Is there a way to search by tag? I can find them and then see related, but the search bar doesn't seem to consider tags independently.

kbinners?
kbinators?
kbinizens?
kbinites?
kbinitors?

Just throwing names at the wall and seeing if something sticks. Thanks.

I am used to RES allowing me to pin my favorite subs to the top bar for quick navigation. Is it possible to do this with kbin at the moment or am I stuck with a whole bunch of random mags until that feature is added?

Sorta off topic but due to KBin not hosting itself, the URLs everyone posts are so varied. There's the usual ones, Imgur gif sites discord, but some are completely random sites.

I've been privately DMing some other kbin users for a while now and I've run into a recurring issue: once the conversations and responses get lengthy, there's a hard length cap in terms of character count. Namely 5000 characters. Some of our messages end up around 20k characters in length, trying to quote and address each part of the previous message.

What ends up happening is that we then break the message into "parts". Message 5k of the message in part one, then another 5k characters in part 2, then another in part 3, etc. the message in the dm then shows up in reverse order, making it a little bit of a pain to read.

I understand the need for a length limit in public threads and in public comments; since such things are often brief (and longer threads can simply link to something like pastebin). However, in a DM you can't really rely on 3rd party site to host the text.

Is this a limit/constraint with activitypub itself? or is it uniquely kbin? If the former, could we get kbin to auto-split dm messages into multiple parts, then restitch them inside the kbin dm ui?

If you've ever had a long-form discussion on twitter, or wanted to say something more than 280 characters, you know how it is. you get (1/6), (2/6), (3/6), etc. super annoying. And for a private chat the limit seems arbitrary.

Anyone know how to see a feed of users you follow? I know how to get to my list of people I follow.

I want to check out KBin, but it literally the whole 1st page, the top 25 posts, were all from Lemmy communities.

Seems like KBin is almost just a front-end for lemmy now :(

One of the subs I used to hang out on would go to the Gangnam Style YouTube comments section each time the sub was down. I thought it might be a neat idea if we did something similar. I think this video would be an appropriate one to meet up on... but I'd love to know your thoughts.

Is PHP still a relevant language in today's day and age? I know a LOT of languages and it just never occurred to me to learn this one, because anyone I've ever been aware of writing a backend these days would either choose Node or one of several compiled languages. Lemmy uses Rust for it's backend which is highly desireable, many people would have used Golang in the backend world if they desired performance and compilation, otherwise I don't know why you wouldn't just use Typescript. Makes it hard to contribute to IMO.

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask

I decided to make a script that would hide everyone's reputation so you can navigate Kbin unbiased.

This removes it from their profile and the profile popups upon hovering usernames. Sitewide removal.

After some discussions about rep-farming and about the usefulness (or lack thereof?) and potentially harmful nature of something such as reputation/karma/whatever, I had this idea and wrote up this script.

Hope some people like it! Lmk if there are any bugs, which probably lol

Is there anything I can do, other than reporting the post, when I see a nsfw post in my feed? I have hide adult content checked, yet I still get adult content occasionally. It feels like I'm doing something wrong.

VOTE HERE

In the last poll, we had 13 names and 220 votes spread out among them.
Kibby technically did win, but it only got 53 votes of 220 due to the sheer amount of potential names.

Due to this, I decided we should have a final poll where we have the 3 finalist names compete fairly since we have eliminated the other potential names. This will give us a much more accurate poll.

Edit Found out what the problem was. Auto media preview was off under Threads on Kbin's settings.

Here was the original post:

I've posted a bunch of videos, linked to discord's cdn, and never realized that people on chrome can't play said video. Firefox has a built in one and i'm wondering if there is a way to trigger one for browsers running on chromium.
Here is a screenshot of the Firefox video player in action

Edit
When uploading the screenshot above, i noticed that even that is shown differently in chrome and Firefox

So I 3D modelled two icons (well, illustrations rather) for the communities that I created on kbin: Industrial Design and Jewelry Design. These icons are meant to reimagine kbin’s logo in a way that's relevant to each community.

Btw, as a feature request, I think it might be cool to separate the banner on a magazine's page from the mini-icon that shows up in listings. Also, inline images should be a thing, I think.

Industrial Design: icon
This icon is just an assortment of various gizmos and whatchamacallits that seemed to fit the shape. It was modelled in Rhino and rendered in Keyshot. The model uses curvature continuity, just like any self-respecting grown-up model would.

Jewelry Design: icon
This icon is designed as a hypothetically producible piece of jewelry, except that the corners — those tiny semi-spheres that hold the gems — are a tiny bit larger than usual to accommodate the icon's scale. The piece has a partially open back — a common practice in jewelry design — to allow for more light to reach the gems. That makes them look prettier both in renders and irl.

The model was created in Rhino and later welded and polished in ZBrush to make it appear closer to how it would look in real life.

Creating these was a lot of fun, so I'm open to making a few more. If you're the owner of a magazine and would like to have a similar icon, comment here to discuss it. I'll be creating these during my free time on weekends, so I probably won't be able to make more than a couple pieces a week though.

It's tough to restart a community from scratch and I was wondering what was your thought process.

A while ago, I made https://kbin.social/m/EnglishMobster to test out how magazines work. You'll notice it's the same as my username... this was back on my first day of Kbin where I thought I needed to make my own magazine to get what I wanted in my feed.

I've been content with just letting it sit and trying to forget it exists. The issue is that there's now some ambiguity about what @EnglishMobster means, since it is both my username and this accidental magazine I made. Mastodon seems to redirect to my user profile (yay!), but Calckey redirects to the magazine (not yay!).

Is there anything I can do on my end to delete the magazine, other than bugging poor @Ernest? I'm not sure if we have any other admins with the power yet...

Hello,

Does anyone know if there is any plans for a mobile app for Kbin?

It is really the only thing left for me to move to Kbin totally.

There's one or two magazines that I'm not interested that take up most of the default feed. I know I can view just the magazines I'm subscribed to in kbin.social/sub. But I also think it could be nice to see what else is active outside of my subscribed magazines.

This may be useful for folks looking to expand their feed. I discovered this on accident and it completely revolutionized my experience on Kbin.

To view all of an instance's posts, just use https://kbin.social/d/[instance domain here]

This appears to work for all Kbin instances, most Lemmy instances, and some Mastodon instances (this may have to do with their federation with kbin.social - I'm uncertain). Other platforms may work as well. Some examples:

https://kbin.social/d/lemmy.world
https://kbin.social/d/lemmy.ml
https://kbin.social/d/geddit.social

https://kbin.social/d/mastodon.social
https://kbin.social/d/hachyderm.io

Just hit the button to subscribe, and the entire instance is in your feed. It also provides a nice jumping off point to explore and subscribe to specific communities on that instance.

When you use this technique with a list like what's available from the Fediverse Observer, it really widens the reach of your feed and your ability to participate across the Fediverse.
