Hytale is a sandbox voxel game inspired by Minecraft and is made by Hypixel Studios, who are also the creators of the famous Hypixel Minecraft Server. It has been announced in 2018 and it’s said that it will come out in 2021, you can watch the trailer in the mean time.

Voxel sandboxes like Minecraft and Hytale have player creativity firmly in the spotlight from the jump—not just because you can make whatever you like out of cubes, but also because modding is such a prominent part of the scene. Modders have had a field day with Hytale so far to say the least, and developer Hypixel is stoking the flames of their creativity further with a modding contest.

Hypixel Studios continue building up Hytale during Early Access with Patch 3 out now that adds in a ridiculous amount of additions to the game.

In the announcement they mentioned a stable update will release every "2 to 6 weeks" along with weekly pre-release builds for testing. On top of that they plan to make bigger "chapters" as larger content drops, and to help with it they've been growing the team with multiple hires coming straight from the modding community. Considering how good early sales have been, we're set for a lot of updates.

I recently was experimenting with rolling and found a new start to go fast:

  1. You launcher yourself with the dagger preferably as high as you can
  2. You switch to a different hotbar slot
  3. You hold crouch so when you land you roll
  4. You either stay rolling OR you can jump and use the dagger again as soon as you get enough stamina back (only jump when you have enough) Strat 2: you can keep rolling up or down elavation by jumping while rolling!

It's been just over a week since launch, and Hytale already has its second major update on the way, uncreatively named Update 2. Unflattering name aside, this is a very hearty patch whipped up less than two weeks after launch, and the team isn't slowing down yet, as Hypixel CEO Simon Collins-Laflamme says, "Update 3 is already in the works".

While Hytale started as a Minecraft mod, it's an original game with a similar block-building sandbox vibe. It finally launched last week without Steam support, and already, a 15-year-old modder named iamcxv7 has pulled off something incredible, getting Minecraft and Hytale to work together, almost like they were designed to be compatible from the start.

You can see footage of a Minecraft player and a Hytale player in the same world together, interacting with each other while the time of day and text chat stay synced between them:

Modders have already showcased some stunning achievements in Hytale, the hot new sandbox RPG that hit Early Access last Tuesday. Our headline singles out engineer Sadat Sahib (AKA iamcxv7), who has managed to get Windows 95 to run inside the new game. The Hytale experience and extensive creator toolset have led to some pundits describing it as Minecraft 2.0.

It has been a long road for Hytale but the sandbox exploration RPG is now officially out in Early Access, with Native Linux support. Giving you a procedurally generated world full of dungeons, secrets, and a variety of creatures that you can shape block by block. Like a mixture of Minecraft with a proper RPG, it's an interesting mixture but very early days for it.

The Linux version as they previously announced comes as a Flatpak, which has its own launcher that will download and apply updates for you.

A fresh update on the upcoming game Hytale which will no doubt be quite popular, and it will have what they now say is "experimental" Linux support.

I've covered the game a few times recently, since it moved from being under Riot Games to being cancelled and then revived as an indie game again and they did previously confirm Linux support for it.

With the first release of Hytale finally approaching, the developers are still working through getting it running on Linux and macOS. As covered on GamingOnLinux previously, the developers did confirm they were working on both versions officially now.

At least now we know how you'll be getting it, with the developer doing it via a Flatpak which means you should be able to install it across many different distributions.

With the revival of Hytale ongoing towards an Early Access release in January, we now have it confirmed that it will be coming officially to Linux and macOS.

Previously it was a case of them being "attempted" but a new blog post today gives us a much more firm statement with the developers saying "We are actively working to bring Hytale to Linux and Mac as soon as possible". That's great to see - official support! Hopefully it goes well.

As for the Steam Deck they said they don't have the ability to test it right now, and it won't be coming to Steam until "we determine our ability to comply with Steam's policies". Thankfully for the Steam Deck and other SteamOS machines, running third-party stores and software is quite easy as a bunch of our guides will show you.

After being cancelled by Riot Games and revived as an indie game again, Hytale is now set for an Early Access launch in January 2026. Pre-purchasing will open December 13th, with it going live January 13th.

No doubt many are excited about this since it had a lot of followers watching it in previous years, thanks to its blend of a sort-of Minecraft style but more of a proper RPG. So a bit like Minecraft and Skyrim combined you might say.

A new and exciting chapter for Hytale begins today.

We are thrilled to announce that we have acquired Hytale from Riot Games. While it didn't make sense for them to continue developing it in its existing form, they ultimately wanted what's best for players, and that's for us to eventually play a revised version of the game. We are grateful to Riot Games for making this possible. ...
