I saw a post here (https://lemmy.ml/post/1179679) about some Chinese kid spending USD 64k on video games and I read the news article and found myself down a rabbit hole.

https://www.techspot.com/news/98980-13-year-old-spent-64000-parents-money-mobile.html

China has long held a dim view of video games, calling them "electronic drugs" a few years ago. It only allows those under 18 to play online games for one hour, between 8 pm and 9 pm local time, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

So basicaly, this article says that China (or more accurately the Chinese government) has a dim view of video games.

So I kept digging and found this article:

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/08/30/business/media/china-online-games.html

“I think this is the right policy,” she said. “It amounts to the state taking care of our kids for us.”

This phrase just screams "BAD PARENT" to me.

Why do you have to offload the responsibility of caring for your children to the government? You chose to bring them into the world, now you're responsible for them.

Which brings me to my question... why does China's government hate video games so much? Why would they want to impose such draconian restrictions on childrens' free time?

I've just made a community for posting links and keeping track of game updates. Feel free to join and to post about upcoming or recently released updates to your favourite games! https://lemmy.ml/c/gameupdates

August 24th for people who don't want to watch the trailer.

A lot of game specific subreddits post update announcements, which were how I heard about stuff like that before I switched to Lemmy. On here, there's not enough people yet for communities like that, so I'm looking to see how many people would be interested in a community that collects and shares news about game updates

I've had this on my wishlist for a while. Feels like a spiritual successor to Nuclear Throne, can't wait to actually try it out.

I'm a big fan of the indie game Hypnospace Outlaw. (Lemmy kind of gives me Hypnospace vibes which is part of the reason why I'm really enjoying it haha.) The upcoming sequel Dreamsettler is probably my most anticipated upcoming game.

The developer just released a spinoff game on Steam called Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath, which is a retro Doom-like game created by one of the fictional characters in Hypnospace Outlaw. Has anyone here been playing it? I started playing it last night and it's pretty neat, although I'm not sure how much it plays into the lore of Hypnospace. I've only completed three levels so far, but so far I'm a little disappointed that there isn't more story. I was hoping there would be some kind of twist beyond what was shown in the trailer. But maybe that will come later in the game?

Anyways has anyone here been playing Slayers X? What do you think of it?

Quest Master is a new game by Skydevilpalm and Julian Creutz looks like a Zelda Maker where you can design your own dungeons and then share them. Hopefully their sharing ability is a little more robust than what Nintendo did with Mario Maker. No release date yet, but apparently a demo is coming soon.

I made this community to provide a place for Playstation players to hang out, socialize, post links, and otherwise do what people do on a link aggregator website.

When I came to Lemmy I noticed that there was no Playstation community, and that c/Playstation was seemingly defunct. While this community is called PS5, I'm not going to limit discussion to a narrow focus for now. So anything PSX, PS2, PS3, PS4, PSP, PS Vita, Remote Play (Official or Chiaki), or even Emulation is all game. As Lemmy communities mature, I may decide to narrow the focus, but for now consider anything Playstation related good to go!

Anyway, lets all build a great and kind community! Head over to the sidebar for more info. I will likely add more links and resources as time goes on.

I had the chance to pick up a copy of 8 Bit Music Power Final recently, a NES game released in 2021! Before this, I hadn't even realized games were still being developed for the NES, let alone receiving commercial releases.

I'm sure Nintendo has nothing to do with this continued support though, so it got me wondering about the CIC lockout chip. Supposedly, it should be in every officially licensed cartridge for the NES, and without it the console will refuse to start and repeatedly reset. Without Nintendo licensing games anymore though, how are these new releases managing to get around this?

I know there were unlicensed cartridges that used a brute-force method to bypass the chip back then, but these new games don't seem to be doing the same thing as those. Was the lockout chip reverse engineered at some point and that's how it's done now? I can't find too much information on this, but I'd really like to know how it works.

I recently did the "Professor Oak Challenge" for this one and had lots of fun.

Many people have, like me, realized that they use their deck more than their main rig.

For the last few years I've gone from 1080p to 1440p to 4k to 800p and don't think my main box will need to get beefier until the next big VR advancement. My machine is already three years old. I may rock it for another three at this pace.

How many of you will be laying off of CPU/GPU upgrades since handheld are so compelling?
