While reading this article https://kbin.social/m/france@lemmy.world/t/97300/Consulation-sur-la-direction-de-cette-communaute I observed OP said something about the community being over 1000 members, yet in the sidebar it was showing to me (in kBin) there were only 92. I double checked by going to lemmy.world and those 92 were ONLINE subscribers.

Has anyone else encountered this bug?

Since we are building new communities, it's important that those of us who want to play an active role setting up these communities, either as active users or moderators, know when people engage in them.

I would like to know if it's possible to get notifications when posts are made in certain communities.

I viewed my own comment on both my profile and in the original context of the post I commented on. The text enclosed by two tildes previously appeared as striked through, as you would usually get in Markdown when enclosing text with two tildes. But now it doesn’t appear to be striked through, it just shows two tildes enclosing the text. I’m not sure why this is happening. It appears like this both on kbin.cafe and kbin.social.

It’s also relevant that this very post has an issue. When you click on it to view it, the link appears correctly. When you just see its preview in m/kbinMeta, the link does not appear as a link but as the raw text you use to set up links with the square brackets and parentheses.

So does anybody have a walkthrough on how to set this beastie up? I'm not unfamiliar with docker and containers (I have personal Mastodon, Nextcloud, and Synapse Instances running via docker-compose)

Sort of where I'm stuck right now is what I need to change in the .env file, per the instructions here:

$ sudo apt-get install git
$ git clone https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core.git kbin
$ cd kbin
$ mkdir public/media
$ sudo chown 82:82 public/media
$ sudo chown 82:82 var
$ cp .env.example .env
$ vi .env # esc + !q + enter to exit
or
$ nano .env

Make sure you have substituted all the passwords and configured the basic services in .env file.

(yes, I know it's somewhat commented, but it's not exactly super clear) and also how to handle building it in a non-local configuration (my VPS is elsewhere, so going to kbin.localhost to do anything isn't really going to work)

So yeah, ELI5.

How do I cancel a post or reply?

Let's say I am writing a post or reply and I decide... "nevermind." How do I cancel, maybe I am missing something obvious, but I usually have to refresh the page or navigate away.

Reddit has the hotkeys for previous / next post, P / N.

Such hotkeys would be useful here too, same, different, or even custom, e.g. left / right arrow keys.

Buttons for previous / next post would be nice too, so we could open post and then just click to "previous post" button to switch to newer and newer posts, same place, single click, even better as reddit.

Other keyboard shortcuts could be similar to reddit too, upvote, downvote, etc.

Hi there, in the upcoming kbin releases, I will be describing the changes along with author tags, but for now, you can check out what's happening here: https://codeberg.org/Kbin/kbin-core/activity, as well as my personal feed: https://ernest.dev

Today, two test instances will be created where we will be looking for bugs for some time, and then the changes will be rolled out to kbin.social and hopefully other instances as well :)

I want to accept as many pull requests as possible, currently, there are still 50 open ones. I'm also following your posts and adding new things to the to-do list.

Have a nice day!

KDE just created their own Lemmy instance https://lemmy.kde.social/ and I would like to see it on kbin

759

I've noticed this when searching for a few differemt Lemmy communities on different instances where it will load for a second and then nothing happens or it will reselect the text box. Normally if Kbin can't find the community it will say "nothing" but there are certain communities that don't even show that, almost like it can't load it. Is this an issue of the instance I'm searching for is having federation issues? Or is it something on Kbin's end?
I've mostly seen it with communities from lemmit.online but I've also seen it on a few others. I know Lemmit was having some issues but they were supposedly fixed (but they still aren't showing up), and I've started seeing that search error happen with a few others instances now too

(Also for clarification I am talking about the main search bar not the magazine search, these are communities that I'm trying to start the federation on Kbin but they aren't showing up on the search)

There’s a community on lemmy instance I’m subscribed to. This community has posts that were created before anyone on my kbin instance subscribed to that community. Those posts never federated over to my kbin instance. Is there a way for me to reply to those older posts without having to create an account for that lemmy instance?

So I was messing with the CSS for my own magazine, and I've somehow managed to bricked it. When you try to go to /m/internet_funeral, you'll see nothing. I've tried to change it back, but I can't access anything.

IDK when this will be fixed (or even if it's reversible), but I just wanna warm anyone who changed the CSS of your magazine, as you can brick your magazine if you mess it too much. Hopefully @ernest can quickly fix this, since this is a pretty dangerous bug.

I'll gladly be the sacrificial lamb for everyone else.

EDIT: Thank you @llama for the fix.

Try opening the inspection panel in your browser and disabling CSS, you should be able to do this in both chrome and Firefox. This should be able to at least get you back to the page where you can edit the css and fix it.

I'm still gonna keep this post up in case someone else has this problem.

Would be kinda cool if there was a system to donate money to a magazine and then have that revenue automatically get split between highly ranked content of that magazine.

Do new threads created on Kbin get propagated to Lemmy instances? Or is only the reverse true?

Images on posts? (kbin.social)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by Enttropy@kbin.social to c/kbinMeta@kbin.social

So, I just arrived to the Fediverse and went to create my magazine, but I just realized that adding photos to your posts just makes these hyperlinks, but there seems no way to add the photos to the body of the message like you would in a blog, forum or Reddit.

What is like is to say, have a paragraph of text, then an image, then more text, then another image and so on.

Am I doing something wrong or could this be achieved with a css/html line in the body of the message?

EDIT: Argentcorvid’s suggestion of not putting anything into the brackets: https://en.meming.world/images/en/e/e2/Crying_Cat_with_paw_up.jpg

I already understood that, for now, the Kbin upvote not really upvote a post/comment and to do so, I need to boost it.

But, how do Lemmy (and possibly other sites from Fediverse) deal with this difference?

For example:
If I boost a Lemmy post in Kbin, it'll count as an upvote on Lemmy? Or do I need to upvote it when it's a cross-post from another Fediverse?
And how does Lemmy understand a boost in post at Kbin?
Also, if someone at Lemmy upvote my post in Kbin, it'll count as an upvote or as a boost?

Looking for clear guidelines on what is/isn't allowed to be posted on kbin. thanks

I'm new to kbin and lemmy and still learning the ropes.
I'm subscribed to https://kbin.social/m/diablo@lemmy.world and there's a 2 hour old post there, but I don't see it on https://kbin.social/sub. Is that normal?
Is /sub intended as the "home page" like it is on reddit?

I am trying to access requests@lemmit.online and it I cannot via kbin as I would need to in order to be able to make a post.

769

Like the title says, if you want to upvote something on KBin, you should use the Boost link, not the upvote button (Why? Don't know...)

The upvote button doesn't seem to do much, but Boost accomplishes what Reddit's upvote did. So if you're looking to encourage a post, use the Boost link.

It seems like on /kbin the moderator of a Lemmy community always shows as the /kbin instance owner which makes me wonder.

771

Like the title says, I'd like to know what's going on with KBin federation? Lemmy content is federating to pretty much all other Lemmy instances just fine, but anything on KBin is taking a very long time to show up on Lemmy, if it ever shows up at all.

On Lemmy.world, I am subscribed to a bunch of kbin.social subs that are in pending state for 2 days now... the few that have gone from pending to joined have zero content show up on Lemmy.

/m/anime_titties for example has many articles on here, but show none at all on Lemmy.world.

Can anyone explain the problem behind this and when there's an expected fix?

772

I'm confused by my reputation point count (-36). I've skimmed over my comments and my posts to see how they've done, and there's no way they've gotten more downskids than upnoodles in aggregate. What gives? Is that number not what I think it is?

773

I'm seeing discussions on other instances about how a "federated" corporate instance should be handled, i.e. Meta, or really any major company.

What would kbin.social's stance be towards federating/defederating with a Meta instance?

Or what should that stance be?

Feature Request: upvote/downvote coloring?

Came here from reddit. I can't tell if i have upvoted a post or not, as the coloring difference is very minor. This creates a frustrating experience on kbin. Can we get upvote/downvote coloring please. Not sure if i am posting in the right magazine. Thank you for reading.
