Not sure if this is a bug, but upvotes "randomly" error out?

Occasionally when I upvote a "front-page" post or sometimes even an individual comment it will redirect to an empty page that just says "error". (It's in the kbin CSS format, it's not, like, literally blank). However even after that other posts / comments will upvote without error.

I thought it was related to a login token or something, and logging out and back in seems to re-set but not completely fix the problem. It will recur at some point. Re-loading the page doesn't seem to help.

I'm using various OS setups but always through Firefox, fwiw, but as far as I know no plug-ins should be causing what seems like random errors.

Sorry if this isn't the right thread, I couldn't find "kbinsupport" or "askkbin".

Hi, in this and probably the next week, I will be working on these tasks:

Today, I will be slightly less available as I am in the final stages of taking care of all the formalities, and I also had to handle a few personal matters. Starting tomorrow, I will be back at full capacity again. When this succeeds, in the next releases, I will focus more on frontend and accessibility.

Howdy,

For awhile now (possibly even since I started using kbin in June) I've run into an issue where if I stay on a page for too long and then try and upvote something,I instead get taken to an error page. If I then go back to the page I was just on, refresh the page, and then upvote the comment/post it'll usually work. Sometimes the error shows up after staying on the page for 10+ minutes, sometimes it can happen after being there for just a minute.

Is this a known bug? It happens to me on both mobile and PC (both using Firefox).

I've seen several posts lately of people complaining about porn showing up in their feeds and the posters say that they don't want to block all nsfw posts because they follow other things, like news from the war in Ukraine, that gets tagged nsfw because of graphic imagery. I think they have a reasonable complaint and that the best solution is to separate the two types of content such that porn is tagged as nsfw (not safe for work) and graphic images/gore/non-sexual nudity ect are tagged nsfl (not safe for life). It may not be entirely fair to label non-sexual nudity, medical posts, and I'm sure many other categories that aren't jumping to mind right now as not safe for life but nsfl is an already established and generally recognized tag and I don't think there's any real advantage to having more than two tags.

I only get notifications when somone DMs me, but when I make a post and people upvote/comment on it, I get no notification whatsoever.

My settings are default and I haven't changed much, so it's as it would have been when I first created an account, hence I don't believe I disabled anything either.

If it's not a me issue, then @ernest please do consider making this an important issue to be addressed, and the reason I say that is because it makes Kbin look dead to me, because when I don't get notified, people would have still conversed with me through my threads on the comments, and also when I don't get notified about upvotes apart from comments, I don't even know my post got that much traction unless I manually check it every time.

That being said I know the developer is very busy with Kbin, it's certainly a feat to create an all-in-one Lemmy and Mastodon alternative with a codebase built from scratch with activitypub compatibility.

So I do understand Kbin is in early development phase and this may already be planned (if yes, great), but even if it is or not, do make this a priority as without proper notifications, whenever I check back Kbin it looks too quiet (especially when it comes to the content I posted).

Edit: Okay sorry for the confusion. Upvotes do get notifications, even on Reddit but not for every upvote, for example if a post gets upvotes to 10, 50, 100, Reddit notifies you. That is what I mean't, not every upvote.

Thank you!

What do badges do? (kbin.social)

I have no idea what this field is for. I thought it might my like reddit flairs, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Just wondering if there is a place to see total subscriber numbers for a specific magazine, from both kbin users and lemmy users combined?

Lemmy has this site: https://lemmyverse.net/

but it doesn't show kbin magazines on here obviously. Does Kbin have anything similar?

I have been trying to support our Kbin instance here on Patreon where I usually Paypal. I have other people I support though Patreon using Paypal, but paypal fails consistently for Kbin. Does anyone know of a reason why that would be?

Thanks

Title, pretty much.

Im getting lots of NSFW content in the last time. I didnt find anything to disable the media preview in the sidebar either so there is no way to use the site in a setting where someone might see my screen. Anyone got a tipp or ways to change that?

How’s everyone else’s first month on the fediverse going?

I currently moderate communities like m/AskKbin and I would like to know if there is anyway using CSS, I can make my community look more like old reddit or more compact, so the user don't have to install a theme on their own and automatically see this style whenever they come to communities I moderate on Kbin.

If anyone can shed some light on this, I will edit and add the CSS instructions on this post so other mods can use it on their communities/magazines too.

BTW the reason I am asking this is because I have 0 knowledge when it comes to CSS.

You can also use the map feature of fediverse.observer to pick your new kbin instance.

As the title says I've noticed that in the past day kBin often freezes up when I view a thread (Firefox pops up asking me if I want to stop the tab or not). I use Firefox on EndeavourOS but I didn't have any problems with it for the past 2 weeks.

Is anyone else encountering this/is it a new bug?

I see that is copies a shortened version of the link to your clipboard. For example this link:

https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/177112/kbin-project-management-costs-financing-future-plans

is copied as:

https://kbin.social/m/kbinMeta/t/177112

Is that all it does?

Hi. Is it possible to embed a few pictures in a thread? Currently I can only post a picture as a cover and links that allow to open pictures in the thread.

I am not sure what is correct to put in kbin-core/issues without cluttering it up with somewhat speculative requests. I have no idea how to implement this or whether it is possible. So I will post here?

This is a response to issue
#635 - Editor support for autocompletion when a user types /m/, /c/, /u/, or @

@garrettw said:

After all of this I'm left with the distinct impression that a standardized link format is needed across the fediverse for any fediverse content.

I keep wishing for UUIDs or hashes or an internal link shortener or permalink something.

These are the same post on different instances:

It would be nice if it would have a unique ID like e3d14d6c-28d7-11ee-be56-0242ac120002 across the *verse. I can't be the first person to think of this right? Why is ity either not a good idea, or not a viable idea?

I imagine 2 variations. I am not attached to any of the particulars... Just spitballing. What do you think?

  1. /local/uuid

/local/e3d14d6c-28d7-11ee-be56-0242ac120002 - this link would bring the user to the post on the instance where you are viewing it.

So if someone writes in a comment:

check out [this post](/local/e3d14d6c-28d7-11ee-be56-0242ac120002)!

and you are viewing it on beehaw, it renders like this:

<p>check out <a href="https://beehaw.org/post/6759290">this post</a>!</p>

if you are viewing it on kbin.social, it renders like this:

<p>check out <a href="https://kbin.social/m/firefox@fedia.io/t/237162">this post</a>!</p>

  1. /orig/uuid

On the other hand we need a way to link to the particular item as it appears "originally". To do this, you could write:

check out [this post](/orig/e3d14d6c-28d7-11ee-be56-0242ac120002)!

And irrespective of where you are looking at it, it will render like this:

<p>check out <a href="https://fedia.io/m/firefox/t/132144">this post</a>!</p>

I am not 100% sure if the correct behaviour for this is to link to the community home instance or the poster's home instance? I went with community home but maybe there is argument for the other way, or for both.

Is there a general guide to using Kbin?

If so please share the link here, thanks! (And sorry if it's something obvious. I honestly tried searching for answers to my specific questions and the results were not helpful.)

Basically the title, on occasion I'll boost a post and I'll get redirected to an error page. Does anyone else know what could be causing this?

396

((Figured this belonged in here, not sure why this place isn't showing up as an option for new posts))

My Kbin rambling thoughts...

Ok, thought it was time to post this.

I've been running a testing group over at fedia.io so I could see if'n Kbin was for me, and I'm really happy, definitely prefer it over Lemmy.

Inline images work fine, I host images on IMGBB, and they give you cut and paste code for images, all I had to do was switch to HTML instead of BBCode, and Bob's your uncle, unlike Lemmy and it's markup language where I'd have to code in the images m'self.
Not sure how well it works with Mastodon, I did test follow one of my Mastodons, but considering how often Fedia throws up 500 errors, along with the fact that there doesn't seem to be a way to view only subscribed microblogs, I've been unable to test this
Links parse and thumbnail fine, no work on my part.

So, why does this matter? Well, right now I have my own Mastodon instance, and it looks like Kbin will make a very good replacement for that, from the memes and short content that I post to my personal account to the link sharing on Taurnation which can now become a community, this will definitely be a better fit. It might also replace my Friendica, as long content like this works fine too. Just have to wait for iKnox to start offering Kbin, I've already volunteered to be a guinea pig.

So, what would make it perfect?
An RSS reader, Friendica has this, and I find it great to be able to subscribe to news and comics just like following anyone else on the Fediverse.

Yep, that's the only feature I need for this to be the perfect replacement for everything I'm doing.

/kbin has been getting some great updates lately (e.g., improved magazine search, translation improvements, backend stuff that I'm too stupid to understand). But this all has me wondering: when might we see a list of subscribed magazines?

Of course, there are a few userscripts that add subscriptions panels, and tmk frontend stuff isn't particularly high priority. Even so, a built-in subscriptions list would lower the barrier to entry for a lot of people. Is it something that might be added soon, or it will be a long while?

@ernest If you don't mind, I'd like your input on this

398

I am working on Russian translation of Kbin right now and I noticeed that many of Kbin terminology just sounds.. Like a bad translation (Maybe from Polish it was originally written on?..), and I am sure many of you can agree with me
So there are some of my suggestions of better names for things to make them more intuitive, espicially for new people and normies:

Magazine - Community
Link - Article
Thread - Post
Post(In microblog) - Blog
Commented - Discussed
Badges - Labels

If you have more suggestions write them in comments, I think kbin can be confusing as it is, and the wierd language makes it even more confusing for everyone

What does blocking on kbin actually do? I’m asking because it seems incomplete, to put it mildly. If you block someone, they can still see what you post and reply to you and you’re still sent notifications of their replies, even though you can’t see the comment itself (or any replies other people make to comments of an account you blocked). Plus, I blocked someone who was spent the last day downvoting literally every comment and post I make, and they’re still able to see and downvote my replies and posts. So what exactly is the point of blocking, if it doesn’t actually block people? Is this something that’s going to be fixed in the future?

EDIT: Oh, hey, the irony, the person I blocked was able to see and downvote this post. Which just proves my point, I suppose - block is either busted or what it actually is for needs a lot of clarification.
