I want a bookmark or save function like reddit and Mastodon have.
I need to see the manager about this.

How does indexing new magazines/communities on other federated sights work? For instance, on Lemmy.world, someone made a community called Flightradar24 that I want to follow. I can’t access it via Kbin. /m/flightradar24@lemmy.world returns a 404. Is the community too new and Kbin just needs to index/discover it “eventually”? It also doesn’t show up in the magazine search. Thanks!

As we in the U.S. are on our Christmas-in-July mini-vacation, let us celebrate the departure from yet another evil empire who abused those in their charge for the sake of their own ego.

Peasants defeated the gentry. From the French Revolution to the American Revolution to Brexit, it's the story of not just a free people, but of the world.

Does anyone know why some federated instances have stopped updating? Like https://kbin.social/m/manga@lemmy.ml appears to be 1 week old.

I’m a Reddit refugee who was on that platform for 10+ years. I saw not just a tremendous amount of controversies, but attempts at introducing alternatives to Reddit during all of them. The 2015 blackout saw a ton of alternatives suggested, and if you go back and look at them many have either not survived or never achieved their stated goal of serving as a viable alternative to Reddit. Places like Voat, Ruqqus, or Parler promptly turned themselves into extremist shitholes and imploded. The truth is most internet communities which found and advertise themselves as an alternative to Reddit die.

However, I think this newest wave of searching for an alternative has more legs than I think I’ve ever seen, and the key to that is the kind of users who are moving. The people who were pissed off by the recent changes are the old guard of the internet. These are the people who still remember searching for and finding RIF, Apollo, or AlienBlue (before it was bought), and have the technical know-how to care about the quality and usability of their platform. I think you all are people who engage with their online spaces with intention, and because of that I believe that we have more of a shot at making this work than I’ve witnessed since I joined Reddit all those many years ago.

In order to make this all work out though, I think it’s really important to cast our thoughts toward what made the websites that have come before us successful. Every single one of these spaces have distinct ways of interaction that indirectly communicate their ideologies. Memes, in-jokes, and lingo form the backbone of online communities and help to direct users back to the source, but they never gain real purchase without a unique viewpoint. I’m pretty sure I can confidently suss out whether a meme comes from 4Chan, Reddit, or Tumblr, just through the message conveyed and the template used. For an online platform to have relevance and draw, I believe it absolutely needs to have an individual and communicable perspective.

Now I am aware that much of this is organically generated, but I think we underestimate how much of it isn’t. The structure of a website clearly communicates to users its core values, and users almost certainly respond to that. The fact that users are by default anonymous on the Chans absolutely contributes to the unique “flavor” of those websites, and the subreddit structure of Reddit allows it to contain a greater variety of clashing values. We can already see some of this on the Fediverse, the tension engendered by the federated instances I think places greater emphasis on building consensus. The fact that an entire server can be excised at will from a group of other like-minded server owners means that one has to always have an eye towards the common consensus, and I think we will see many fights over this in the not-so-distant future.

So as we go forward, and while we are in the most nascent part of this website’s lifespan, I think we should be discussing and commenting on what we think is most important about this space. I’m already seeing that people think that Kbin is “nicer than Reddit” and you’re more convinced that you’re interacting with real people. I think this is all good, and I think that while we’re making content, we need to have an eye on putting that particular spin on all the things we brought over from where we came from. Eventually, we need to get to the place where we’re creating unique meme formats, and having our own slang, but for right now we need to be thinking hard about what we want out of our online lives and how this website can be built to serve those purposes. I think the risk of not doing that, and forever being only a federated Reddit clone is going to leave people forever jonesing for the experiences they had on Reddit, and this space is going to die just like every other attempted alternative has before.

TLDR: Now that we've all left Reddit, for this new place to live my opinion is that we need to have more discussions about what our principles are, and we need to make unique content that brings people to this website.

I tried Jerboa briefly and couldn't get it to work well for me. Then I visited kbin on my phone's browser and was prompted to install the kbin app!? I haven't seen any references to it, but it's exactly what I wanted...? Has anybody else tried it?

So, this is coming from a reddit user. I don't really understand the microblog button and how/what kind of content it gives you and how it's organized. Can some one give a brief summation.

It seems that the developer for Pixelfed is creating a kbin app. Any thoughts on integrating upload/hosting support for pixelfed into posts here? I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but it seems like integrating between other open source and decentralized ActivityPub software might help adoption of the fediverse overall.

So, I have some doubts about a few things, if they are even possible/if they are working as intended/if they are coming soon.

1- Is it the intended beheaviour that the numbers of subscriptions seen from kbin and seen from Lemmy differ?

2- Is there any way to search for a username?

3- When searching for communities, will there be a way to filter/order by nuber of Threads/Comments/Posts?

4- I prefer in my home to look at content I've subscribed to, is there a way to set it as my preference to not look at the ALL page, but subscribed page instead?

I'm new at the fediverse and really confused. Whenever I view magazines/communities on my kbin.social account, different posts show up than when I view on an account from a lemmy instance. Is this by design? Also viewing magazines/communities on my kbin account show very old posts. How can I see newer posts?

I obviously appreciate the work @ernest has done and the team that's working on kbin but I'd like to know more about you. I apologize if the answers to these questions have been already answered.

  • What made you want to create kbin?
  • What are your goals with kbin?
  • Personal opinions or philosophy worth noting or the driving force behind kbin?
  • How can I support kbin?

so is kbin defederated from lemmynsfw? Is there a list anywhere of who is defederated?

Again, based on @FixedFun 's original designs so creds to them for the idea.

Thoughts about these ones? For the one on the right, I tried a different angle to hopefully give more bird and less bald man.

On Reddit, browsing r/All by new would show so much spam, it was really pointless if you just were looking for content. One relied on reddit's algorithm to show you new stuff you hadn't actively searched for. The nice thing about Kbin, and the threadiverse in general, is that you can browse m/All by New as see genuinely interesting posts.

I hope this is the right place to ask and it's probably just me missing something obvious, but I'm having trouble uploading a picture (and previously a tiny video) from my desktop (win10) to either comment or as a post.

I'll get the little "add media" window up, select the file from my system, but then clicking "upload file" does nothing.

Any suggestions?

It seems that any Lemmy.world and Lemmy.ml hosted communities aren't any longer federating properly via kbin as I started getting 404 errors on all of them. Examples:

https://lemmy.world/c/personalfinance: ok
https://kbin.social/m/personalfinance@lemmy.world: 404

https://lemmy.ml/c/fire: ok
https://kbin.social/m/finance@lemmy.ml: 404

https://beehaw.org/c/finance: ok
https://kbin.social/m/finance@beehaw.org: ok

You can now use Lemmy Explorer to easily look up Communities and generate kbin-friendly links!

  1. Go to https://lemmyverse.net/

  2. Click on "Communities" on top center

  3. Click on the house button on top right, and enter "kbin.social" as your instance (or any other kbin instance you may be using)

  4. Toggle switch below on for "Instance links use /m/" (yellow)

  5. Browse, search, and sort as you wish

  6. All links will be in the in the https://kbin.social/m/community@instance.tld format :)

Kbin has seen a staggering amount of growth in the past few weeks, and with it a bunch of discussion about issues and bugs.

Constructive criticism will help make kbin even greater, but i wanted to take some time to appreciate how great of an app it has been to use these past few weeks, and to the sole developer @ernest for all the long hours put in to keep things running smoothly.

Keep up the great work!

Ernest just posted some comments clarifying recent changes to Votes, Boosts, Favorites, and Reputation Points:

  • Upvotes & Downvotes function akin to Reddit
  • Boosts count as two Upvotes (link)
  • Favorites are added to https://kbin.social/fav if you Upvote (link)
  • Reputation Points have been updated

In addition to that, Ernest stated that "there is no connection between reputation points and sorting algorithms. It's just info in the profile" (link)

It finally happened: many Reddit 3rd party apps have officially shut down. With it comes an influx of users looking for a new place.
With the influx come new points of view, new kinds of users with different expectations. This change is already visible, with obvious trolls and attention seekers throwing out bait. What if there is more to it however?

Browsing casually I noticed more and more kbin posts critical of its development, its functioning, and the speed at which @ernest is able to implement updates.

I find it odd that, while denouncing kbin for its current flaws in deployment (despite being clearly stated to be in alpha) the owner of that instance proceeds to praise Lemmy and wave away concerns regarding its devs who

(Lemmy devs) are willing to create a product that makes the entire internet better, and share it with everyone, for free, regardless of your beliefs.

despite having proven that their politics do affect their product.

"Just defederate" in my opinion also is not an argument. It's closing your eyes to a problem propagated by those who benefit from influence from the shadows - on both sides of the political spectrum.

Hence my mention of FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, Doubt) and Tribalism.
Pushing users towards a preferred platform (in this case, Lemmy) by seeding threadiverse posts with statements such as

  • kbin isn't ready
  • kbin won't have the same engagement as Lemmy
  • the single kbin dev @ernest doesn't have enough time/skill
  • it will never be as good as Reddit

will just lead to Reddit 2.0 painted in red and yellow. As kbin users, we should combat this kind of behavior.

We're all here for a better threadiverse, and a singular means of interacting will not be beneficial to its growth. The reason we're here is because we want a Reddit-like environment, not a single 'frontpage of the internet'. Tribalism in the threadiverse will get us nowhere fast.

Perhaps it was unintentional that kbin was not federating properly with Lemmy instances. What I am afraid of is, knowing the track record of Lemmy devs, it follows a scary trajectory, reminiscent of a few tried and true tactics Reddit and others have used before.

I'd like to state that I am not unbiased. I am helping out with Artemis, a kbin app currently in development.
I do not want to support or make use of Lemmy for many reasons. However, I could not care less if someone is from a Lemmy instance, or if I interact with them in that same space. If I see Lemmy.ml/Lemmygrad.ml behind their name, I will be cautious of their intentions however.

Let's hope we, not as 'rexxiters', 'kbinauts' or 'lemmings', but as fediverse users can actually create a product that makes the entire internet better, and share it with everyone, for free, regardless of our beliefs.

I'm part of a few communities where we discus TV shows and it's important to be able to hide spoilers. Be it on the title, the body of the text, or even blur images that are attached to the article.

Is it here a way to do this on Kbin?spoilers,
