So I just wanted to share a quick anecdote and maybe save some headache for somebody else.

I recently set up an automation to check internet connectivity through cloudflare DNS, and if it's down for a certain amount of time, powercycle my modem and check again.

My Internet kept going down on a consistent basis just about an hour ago, chalked it up to my ISP just being Cox. Finally investigated and figured out the problem.

You can probably guess where I'm going with this... Cloudflare DNS was down, my Internet was perfectly fine.

So now my automation checks 2 completely separate DNS before power cycling, and yours should too!

Just a heads up, had an email earlier today about changes to accessing the AccuWeather API, needed for the AccuWeather integration.

Looks like moving forward there will no longer be free access to their API: https://developer.accuweather.com/new-portal

One of my early builds was a sensor package for the front porch. It includes temperature, humidity, motion, and light with more to be added over time.

The motion sensor was put in place for the control of a large WLED strip if someone is leaving or coming home after dark. Basically it switches from a light show to a bright white light for locking or unlocking the door and feeling safe coming in or out to the front yard.

An added benefit was since I already had a motion sensor during the daytime I could flash a light inside to let us know someone (or something, caught a bunch of cats as well) is on the porch. The dog has taken this as her cue to look it the window and bark. For some reason the delivery personnel seem to really hotfoot it to their vehicles or have started dropping packages on a column near the porch instead of at the front door like they used to.

And yes it's the light because I can flash it in a similar fashion and the dog will alert. I have created a monster...

I'm trying to keep my automations clean and was wondering what guidance/best practices the community had for automations where you want to turn lights on for a certain condition, and once that condition has ended, the lights turn off.

E.g., I want to turn on an indicator light when I am in meetings. So my triggers will be if the camera or mic are active > turn on a light. Once the meeting is over, I want the light to turn off. So do you implement a 2nd automation for "if mic inactive > turn off"? Or do you structure a single automation in a way that will react to both situations?

The easiest is 2 rules. But is that the right way? Does it even really matter and is this post just pointless? Lol.

Am I the only one who feels like running Home Assistant is a part-time job? :)

I’ve been using Home Assistant for over a year now. I’m not a programmer or engineer by trade, but I learn fast and can usually figure things out with enough Googling, GPTing and trial & error.

But still… my house doesn’t feel like it “just works.” It feels like I’m constantly tweaking things, fixing broken automations, adjusting logic when seasons or routines change, or debugging things that almost - but not quite - work as expected. I swear, very few automations work 100% right on the first try. Every little thing seems to need testing and refinement afterward.

I genuinely enjoy HA and what it can do, but sometimes I look around and think: “Isn’t the whole point that it runs on its own?”

So, to the more advanced users - those of you whose homes are on true autopilot - how did you get there? What are your personal rules or design principles for automations? What do you not do anymore because it just causes more maintenance?

Would love to hear your tips or even general philosophy. Especially interested in “logic best practices” or how you structure your automations to avoid chaos long-term.

Thanks in advance to everyone who replies!

I've been a homekit guy for 5+ years. I figured it's apple, it's secure, and it's good enough. It has been. i felt like there's nothing i "needed" and that everything was working as intended. It was a great little system.

On a whim i decided to give HA a go and i'm floored by how amazing it's been (i'm 3 days in) and by how useful chatgpt has been in guiding me through it all.

I even have my meater probe automated now. I can speak text on my homepod mini, i can have it send notifications, i can blink lights when my chicken is done smoking, i can even control the smoker with a smart plug and shut it off automatically when the meater temperature rises to the desired temp. And all this is just the damn meater probe.

Again, i'm floored at the limitless possibilities and can't wait to dig into the next thing.

Since Nest Protect smoke and CO alarm seems to have been discontinued, I'm wondering what's the alternative to it. I've read stuff about First Alarm, X-sense and Kidde, but reviews are very mixed. Perhaps there's a more reliable model between these brands or am I missing something?

I though I'd ask the experts here.
