There used to be a button to only view posts from subscribed magazines. It was at the top with the "top", "hot", "newest" buttons. What happened to it?

When I go to search, I can search for threads, microblogs, and people, but the link to search for magazines appears to be missing today.

I stuck a service on https://kbin.world that redirects you based on a IP lookup for your country. In descending order it tries to;

  • If there is a kbin instance for your country it redirects you there (Just Poland for now!)

  • If you have a feddit instance for your country it redirects you to the most appropriate magazine on that instance, within kbin.social eg Germany

  • If you have a large national community on another Lemmy instance it redirects you there, again within kbin.social (eg Brasil)

For the ones I haven't got around to it redirects you to kbin.social homepage

It could be broken down to regions too. As more national or regional kbin instances emerge I'll replace the existing feddit/other sites.

I did a bit of testing with Pingdom and it seems to work

In the process I noticed that New Zealand and Japan feddit instances won't load for some reason. Any idea why?

Was inspired to write thread after seeing this post https://lemm.ee/post/1355047 .
I was speaking with some people in mid #redditblackout about making a hub community which aims to navigate everyone to all niche existing magazine and help out with moderation and discoverability. A magazine where only mod and moderation team of magazines subscribed under hub can promote their magazines, share experiences, giving advices with legal pitfalls.
Same idea as https://kbin.social/m/MagHub but creation of Hub would be on request to Instance owner and Joining or being kicked out will be done by Hub owner. Will try to be concise in bullet points.

  1. Search News> will show up News hub and then news magazines.
2.Allows different magazines under same name and purpose to interact with each other much easier and consolidate or diversify threads according on this interaction.
  2. Allows for more niche under niche magazines, ex Game magazine and cosplay dedicated to that game magazine, Modders only game magazine.
4.Discussions on rules, what allowed what not. Sharing ban list to prevent hitchhikers who troll and jump from magazine of same niche to other of same niche.
  3. Connect lemmy and kbin? Under one hub while under different instances. Or only kbin x with kbin y.
  4. Allows Nsfw magazines have more close interaction with Sfw, redirecting users from one to another as Sfw would more likely be more populated and stricter in rules.
  5. Allows magazines diversity on language spectrum as you will look box standard English name of the Game hub and see a magazine in your own language.

This is my intent and my driving force to use and learn Mastodon, Kbin, Misskey, Hubzilla. Have more integration between systems , consolidate while being on different instances and allows for discoverability even if federation is wonky. More interaction on same topics while not being forced to one instance magazine/community. Nurture moderation etiquette for new magazines and help with initial growth of unknown magazine. Promote niche within niche magazine while having roots and connection to main ones. Hub will be official and per request to Admin, everything under Hub are community and can join/leave/avoid depending on their stance. Allows more official sources example Minecraft official representative that was on reddit, while not to be tied to a magazine that is the biggest on Fediverse. Hub manually approve who can join, there must be system (voting? Direct addressing to instance owner?) to remove Hub owner and replace him incase of powertripping.

This is only proposal so If you like the idea or hate it you can comment accordingly. I am interested what pitfalls I don't see or understand.

Hello. I am trying out this software but I don't understand how boosts work. I see that my own boosts are shown on my profile, but when I click on Microblog, I don't see other people's boosts. Are they aggregated anywhere?

Most of the communities I'm interested in are on lemmy.world, programming.dev, etc where they have a large activity there, but the UI/UX of kbin is what's holding me here.

However, I feel like not all upvotes downvotes and even comments are federated to kbin, so I never get to experience the real hype of certain posts.

I'm wondering where the bottleneck is? Is it a certain i stance not pushibg to kbin.social, or is it kbin.social not being able to handle this huge amount of streams?

Also, if it's the latter, would I have a better experience if I were to host kbin myself?

/r/Firefox and /r/FirefoxCSS have both moved to fedia.io kbin instance.

from kbin.social I can access Firefox. But I can't access FirefoxCSS. I waited about 90 mins since first trying. Should I just wait longer or is there some other issue?

Just like the icon for images and videos, but instead of displaying inline, it opens the link in a new tab.

@MagHub

I noticed we have @findakbin which is for finding a certain magazine, but as far as I could see, there is no community for actually promoting your magazine, unless you wanted to wait around for someone to ask about your niche that is, which may never happen.

So, I made @MagHub! There is a specific format for posts outlined in the rules, but it's pretty simple and organized. Feel free to join up and promote your magazines, or others mags you feel need more support and attention.

Step 1: Install uBlock Origin on your web browser.

Firefox link / Chrome link

Step 2: Click on the uBlock Origin icon in your browser's toolbar and select the element picker (eyedropper icon).

Step 3: Move your mouse just above the words "random posts" in the Kbin sidebar so that the entire "random posts" box becomes highlighted in red. Click to make a little window appear with the text "##.section.posts" in a little text box.

Step 4: Click the blue "create" button beneath this text box to make the "random posts" section disappear. Repeat the same process with the "random threads" section, where the text box in the little corner window should read "##.section.entries".

Edit: Be aware that trying the same thing with "random magazines" and "active people" will also filter out "active users" and "related magazines" in a magazine's sidebar.

Re-enabling: To re-enable the "random posts" and "random threads" sections after blocking them with uBlock Origin, click the uBlock Origin icon and then click on "disable cosmetic filtering" (slashed eye icon). To disable the sections again, click the same icon again, which should now have a red X over it.

While I have enjoyed the random posts/threads feature as a way to find new, interesting content that I'd otherwise miss, the feature still has the obvious problem of occasionally showing pornographic, prejudiced, or even illegal content without a user's consent. There is to my knowledge no way to disable these sections through either Kbin's user settings or theme settings, which to me seems like something that should be implemented. Maybe the ideal would be a "show / hide" toggle at the top of these sections, hidden by default, with a warning that enabling these features has a small risk of exposing the user to offensive content.

I wish there was a way to import and export block lists. I share time here on kbin and lemmy. I hate it when I think I've blocked a meme or sh!tpost source just to see it on the other site. Ideally it would be cool to have a locally stored blocklist that could be updated when a new magazine (or lemmy sub) is blocked then read back in when logging in to either site.

Started sometime in the last couple of days. Using the kbin.social site in latest FireFox for Windows.

I also noticed in testing that kbinmeta/newest seems to be wonky if not broken.

What I'm getting at is you can be made a mod from other instances, but I don't see any way to perform moderator actions unless you have an account on that instance. Is there any plan to fix this? Otherwise seems more likely to push people to duplicate communities rather than join in moderating ones that happened to have become popular outside of their home instance.

Suppose I was sent a link to this video explaining the fediverse. Is there a way to open that in kbin's pwa so I'm logged in and can interact with it? If not, what would be the right URL format to view it "via kbin"?

I keep wanting to delete a post, and getting "We're currently working on resolving issues."

Comment deletion seems to work fine.

Anyone else able to delete a post?

TBH IMO NGL
(uses more spaces, is more confusing, less consistent.)

My proposal for per user content filtering by language. Please comment!

I made a little greasemonkey script to open only feed posts in a new tab by default. I remember in the past seeing some posts of people asking if this is possible so I figured I'd share it just in case anyone else would like to use it.

I usually browse under kbin.social/sub.

I noticed some posts from lemmyshitposts@lemmy.world and many others popping up in the sub-feed. The thing is, I've never subscribed to these magazines.

I even went to the magazine to check, whether I've subscribed accidentally, but I did not.

Hi all,

As best I can tell, we over at m/MMA have #1, #2, and #3 most commented threads ever on kbin and had a couple go over 400 comments.

We have a blast during our live event threads, and we're having another tomorrow starting at 7 ET. We comment live during the fights! So if you're curious about the sport or would like to learn, come on over and say hi! We have a blast and it's very interactive!

But that's not why I'm here today.

We have noticed some limitations in our live threads and wanted to see if we could get these three simple changes made and believe it would not only help us but the platform in general:

  1. We need the ability for mods to be able to sticky comments to the top of threads, regardless of sort.

  2. The ability for mods to "set suggested sort" like on Reddit, so that when someone rolls in the thread, they're automatically seeing the newest comments by default and not having to reclick it over and over and over again. This makes the threads more interactive and fun.

3. The comment box is at the bottom but the new comments are at the top when you sort by new. What ends up happening is you have to scroll all the way to the bottom to post a new comment, then all the way back up to see the new comments. This gets annoying even at 400 comments, and I can't imagine how much worse it would get once we really start getting huge engagement. We even had a user who commented under another user, who couldn't even find the top level comment box last event because scrolling to the bottom wasn't what they expected.

I feel like these small changes would help so much. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

However, when reddit crapped the bed, by comparison, the threadiverse basically didn’t have an established culture. There was a handful of lemmy instances (we were one of them), but the only one of notable size was lemmy.ml. kbin didn’t even exist in any meaningful way until a couple of months before reddit died.

So, when reddit died, there was no established culture. Instead, people brought reddit culture with them, and reddit culture, because of lax admins, was much more tolerant of hate speech than microfedi. And so, people who are “reddit people” more than “fediverse people” set up lemmy and kbin instances, and brought those reddit norms with them.

So then, you get instances like blahaj and beehaw that are threadiverse instances, but have the “old school” microfedi approach to bigotry. We smash it down hard at the first hint of seeing it, but most of the instances we federate with don’t attack it so aggressively.

How does federation of bots work? I was testing whether my bot will reply on Kbin and while I see it on the Lemmy side (https://lemmings.world/post/71345), the reply is not visible on Kbin side (https://kbin.social/m/ChatGPT/t/197430/I-created-a-ChatGPT-bot-for-Lemmy).

Or is there any other reason the response isn't visible?
