I notice on a lot of mags, there is one or two people posting, and either 0, a handful, or quite a bit of upvotes, but no one is really engaging, most the time there are 0 comments.

I think in order to foster the growth of our community, we must try to engage more with the people generating the content, it's helpful and encouraging for them, and also a positive sign for people who are coming into the fediverse. I post quite a bit, and comments always make me feel like it was worth it!

Also, keep upvoting! Someone responded to your post or comment, and you're just grateful for that or agree with them? Upvote them! Engage! That's all :)

I quite value content from targetted instances, but most of the "general" instances seem to be memes, posts on boosting lemmy, memes, reddit, memes bot posts, memes, reddit, memes, discussion on lemmy mobile applications, memes reddit, memes, and people talking about how the lemmy changed their lives oh and memes.

I would browse hot on reddit as a way to see things outside my subscribed bubble but I have given up. The signal to noise ratio is terrible.

Is anyone else experiencing this? How are you discovering magazines?

Hi kbin users. @shazbot has been working on resolving iOS issues today, and I can tell you that it now works. I'm just a user and know nothing of the scripting these people are doing. I just understand plug and play, along with various settings of apps on my phone. So, for all iOS users you can now enjoy KES settings.

Edit: Follow the directions to get Userscripts and KES here. Make sure to install Userscripts first, set its directory for storing scripts, and then when you open KES and see all the texts press the Aa and extension symbols on your safari url bar. Go to Userscripts and load that.

On Firefox, the bookmark to Kbin sends me to a page prompting me to log in. This does not happen with Brave.
When opening a thread - be it on the same tab or a new tab - it sends me to the bottom of the page instead of the top. This does not happen with Brave.

406

Currently the only official API I could find is this one. It doesn't say anything about posting and it's calling threads "entries" (I assume it was renamed before I got here).
If I want to develop an app for kbin today and I don't want to learn how to scrap the website, what API docs should I follow?

407

I've only ever used kbin so know nothing about lemmy or how things work there, but I assume this is something they need to sort out - my inability to block anyone from their instance (not had this issue with any other instances). (E: this also seems to apply to lemmy.world magazines, too)

When I try I get:

"We are working on resolving the issues

Over the next few days, there will be a change in server infrastructure. Temporary problems with the website's functionality may occur during this time."

Which is fine but it's been like a week, and while I'm sure they have bigger issues with all the attacks and I don't mind waiting, it'd be good to know someone is actually aware of the issue and that it'll be fixed at some point.

408

When reading messages on PC, if a bottom level message to a thread gets a response it shows with the green border and all, but any response to that response shows on the same level and same color as the one it is a response for, so it seems they both are responses to the bottom level message.

This makes it very difficult to make sense what message they are responding to. On the mobile browser it shows correctly with different colors and more levels than 2, so I don't understand why it's not working on PC.

It’s just a personal preference, but I rarely have a need to search for only local magazines, and I would prefer to not have to change the filter every single time.

410

I sorta hate this request as it seems invasive but I was thinking about folks in the future and even myself now and I was thinking I would love to see what folks that I have subscribed to have blocked. I don't subscribe to a person unless Im really impressed by what they post or their discourse so its like a trusted list of users for me. That made me think I would love to see how they have blocked so I could look at it and see if it looks like an obvious person or place I would want to block.

Is it possible to have RSS content automatically post to a kbin magazine? If so, how?

There's a post I'm viewing on the larger lemmy-verse that's failing some basic markdown formatting. I know nothing about the history, but searching didn't really give an answer (Not that I'm much good searching the fediverse), but I'd be happy to help update/add to the formatting system if I knew where it was :D The source of the thread is from here on a link to selfhosted@lemmy.world, and in-thread I've posted screenshots of how I see it...

This has been happening for a few day, maybe a week?
Pretty minor annoyance, no rush or anything.

Going straight to the point: I was wondering what is the criteria for kbin to pick federated magazines (number of subscribers maybe?) and if there is a way or workaround to pull/force them into the "All magazines" list.

For example, I am interested in https://feddit.it/c/teoriamusicale, which would translate into kbin's URL https://kbin.social/m/teoriamusicale@feddit.it. It has been created weeks ago and probably it hasn't been picked because of lack of content. I would like to contribute to it without having to create a feddit account (I'm quite attached to my kbin one).

I'm sure many of us here had/have the same issue - how did you work around it?

EDIT: and now it's there!... Miracles (or @ernest's kind intervention) :)
Anyway I think my point still stands, I guess.

Edit: I've found an issue for it on Codeberg

I've run into a problem I'm not sure if I can solve or if it's an issue with kbin. I'm trying to make custom CSS for my magazine and as part of it I'm attempting to target a link. I'm very new to this, but I've figured out that you need to do this with something like [href="link goes here"].

This works in Firefox's style editor to do what I want, but not when I apply it to my magazine in kbin. I took a look at the CSS being sent to the browser in the style editor, but what kbin ends up sending instead of what I wrote is [href="link goes here"].

This doesn't seem to target the link anymore and is breaking the CSS. Is there anything I can do to fix this or is this possibly a bug with kbin?

This Stack Overflow thread is the closest thing I could find to an answer on my own.

I would like to suggest that developers consider as much flexibility when trying to interact with links/handles from off-instance and off-kbin (e.g. lemmy) as possible. I would like for it to work on lemmy in a similar fashion.

I think that the various "incorrect" ways of doing things should work as redirects assuming this would not cause a technical problem. It could even explain the correct way of doing things if you'd like to discourage it.

Non exhaustive examples:

communities

as an example: https://lemmy.ca/c/wowthislemmyexists

search kbin.social for https://lemmy.ca/c/wowthislemmyexists - finds occasions where people have mentioned the URL in comment/post

Most lemmy instances suggest searching for a group in a way that doesn't work:

search kbin.social for
for [!wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca](/c/wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca) - finds occasions where people have mentioned the handle in comment/post

you need to replace ! with @ to find it:

search kbin.social for
for @wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca - works as expected

So the kbin.social URL is https://kbin.social/m/wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca

But what about variations a person could try based on principals of how things work e
lsewhere:

https://kbin.social/m/@wowthislemmyexists@lemmy.ca

even allowing use of the /c/ instead of the /m/?

profiles

profiles have similar inconsistencies.

I can view this off-instance profile on kbin.social: https://kbin.social/u/@btschumy@mas.to

but if I try to drop my own username into the same structure, it doesn't work: https://kbin.social/u/@density@kbin.social

The only way to see my profile is (I think) https://kbin.social/u/density

Hope this all is intelligible.

At the moment the server owner effectively 'owns' magazines & communities. Is that the right balance of power? What happens when servers go offline, or server admins go rogue?

In a world where both users and magazines had public and private keys and magazine moderators had the tools to do off-site backups.

Could the magazine moderator then do an unassisted migration to a new place?

They revoke the key that gives the original server the right to host the magazine. They use the key to re-create it on a new server.

Somehow notify all the members the magazine of the new location. The users use their public keys to reclaim their identities and content.

Would that give mods too much power?

It all gets complicated fairly quickly! I think the Bluesky AT protocol is somewhat close to this model for user content, but doesn't really extend to 'community' scale content.

It falls short of a full confederal protocol

Hopefully everyone in the northern hemisphere is having an eventful summer. Stay cool!

I've updated Kbin.cafe to the latest development code today; it appears that some users may have been logged out as a result. If you were, this is why.

We're currently hovering at 99 users on this instance, which is a relatively small number but leaves us on the verge of an incredible milestone that I certainly could have never expected. I'm happy that every single one of you can call this place your threadiverse home! Please continue enjoying the content, posting, voting, and invite your friends. Part of the ethis of this community is to carry the spirit of the fediverse forward, helping to ensure everyone doesn't congregate on Kbin.social, so the more active users the better.

This said, I have a rough roadmap of updates that will be rolling out over the next week:

  • Add links to Discord, Matrix, and our status page either on the about page or somewhere in the navigation.
  • Update privacy policy and terms of service. Nothing too big here, just changes to writing style and additional clarification.
  • Outline the ongoing cost for the Kbin Cafe server in the FAQ.
  • While Kbin Cafe will always remain free, I need to find a way to accept donations and link it up to the website. A couple of you have reached out asking about avenues to do so, so stay tuned for that!

Here's to another 100 users.

kbin's API is coming soon! I've finished up all of the endpoints required for a useful API, so it will enter review soon! The PR is here

This will allow apps like @artemisapp to interact more effectively with kbin!

I am looking for a quick guide or crash course for kbin's microblog feature. I am looking for:

  • Do I follow mags? How?
  • Do I follow people? How?
  • My feed includes all sorts of items not just who and what I follow. Why?
  • When I post, where does it go? Who can see it?
  • Where do boosts go? I would think they would get posted to my feed when I boosts something.
  • and anything else because I don't know what I don't know.

Thanks!

Original 1.0.0 release post here

Thanks to your detailed bug reports and the tireless efforts of our contributors, KES has undergone significant stability changes and has been upgraded with a more robust API framework to support the different flavors of GreaseMonkey, TamperMonkey, ViolentMonkey, etc.

If you had tried the previous version but could not get it working on GreaseMonkey/iOS, now is the time to try again.

In addition, this version brings a host of usability improvements, as well as a few new mods. Notably, this includes the Notifications Panel by @blobcat, which was highly asked for.

With this stability brush-up, this release paves the way for a stable foundation we can start adding many more mods to. If there is one you would like to see included, feel to drop a request here.

Notable feature additions:

  • Notifier on wrench icon if updates to KES are available
  • Transparent Mode: click the icon to see behind the KES menu and check changes on the page; click again to return
  • Reset button: clear all saved KES settings and reset
  • Clipboard button: copy system information to clipboard (used when submitting bug reports)
  • Notifications Panel (@blobcat): adds a navbar bell icon that opens notifications in an iframe
  • Bug-report-from-post: post contents of a message directly to the KES bug tracker
  • Display total number of add-ons enabled in header

Existing users:
The latest release is available through the install update button on KES, or through your extension manager.

New users:
The latest release is available here.
If you are a new user, see the docs for additional information and usage guides.

Mod authors:
This release ships with safeGM(), a shim which handles cross compatibility between the different GM APIs.
You can call this shim by passing it standard GM_ or GM. (4.0) commands without the prefix and pass the usual arguments.
A detailed explanation of this and other new utility functions is available here

There is also better support for fields like reset buttons, ranges (sliders), and number inputs. Now you can prompt users for a numerical input or tweak the value of a setting, or revert them to their initial values.

A total rewrite of the documentation now includes integration examples, sample code, and discussion of how KES handles
mutation observer events for you. This should make it even easier than before to port your scripts.

If you would like to contribute more actively to the development of KES, be it through testing, graphics, administrative issues, or code contributions, please feel free to reach out.

It seems weird that after I make a comment or a post, it has 0 upvote and I'm able to upvote it.

Can we add support for automatically upvoting your own comments and posts?

See the quick inspect-element mockup I put together for an example. I'm bad at design, but I think it gets the point across. Current implementation on left, suggested on right. Also, I'm using Kbin Enhancement Suite for the modifications to instance names, but I think they are even more useful for this demonstration.

How it could work: If the same link is submitted across multiple communities in your current view (subscribed, favorites, all, etc) within a certain time period (probably 24 hours), then have them automatically group themselves into the same box, along with a brief list of the duplicate threads and instances. Use whichever of the threads has the highest score as the one to fill the title and thumbnail for the grouped thread.

I didn't make a mockup for this, but when clicking the thread, it could then import the comments from each of the grouped instances. Options on the sidebar could show you each of the instances whose comments are being shown on that page, along with an option to filter them out of your current feed, and options to add your votes to each instance's thread.

EDIT: To add, as I'm seeing some confusion in the comments: I'm envisioning this as a strictly user-side bundling of threads. This would only bundle threads as they are displayed to the user in their own feed based on communities you're subscribed to. So if the same link were to be posted to 5 different communities you subscribe to, when you view the feed, you'll see those 5 links all bundled together. Though perhaps an option could also include seeing non-subscribed duplicates, as well.
