What are the home automation devices you commonly use that you can no longer do without. I'll start: Motion sensor in the bathroom that turns on the light Smart button associated with some devices Electric gate controlled by smart switch

A wee project I’ve been working on!

Using home assistant as a custom game launcher with miniature big boxes.

  1. The boxes have an NFC sticker inside them, then they are tapped on the NFC reader (Using this project: https://github.com/adonno/tagreader )

  1. Then an automation is sent to press a button on the PC to launch the game (Using this project to communicate to the PC: https://github.com/hass-agent )

The boxes also have 3d printed SD card holders for installation files and there’s some old floppy disks that can be scanned that perform tasks such as shutting down the computer, or force closing all open windows.

I’ve made a video going through the design to the final product, if you fancy watching it :)

Hi,

I recently started my home automation journey with HA, and I want to set up an alarm. I have deployed sensors on all doors and windows (Shelly Z-wave, if relevant) and bought a siren (Aeotec). The goal, for now, is simple: have some sort of button/mode/whatever I toggle when I leave the house to enable the alarm, and if one of the sensors detects something opens up when the alarm is enabled ~~deploy the hidden lasers and turn the intruders into dust~~ ring the siren.

In the future I will want to expand on this, like auto-detect presence, notify if I enable the alarm while a window open, etc, but for now I just want to get the basics going. I searched the sub a bit, and some people mention the "default" built-in alarm you enable in the configuration file, while other mention alarmo; both of which seem to be years-old threads, so I wanted to refresh this question, and ask what the community is using in 2025.

Thanks

edit: seems like Alarmo is still the way to go. TY all who took a moment to reply to this thread

Just came to share this "awesomeness" with those who don't know, I've had a green for a few years, no issues as it's perfectly suitable for my needs, have 5 tapo cameras but don't use frigate so they work fine and never felt the need for something with more power. Got offered a mini pc Acemagic V1 16gb/1TB So I thought, why not explore proxmox and perhaps keep the green as a backup? The beauty is that, you can assign whatever mac adress you want to the home assistant vm when installing, so just gave it same Mac as the green, as my slzb's are running via wifi (2 separate Z2M networks) it was just perfect, all worked after the backup restore, So if mini pc ever fails or whatever I just need to turn it off, turn on the green, update home assistant os before restauring backup and done, It is important to update befure restoring because some backups will give error on a machine running an older version. Surely there's a whole new world on proxmox but the Mac adress part was really nice.

I posted this thread a couple months ago about my Aqara temperature sensors constantly dropping out - https://old.reddit.com/r/homeassistant/comments/1jvrhww/aqara_temp_sensors_luck_of_the_draw_constantly/

Since then I tried other temp sensors - generic Tuya and recently Sonoff ones. Both would also cut out at seemingly random for no reason. I thought it was weird that I didn't have this problem with any other sensors all from various brands (Philips, Ikea, Sonoff).

I was pretty annoyed cause temp/humidity tracking is something I really wanted, so I decided last week to try out Z2M since I saw reports from people that they had more success with it, and it might even provide insights into why they were dropping.

Knock on wood but it's been a week now and everything is still online, whereas before those sensors were dropping within a day or two. Also it now shows firmware updates and battery percentages, which I didn't get before.

So yeah if you are experiencing issues like this with ZHA, I'd suggest giving Z2M a go, it really isn't that complex to set up

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to end technical support for older Wemo products, effective January 31, 2026. What this means for you:

  • App Access: The Wemo app used to control these devices will no longer be supported after January 31, 2026.
  • Remote Features: Any features that rely on cloud connectivity, including remote access and voice assistant integrations, will no longer work.
  • Customer Support: Technical support, firmware and software updates, and troubleshooting assistance for affected products will no longer be available after January 31, 2026.

You know that look. The one your partner gives you when you excitedly explain how you just spent 6 hours getting a temperature sensor to display correctly on your dashboard. Yeah, that look.

I've been deep in the Home Assistant rabbit hole for 3 years now. Started with a few smart bulbs, now I have 187 entities, 4 ESP32 boards running ESPHome, custom Node-RED flows, and a dashboard that would make Tony Stark jealous. My wife? She just wanted the lights to work when she flipped the switch.

Everything changed last month when our newborn arrived. Sleep deprivation hit HARD. One night at 3 AM, while stumbling to the nursery for the fifth time, I had an epiphany.

I created what I call the "Midnight Parent Mode" automation. Here's what it does:

  • Motion sensor detects movement in our bedroom between 11 PM - 6 AM
  • Dims hallway lights to 5% warm white (just enough to see, not enough to wake you fully)
  • Nursery door sensor triggers soft amber nightlight
  • Temperature automatically adjusts to optimal baby sleep temp (68°F/20°C)
  • White noise machine starts at low volume
  • After 20 minutes of no motion, everything gradually fades back to off

The kicker? I added a physical Zigbee button by the bed. One press activates "feeding mode" - slightly brighter lights, starts the bottle warmer (smart plug), and even logs the feeding time to a spreadsheet for the pediatrician.

My wife's reaction? "Why didn't you build THIS three years ago?!"

Now she's asking me to automate more things. ASKING. She even suggested we get presence sensors for the cars so the garage lights turn on automatically when we pull up.

The real lesson here: We get so caught up in what's technically possible that we forget to solve actual problems. Your family doesn't care about your perfect YAML or your 300ms response time. They care about things that make life easier.

What's your "spouse approval factor" automation? I'm collecting ideas for Version 2.0 of Parent Mode!

I want to be able to detect a smelly ass bathroom and turn on the exhaust fan. Has anyone done this?

This is, by far, the greatest use of home automation I can think of. I have an incredibly powerful sense of smell, I'm like a bloodhound. It is the world's worst superpower. The smell of my kids' shits makes me gag.

I do not want an occupancy sensor or anything like that. It has to detect the gas.
