Is anyone else having trouble viewing any federated communities on kBin? I can't search for any federated communities and I'm kinda stumped.
I initially thought I had just clicked off on the 'Status' under the federation icon, but it's definitely on, tried toggling a few times to be sure.

I can't see any communities outside of kbin.social that I've tried so far.

This is a feature I really miss from Reddit. I'm not interested in getting inbox notifications on everything I post, especially if I've posted an article that's really blown up and I've already gotten the response I was looking for.

It's my assumption that they are supposed to function like flair; for instance, on a game magazine I mod, I'd add a badge so a post could be flared for a specific platform for patch notes, and users could search for their "platform specific" posts.

Am I misinterpreting that? Or is that what it's intended use is and it's just not functional for now?

Thanks for any help!!

Is there a plan to enable the use of blockchain accounts such as MetaMask in order to be able to log into different federated plattforms (kbin, lemmy, ...)?

Is it possible or at least planned? Tried to find info on that without much luck.

I discovered yesterday evening that Lemmy.ml is blocking all inbound ActivityPub requests from /kbin instances. Specifically, a 403 'access denied' is returned when the user agent contains "kbinBot" anywhere in the string. This has been causing a cascade of failures with federation for many server owners, flooding the message queue with transport errors.

This doesn't appear to be a mistake; it has been done very deliberately, only on Lemmy.ml. Lemmy.world and other large instances do not exhibit the same behavior. It also isn't a side effect of the bug introduced in Lemmy 0.18. You can observe by sending the following in a terminal

> curl -I --user-agent "kbinBot v0.1" https://lemmy.world/u/test
HTTP/2 200
[...]

> curl -I --user-agent "kbinBot v0.1" https://lemmy.ml/u/test
HTTP/2 403
[...]

> curl -I --user-agent "notKbinBot v0.1" https://lemmy.ml/u/test
HTTP/2 403
[...]

> curl -I --user-agent "placeholder-user-agent" https://lemmy.ml/u/test
HTTP/2 200
[...]

Additional evidence of this not being a Lemmy 0.18 bug:

  • This occurs when making web requests to any location on the Lemmy.ml webserver, not just ActivityPub endpoints.

  • Go to https://fedidb.org/software/lemmy and pick an instance running 0.18.0. Perform the above commands, replacing the URL for Lemmy.ml with that particular instance's address.

If this continues, my instance may need to defederate from Lemmy.ml. This is especially problematic because Lemmy.ml continues to federate information outbound to other kbin instances while refusing to allow inbound communication from them.

Spoofing the user agent is less than ideal, and doesn't respect Lemmy.ml's potential wish to not be contacted by /kbin instances. I don't post this to create division between communities, but I do hope that I can draw awareness to what's going on here. Defederating /kbin instances entirely would even be better than arbitrarily denying access one-way. This said, we should all attempt to maintain a good-faith interpretation until otherwise indicated by the Lemmy developers. It's possibel that this is a firewall misconfiguration or some other webserver-related bug.

Relevant comment from me (#354 - [BUG] Critical errors/failed messages during messenger:consume)

Edits:

  • Yes, people have already tried reaching out to the Lemmy instance admins in their Matrix room with no answer.

  • Someone has posed a question on Lemmy.ml about the block here: https://lemmy.ml/post/1563840

Is it possible to appoint moderators from a different instance to that my magazine is hosted on? I can add them, but if I go to a different kbin instance it shows the moderator as only the site admin. On Lemmy it shows no mods at all.

Should this be possible? Should it work across kbin/Lemmy? How does it work on Lemmy (or does it not work there either?)

Hi there ! (First post ever yay!)

I’m, like a lot of users lately, been migrating from Reddit to Kbin and Lemmy.

I finally had a good reason to contribute by writting HelmCharts to run Lemmy and Kbin on Kubernetes ( hopefully some of you might be interested !)

Anyways, i was wondering whrn analysing the docker stack of Kbin if instead of running postgresql, it could be replaced by a NoSQL service such as MongoDB.

I felt like the concept of the fediverse and the data structure seem pretty compatible.

And since there have been some performance issues ( probably for database) lately, it might be an interesting way to deal with large volumes of data.

Let me know what you think !

Cheers!

Regarding hate communities that try coming here , there's also m/trutrans a truscum community i saw on top bar one day while working on userstyle

Currently empty but kill it before it takes root , hope these communities get banned and we defederate from instances like that

EDIT : Gonna use this to compile mags i encounter

EDIT 2 : Mags now listed here for better (organization|readability)

I see that there's a Messages section in the dropdown under my name, I assume that's for direct messages, but I can't seem to figure out how to actually send one.

Is it an incomplete feature? Am I wrong about what "Messages" is?

Basically title. Can I still browse other instances from within kbin.social, even though the admin (of kbin.social) has decided not to federate certain instances?

@ernest how do I report a Magazin on kbin.social ? There is a usere called "ps" who is posting to his own "antiwoke" Magazin on kbin.social. Please remove this and dont give them a chance to etablish them self on kbin.social. When I report his stuff it will go to him because he is the moderator of the magazin? Seems like a problem. Screenshot of the "antiwoke" Magazin /sub on kbin.social. 4 Headlines are visible, 2 exampels: "Time to reject the extrem trans lobby harming our society" "How to end wokeness" #Moderation #kbin #kbin.social 📎

edit: dont feed the troll, im shure ernest will delet them all when he sees this. report and move on.

Edit 2 : Ernest responded:
"I just need a little more time. There will likely be a technical break announced tomorrow or the day after tomorrow. Along with the migration to new servers, we will be introducing new moderation tools that I am currently working on and testing (I had it planned for a bit later in my roadmap). Then, I will address your reports and handle them very seriously. I try my best to delete sensitive content, but with the current workload and ongoing relocation, it takes a lot of time. I am being extra cautious now. The regulations are quite general, and I would like to refine them together with you and do everything properly. For now, please make use of the option to block the magazine/author."

Seems like something on KBin changed from the day I first signed up to today. I distinctly remember at the top where it says:

kbin /m/AskKbin Threads(#) Microblog(#) People

There used to be another option for "Magazines" in which it was a search engine for magazines here and on Lemmy. That's how I set up an initial assortment of topics I was following.

It's no longer there. If I do a search for say "emacs" it's pulling up ActivityPub mentions of emacs in posts, but not actual communities.

Am I crazy and I imagined it, or is it something that was up there, but disappeared. Maybe I accidentally selected something that turned it off!

In the interim, if I'm looking for a topic, what's the best way to find a magazine about it? In this particular case I was trying to find the Lemmy Emacs community, but honestly in the end I just prayed and used /m/emacs@lemmy.ml and that worked and I subscribed. But it'd be nice to have a less hail Mary method. Thanks!

Does anyone know of a way to see posts/comments made by people you follow?

What it says on the tin (tm).

I created a magazine because I wanted to try to start the same kind of community I was a part of on Reddit. Two of the moderators from the subreddit have contacted me. I'd like to add them as moderators. But I don't see any way to do it. When I go to the magazine I created, and click on 'moderators' in the lower right hand corner, I get a 50x error ("We are working on resolving the issues. Over the next few days, there will be a change in server infrastructure. Temporary problems with the website's functionality may occur during this time.")

Is it possible to add multiple moderators to a single magazine at this time? If not, is there a way to transfer ownership of an existing magazine, short of giving them my account? Because, I'll be honest here, I don't have the time and tech know-how to do a great job, and the people I've been speaking with already have a few years of experience with herding cats.

Is Kbin planning on federating with meta/Facebook when they introduce their new twitter like instance through activitypub?

I know there have been a few of these posted recently, but I modified a few of the ones I found to add one additional feature: If the page you are on is already the remote version, but for the wrong local instance, to still update that to your preferred local instance.

Much easier to explain what I mean with examples so here's some:
https://lemmy.world/c/technology -> https://kbin.social/m/technology@lemmy.world
https://lemmy.world/c/asklemmy@lemmy.ml -> https://kbin.social/m/asklemmy@lemmy.ml

The first they all do, the second is the feature I added.

Here's the code, just manually create a bookmark and enter this as the URL, with whatever you want as the name. Then go to a page for a community you want to see in your local instance and click the bookmark, and it should take you to that local version of that page.

It's set up to take you to kbin.social versions of page, but you can change that by editing the home_instance_domain and the home_instance_char.

javascript:(function(){
var home_instance_domain = 'kbin.social';
var home_instance_char = '/m/';
var prefix = 'https://';

var url = new URL(document.URL);
var base_url = url.hostname;
var path_name = url.pathname;
path_name = path_name.replace(/\/\w\//, home_instance_char);
if (path_name.includes(home_instance_domain)) {
  path_name = path_name.replace(/@.+/, '');
  new_url = prefix + home_instance_domain + path_name;
} else if (path_name.includes('@')) {
  new_url = prefix + home_instance_domain + path_name;
} else {
  new_url = prefix + home_instance_domain + path_name + "@" + base_url;
}
console.log(new_url);
window.location.href=new_url;
})();

Edited to also handle being on the federated version of you home instance, like this:
https://lemmy.world/c/privacy@kbin.social -> https://kbin.social/m/privacy

Is there a way to have thumbnails on Kbin to maintain their aspect ratio? Or can Kbin be updated so that thumbnails maintain their aspect ratio?

I have been trying to grow this community. I've made some good progress, but despite all that I'm still the sole contributor. What are some tricks to encourage others to post content?

747

This is the way that Reddit and Hacker News function. When browsing the feed on those sites I middle click the post and the comments link to open both up in new tabs but on kbin both links open the same page.

748

Is there a way in kbin to search specific magazines when looking for information? Looks like you can set specific communities or if its a post or comment using Lemmy, but the search on kbin is just a single text field.

I just realized that it might not be a technical issue that I can't subscribe to any kbin.social magazines from my one-person lemmy instance but that I might not be on the whitelist.

Every time I try to subscribe to any magazine I get "Subscription Pending". First I thought it was some technical issue, cloudflare, server overloaded, etc. especially because I had similar issues with lemmy instances.

Today I updated to lemmy 0.18.0 and all the lemmy servers started letting me subscribe, but not /kbin but perhaps there is something incompatible. But I found threads about people subscribing to kbin from lemmy successfully. And then I was reading https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/93050/How-do-I-request-federation and then it dawned to me that I might just either not be on a whitelist or even worse on a black list.

How is it supposed to work?

Is this the reason why my single-user instance can't subscribe to any https://kbin.social magazine? I'm not even getting an error, just "Subscription Pending". That sounds kind of broken and different to how Mastodon is dealing with that issue.

Do I somewhere need to apply to be able to subscribe to any /kbin magazines? If so where do I do that? Is there a email I can sent my application to? Or is the idea that if you have a single user instance you create a new user on every instance to find some meta-magazine where you can ask to be able to subscribe to a magazine on that instance?

Or are small instances not part of the design?

I also see that my comments in threads of other instances which kbin federates with don't show up here either, which is understandable if my instance is banned.

Can I somehow follow hashtags on kbin?
I would love to see posts or articles with certain hashtags
