It's been two days since I originally posted the final name poll, votes have stopped coming in, and the winner is Kibby!

So, everyone, meet Kibby! Crafted by the community. He is ours! ❤︎

In celebration, I have created a script that changes the default/no avatar (blank) into a randomly selected variant of Kibby! And there are tons, about 25 and more to come.. Thanks for the idea, @sab!

Here is how the script looks in action (sorry for imgur's shit quality lol)

I'd like to say thank you so much to everyone who has given me their time, feedback, insight, and ideas which helped me, together with you all, develop Kibby further into his wonderful finalized version. Especially thank you to @FixedFun who's original design and idea kickstarted this entire process. This was super fun, and I am really happy with how he turned out, and I hope you all are too.

I provided svg and png both with and without gradient, a clean the Adobe Illustrator file, and all of the current Kibby variants!

Hi as the title states, I'm a newcomer coming over from reddit. So questions:

  1. Is there any way to minimize comments when viewing it in the tree form? So branches off of the top comment can be minimized?
  2. I see that NSFW thumbnails are all censored. Is there a way to take that censor off?
  3. Is there a way of searching threads within a magazine? If so, how? I don't want to ask questions that may have already been answered, or perhaps submit things that have already been submitted, etc.

Honestly, I’ve been really enjoying making these, probably the most I’ve been excited to model something for months. So I exchanged some sleep for a faster turnaround :) Previous post here

Upd: here are the links to images on transparent backgrounds for creators to use on their pages: purple and green Artemis, 3D modeling

Artemis: icon
Looking at their logo, I assumed the name was related to the hunting goddess, so this icon just had to be a quiver. It holds 7 arrows for good luck and is partially draped over to signify the app’s unfinished state, and as a nod to how the goddess herself is often depicted clothed in a flowing toga-type garment.
Cloth sim result from the back

And since the current icon uses the pride flag as its background, I figured Artemis would definitely wear a pride pin on her quiver. And besides the original color scheme I also stumbled upon a fun-looking natural colorway. Plus a similarly cosy purple version :)

Here’s the logo alone, btw. Sorry I changed it a bit, but those two thinner lines weren’t working that well for the quiver piece imo.
@hariette, what do you think?

Urban Details: icon
So this one took the most time. You have no idea how many different buildings and road arrangements I went through :)
Ghosted view of the final model

It’s meant for a community that I started which aims to celebrate various interesting details about cities, from tiny local Easter eggs to city-encompassing infrastructure projects. Just stuff that makes life either better or more fun.

The icon turned out to have some serious /fuckcars vibe, but I guess it fits well enough. I got a few interesting lighting setups while experimenting with the model, so I included a night scene as well.

3D Modeling: icon
I made a quick icon for this community the last time, but had a better idea and had to try it out. I think it encompasses the topic way better than before.
@lavender, I summon thee to check out the updated icon :)

Want one?
Again, if you’re the owner of a kbin community and would like to have a similar icon, comment here to discuss it. I’m mostly making these during my free time on weekends, so I probably won't be able to make more than a couple pieces a week in the future.

I commented below to have some of the icons displayed inline, so that you don't have to click every link. Is that more convenient? Let me know if it clutters the comments and I should delete those.

Is there any basic user’s guide to Kbin? Much of it is intuitive, obviously. I’ve been using it for a while now without major issues, figuring out what I can with some trial and error. But I’m the type who enjoys knowing the details and features of things, while also being someone who feels confused af at GitHub and Codeburg.

XSS vulnerabilities (kbin.social)
submitted 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) by tal@kbin.social to c/kbinMeta@kbin.social

It looks like lemmy is currently vulnerable to XSS attacks via submitted URLs.

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3505

Kbin appears to check for and block malicious links in my did-not-review-the-code-just-submitted-one-improper-link-in test, however:

  • I did not check to see whether kbin validates URLs coming in from federated servers or just trusts them.

  • I did not check -- and cannot, since some clients are still in production, like @hariette's Artemis -- whether clients check the URLs they are getting for XSS attacks. If they don't, and they connect directly to a malicious instance, it might feed them problematic URLs. I would guess that this may be an issue even for mature ported-from-Reddit clients, since they may trust Reddit to validate URLs but probably shouldn't trust every random instance out there.

Just wanted to help the issue get visibility among people putting together code that's intaking the URLs.

EDIT: I suppose I should qualify the above: I don't know whether a server injecting Javascript into an URL being handled by a client would properly be called an XSS attack; I don't normally deal with web development, and don't know what the risks are in handling that. Given that it slipped past the lemmy devs this long, though, and that people are now very aware that there's a hole and probably some people will start exploiting them, wanted to make sure that client devs were on the same page if there was a vulnerability there.

EDIT2: Also, to be clear, I am not the person who filed the lemmy XSS vulnerability bug.

I would like to know if I can feel safe here, or if I should pack it up and start looking elsewhere sooner rather than later.

If the kbin staff have already made there intentions clear, please let me know.

I noticed that a lot of the communities that are hosted on there only have posts from a week ago. Thought they were just a bit dead, but checked on their original instance and saw they're more lively than that it's just not showing up on Kbin.

For example I set in /m/android to see content from Fediverse that has the #android tag - something I find very useful by the way. Since it is a generic magazine it would be useful to be able to filter content for English only.
Thank you.

is Kbin.social defederated from lemmy.ml? I notice several of the lemmy.ml communities haven't been updated in a week but looking on lemmy.ml they have been updated much more recently.

For images that aren't rectangular, the update adds a softly blurred version of the image to the background. In general this looks great, I love it. However, for .png images with clear backgrounds this ruins the image. For example, here's a post I made a few days ago. Is there a way to toggle these soft backgrounds?

Otherwise I'm I'm absolutely digging this update. I immediately switched to Tokyo night, this theme is my jam.

KBin isn't showing any of my federated content from my node after this update today. Is federation broken again? It was working great yesterday

564

I'm looking for help getting my magazine more exposure on the Fediverse. When I look at it from Lemmy.world, the magazine appears blank. But it definitely isn't. Is there a certain way to get other Fediverse sites to see content there?

Does Kbin have these features for threads/posts in the desktop website? Possibly a user error and I'm just not seeing them, but any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yay kbin.social is back! No Reddit since Apollo shut down and this was the first time I had that withdrawl feeling 😂. Glad to see the visual upgrades too, site looks awesome!

Previously, thread thumbnails were full images - but after the kbin update, every single one is cropped and we are only seeing half the image.

This looks awful and is functionally a degradation of quality.

Is there any way to revert this change?

568

This new design looks so much cleaner and polished. As a huge fan of the catppuccin theme, I really enjoy the newly added Tokyo Night theme.

👏🎉💯

On Mastodon you are able to export your followers, blocklist, etc and import them to another instance in case you want to move somewhere else for whatever reason.

Are there any plans to add similar functionality to /kbin?

570

i noticed my previous avatar now replaced with the text " avatar".

Attempting to (re)set the avatar in "profile", the file select doesn't take and remains "no file selected" (no error messages issued).

571

I tried looking around for a changelog but I couldn't find one anywhere (let me know if you know where it is, I know you can look at the commits/merged PRs on Codeberg but there's a lot to dig through).

Here's some of the changes I've noticed:

  • Profile picture next to username in top right
  • Comments can now be sorted by "top"
  • Larger image preview when uploading an image
  • Magazine stats are now localized (yay!!!)
  • kbin logo instead of stormtrooper in the "Create your own instance" box
  • Vote colors are brighter on dark mode
  • New theme: Tokyo Night

This is just what I've seen after using the site for a bit after the update, let me know if there's anything I've missed!

Edit: I just noticed that you can filter posts by language now, that's huge!

572

I'm thinking about how emails ended up becoming. Where our first email addresses were so wacky, and slowly we just wanted out real names.

573

When I visit kbin on desktop it's black, but when I visit on mobile it's white. Where do I set this? I can't seem to find it anywhere in the settings.

574

More fun in playing around on the platform... I recently discovered kbin has the ability to search by tag by visiting:

https://kbin.social/tag/[your tag here]

Some examples:

https://kbin.social/tag/cat
https://kbin.social/tag/dog
https://kbin.social/tag/hamster
https://kbin.social/tag/mouse

Tags on a post you make appear in the right sidebar beneath the post stats, and are click to search.

I gotta hand it to Ernest - this is like finding Easter Eggs in a video game.

575

In the dropdown next to my username at the top right, it looks like I can filter the view of magazines by Subscribed / Moderated / Favourites / All.

How do I set a magazine to be one of my favourites?
