LONDON, Jan 29 (Reuters) - Firms that check environmental, social and governance claims made by companies will be asked to follow a proposed new ethics code to help combat greenwashing, the chief of a global standards body told Reuters.

Trillions of dollars have flowed into investment funds touting green credentials, but these can be misleading, a practice known as greenwashing. As a result, companies are increasingly being asked to disclose more about their actions on climate change and other issues such as board diversity.

Companies in the European Union and globally from this year will have to use new, mandatory disclosures on ESG and climate-related factors in their annual reports for 2024 and onwards.

These disclosures will need checking by external auditors as a safeguard against greenwashing.

Gabriela Figueiredo Dias, chair of the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), said it was proposing revisions and additions to its ethics standards for auditing sustainability information from companies.

When we mine the land for precious minerals, what do we gain, and what do we lose?

These giant balls of metal each represent an exact amount of material: the volumes produced by various mines in South Africa.

Artist and photographer Dillon Marsh wanted to visualise the value that humans have taken from the Earth, and its impact.

He added digital balls of material to these photos of scarred landscapes to illustrate what was gained, and what was lost.

The series is called: ‘For what it’s worth’.

Why does this Öko-Institut care about reducing emissions in farming?

https://mastodon.social/@oekoinstitut/111782856110691806

According to https://www.mdr.de/wissen/deutschland-top-fuenf-klima-emissionen-100.html emissions of farming is negligible. Even if they change anything, probably with great effort, they wouldn't change anything. They are the least who need to care.

My colleagues and I are investigating this in connection with manifestations of eco-anxiety (or climate anxiety) in adults aged 18 to 35.

A $50 (CAD) prepaid credit card will be drawn amongst participants. 💳

We are completely independent in conducting this study and are doing so on a volunteer basis. None of the researchers are receiving funds nor a salary from any video-game or other company.

This study is approved by the Research Ethics Board of the Faculty of Literature and Social Sciences of the University of Sherbrooke. 🎓

Thank you for your help! 🙂

The most common microplastics in the environment are microfibers—plastic fragments shaped like tiny threads or filaments. Microfibers come from many sources, including cigarette butts, fishing nets and ropes, but the biggest source is synthetic fabrics, which constantly shed them.

Textiles shed microfibers while they are manufactured, worn and disposed of, but especially when they are washed. A single wash load can release several million microfibers. Many factors affect how many fibers are released, including fabric type, mechanical action, detergents, temperature and the duration of the wash cycle.

Two days ago, there was a post over at /c/WorldNews that linked an article from the Guardian about Norway granting permission to private mining company Nordic Mining to dispose of their waste into the Førde fjord. I left a comment asking how can I, an American with no power what so ever, do to stop this. As of writing this, I still haven't gotten a response. I might contact the head of Naturvernforbundet. If there's a better approach please suggest it. Thanks in advance.

I just donated to support Wangan and Jagalingou Cultural Custodians to continue the Waddananggu cultural ceremony on their lands near Adani's mine.

Waddananggu started because the protection of the land, air, animals and sacred springs are more important than Adani's destruction of the environment and cultural heritage for coal mining.

Harsh conditions, flooding rains, and fine dust mean they continuously need repairs for camping gear, vehicles, solar panels, and the communications tower. On top of that, they have ongoing costs for food, medical supplies, fuel, and transporting family to and from Waddananggu.

Our donations are needed and helps with the continuation of this important stand on Country. Will you join me?
