I discovered feishin today on Github. It's made by the creator of sonixd, another great jellyfin/subsonic desktop client.

Works super smooth. Feels basically like Spotify desktop, but FOSS.

The only missing feature for me is the ability to cache songs for offline playback.

Hello all!

I run a jellyfin server on an old laptop. I want to cast media from my Android phone (jellyfin app) to my Chromecast. For this, I will also need subtitles because anime.

So far I have been using VLC as an external player but casting with subtitles is not supported. Switching to exo player / web player also seems to not allow for subtitles or at least it makes the media run poorly (blocky, needs to buffer, ...)

Anyone managed to get subtitles to their Chromecast? Learning Japanese sadly would take to long haha

I am currently just using my hdhomerun though kodi and I didn't know if here was a reason I should pass it to jellyfin

I've seen the trailer plugin but it basically just links and plays the content remotely. I'd like to have it natively, is that possible?

Don't get too excited though, it's literally just changed the targetSdk value from 32 to 33 to comply with Google's Store requirements: https://github.com/jellyfin/jellyfin-android/pull/1162

For people asking for a way to run 2fa on jellyfin i have a solution. I will elaborate more if people are interested as not writing a guide for no reason. This method allows users to simply use their login credentials into the default jellyfin login page, and 1 second later your DUO app on your phone will buzz for a confirmation to sign-in. (meaning no redirects and this method 100% compatible with all clients)

install the LDAP plugin on jellyfin. install Authentik in your server with docker. create a DUO security account. in short, jellyfin query's your Authentik LDAP server for ther user login, then LDAP will query DUO.

Unfortunately, DUO only allows 10 users with the free account, then you have to pay extra. of course with this method you are not bound to only use DUO, you could you a web-auth with your phones bio-metrics to sign-in instead of DUO. there are many ways you could query the users phone through Authentik, but DUO is the most continent.

I can't find the plugin installation button. I remember being able to change the repository as well.

I'm logged in with the administrator. Jellyfin is installed via docker compose and the latest version.

Any advice on this?

I'm running both plex and jellyfin on the same server with same media and same tv box. My hardware setup is ok, I have surround audio with plex on my avr via toslink. I'm trying to transition to jellyfin but I need to iron these out. Audio in jellyfin is stereo only. In my jellyfin server I have audio set to max 5.1 channels, on the android tv app the audio is set to direct. When I start a movie with plex the avr receives signal and switches to dolby digital or dts mode. When I start playback with jellyfin with the same media the avr switches to stereo. I cannot find any other settings to tweak. Please let me know what am I missing.

hello,

I'm interested in setting up a jellyfin server that will only serve streams to TVs on my LAN. Files will be on an existing NAS. Usage will be low (probably just one stream at a time); cheap and reliable is the name of the game, and cheap includes power consumption. I am thinking of some kind of NUC but don't know enough about jellyfin yet to decide on specs. Any recommendations for a specific NUC model or CPU/GPU? I assume I will be running linux - any distro recommendations?

I'm reencoding some videos on my PC and when the mkv is played on the Roku client all the red color is pushed to max, while the other color channels are ok. Playing the clip on another client is working as expected. It is direct playing, but i noticed all the codec information is missing from the codec info screen on the roku (up button while playing ) .

Has anyone experienced this? Maybe some meta data is missing on rhe file? Not sure... I can supply some clips.

Hi! While looking for an answer I stumbled upon this old reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/107e03d/gt_710_vs_ryzen_7_3700x/

I unfortunately do not know how to interpret the information provided by nyanmisaka there.

Does "GT 710 doesn't support NVENC" mean that adding the older GPU wouldn't do anything to provide a performance boost to the server? Or only for videos encoded in a specific way? I.e. is there any point in keeping my passively-cooled GT710 in my server or should I just ditch it?

So, I host some songs on my jellyfin server, When I reproduce them on my android phone with the screen on the music is fine, no problem at all, but when the screen turns off or when I press the button to turn it off, the music sounds all corrupted, when I power the screen back on the music sounds fine, any solutions?

Hi guys! How do you sort this series so it shows properly on Jellyfin? It's a bit messy on my system. If I leave it as Sonarr downloads it, as in: The Haunting -Season 1 -Season 2

Then Jellyfin will show episodes of second season as if they're all part of Season 1, just duplicated. Of course if you play them you will watch the second season episodes, but they're in the order as in S01E01 (shows as such), S02E01 (shows again as S01E01), S01E02 (correct), S02E02 (showing as S01E01)...and so on.

I just tried renaming them as: -The Haunting on Hill House -The Haunting on Bly Manor This fixes the S01, as it shows everything as it should (well, in the subfolder Season 1 on Jellyfin, but that's fair I guess). However for Bly Manor it reads it as if it's again episodes of the Hill House. What am I doing wrong, and how can I sort this mess? Ideally in a manner that Sonarr also catches it, so it won't try to re-download everything if I don't pay attention, as this second method doesn't seem to agree with Sonarr (as it's expecting everything under the same single folder).

Thanks!

I've been trying to setup Jellyfin from the docker container, but I can't get it to work. Whenever access it it only shows me a single movie on the frontpage. If I enter the library it also shows me only one movie. When I click on one of the characters in the library it shows me a single movie starting with that character. When I try to search for a movie it only ever shows me a single match (like only showing a single Batman movie despite multiple ones being in the library).

And according to the metadata it has found all the movies, though all fields apart from title and year are empty (though the year in brackets is also added to the name)

I have had Radarr organize the movie files according to the recommended setup

And the owner of the movies is the user which is set in the docker-compose file and I even did a chmod -R 777 * just to make sure. The same problem appears when I access from behind my traefik reverse proxy or when I access it directly. It also happens with both the official docker image and the one from linuxserver.io.

This here is the relevant part of the docker-compose.yml:

Getting GPU acceleration working is a common task for those of us running Plex or Jellyfin. There is not much documentation for getting the NVIDIA container stack to work with Podman, even less on Gentoo, plus there have been a lot of changes to NVIDIA's container toolkit lately.

I have been fighting with Podman for a while now and just recently got it working 1:1 with my Docker setup. Gentoo may not be the most popular or easy to use distro but I documented it in case some poor soul runs across it searching the web.

Feel free to poke holes in it or leave feedback.

Hi! I have set up my Jellyfin with NFS Shares from another Server. Jellyfin is able to acces those paths since it I saw it writing .nfo files in the directories of the episodes and Movies.

The movies and series are recognised correctly, but when I open said movies or series, i cant see the episodes and i am unable to start playing them.

It was able to find all epsidoes of like two series. When you open one of those two, you are able to see the episodes but cant play them. If you do, an error about unsupported formats pops up.

ffmpeg is installed in the directory that jellyfin expects it, so i dont have any idea why this is also failing.

Does this sound familiar to any of you fellas? If so, could you give me a hint or a link that helps me with this anomaly? Thx in advance!

I was having some dropped frame issues on my PC, and my phones video is pretty much unusable so I figured its probably a lack of hardware acceleration. Is it worth it to buy an Intel A380 which I've found for $120, or is it not worth it? For reference I currently have an i5 8600k and 16gb of RAM running Ubuntu Server headlessly.

I have been using Jellyfin on Android and Windows viewing DVD movies that were converted with Handbrake into M4V files in H.265 format. The foreign subtitles and closed captions have always been embedded and passed through by handbrake, and I've never had any issues playing the subtitles over th years with VLC/KODI/Plex etc. Even On Windows or android Jellyfin clients I've had no issues. My parents only use Roku however, and the only way I've been able to get the subtitles working for them is by creating a separate .srt file in the folder that has the video. I've tried .ass files using subtitle edit program without success. Do I need to reencode all my movies with subtitles and extract them as srt files for them to work on Roku? Or is there a better way to to get them working on Jellyfin Roku? Also, is there a format other than srt that is compatible with Jellyfin Roku?

I've been a long time jellyfin user but I haven't been able to ditch plex completely because of this problem. On my linux system with nvidia, with hardware decoding enabled/off/copy or with any of the codecs, I get this weird color bands in video when I use JMP. It doesn't happen with the plex app or when directly using mpv with the jellyfin-mpv ship. I have identical mpv config files for mpv for JMP and my system, with vanilla mpv having no issues.

I am at my wits end regarding what might be causing this and I end up using the plex app even though I hate the interface.

As the title says really. I am using Jellyfin on a windows laptop and Firefox as my default browser.

When I try to get my media to stream to my chromecast dongle it keeps showing as Google cast unsupported. I know there is no problem with the laptop or the dongle, as using plex I am able to stream fine. I don't seem to be able to find any info online how to do this, can someone help clear this up for me please

I'm pretty thy a newbie when it comes to networking and stuff, but was wondering if it's possible to run jellyfin as a server on my shield. A bit fed up looking at plex and wondering what alternatives I have. Does anyone have any good suggestions?

Edit: thanks all for the replies and suggestions.

Downloaded the .dmg file for latest Mac build (installer/jellyfin_10.8.10.dmg) from the website and installed it.

Launching the app doesn't do anything. Is there something I'm doing wrong? Are M1 Macs not supported? Thanks for any help.

(I browsed the forum but couldn't find any Mac discussion. I tried a search for "Mac", but the term is too short to allow search for some reason.)

I've got an old AMD Phenom II system in a 2U rackmount case that I want to run Jellyfin on. I need to add a graphics card so I can hook a monitor to it for troubleshooting etc., so I figure while I'm at it I ought to find something I can pass through for hardware-accelerated transcoding.

I use Linux and I prefer open-source drivers, so I've initially limited my consideration to AMD. Based on this page in the Jellyfin documentation, it sounds like I need GCN 5 (Vega) or newer for acceleration on Linux with the open-source driver, or GCN 1 or newer for acceleration on Windows with a closed source driver (not sure if that includes Windows in a VM on Proxmox?).

Needing a low-profile card really limits my options. Looking at Ebay etc., the ones with decent availability include:

  • FirePro W2100 (GCN 1) (~$12)
  • Radeon R5 430 (GCN 1) (~$12)
  • Radeon R7 450 (GCN 1) (~$30)
  • Radeon Pro WX 2100 (GCN 4) (~$35)
  • Radeon RX 550 (GCN 4) (~$45)
  • Radeon Pro WX 4100 (GCN 4) (~$70)
  • Radeon RX 6400 (RDNA 2) (~$130)

Then I noticed a caution on the Jellyfin documentation page:

Most AMD dGPUs come with video encoders but be careful with certain models - RX 6400/6500 series don't have video encoders.

So that eliminates the only GCN 5+ low-profile card that AMD has apparently ever made, which means there is no such thing as a low-profile AMD card that both supports VA-API and has a video encoder? Is that really true that AMD went the five years between the WX 2100 in 2017 and the RX 6400 in 2022 without releasing a single low-profile card suitable for Jellyfin??

As for Nvidia, I'm starting from scratch because I haven't bought an Nvidia card in probably 20+ years. According to the Nvidia Jellyfin documentation, apparently transcoding requires the proprietary driver and a card that's Maxwell (1st gen) or better, HEVC requires Maxwell (2nd gen) or Pascal depending on bit depth, and AV1 requires really new stuff that's probably out of my budget.

Nvidia low-profile cards AFAIK include:

  • Quadro K620 (~$25)
  • Quadro K1200 (~$40)
  • Quadro P400 (~$50)
  • Quadro P600 (~$60)
  • GT 1030 (~$70)
  • GTX 750 (~$100)
  • GTX 1050 Ti (~$100)
  • Quadro P1000 (~$150)
  • T400 (~$160)
  • GTX 1650 (~$200)
  • RTX A2000 (~$300)

TLDR: so it seems like my options are basically to get an AMD FirePro W2100 or Radeon R5 430 for $12 and resort to running Jellyfin in a Windows VM, to get a Quadro K620 for $25 and resort to using the proprietary Nvidia driver, spend way more than it's worth for anything that can do HEVC (let alone AV1), or scrap the whole CPU/mobo/RAM and upgrade to something with modern integrated graphics?
