@pollodiabolo - this user is a karma whore of epic proportions and they have made a shit load (10-15+) accounts on kbin that boost and upvote each other while sometimes mass downvoting others that have posts trending towards the top - all to farm karma.

See top comment on this thread

You will continue to see me calling out this person and their alts. This can't and won't become another Reddit and karma whoring folks need to be called out and discouraged.

The following accounts are all the same person and in the very unlikely event they are not, they are still collectively vote manipulating.

@pollodiabolo @journalism_died @ishitwhite @muftiboy @kilkennygriffin @jeremyfurzen @syscollapse @riseupagainstthem @ruse-of-metacarpi @johnson_waters @cazzodicristo @at-fieldu @the-big-lie @Schluchtschiss @fuckoffyoudumbcunt @extremelybullish @cringeminge4 @NoCunteryForOldMen @yesbabyyy @kneel_pleb

A few of these accounts have since cleared their boosting history but with some common sense it should be easy to verify.

If I get mass downvoted, be sure to see the age of the accounts as well as whether they are on this list to gauge their authenticity. I am pretty sure this won't reach many but I'll spam it enough times so it eventually will.

EDIT: This is not a comprehensive list and there are obviously more alts. These are beyond a reasonable doubt involved in mass self-upvoting.

EDIT2: Almost every downvote I have on this post are by accounts that were made after I posted this. They all belong to the same user that I have called out here. This is pathetic and should be proof enough that vote manipulation is something we need to deal with.

EDIT3: More accounts to add to the list: @puny_human @latvianbloke @pedanticc @SONOFNAT

EDIT4: And now they've started to remove their downvotes from new accounts and add them from the list. Bruh I don't even get it at this point. I'm just gonna go to bed that person's a headache to figure out honestly. Night y'all.

Name and shame karma farmers.

EDIT5: This is an excellent example, you might see some familiar names

Image in case they decide to retract their votes again

Hi. I have tried typing some CSS rules into the CSS field in my magazine's Appearance Panel, but I don't see any change when I save it. Can someone give me some pointers on what to put in the field?

I tried a rule with a selector like div: {background-color: red} and also just a plain rule like background-color: red.

Thanks!

EDIT: Ok, duh, I forgot how to do CSS. I forgot I don't need the colon after the selector. If I View Source I can see the contents I put in the CSS field in a <style> tag in the page head. Also, I had a space after the colon separating the CSS property and its value. So, this works: article.entry {background-color:black}.

The browser developer tools are your friend! I hope this helps someone!

As a former redditor that's never really used Twitter, I spend most my time here using Threads, but I'd like to actually check out the Microblog section.

However, when I go to Microblog, I just get a stream of everything. Is there a way to follow certain hashtags? When they appear, I can click on them to see posts with that tag, but I don't see how to "follow" or "subscribe" to arbitrary tags. Am I missing something?

Hi there! So I'm two weeks in to kbin and I think I have a layman's understanding of the fediverse, but I'm still not the most technical person, so I thought I'd just post my questions here.

So I know "fediverse" stands for federated universe, so does "kbin" also stand for something? I tried checking the FAQ but the about page just tells me it's a link aggregator, and google links me to a Japanese manufacturing site or those birth name meaning/ancestry sites. (can anyone tell me if lemmy also stands for something or is this just a word the developers came up with?)

Regarding defederation, does it affect previous posts? If there's a thread with comments by multiple people under different instances, does defederating break the chain?

In fact who "owns" a thread? Like, in which instance is it stored? If someone posts on kbin, and people from lemmy and beehaw comment on it, does kbin "keep" all of those stored away or do they stay in their respective instances?

And am I correct in thinking that instances who defederate essentially block off an instance, but that instance can still see their posts, but not interact? ie. Instance A defederates from B, so they can't see/interact with B, but B can still see A but not interact with them? Or is it a mutual blocking? Ergo they both can't see nor interact. I know beehaw defederated with lemmy recently, so...?

The whole concept of defederating is just so interesting to me. I know I have to read more about it but those were mostly my main questions.

Maybe I'm just not aware of how the "top" sorting is supposed to work, but it isn't making sense to me right now. I was just looking at top of 6h, and noticed some strange stuff.

  • top thread had about half the favorites as the 2nd post but a few less boosts. Both were newer than 6h.
  • a thread with only a few favorites and no boosts was just hanging out amongst posts with 50-100 favorites.

Are favorites and boosts accounted for differently in sorting? What about dislikes?

Vote for the mascot name! (media.kbin.social)

It is finally time to name the mascot! VOTE HERE I tried to include as many names as possible without getting overwhelming. If you're isn't on here, sorry for missing it.

♡⟡˙⋆ Download the image files here ⋆˙⟡♡
I provided svg and png both with and without gradient and ai files(˵ •̀ ᴗ - ˵ ) ✧

Edit: Vote on the poll for a name!

See the results here

Here is a mock of an AskKbin icon to show examples of how the kbird can be used as a sort of mascot if you'd like and a comparison between the current icon and the kbird icon

Now I'm thinking he (she?) needs a name. Some ideas I saw were: Kevin, Kebin, Binny, Ben, Binjamin.

Any more ideas? We can do a poll for this as well. I'm partial to Kevin or Binny (short for Binjamin)

First example: Four days ago I posted an article to two different c/collapse communities. If I browse each community on their instance, my posts don't show up.
Example

Second example: I posted to a community but comments on my post don't appear unless I go to their instance. When I leave a comment it also doesn't show up for them.
Example

Can anyone explain what is going on?

Hi,

How do I see a list of communities to sub to? I currently have to find them manually. In Lemmy there is an option to list them. Hope there is one here.

Thanks!

Would love to be able to collapse comments and comment trees.

When I post an image it seems to be downscaled to a much lower resolution. Is this intentional? Is there a way to access the original image? This seems like it would be a big problem for photo-focused magazines.

Hope issue with being randomly logged out gets fixed soon ...

Probably controversial opinion , but kbin should stay mascotless

Hi. Can someone give me pointers about adding custom CSS to a magazine through the magazine panel? I tried adding some CSS in the CSS field, but I didn't see any changes when I reloaded. Thanks!

VOTE HERE

I am so thankful for all the wonderful feed back I got on my last post. Now, I am back with some updated designs based on all that feedback.

What I got overall from the feedback was basically: The right one is cute, and better, but maybe a little generic, the left one has more character.

So, in this post I tried to work off the design on the right and give it more personality and flair, and I present 6 potential designs where I tried to be creative with shape design.

I also saw someone's idea about "kbinauts" aka astronauts, and I thought that was so adorable, so I tried to implement an astronaut theme on what I thought was one of the cuter designs for the Kbird (Binny?). Bring on the feedback!

Edit: #1 winning by a landslide, with #6 in second, and #4 in third

Edit 2: How about #1, #4 and #6 in the astronaut helment?

Edit 3: since this is meant to be a mascot of sorts, I made a mock logo of the AskKbin mag using #1. What do we think lol?

This may be a dumb question but how do I create a new thread in a magazine? When I click on the "+" button in the top right of Kbin, I have the options: Add new Link, Add New Article, Add New Photo, Add New Post, Add New video, Create New Magazine.

I would have thought "Add New Post" was the right choice, but that brings me here, to the microblog. How do I just create a new text only thread? I'm surprised it's this unintuitive for me, considering the entire point of this site. Is it "Add article?"

EDIT: Apparently it's "Add article" after some experimenting. Definitely doesn't seem intuitive to me, but maybe it's just me.

Hello.
How do I delete a kbin account? The option under settings seems to not work.

I've been seeing this for quite a bit, and thought it'd resolve itself once CloudFlare was taken off, but I'm still seeing it on many external communities from e.g. Lemmy. Not all posts or comments are visible from Kbin. Any idea on what's going on?

Edit, clarification: when I visit e.g., https://kbin.social/m/technology@beehaw.org the above mentioned sentence shows up, and I'm not able to see threads created even 13 hrs ago, like this one on the original instance https://beehaw.org/post/927935?scrollToComments=true. New content doesn't seem to be pushed to this instance at kbin.social. This is the issue I'm referring to.

Edit 2: This is probably the answer: https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/131241/What-s-up-with-The-magazine-from-the-federated-server-may#entry-comment-517045

If I now enter kbin.social in the address bar, I'm taken to the main page (all magazines), even if I'm logged in and have subscribed magazines set as default front page view. Is there a way to fix this? Or something planned?

Hey dear community, we just launched today our fully managed hosting service of KBIN

We offer to do Deployment / Security / SSL / DNS / SMTP / Monitoring / Alerts / Backups / Automated updates / Handle migrations / Fully automated but with Human support :)

We deploy each instance on a dedicated VM, and we provide full root access as well if you want to customize anything.

Pricing start at $10/month (billed hourly, no contract)
https://elest.io/open-source/kbin

FYI we have interest in Open source in general, not only Fediverse even if we also support Mastodon, Friendica, PeerTube, Gitea and now KBIN!

I would love to get some feedback from the community :)

This has been broken for awhile now, just wondering if there is an alternative method or some indication when it's going to be fixed?

As magazines get larger, they're going to require additional mods to help moderate them. Currently it doesn't seem possible to add anyone as any time you go to the moderator tab on a magazine, it just gives an error. I did once, for 30 seconds get a page to load, but haven't seen it since.

The upvote system is way too rudimentary to work efficiently. The upvote incite people to post to become more popular, not to post more interesting content.

One metric is not enough, the upvote system combines both "funny" and "interesting" in the same metric. Soon it's the funny content that is pushed to the top, because it's a more common characteristic. But this is how you get memes, emotional and basic screenshot of tweets to the top of the frontpage. And this is probably what you don't want.

So either we add more type of votes, for example two arrows, like an arrow "interesting" and another arrow "funny" or we get rid of them, leaving only the "report" button.

Get rid of reputation too. Some people are already chain downvoting in rage. What good do you think will happen out of a reputation score? People will just spit on you. People are emotional, don't put a gun in their hands.

"The downvote is useful to get rid of antivaxx"? You have a report button for that. And while the downvote button gets rid of antivaxx, it pushes memes to the top, destroying the platform itself. The benefit of the downvote button doesn't compensate for the flaws of the voting system.

The best way for an antivaxx to get his content visible? It is to get blocked! If he is blocked he cannot be downvoted anymore afaik. So it's all good for him. Even the block system doesn't really work as intended and has nasty side effects. Because yes, you won't see it, but other will, and they will adhere, and they will upvote and post more antivaxx stuff, and inspire more antivaxx people.

And I'm not even starting with the bots and scripting systems, which will detect who downvoted you and will "revenge downvote" for you. Do you want all your post to appear with a starting minus 5 attached to it because you posted about veganism 3 months ago? That's what you will get. All it takes is 5 people who don't like the way you talk, and a script. And all your posts will go down the drain as soon as you post them.

--> The system need either higher granularity or we need to get rid of the voting system, and keep only one button: "report", with a mandatory 60 characters comment with it. <--

Pinning what is relevant takes too much space. Do we have an alternative?

624

Is there any way to repost/ share something on different magazines?

Some people say upvoting does not have an impact on the post's or comment's ranking, only boosts do. Others say that's not correct and upvotes do the same thing like they did on reddit.

What's correct?
