of kbin and lemmy throughout all of the reddit drama is a lack of accessibility. Kbin and lemmy both capture the spirit of reddit in their style and userbase, but really lack the ease of use that led to millions of people adopting reddit. Looking at the trends, it is pretty clear that the growth of Kbin and lemmy (in terms of active users) has slowed considerably since the start of the reddit blackouts.

I think this particular wave of hype might be over. But, I am still extremely optimistic that the threadiverse will have more moments in the spotlight going forward.

The sad thing is a disconnect between people's desire to leave Reddit and the accessibility of the threadiverse. I think that, since most of Reddit is mobile nowadays, that this was the major missing ingredient of the last wave of adoption, and might have prevented most users from coming over. The great thing is that it appears that mobile apps will be public in time to ride the next wave!

So what upcoming events will give redditors another push in our direction?

  • The official end of 3rd party apps on 6/30. Not only does this disrupt the user experience for many people, but it'll really make the magnitude of the change tangible for people, especially those who only use reddit for porn, who might be using 3rd party apps but know nothing about the API issue.

  • Reigning in of explicit content. As Reddit moves towards it's IPO, admin moderation on the site is bound to step up in a big way. I can't imagine that the subs featuring extreme and graphic content will be allowed to exist by the end of the year (r/medizzy is an example, but I think that kink-specific subs will be a bigger driver). This is, importantly, going to significantly impact the user experience regardless of the actual platform you use, and may result in another round of protests.

  • Out of touch shareholders and execs. It's safe to say that the average person investing large sums into reddit's IPO won't be internet-dwelling redditors themselves. It's difficult to predict what they might fight for, but it's safe to bet that investors will want to increase the extent to which Reddit is an advertiser friendly, "clean" site. It's hard to say whether or not this will happen, but it is completely possible that investors will push to ban porn site-wide. I can't even imagine how that exodus would compare to the recent one. Reigning in piracy subs is another such possibility.

The point is that the threadiverse's growth is going to look a lot like a set of stairs. Big events on Reddit and twitter will push people towards us in big waves of mass adoption that eventually fizzle out. The most important thing we can do as early-adopters is to spread the word, especially when users are discontent. The other important thing (already happening), is that people use innovative app design to ensure that people have a "soft landing" coming here from Reddit.

Two questions from a Reddit refugee, who can't find her way around here:

  • How / where can I retrieve a list of magazines that I’m subscribed to? Via the top menu bar I can get all postings of all subscribed magazines in one big feed, but a) I like to browse by subject/magazine, and b) in the one-feed-fits-all method, the busier magazines push postings in small magazines out of sight, which is a pity.
  • is there a way to make my favourite way of reading postings and comments - by newest, instead of by hottest - a permanent choice?

Thanks!

Many of the subscriptions I'm making are to magazines that are coming from lemmy or other nstances because these are the ones making their way into my feed. Is there any downside to this in the fediverse?

Is there any reason (technical or otherwise) why I should prefer magazines that are at kbin.social (or kbin.anything) or does it literally not matter at all?

Edited to add: Thanks for all the good answers, I get it now!

Is there a way to collapse comment threads or plans to add that feature? This is my biggest issue with the UI on Kbin. Its a pain reading through comment sections without it.

Are we not federating with lemmit.online?

It's a lemmy instance which mirrors subreddits.

I can't seem to access it from kbin.social at all.

An example is: https://lemmit.online/c/AmItheAsshole

We're experiencing massive delays on the queues today. We're actively working on a solution, and I think we're getting really close. Just wanted to let you know ;)

The software is already here, I truly wish the community grows, it's solely missing the content.

I'm searching up my interests and finding magazines for those interests, but there is absolutely no content in a vast majority of them. If the curious Reddit users coming here don't find content when they search up their interests they won't stay long and this site will fail.

The people that create Magazines should also propagate content into them. If they are not passionate about the subject enough to propagate even a few starter pieces of content I wonder why they started the magazine in the first place. Do they just want to be the top mod?

This site is filled with people that are just mad at Reddit, but that anger at Reddit isn't what will cause this site to grow and become a thriving environment. This site needs content.

It looks like a new spamming tactic will be to set up your own instance and then just mass spam to other instances from there. Case in point, vive.im I've been noticing spam in one magazine from a user of this. I banned them, but they can still post for some reason. Decided to visit the instance and it looks like some default front page with '3' active users. If you look at the user's account on there they've made 12k posts already and seem to have a script set up to push their blogspam 3-4 times per minute.

  1. We need a clear process to report and get these kinds of things removed quickly.

  2. Bans need to work properly and stop these users from posting.

818

Why can a banned user from another instance continue to post to my magazine? He's clearly in the ban log but can still post.

Please help me understand how this view is intended to work. I have been seeing a lot of content on that view that I am not subscribed to. Today I deleted all of my subscriptions to try and see if the view will change and it does not. Am I missing something in how this is supposed to work, or is there a bug there at the moment?

In case it is missed in my comment below: Here is the solution:

Polymono, helped me find the issue on Codeberg where I logged it as a bug.

It seems that I inadvertently subscribed to https://kbin.social/d/kbin.social which is a meta group of the entire server. The problem is that you can only see that you are subscribed if you go there directly. It does not show in your subscription list.

Unsubscribing from there resolved my problem.

Thanks to Polymono for the help.

I've not seen this mentioned anywhere. Might be a warning for some. Favorite/Reduces voting records on this platform are public. This platform requires an email address, at least it did for me. Can't make a throwaway account as easily here to my knowledge.

Overtime voting records contain a lot of info about a person. If for some reason the two accounts are connected a lot can be learned about a user using this platform. Might be a good idea to use your alt/secret email address if that is a concern.

I generally like to browse Newest but noticed its only coming up with posts from this instance again RIP

This is going to be kbin focused because that's the infra I'm most familiar with, but if any part of this is relevant to Lemmy and other upcoming aggregators it's worth a think too:

  • in the more microblogging part of fedi, it's been about week and some of active discussions because of the reveal that FBMeta is developing its own Project 92, or Barcelona, a competing service to Twitter (called Threads) that supposedly will be using ActivityPub

  • it's followed up by confirmation that there's been overtures to those running big (in size) instances esp on the Masto protocol to meet (Eugen never confirmed but in deleted posts talked about the idea of a meeting even with NDA positively; Universeodon definitely confirmed taking a meeting. Universeodon admin also runs a threadiverse instance (kbin). No one else, and in fact more confirmed they didn't: Dan who does Pixelfed and runs the Fedi database; Chris who's one of the admins of calckey.social; Jerry who does infosec.exchange and also runs a kbin instance)

  • the big discussion is if then Fedi instances should federate with Threads. There's a Fedipact now of those who won't and will outright block. There's more who's being cautious and have decided on preemptively silencing (so conditional following). There's those who wants to wait and see.

  • I'm bringing this over to the kbin side because of the three concerns: political (extend, embrace, extinguish playbook means standards-setting work will be under threat of an eventual oligopoly); privacy (data scraping and surveillance capitalism is a known thing, legal or otherwise); and infrastructure (the full blast of new Threads accounts and the way AP and esp Masto does JSON will mean the perpetual fetching will overwhelm smaller instances) - the most particular for threadiverse is on technical capacity.

  • most instances are still finding their feet. What measures are already in place short of defed to help admins not get overwhelmed? What measures are being worked on?

  • kbin does scraping posts very well. Even untagged posts end up here on kbin.social because the 'random' magazine was created. What can instances do to not become a risk vector for at-risk persons who probably didn't realize this protocol (that's not even a year old) has been quietly slurping their posts in machine-readable forms all this time?

I've been super enjoying my time here, and if i know where we can collectively stand on this, it will take a load off of my mind.

I'm not new to fedi but I'm still trying to understand federation with these new projects.

I can sub to magazines/communities hosted elsewhere.

Can I also post there? I see them offered in the dropdown on this composition page so it seems like I can.

To be clear, I'm talking about posting to them with my current account, on kbin.social. Not going and making an account there.

825

I already went into my settings and changed the dropdown to Subscriptions and saved the changes, but when I click the kbin home button it still shows me the /all feed.

Am I misunderstanding something here? Does the button shaped like a house not actually mean home?
