If you are also a parent, you may well have found yourself in the situation where you tell your kid that ”this is the last episode”. You then proceed to do your adult stuff, miss that the episode has ended and the next one automatically started. Now you’re in the horrible position of either wreaking havoc and stopping the episode mid-episode (toddlers are the best aren’t they), or let your words mean nothing and let them watch another episode anyway.

If you relate to the above, keep reading! I have for a long time found that it would be awesome if the Apple TV could stop/turn off when the episode my kid is looking at ends. A kind of temporary ”auto-play off” button while I’m busy being an adult and can’t manually watch and stop the TV. Googled this and was only able to find other threads of other parents with similar ideas but no execution, let alone instructions for adding this to Home Assistant.

Full disclosure: I’m in no way a programmer, and have only been trying out Home Assistant for just over a week. Therefore -silly enough- proud of myself to have anyhow been able to figure out a way to get this working, and equally impressed with how easy Home Assistant made this for me.

Let’s also be honest that this is absolutely not perfect, but hey, it works for me, and hopefully better than nothing also for you who finds this thread. Here’s hoping someone who knows what they’re doing also finds this thread and comments a more beautiful workflow for this!

Right, enough back-story, let’s get going:

  1. First of all, let’s make the button for you to press to activate this function.

Settings>Devices&Services>Helpers> + Create Helper

Here, select Toggle, give it a proper name such as ”Last Episode” and an icon you like for it.

  1. Now the bigger workload: we make the automation.

Settings>Automations&Scenes>Create Automation

Create new automation.

When section, Add trigger. Select Entity>State, and find your Apple TV in the Entity window. Make sure it’s the one starting with ”media_player.” In the ”From (optional)” window, select ”Playing”. In the ”To (optional)” window, select ”Any state (ignoring attribute changes)”.

And if section, Add trigger. Select Entity>State, and find the toggle you made in step 1. It should start with ”input_boolean.” In the ”State” window, select ”On”.

Then do section, Add action, search for the ”Media Player: Turn Off” action (if you prefer the program is paused rather than AppleTV turning of, select the ”Media Player: Pause” action.). Click the green ”+ Choose Entity” button, and select again the ”media_player.” Apple TV entity.

Recommended optional is to add also in the ”Then do” section a second Action for ”Input Boolean: Turn Off”, and in the green ”+ Choose Entity” button, add your toggle we made in step 1. This turns the function off after having been run once, so you can avoid looks that could kill from your non-tech savvy partner.

  1. Go to your Dashboard, select Edit Dashboard and add the ”input_boolean.” Entity we made in step 1 to your preferred place in your Dashboard. Mine’s just under my Apple TV card.
  2. Try it out!

The drawback of this method is that the Apple TV turns off whatever you do. Pause, exit app, whatever. The TV will turn off. I have so far been unsuccessful selecting any other state than ”Any state” that makes this work as intended. Anyway, for me, I prefer this to nothing and find good use for it already. Also been able to add these as Scenes in my Control Center on my iPhone, so can quickly toggle also outside the Home Assistant app.

Two weeks ago we launched our first mmWave sensor and have already sold 300 units! I'm now focused on enhancing our users' experience even further. Today, I started working on the Plotly Graph Card path visualization, and here's the current result.

Sensy-One S1 Plotly

@iamdabe Suggestion

Does anyone have ideas or tips for improvements? For example, perhaps we could add a gradient to the tail of the path that changes based on the targets' speed. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Also, feel free to check out our GitHub repository where you can find the configuration files.

I know a lot of people around here praise them but my experience with them is just rubbish.

To give some context, most of my sensors are either Tuya TS0203 or Tuya WL-19DWZ and they work great but they are too big to fit in the space between the frame of the window and the wall for some use cases.

No worries I said, I'll get IKEA ones. Yes, they cost more, but I only need two and they are slimmer so they will fit.

Well, they are slimmer and they do fit, but don't work just as well. Both of the ones I have constantly stop reporting their state. Sometimes the LED does turn on, like it's transmitting, but nothing reaches the controller. Other times the LED doesn't even turn on.

To get them working again I have to take out the battery and that isn't as easy as with other sensors since it has a screw to keep it in place.

I have a friend who just threw out 5 of them since he had similar issues, not to mention that at one point one of them kept sending the status every second (the LED was just red) spamming the network and also draining the battery.

I'm writing this in the hopes that when people search this subreddit for them they will not only see the good posts but also know that some of us had pretty shitty experiences with IKEA E2013.

Finally tired of this old conbee 2 and want to migrate to the SLZB-06 PoE stick to use over ethernet. I have over 100 devices in Z2M so realize this will be not fun.

Should i set up another instance of Z2M and migrate devices over that way? Will there be any changes to entities if using a different stick? i am hoping i can do the following:

  • re-pair the device to the new stick / Z2M instances
  • delete the old device in HA
  • rename the device in Z2M to the old name

that i probably will end up with devices in HA with the same name / entities?

Any other tips?

Underated feature,

I have a meross smart blind switch (which has an integrated LED) but my soon-to-be wife didn't like it so much because the LED of the switch were were on all the time, and she didn't like any light at all when going to sleep.

Turns out that using home assistant you can switch off the light of the LED :).

Hey ive got a small lamp in the living room which turns on at night, and turns off in the morning. Now I have an automation which whenever my fridge is open for more than 10 seconds turn that light red. and when its closed it should turn back how it was before so either on when its night or off if its daytime. Whats the best way to achieve this?

I know a lot of people already know, but for those that don't, Claude AI is pretty amazing (using the Pro, extended version) in writing or rewriting YAML Automations. I have gone through most of my 120 automations, and claude added error handling, notifications, and simplifications to existing automations. Before you do a final implementation of the new code, make sure to make a duplicate of your exisitng one, then create a v2 (or whatever) and test it out. It is not perfect (but 99% there) since sometimes there are slight implementation or syntax differences (state() versus states() for example), but it is amazing. It would be REALLY cool if HA can implement an AI version to create automations right in HA.
